ALICE IN CHAINS Collaborates With ELTON JOHN On New Album - Aug. 11, 2009
Among the many highlights on "Black Gives Way To Blue", the highly anticipated new album from ALICE IN CHAINS, is a special guest performance by Elton John. The two rock legends collaborated on the album's stunning title track, "Black Gives Way To Blue", a heart-stirring tribute to ALICE IN CHAINS' late lead singer Layne Staley. The album arrives in stores September 29.

"We were thinking about adding piano to the track and a friend suggested we call Elton," recalls guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell. "I remember laughing and saying, 'Yeah, I'll get right on that.' But I decided it was worth trying and wrote Elton an email explaining what that song means to us — that it's a real, raw openhearted song for Layne. We sent him the track and got a call shortly after saying he thought it was beautiful and that he wanted to play on it. We were blown away. Elton John is a huge influence on me as a songwriter and having him on that song is an amazing honor for us."

"I've long been an admirer of Jerry Cantrell and when he asked me to play on 'Black Gives Way To Blue', I was very flattered and couldn't resist," says John. "It was a great recording session with ALICE IN CHAINS for a beautiful song."

About the collaboration, Cantrell says, "Elton was finishing his Red Piano run in Vegas, so we flew there and hung out for a few hours. Walking into a studio and seeing the sheet music for that song on Elton's piano made it meaningful on so many different levels. The whole experience was pretty magical."

"Black Gives Way To Blue" is ALICE IN CHAINS' first new studio release in more than 10 years. The quartet (guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell, drummer Sean Kinney, bassist Mike Inez and guitarist/vocalist William DuVall) recorded the album with producer Nick Raskulinecz (RUSH, FOO FIGHTERS) at Studio 606 in Northridge, CA and Henson Studios in Hollywood.

The track listing for the CD is as follows:

01. All Secrets Known
02. Check My Brain
03. Last Of My Kind
04. Your Decision
05. A Looking In View
06. When The Sun Rose Again
07. Acid Bubble
08. Lessons Learned
09. Take Her Out
10. Private Hell
11. Black Gives Way To Blue

ALICE IN CHAINS has tapped U2 and WHITE STRIPES video director Alex Courtes to shoot a clip for "Check My Brain", the first single from "Black Gives Way To Blue".

Fans and members of the press heard "Black Gives Way To Blue" in its entirety at a private listening party in Los Angeles on July 14, followed by a three-song acoustic set by the band in which it debuted two songs from the album live — the title track and "Your Decision".

On August 22, band will join TOOL and LINKIN PARK for the first-ever Epicenter show at the Fairplex in Pomona, CA, to be followed by a headlining tour set to kick off September 4 at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C.

Didn't expect this at all, I'm sure his piano playing fits beautifully with the song. I'm not a fan of Elton John and I would have never thought he would play on an Alice in Chains Cd but it really goes to show how far their music has stretched. I truly believe this album is going to be nothing short of amazing, all the the things these guys went through together. Watching their best friend and band mate slowly fall into madness and never return. This entire album is for Layne, it is like an expression of the madness and torment he dealt with and the final song is saying goodbye. Of course I have yet to hear it in its entirety but when you read what Jerry says and how much it all means to him you know he is finally dealing with everything through the music. Last night I listened to A Looking In View several times in a row and read the lyrics. For the first time I understood it and it really got to me being a person that has dealt with darkness and mental issues. "Desperate plans make sense and alone I, hide"

Guess you've never had a friend descend into a heroin junkie. This is what happens - they isolate, lash out, and break ties. The level of despair and degradation, physical, mental and emotional, they subject themselves to is heartbreaking. Layne sounds just like a friend I lost to heroin.

Good for Jerry and Co. for keeping him alive through music. Even though the band lost a major component of their sound, I'm stoked for this record.

DrChocolate knows what hes talking about.

Layne's mom was asked to give her blessing before AiC went forward...and she did. Someone who wasn't his friend would never have asked for his moms OK.

I really hope this is the only "Layne tribute" song on the album.
He was a great singer and original AIC is one of my favorite bands but I had more than enough of Jerry working through his pain on his two solo albums.
Let him R.I.P.
I've been hoping for a new kick-ass AiC album but if this is just a bunch of morose crap, I'm passing on the new incarnation.

And I'm sorry, but Elton John has no business on a hard rock/metal album. Maybe they can get Cher for a duet on the next one. Ugh.

Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy is an autobiographical song about Elton ( Captain Fantastic ) and Bernie Taupin ( the Brown Dirt Cowboy ).

It's also a great album. Jerry Cantrell picked Curtains as one of his desert island songs in Guitar Player magazine a few years back.

If you haven't heard it, grab a copy you won't be disapointed.

I guess I just don't see the big deal about some dude that hasn't been relevant in music in decades aside from some song about a dead adultress but that's apperantly just me and the dickbag using Willie Nelson's name.
Y'know what would have been cool is if Black Sabbath would have gotten Liberace to play the piano on "Changes" back in the day. Going by the comments in this thread, THAT woulda been so much cooler than having Tony Iommi playing it.
