DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT: 'Addicted' Details Revealed
- Aug. 17, 2009
|
|
Canadian musician/producer Devin Townsend ( STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, STEVE VAI, LAMB OF GOD, DARKEST HOUR, GWAR) is preparing to release "Addicted", the second in a series of albums to be made available under the DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT moniker. Commented Townsend: "With 'Ki' [the first DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT album], I kind of strode out in uncharted territories for myself musically, and loved the experience. But during the course of writing this four-record project, it was inevitable that I would end up writing a selection of tunes that were very much in line with my back catalogue. This group of songs is the second record in the series, and it is called 'Addicted'. "Musically, 'Addicted' is along the lines of the big, wall-of-sound hard rock/heavy metal of OCEAN MACHINE and [ THE DEVIN TOWNSEND BAND's] 'Accelerated Evolution' — even PHYSICIST at points. It is a very direct and 'to-the-point' album with an emphasis on groove and the chorus. "In the past, lots of my records end up taking a kind of PINK FLOYD-ish route (between song meandering etc.). 'Addicted' is really simple: 11 rocking songs and no bullshit. I wanted to make a record that was heavy, without being dark or depressing. "When I got into metal, it was for the energy behind it, but somewhere along the way, that energy started getting really negative. "In music right now, there's a ton of heavy bands that are really depressing to listen to loudly. I wanted to make a record without any real deep metaphor on the surface. Something that sounds good, has a good beat, and a positive feeling. It is still heavy as all-get-out, but I think there's a differentiation to be made between being 'peaceful', and being peaceful but wanting to celebrate loud, crushing music. "The vocal duties on this record are handled by myself and Anneke van Giersbergen [ex- THE GATHERING]. (I wanted to have male and female vocals kind of 'tell the story' so to speak) It's an honour to work with her and she has a lovely, lovely energy. The other musicians on this record are Ryan Van Poederooyen on drums, Brian Waddell on bass, and Mark Cimino on guitars. "I love this record; it affects me in a way that I wasn't prepared for. It's a fully rocking album of optimism. "If you just want to 'play it loud' without any crazy metaphor, this album might be for you! "On other notes: I have been rehearsing with a new band, and we will start touring in early 2010, representing all the back catalogue of solo material, from 'Ki', 'Addicted', PHYSICIST, ZILTOID, TERRIA, OCEAN MACHINE, THE DEVIN TOWNSEND BAND, INFINITY etc... I have some big plans for this and rehearsals are sounding amazing. The touring entity will be called ' DEVIN TOWNSEND' and is essentially a way for me to get out there and interact again and showcase 15 years of music that never really got its fair shake. We look forward to seeing you out there! "I will start the work on the fourth record, 'Deconstruction', in Los Angeles in October. Some great plans for that... (and by the way, THAT is a heavy record with a lot of metaphor...). News on that as it comes! "So I hope you will enjoy 'Addicted', in the theme of the DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT. The reason 'Addicted' exists is maybe a little deeper than what the record sounds like upfront. But upfront, it kind of states: 'Life is tough, the world can be an ugly place...so let's forget about the dramas and ROCK — here's some heavy guitars, big choruses and killer beats." "Addicted" track listing: 01. Addicted02. Universe In A Ball03. Bend It Like Bender!04. Beautiful Crush05. Hyperdrive06. Wild Hearts07. Ih-Ah!08. The Way Home09. Numbered10. Souls Awake! 11. Om"Ki", the first in a series of albums from Devin Townsend to be made available under the DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT moniker, was released in Europe on May 25 in North America on June 19 via InsideOut Music.

Ki is one of the few albums I've really liked this year thus far, and the samples I've heard off Addicted do not disappoint at all. Bring it on, already!

By the way, I'm sure this is the first and the last time we'll see few crayons put to good use on Blabbermouth.

He says in that post: "I will start the work on the fourth record, 'Deconstruction', in Los Angeles in October." Either it's a typo, or I've gone insane. What's the third record then?

Otherwise i will have to find a way to get my arse overseas! I still remember going to my first metal gig, slayer in 98' and after the show getting a flyer for SYL with special guests Ocean Machine. At that point i'd only really seen the Detox film clip, and the Life film clip. Didn't go to that gig, and years after getting into his whole back catalogue, really regret not going, but if he's going to tour again!!! shit yeah!!!

Okay I LOVE the Lad and feel Mr. Townsend is a wonderful musician and producer. NOW I need help from fellow posters on here. Please help this newbie out with what to purchase from his solo/side projects. Here and there I heard some DTB, as well as a little of 'Ki' which was extremely mellow, and now heard some of 'Addicted' which I dig. Give me some kind of order or something to follow so I can start my path with his other music because I am not one who will close the door on Hevy Devy just because the Lad called it a day. It is much appreciated!

Ocean Maching, Terria, and Synchestra are good starting points in my opinion. I've read in other Dev interviews that he may be sitting on this record for a few months even though it is finished. From what I've heard, he seems to be changing his mind somewhat as to the sequence or carrying out of his original plan.

I am glad I am not the only person who thought they brain farted. I think it is a typo, it should be the third CD. He doesn't have a name for the 4th CD yet.
As for what CDs to start with, Terria would be a good intro. If you like SYL allot then Physicist is also a good start. All of his CDs are good so there is really no bad place to start. The only exception would be his ambient stuff (Hummer, Devlab) which is totally different. His ambient music is more of something to put on for background noise or sleep time.

I believe he already recorded his 3rd record? I'm not sure, but I think that's a possibility. This is a 4-part project. He already had all this concept stuff figured out, before he even recorded Ki.

I'm fired up to hear this.
That's definitey no coincidence having a song called "Wild Hearts" and an album called 'Addicted'. I'm pretty sure it's directly about Ginger and his, uh, dependencies.
For solo stuff I'd also concur starting with Ocean Machine, Terria and I'd throw Ziltoid in there too (for the songs, not the gimmick).

You think Physicist is his best? God no! But his own admission, he's not even real happy with that album. I think it's hands down his WEAKEST effort. Ocean Machine or Infinity get my vote for best. Hopefully soon to be outdone by Deconstruction...

But it's cool to see, something i don't like as much, and Dev and you don't like as much, is still appreciated by somebody. I think I pretty much liked the song "death" and that was it on that album.
I would say for his best stuff, Ocean Machine and Terria, but i love all the other stuff too, and I'd probably say, "triumph" off of Synchestra is my fave Dev song!

I´ve been listening to KI a lot and it´s an awsome record. Altough the music is mellower and the few heavier parts leave you craving for more of it the overall record is fantastic. Great melodies and hooks all over the damn thing. Really looking forward to Addicted, which by the short clips above already sounds pretty good. Hope to see the man on tour next year!

for someone who LOVES SYL but doesnt know Dev's solo stuff, but is looking for the most "SYL sounding" solo material, Id go with....
1. Ziltoid 2. Physicist 3. Accelerated Evolution 4. Ocean Machine 5. toss up between Infinity or Terria
My personal is Accelerated Evolution. But if youre look for the ones that sound the most like SYL, Id go that route. I should mention that Ziltoid is quite jokey (its supposed to be though) and Physicist has been ranked the worst solo material even by Devin himself...
I should also mention that while EVERY solo record has "SYL-ish moments", NONE of them are absolute SYL records. All IMO of course

Yeah i just noticed that. I'm Assuming it's the original "Om" song re-recorded. One demo that I wish he re-recorded as a proper studio version is the song "Ocean Machines" off of Ass-Sordid demos, although it's still an awesome song in demo-form!

But all Devin is good Devin.
Looking foward to his next albums and - a tour! I'm not sure that a re-recording of Om and Hyperdrive is "necessary". To my ears, Om is on par with any other song on Infinity, production-wise and all. "Demo" - hahaha...
A re-recording of the song Ocean Machines with the production values of Terria would be awesome indeed.
It's a damn shame that I don't have the time to post on his message board and to read his regular updates at the moment.
