KISS: Entire 'Modern Day Delilah' Song Available For Streaming
- Aug. 19, 2009
|
|
"Modern Day Delilah", a brand new song from KISS, is available for streaming in its entirety below (courtesy of KissOnline.com). The track comes off KISS' first new studio album in over a decade, called "Sonic Boom", which will be released on October 6 exclusively at Wal-Mart properties. The collection, which costs only $12, will also feature the band's re-recordings of their greatest hits which was previously available as a Japanese import, and a 2009 concert featuring current members Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer filmed in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The cover for "Sonic Boom" is by veteran artist Michael Doret, who created the cover for the band's 1976 album "Rock And Roll Over". "We tried to do a KISS album, and it was an ill-fated attempt because there was no real band," guitarist/vocalist Paul Stanley tells RollingStone.com. "For a band to make a great album, it has to share a common purpose, and we didn't have it." He continued, "Things happen when they're ready. We couldn't have made this album without Eric and Tommy. I've known Eric now for 20 years. He's been in and out of the band, and the best times are when he's in." Bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons has raised expectation on the album — which was produced by Paul Stanley — by saying in online postings, calling "Sonic Boom" "the best new record we've done since 'Destroyer'. It is 'Rock And Roll Over' meets 'Love Gun'... If you're a fan of our stuff from about 1977, you'll feel right at home." "The great thing about these tunes is that we can reproduce them live. Just four guys," Simmons tells RollingStone.com. "We don't have to prove anything to anybody. All the nay-sayers who didn't understand it, we walk on their graves in our 8-inch platform heels. If you want to say rebirth or born again, you're goddamn right. There's a sense of pride here. When you get up onstage with these guys, you look over and you go, 'Wow, I'm in KISS.'"

I, at first, was hearing Pearl Jam's 'Even Flow' in the beginning riff. But, that was from listening to the one minute static-y sound clip. Now that I hear the entire song in good quality, I'm hearing more of KISS' 'Watchin' You' sound... not that they're copying themselves, but it really does go back to the mid 70's KISS sound musically. The solo sealed it for me. Paul sounds incredible on this! GREAT STUFF!

Well, I don't have much else to add to the overwhelmingly positive reviews here! I'm on my tenth listen or so and the song simply cranks. It's got 70s KISS vibes, a little 80s KISS, definitely some 90s (mostly Revenge), yet fresh and not quite like anything they've ever done before. I've seen this song compared to ten or fifteen other songs throughout their career, but no one has said that it's a straight rewrite of any of them, because it isn't. It has that KISS greatness, but it's brand new and I'm lovin' it!

KISS IS BACK ! granted the album cover took awhile to grow on me...But MDD really does bring all back to "Thee KISS sound" Some people gotta realize this isn't brain surgery...it's only Rock n Roll and KISS does just that...man it makes me realize why I hate half the shit that I hear on "modern active rock" radio today. I've heard the re-recorded stuff with Eric and Tommy too...granted I'm not a big fan of re-recordings...but they really sound great...and to think that I'm getting a whole NEW batch of tunes AND a DVD as well for 12 bucks in October makes it that much sweeter...I've just listened to MDD like 10 times already....can't wait for the rest! KISS 2009 baybee!

This song would've fit perfectly on REVENGE. Definitely a song that doesn't blow me away like "Unholy" did when that was first released before Revenge came out but it shows great promise for Sonic Boom overall. Ace may've one upped them this time around with the "Outer Space" single as far as a 1st single to kick off an album release.

It's "Death Magnetic" and "Black Ice" all over again. This song is awfully mediocre. But since it is not all bad and somewhat reminiscent of their old stuff, all the fangirls have come out to declare "Sonic Boom" to become the record of the year...
The thing is, all those millions of copies that "Death Magnetic" and "Black Ice" have sold, are already collecting dust on their owners' shelves. If all songs on "Sonic Boom" are of the same mediocre quality as "Modern Day Delilah", than nobody will remember this record one year from now either.
People will still be playing timeless Kiss classics like "Detroit Rock City" and "Deuce" in fifty years time, but who will care about a composition like "Modern Day Delilah" once the hype wears of? Although I still have hope that it turns out to be one of the weaker tracks on the album and Kiss will prove me wrong. But so far, there is absolutely nothing to get excited about.

your thoughts are well spoken and may be somewhat true, however....my friend....FUCK IT! LETS ROLL WITH IT NOW!! hA HAAAAAA! I gotta say I still put on "Black Ice" alot and love the fact that I can listen to NEW music by one of my favorite bands. The early stages for a band release are always high...especially when the band has some mileage and the first song gets alot of positive feedback...but man...you notice NO ONE gets all "bloggy" when new music from the latest "active rock radio" band releases an album. It's always the old timers. Just goes to show ya...love em or hate em...people are STILL talking /blogging about KISS.

I'm hearing all sorts of classic kiss on this song, I do hear a little 70's in there, I just don't think that they could ever duplicate that sound cuz recording techniques and equipment has changed since then, but it certainly does have the kiss sound. A little bit of all the Era's. I am really impressed by the song and can't wait for October along with the new tour. Ps... maybe in saying that it was 70's style kiss they meant, they recorded as a group and maybe the feeling of those first couple of records was evident in this recording process and they all got caught up in the middle and said "man this kinda feels like it did when we first started and everyone was hungry" but really who cares, it's a great song and hopefully it stands the test of time.

I'm listening to this with an open mind, but I just can't get into this. The riff is generic and repetative, Tommy's "solo" is nothing special. Big deal a couple of double bends...and he's "copping" Ace's style BIG TIME.

Do you know how many bands out there have made lineup changes? Even to the extent of not even including 1 original member?
This lineup kicks ass. So did the Kulick lineup. We could have easily done without Marc St. John or Vinnie Vincent, but even they had their good moments.
Don't anyone of you dare say anyting about Eric Carr.

Notice how all the haters and cowards out there disappeared the minute they heard this?! I have been a KISS fan since 1976 and this takes me back to their best stuff ever! WOW and WOW!! Did I say WOW!!!? As to all of you that say that KISS is all about the money..so what? Why aren't you about money? Maybe that is why you are still living in your mommy's basement. Grow up. All musicians are in it for the money. Those that aren't, they can send me their royalty checks! KISS sets the standard again!!! "You wanted the best, you got the best"!! Nothing could be truer!!

I actually like Eric Singer. I think he's miles better than Peter, but I don't think he should be wearing the Catman make up.
You're right about Tommy Thayer. I don'tlike him. I didn't like him in Black N Blue, I don't like him in Kiss. I never had a problem with Bruce Kullick in Kiss. I didn't care for the 80's stuff as much, but I still gave it a chance.
I just don't think this song is that great, period. As for Ace's new tune. I do like it, but it's exactly what I expected from Ace, no surprises. I doubt very much Outer Space will make a lasting impression on me other than it being a decent tune.
I've been a fan of these guys since the 70's. I've given every era of Kiss a chance. Some I liked very much, some...mainly Animalize - H.I.T.S. I could care less about. But I've always given any new Kiss album a chance.
I didn't care for Pyscho Circus when it came out and that has Ace on it....I know he's only on 3 tunes, but still, aside from Within, Into the Void, and Journey of 1000 years I think the album is terrible.

i would assume this one was released because they think its the best one. thats too bad if this is the best one....and remember, eric and tommy both have one on here too which you know are gonna suck. i wished they would have took the makeup and did a revenge style tour instead of parading around with the same old tired stage, same set list. and the makeup thing without the original members is pretty cheesey

...and there are many elements I love in MDD, but what strikes me the most is something that's been missing in KISS' recorded output for a long time: It's 100 percent REAL. An honest piece of american hard rock. You can hear each member cut through in the no frills production. It's raw, it has ENERGY, and it's just four guys ... plugged in and rocking the f*** out. I've admited to not caring so much for Paul's falsetto in parts, but I admire that it wasn't doctored up or hidden. It's just pure rock and roll.
It's great to see the positive reaction ... on Bmouth no less.

Long time kiss fan and when I hear this it reminds me of when I would hear of a record coming out and couldn't wait to get to Music + and buy it.No filler just killer. Basement dwellers beware your Mommy's wont let you buy this album anyway. Plus you would have to wait 2 weeks to get it on your 6 dollar a week allowance. Its time to rock with the new Kiss record and, "Ace is back and I told ya so" !!!!!!!!!

Maybe it's because it's the end of a very long day. Maybe it's because I've had a few beverages. I know this will shock many poster on here, but as I listen tonight, this track is surprisingly better than I anticipated!
The guitar work is pretty solid, and Paul's vocals are great - I don't hear any weakness in his voice (as some of posted). My only criticism would be the title, but that's a minor thing (what is a "Deuce", anyways?!?).
If the rest of the album is this promising, KISS may actually achieve what they set out to achieve, and what they haven't done since "Revenge" - make a decent album!

but the way $tanley and $immon$ were toting this as a "return to the classic kiss sound", i don't hear that. i hear more of a return to 80's kiss sound - this song sounds like it could have been on any number of kiss albums from 84-89. having said that, it isn't terrible, it just isn't stand-out.
it will probably never happen again, but i acutally agree with "yermamasucks" statement: that tommy and eric are the highpoints of this track. the lead guitar and drums sound really solid. my opinion is that $tanley's voice has gotten progressively worse over the years. overall, i would rate this a 6.5/10 - but that a higher grade than i would give anything kiss has done since revenge, so it's a compliment.

Wow. You people are sheep. Do you REALLY think this sounds like 70's era KISS, or could it be because every single piece of buzz that they released about this was all about them "sounding like 70's era" KISS? Don't get me wrong, and I am not bashing KISS (well, maybe just a tad). I am also a huge KISS fan. But c'mon. If every single piece of hype hadn't said this was a return to the 70's sound, would you all have still posted on almost every single post that "they're right! This is their 70's sound!" Because the overworked KISS hype machine planted that seed in your heads months ago and every single prees release that has come out almost every week now has stated that this is a return to the 70's for the band. Really? It sound like a current version of KISS, but with a focus more on songwriting than a comeback (ala "Pyscho Circus"). Maybe it has a sound akin to "Creatures" and "Revenge". Maybe. Their press releases planted the seed and you are all lapping it up like it's a new religion. And I wonder how KISS can sell so many Mr. Potato Heads?

Hey genius. I re-read.......your.....post.........much......slower. You've got 1 rant on this page and it says nothing about whether you meant fairs or casinos in or out of the USA. What, just because you said state fairs? That automatically implies the US? You didn't even specify a year or tour.
Again, genius.
Most people would assume you're talking about something recent. They've been playing fairs and casinos in Canada. Setting attendance records. Who really cares about 5 yrs ago.

"People don't buy anything that sucks."
Ummm, pardon? With all due respect to you, I think that statement is pretty ignorant. Have you heard of Milli Vanilli? They sold nearly 20 million albums. Have you heard of New Kids on the Block? They sold nearly 100 million albums. Need I go on? People do, in fact, buy crap! You need to consider the words of PT Barnum, the circus giant: "There's a sucker born every minute."
I'm not even debating the merits of KISS music - I'm a fan. I'm debating your statement that because someone sells 80 million albums, that makes their music not suck. It doesn't.

People do buy "crap" based on the merits of who's selling it. KISS made some great albums in the 70's - they tried to pass off "The Elder" as an extension of that. Fans bought it at first based on what they expected it to be. Once word go out, fans weren't buying because they knew the truth - it was crap.
That's why I take offense to KISS selling their new album and including a disc of old tracks and a DVD of old tracks. To me, that says loud and clear that KISS knows the new album can't sell on it's own merits, so they prop it up by including a part of their history that DID sell. If they wanted to give away a "freebie", as KISS has always done, great! Throw in a CD of something new like some studio out-takes, or a making-of DVD. Otherwise, it just looks KISS are talking about the future but leaning on their past.

I, being an old timer, decided to give it a go, despite my revulsion for the whole makeup issue. (Even if the CD is great, I won't buy it because they put Eric, a great drummer, and Tommy, a mediocre guitarist, in Peter and Ace's characters. I don't care if they own the rights.) I have let the song cycle for about two hours, but it still doesn't strike me as great, and as the reviews note, Tommy is still sounding like Ace.

If I may, I'm going to respectfully disagree with you that the reason the re-recorded hits is included is because the band think 'Sonic Boom' won't sell on it's own merits. Old-school fans will buy this for the new tunes alone, not for the re-recorded hits. I think it's more to draw newer fans in. The re-recorded hits give a new listener a taste of the bands history, even though they are new recordings with the current line up. All around, this package as a whole is a sweet deal including the bonus DVD.
Adding things to sweeten the deal isn't new anyway. KISS could have chosen to release a Best Buy exclusive, a Target exclusive, an iTunes exclusive as well as a standard version! Or just as bad, chosen to release this with four different 'collector' covers (AC/DC anyone?! I think what they did choose was the best for them, as well as us fans. Either way, $12 is rather inexpensive for a single disc, let alone a 3-disc set.
By the way, i have a lot of respect for you for being honest with your comments... you're not afraid to say what bugs you about KISS and 'Sonic Boom', yet you are cool enough to admit that, once you heard the new tune, this new disc may actually be damn good too! Most people with strong opinions wouldn't ever state outloud that they may have been mistaken. Kudos to you!

...KISS thinking the new album can't sell on its own merits!!
It's STANDARD in the Wal-Mart, Best Buy exclusives to package something extra with the cd.
Did you enjoy that bonus DVD that came with the Heaven and Hell cd? I sure did, but it wasn't the reason I bought the cd. I wanted the new music.
Did people enjoy the re-recorded tracks that came free with the new Journey cd? I'm sure they did, but they bought it for the new music. Otherwise they would have just shelled out for the band's Greatest Hits cd.
AC/DC chose to do the multiple cover thing, whoopee. It's simply part of these exclusive deals with the big retailers.
No one is going to run to Wal-Mart to buy Sonic Boom so they can get the re-recorded bonus cd, they're going to pick it up for the new music...or they would be at the store right now grabbing the GOLD collection (or one of the many best of sets) from the band.

Let's be clear. Tommy and Eric aren't dressing up as Ace and Peter. They're dressing up as the Space Ace & Catman charachters that were created by Peter and Ace.
Nothing against Peter & Ace, they're talented musicians and great guys, but they sold the rights to those characters and their share in KISS.
Tommy and Eric are just new band members and part of a lineup change. Something that every band goes through.
While I would prefer to see those 2 create their own characters, makeup and costumes, I don't see anything wrong with having them play the 2 characters we all know.
When an actor quits a movie or doesn't sign up for the sequel, the part is re-cast and another actor steps in. That's the same situation we have here.

Right. So anyone doing a a live version of Stairway to Heaven should automatically alter the solo because it belongs to someone else.

Talking about the re-recorded CD and DVD, they did this to attract more customers and gain new fans from their classic songs. Michael Jackson's HIStory contains greatest hits as well and it is the best selling double CD album of all time and surely fans bought it because they love songs like Earth song or they don't care about us not because of Billie jean or thriller.

I'm not even a big KISS fan, but I like this song a lot. Sounds a lot like their classic stuff. I might actually need to buy this.
So much new stuff out there right now just plain blows.

I really think the production is awesome. Nice job Paul Stanley. It really has that "analog" feel to it. I think they used 2" reel. I'm sure it was mastered on pro tools or something. But recording into tape is hard to beat.

Some of you naysayers, or whatever you want to call yourselves, say KISS fans are a minority...whatever that means...but reading these posts Modern Day Delilah...there seems to be more positive feedback about the song than negative. I pretty much knew who was going to post negative anyway...lol. It's all good....rock on KISS.

Why do people make such a big deal of Thayer teaching Ace his solos? He was in a KISS tribute band. He HAD to learn ACE's solos for that and in order to teach them to Ace. ACE's solos, not Thayer solos.

OK, I have to say I was in the camp of "I'll never buy anything from these guys ... without Frehley" blah blah blah. But after hearing this I have to say it does rock. It really does sound like old Kiss! Maybe not pure 70s, but it reminds me of old Kiss. And I probably will buy it. Having said that, and nothing against Tommy Thayer, but Mr. Frehley is and always will be the King in my book. His new tune 'Outer Space' is a killer. Give it a listen if you haven't heard it. And from what I've heard of it, his cover of 'Fox on the Run' smokes too.

yeh dude i also herd it was mastered on pro tools...i think the reason is because its easier to edit and cut/paste than on the old tapes...but very true, it does sound analog and old 70's style but just with more bite and more aggressive and clearer guitars...some old 70's guitar sounds were too fuzzy and weak, but this riff in MDD really packs a huge punch
