OZZY OSBOURNE's New Guitarist GUS G. To Make His Debut At BLIZZCON, According To RANDALL
- Aug. 21, 2009
|
|
As BLABBERMOUTH.NET first reported on August 3, Randall Amplifiers now appears to have confirmed via its Facebook page that 28-year-old Greek guitarist Gus G. ( FIREWIND) has been tapped to play with OZZY OSBOURNE at the closing concert of this year's BlizzCon, which will take place August 21-22 at the Anaheim Convention Center. However, it should be noted that this information has not yet been corroborated by anyone in the Osbourne camp and should be treated as a rumor only. In addition to his current axe-slinging duties with FIREWIND, Gus (real name: Kostas Karamitroudis) — who has an endorsement deal with Randall — has played in MYSTIC PROPHECY, NIGHTRAGE, ARCH ENEMY and DREAM EVIL. It is not presently clear who will sit behind the kit for OZZY OSBOURNE's performance at BlizzCon, since his longtime drummer, Mike Bordin, is currently on the road in Europe with the reunited FAITH NO MORE. Ozzy told Classic Rock magazine in a June 2009 interview that he was on the lookout for a new guitar player, apparently to replace Zakk Wylde. He also indicated that he was auditioning a guitarist from Greece, but declined to give further details. As for why he wanted to break away from Wylde, who has played with Ozzy on and off since 1988, Ozzy said, "I haven't fallen out with Zakk, but Zakk's got his own band, and I felt like my stuff was beginning to sound like ( Wylde's band) BLACK LABEL SOCIETY. I just felt like I wanted a change, y'know?" In an interview with a Eugene, Oregon radio station on July 29, Zakk slammed Ozzy over his Classic Rock comments, saying in part, "I've gotta be honest with you. The boss hasn't even given me a phone call, so I mean... I'm just like... I don't know what's going on over there. Are we doing this thing or are we not doing it? . . . I mean, it's like, dude, you don't wanna play with me anymore? Fine. Play with whoever the hell you wanna play with. I couldn't give a rat's ass. Like I'm gonna get all jealous or whatever. But you know what?! Man up and give me a phone call and tell me what the hell's going on." Wylde's answer after that abruptly turned into an obscenity-filled rant directed at Ozzy that had to be heavily bleeped by the station. The former BLACK SABBATH singer has been working on his latest solo album at his home studio in Los Angeles, He said that Wylde had recorded material for the project, but added, "I don't know if I want to use it." The largest event of its kind, BlizzCon is a celebration of Blizzard Entertainment's Warcraft, Diablo, and StarCraft game universes and the global player communities surrounding them. At the closing ceremony on August 22, Ozzy will unleash a thunderous spectacle of rock to put the Lich King in his place and cement his own title as the one true Prince of Darkness. I haven't liked anything Ozzy has done in around 20 years. This could change that though. Hopefully Gus. G will have a large influence on the sound of his next album and its not written by other collaborators or something.

From the moment Ozzy said he was out for a Greek guitarist, I had a feeling it would be Gus.
Saw him live once with Firewind, now that guy can play! Firewind always was a vehicle for him to showcase his skills to bigger bands. So he finally got what he ultimately wanted. Good for him. One minor thing, his writing style is kinda cheesy...

I don't know what to say! Ozzy hasn't put out a worthwhile album in nearly 20 years; or at least one relevant to the metal world. I don't know who this guy is, but not only does he rip, he's actually metal! Finally somebody in Ozzy's camp is setting his walker on the right track and pointing him in the direction of talent, rather than familiarity.
Zack blows...his style is played out. Even he know's it; why do you think he's drunk all the time...he hate's himself! Lame ass wanna be redneck biker who has bred an army of idiots who will pay over a hundred dollars for faux biker gang patches to sew on there leather jackets...and then get their asses kicked by REAL biker gangs!
Next step I hope is getting rid of Blasko, or whatever his lame is. And I love Bordin and all, but maybe now is the time to just bring in a whole new crew. All fresh blood, with the exception of the geriatric vocalist.
Get into the studio NOW! This could be the boost his career needs.

After hearing "Dude, you've been spinning your wheels on rehashed and homogenized tunes" from everyone and their mother, Ozzy finally did someting about it. Hail the new blood. FINALLY!!!

And repetitive pentatonic wanking is SO FUCKING NINETIES. It worked when metal wasn't "cool" but now that people respect good playing again, ZAAK IS PLAYED OUT..
Fuck that Mallcore douchebag.. Good riddance, not that I'd ever buy any Ozzy again if my life depended on it.
Zaak would probably get dizzy at even playing a lick of Gus's at half speed..but that was acceptable in the nineties.
Vestiges of the groove metal/nu metal apocalypse that nearly kiled metal, BEGONE!

Fuck Gus G! And Fuck Ozzy! The first time I saw Ozzy was Dec 30th 1981 at the Cow Palace. A great 45 minute show, thanks to Randy Rhodes! They have been fucking their fans for 30 years. The shortest concert I have ever seen by a headliner since then. Hey Sharon, Fuck You! Thank you Randy for that 45 minutes because it was your show not that Brain Dead Graiveytrain. It makes me sick at an Ozzfest when the Real Sabbath is playing and the crowd is chanting Ozzy. I chant Tony, Because that is the man that allowed these Fuckers to be the Assholes that they are. As I see now with the Kerslake and Daisley thing. What pieces of Shit. I guarentee that he has 10 times the amount of vocal tape machines that David Coverdale does. I saw Whitesnake recently. How you can pull the microphone away 2 feet and the pitch never changes? Zakk Fucking Rocks, Maybe a bit too much piano on the last album, At least make that shit tracks 8 to 12. give me some guitar. Fuck Gus G, I will never go see him because of Sharon and Ozzy. I will be probably missing out on a great guitarist, but , who gives a fuck. You sue Tony Iomi when you were too good for Sabbath all of those years, Now you want a piece. Fuck Off and Fuck Off Gus G!! I am sorry Gus, You are probably real good but I won't have any part of those Fucking Assholes any longer!

Is jumping the gun. Shall I remind you all of Joe Holmes? And Alex Skolnick? Both guitarists were in Ozzy's band for short periods of time. Niether one would ever record a studio lp with Ozzy. I welcome new blood in the Ozzy camp but I wouldn't doubt if it's just for this Blizz gig.
Furthermore this Gus guy is technically proficient. But he lacks any personality. Thats what Ozzy has always had a knack for finding. Unique guitarists with personality. Say what you want about Wylde the guy really has his own unique vibe. Gus sounds like a typical power metal neoclassical guitarist. So we'll see.

Wow... I had no idea there were so many Zakk haters out there!!! First off... Zakk Wylde is the man! One of the best guitar players out there! To say all he does is fast pentatonics, or pinch harmonics is ridiculous! Thats his signatures/specialties! Even Ozzy said that when they first got together in '88! He's a classic rocker/metal guitarist with a shot of steroids in the ass, beefed up for a new generation! And he has always show respect to those he looks up to and came before him! Ever seen BLS live? Ever heard any of the other records outside of Ozzy and BLS that Zakk has done? The man is diverse as shit! Blues, Rock, Country, Jazz, Chicken Picken, Metal, Classical, and piano!??!?! He's got it all! Plus... anyone remember DimeBag Darrell? He always said Zakk is one of the greatest, and was one of his favorite guitar players kickin it! He liked Zakk so much so they became best of friends!!! So to say Zakk sucks, is to also say that DimeBag sucks! And fuck you if thats what you think... Dime was/is an Idol, a hero, and an original! Unlike Gus here... sounds generic as hell like most kids now a days! Sure you know your modes, scales, and shit, but where is the style? Heart? Passion? Feel? Thats where Zakk and Dime come in and tear you face off and heart out! Its stepping out there and doin something all your own... and shit loads of guitarist in rock/metal have and will always look up to and rip off these 2 guys! And as for the guy who says Zakk is a redneck drunk... he's from Jersey, is a very respectful gentleman, comes from a military family, and look at the guy... does he look like a wasted drunk? He's ripped... looks and sounds healthy, and has a family at home... Ever heard of problems with Zakk on the road or at home... especially due to drinkin? Nope... Now... Ozzy is a Metal GOD you dumb disrespectful punks! The rest of Sabbath are too, Iomi, Butler, and Ward are all the godfathers of Metal as we know it! Without any component of that classic lineup it wouldn't have been as inovative as it was for their time! Im only 25 and I know this to be true... Ozzy was the dark, ruff vocalist, Iomi down tunned his guitars and was working with distortion early on... plus Iomi uses almost nothing but pentatonics like most in the 70's did... Ward's pounding double bass attack with that huge kit, and Geezer's fast ripping thunderous bass are all first of their time! Ozzy and Sharon's issues with Iomi and the Sabbath rights are justified, and hey pepole, its called the music "business" im in it, and if I spent all those years working my ass off, sacraficing, and giving what I had to a band, I would want my rights to the merch, album, and name sales too! Everyone would... you can't deny it, and if you say so, you'll never make it in music or entertainment in general! You have to protect your music... would you want to spend years working on something, and then years later have others making money off of it and you getting nothing? And thats goes for anything in life, not just music! Ozzy is past his prime for sure though, but GODDAMN man he's in his fucking 60's! Im happy for him to still be here kickin! I really do hope regarless of all this B.S. that the next Ozzy record is good, for him and nobody else! Granted I will agree the last Ozzy record, Black Rain, was sounding like BLS B sides, and there were songs on the last BLS record that could have been on that Ozzy record, so maybe it was time for a change for both these GODs of Rock/Metal... I can agree with that. But I don't think Gus is the guy to bring new life to Ozzy's career. His legacy is built and nobody can take that from him! Anything he does you can be a fan and support, or not and still buy Sabbath records, and Ozzy with Randy Roads, Jake E. Lee, and the early stuff with Zakk is amazing!!! Part too is, Ozzy's lyrics... not so much anymore... wish he would channel the Ozzy of old more, but he is clean, rich, healthy, and more famous now then ever! I mean he used to be thought of as the son a satan by so much of American society, now somehow he's in commercials, primetime TV, etc... Funny how the world takes years to catch up to true Rock and Metal... Rock on Ozzy, Zakk, and Sabbath... I support you all 100% and I hope all this leads to better music, relationships, and lives for all involved! Wheww, thanks for reading... stay brutal and true!!!

...but all we can know for sure is that Gus likely will be playing this show - no more, no less. As someone else wrote, there have been other temporary guitarists for brief periods too, and it doesn't at all have to mean that Gus will join on a permanent basis.
Whereas Gus "easily" can rehearse an Ozzy set and probably make a great job of it, it's not as easy to re-locate, put his own band on hold and - above all - write an album for someone with such a legacy as Ozzy. Lots of pressure there, and who knows if he'd even want that?
Then again, let's say that Ozzy has 2-3 more years as an active (well..) artist. Gus could do that time and elevate his career (and Firewind) to a whole new level.

I'm not the biggest fan of Zakk's contributions to Ozzy albums over the years . . . sometimes he's great and sometimes it sounds like we've all heard it before BUT . . .
Make absolutely NO MISTAKE . . . Zakk can play ANYTHING that ANYBODY can play on the guitar. This man has "what he likes" and what he's comfortable with in a particular vein, but he can literally play anything.
Why he hasn't allowed this to be heard more often, I do not know. Maybe he wants to appeal to one specific audience? I'm not sure, but I know that his limitations are self-imposed, or at least "Ozzy-Management" imposed, if you know what I mean.

Indeed, if Mr. G is permanent, Ozzy's done. I would PAY TO SEE ZAKK WYLDE for an OZZY show. I hate to break it to you "NEW SCHOOL" metal fanatics....but GUS G's talents belong to Firewind (power metal). Is he gonna now suddenly act like Zakk Wylde....PLAY blues/based metal??? Heck, ZAKK WYLDE plays what GUS G. plays in his sleep. If he is permanent and get paid to "CHANGE" his style for Ozzy....then give him 1 or 2 albums, and OZZY is out, retired. What a way to end your career...."without the guy who gave you 20+ years of his life and made you as successful that you are!" Good luck to Mr. G and Zakk...keep rockin!

Gus G. seems like a talented guitar player....but there's a million guys out there who can play technical guitar licks but can't write a memorable album (or song) worth a shit. As for Ozzy, I love everything from Blizzard through No More Tears (and even a few songs from Ozzmosis were pretty killer) but he's put nothing but crap out since the mid 90's. His voice is mediocre at best now, and I honestly don't think changing guitarists makes any difference at this point....and that's assuming Gus G. actually makes it onto an Ozzy record. Zakk is definitely overdone at this point too, but his style was a major component as to why No Rest for the Wicked, No More Tears, and (for the mostpart) Ozzmosis were such strong records. Getting rid of him after all these years is gonna turn a lot of people off. I'll take Heaven and Hell over Ozzy any day.

Like others have said, Ozzy has been done for years. Ever since Daisley, Kerslake and Zakk quit writing the songs, his albums have sucked. Don't get me wrong, I dig Ozzy but he has been the least part of any songwriting on any album he's ever done. Good luck to Gus. Maybe he will be the spark that Ozzy needs but if he's still using the same songwriters he has since the early 90's, the album will be just as lame as the last ones have been.
Hopefully, Zakk will be free from the Ozzman for good now. BLS is great and I would much rather have an album that Zakk gets to play what HE wrote instead of some tool hired by the Osbournes.

I'm a Jake E Lee fan and would have liked to see him back. At least, Gus seems to be a pretty good axeman so maybe Ozzy will be good for a few more years. As long as $haron doesn't get to involved it could be interesting. Just do one more old school kick ass album Ozzy and then call it a day..

So what do you suggest, we keep mum until he records an album? Ozzy just made a very progressive move for his standards. He fired his long time guitar mainstay for a younger, and significantly more metal guitarist.
People are either excited for some new music, or pissed that Zack is gone. That's what people do on here man...they vent.

Learns how to detune. He'll have to for Ozzy's voice or what's left of it. This pisses me off about Zakk though. I've been a fan of his playing from day one. Everyone complains about his pinch harmonics but you know its Zakk when you hear him playing. He's got a signature sound. If he just played everything straight, people would complain he sounded too generic. It's a no win situation. I still like the guy and have met him once. He was super cool and very down to earth. Just my 2 cents.

We´ll see what happens: up to `The Ultimate Sin´ Ozzy´s albums are absolute classics, but I haven´t EVER dug Zakk since Ozzy´s first album with him: to me he is boring and overrated (just my opinion, right?). I am skeptical to recover my faith in Ozzy again, but´time will tell. I am glad that guy is gone, Ozzy needs renewal, and the guy is really good, I just hope he fills the shoes suitably.

Glad Zakk's gone. He's never put out a decent album with Ozzy. He should stick to acoustic/soft stuff, it's streets ahead of his heavy stuff, which is mostly boring. I'm interested to see what Gus will bring to the table (assuming he gets to record an album with Ozz).
About Ozzy's setlist, it has pretty much been the same for the last decade or so, but he did do a pretty cool setlist in 2003:
War Pigs Mr. Crowley Believer Flying High Again I Don't Know Gets Me Through Goodbye to Romance Miracle Man Bark at the Moon The Wizard After Forever Into the Void Fairies Wear Boots Iron Man Sweet Leaf Children of the Grave Fire in the Sky Suicide Solution No More Tears I Don't Want to Change the World Road to Nowhere Crazy Train Mama I'm Coming Home N.I.B. Paranoid
I remember reading around the time that it was recorded for a DVD, but I don't know if there's any truth to it or not.

Ozzy's music will always be relevant and his music will always be a staple for what a band should sound like, its like Sabbath. Take from the formula and you have success it is the same with Ozzy's music. I'm a huge Zakk fan but I tell ya, I was getting tired of hearing the anthem all the time and watching him drink a beer and throw it in the crowd. As for Ozzy not makeing good music for the last 20 yrs, there is not one bad Ozzy album. Some are great and some are good, there are no bad albums. The Oz man made a great choice! I'm sure he will bow out with this guy and he needs to go out with a bang. You know with this guy he will, Gus is going to completely change his sound and with the way he plays I'm sure he will do a great job with the classic stuff. I have a feeling that if Oz and Gus do an album it will be the best that Oz has done in a long time. As a true Ozzy fan for life I'm very excited about this move. I'm lookin forward to Ozzfest and the new album. For a guy in his 20s I have never had the honor of seein Ozzy with a new great guitar player. Joe Holmes sucked!! Zakk and Ozzy have been a team pretty much my whole life and they created some killer albums together and I saw some great shows with them but I'm glad I get to see a transition. I'm glad I get to hear some new life pumped into Ozzy's music.

i love firewind's first three cds, dream evil and mystic prophecy with or without gus g. my wish is for ozzy to take full advantage of gus g's technical wizardy. he is a true heavy metal guitarist, so anything less than a heavy metal album, yes, assuming that he get's to record with ozzy, will be a waste of his talents.

Being a Ozzy/Zakk fan I downloaded some Firewind to see that the big deal is. I honestly do no see why people are so excited about Gus G. He is a very technical player but has no soul to his playing and it is just not metal. Nu-metal is very different from Ozzy's style of metal.
Everyone complaining about Zakk being a drunken redneck is wrong. These complainers are the people that would go to an Ozzfest wearing Tommy Hilfiger, complain about the heat and complain about the drunks moshing. Many of you are too young to have been to Pantera and Ozzy and remember what REAL metal was.
Gus G's playing sounds like a bumble bee that escaped from Trans-Siberian Orchestra or Mannheim Steamroller. This Nu-metal is not TRUE metal. Maybe Ozzy is releasing a Christmas album with Gus G. Maybe the album will be good. Who knows.
Also those posting the set list need to remember from the first set posted 5 are Randy Rhoads song, 4 are Zakk songs. I do not think Gus G will do any of the Zakk music justice.

for the uninformed, firewind is a power metal band. nu-metal bands do not play technically and are commonly devoid of lead guitar solos. occasionally, firewind crosses over to thrash territory but never losing their power metal stylings. i don't know how and where did the conclusion come about that gus g's playing is nu-metal? furthermore, if his playing sounds like a bumble bee that just escaped from the trans-siberian orchestra, then he must be good. that is stinging guitar playing and fans of true heavy metal love that.
on the other hand, downloading firewind songs and listening to them for the first time does not guarantee appreciation and satisfaction for this genre. especially if one is unfamiliar with power metal.

This guy sure knows how to shred, but that's about it. His playing is extremely generic, academic in the most boring way. Randy Rhoads was also academic, classically trained and all, but the man had creativity and a distinctive sound. Gus G. is more like another pale copy of your typical neoclassical power metal band that keeps playing the same scales over and over and over and over and over. I didn't like Wylde either but I don't get great hopes from this association.

COMMENT | Gus G Nu Metal?

Naw you have it the other way around, Zaak Wylde is closer to nu metal than the Euro Power Metal stuff that has come out the past 15 years, that all the macho nu/groove metal douchebags seemed to be scared of touching (because its actually pretty good). And Arch Enemy are hardly nu metal (Well except Anthems..lol)..
I'm not a huge Gus G fan (my name is from the ULI album, not Gus G, I picked it way before I heard of the band Firewind), but I am happy that the zeitgeist has changed into a more technical type of playing, not to mention something that goes beyond mere pentatonics in the metal scene. For years, all the virtuosos were thought of as Dimebag and Wylde- and both those guys are ok, but there are many many others who have made their mark over the years- and even though I am extremely critical of anything Ozzy/Sharon related, I can say they finally acknowledged that the nineties/early 2000s are over, and with it alot of the pseudo macho posturing that Groove and Nu metal represented, along with Wylde, YES Pantera, Limp Bizkit, Korn, etc.
I dissed Pantera? A sacred cow for American "metal" fans- well yes I did. I did like Pantera, but always thought their "Sound" dominated the American metal landscape too much. There was Black Metal, Prog Metal, Progressive Power Metal, Viking Metal, Technical Death Metal, Power Metal, Traditional Metal, and other types of metal during the nineties but unfortunately the "dRUNKEN REDNECK METAL" of Wylde, Pantera, and company dominated (And bands such as Machine Head at times would play a "Crossover" of Groove/Nu metal, but the point is Groove and Nu were somewhat related, as in my opinion Nu metal was a watering down of groove metal with Rap and other genres added on (Along with Faith No More).
The whole point being- any type of virtuosity past "soulful bluesy playing" was squashed as being "Wanky and eighties". Ozzfest had bands like Sevendust, kORN, Disturbed, etc- guys who didn't want to stand out and play anything complicated as to scare the rednecks who thought Black Sabbath and Ozzy's solo band are one and the same while smoking endless amounts of dope and drinking endless amounts of Huber in their trailer trash homes.
The intelligent types of metal from Europe and some of the American underground (From Swedish Melodic Death metal to Norwegian Black Metal to American Prog Metal) were not even known by many fans, as people like me had to pay for expensive import Cds of bands noone heard of but would headline Wacken.
Sweep arpeggios and other stylistic flourishes probably would've been lost on most of the American Groove/Nu metal types, as it was something WAY BEYOND any of their means or skills.
Just because you're used to listening to Pantera and Lamb Of God instead of Sonata Arctica and Dream Theater doesn't mean the playing with those bands is "unsoulful" (ok in Dream Theater is sometimes is, lol)..but the point I'm trying to make is- the Groove metal/Nu Metal stranglehold that was on American metal jumped the shark around 2004 or so in the states, you noticed when Maiden did the Ozzfest and had a HUGE reception over the bullshit that Sharon was peddling at the time (The egging, etc). Thats when the overly simplistic/macho/douchebag style of metal jumped the shark, and when good taste started to prevail again. Of course, you see bands like Bullet for my Valentine acknowledge the more traditional/melodic/complex types of metal (er what Lars used to call "euro metal sound") but they still suck. Thats not my point, my point is that Zaak represented (To me) the nineties way of doing things that I hated. The growly macho dunderheaded riffs and his "Rednecks who never read a book in their lives" Society, the endless pentatonic wanking with halfass drunken ramblings, the dunderheaded endless pinch harmonics (ok i do pinch harmonics too but not THAT much), all this got OLD with Ozzy's band. Its ok if he does it on his own, but like I said that style has jumped the shark with Ozzy. Now I still think the stuff has a place- its after all cyclical- but the point is that I am happy with Ozzy's choice, even if its still a sham, the whole Ozzy enterprise that is. And even though I just knocked on Zaak Wylde for a few minutes, I still liked the first two Ozzy with him- not much into BLS though, but their fans probably ruined it more than anything (And thats my concern, lol).

I love Zakk but, even so, I was getting sick of him playing with Ozzy all these years. The time for change is way overdue. A new guitarist is a good move.
Now if Ozzy would only retract his stupid lawsuit against Iommi. I don't know how Ozzy's people managed to convince him this was a good idea. They try to say that Ozzy saved Sabbath but the truth is that Sabbath only suffered when they had a no-name singer (Tony martin). Sabbath with Dio or Gillan was hugely successful during their times. You might say Sabbath suffered more when they lost Dio or Gillan than they did when they lost Ozzy. When Ozzy was canned, sabbath still kept filling arenas for years after. It was only when Tony Martin stepped in that things started to slide (still a good singer - just not a big name like the others).
Ozzy's people also say that, because of Ozzy, the band now plays to 50,000 people every night. Excuse me?? Everybody knows that, with the exception of a handful of European markets, Ozzy has zero interest in performing with Sabbath unless he's using them to sell his Ozzfest - and everybody knows the vast majority of Ozzfest veues hold 19,000 to 26,000 with only a couple of exceptions. And let's not forget how many shows Ozzy forced the band to cancel.
All the brain-dead, born-yesterday kids on ozzy's website can wallow in their narrow-minded idealism and say that the band should belong to all four members equally - but that's not how things work in the real world. I trust Iommi to be the guardian of Sabbath. The band needs a father figure - one who's not a sellout. It's been proven over the years: Ozzy does what's best for Ozzy, Iommi does what's best for Sabbath.
In the ten years since the reunion, Sabbath played an average of about 20 shows per year. With Dio, Heaven and Hell played 99 shows in their first year. And they also released a great album, something Ozzy prevented them from doing for ten years. I guess Ozzy was too busy promoting video games and appearing on talk shows.
There are so many more examples but does anyone really need any more proof that Ozzy does not deserve any control of Black Sabbath??
The whole lawsuit thing just makes me sick!
I may be a huge Ozzy fan, but I'm not stupid. To hell with Ozzy's Hollywood greed-head lawyers! support Iommi now! Buy the new H&H album. Go to ozzy.com and tell then what Ozzy is doing is wrong!
For the sake of Sabbath's creative output, marketed merchandise, live performances, respect towards their fans and integrity, Iommi needs to be the one in charge of Black Sabbath.

The problem with what you're saying is that it's extremely bi-polar and limited. Yeah, Machine Head and co were fucking terrible and dominated the mainstream metal scene far too long, but why do you feel like the only answer to that should be a regression into 1980s power metal aesthetics? hell, melodic power metal is absolutely the most uncreative and sterile genre in metal, just ike this whole wave of 80s nostalgia we're going through these days! For fuck's sake, good for you if you like that, but at least listen to the originals instead of all those stupid bird brained imitators (since when does playing neat but dull melodies heard a million times before make you smarter than the tuffguy you diss?)
I can already smell it : when this wave's over, the 90s stuff will come back in full force! and the trend wagon goes on and on and on.
Why not move on with something fresh and new? because it's sure far more difficult than rehashing the same old shit over and over, but that's what makes art infinitely rewarding and worth supporting.

If we really go back, the originals would be black Sabbath, deep purple, led zeppelin & Uriah heep… of course, there’s more than just those bands. Then we move a few years forward and you have judas priest, rainbow, scorpions, motorhead, iron maiden… I don’t need to drop all these names but if only to ponder on your notion of listening to the originals.
Having pointed that out, the “stupid bird brained imitators,” however, is not limited to bands of melodic power metal “playing neat dull melodies heard a million times,” but to bands of every genre, and that includes metal bands you’re into. I say 98% of the bands around every genre are imitators who play dull that have been heard a million times. And, yes, stuff do come back, from every genre.

newsflash : bands that do something new are not legion but they exist and I support them.
I am aware that everyone takes inspiration from older stuff, but there's a difference between being inspired and being a rip off. You've got to add a little (or a big) something to what's been done before, otherwise you belong in a garage or a pub cover band. I guess bands like Dragonforce, Bonded by Blood or Firewind belong in the latter category

So if a band doesn't play simplistic groove stuff they automatically sound "80s"? That wasn't my point. Does Necrophagist sound 80s? Does Decrepit Birth? Did Emperor? HARDLY. My point is that the euro metal melodies are back in metal unlike the boring groove riffs of the dunderhead 90s AMERICAN mainstream metal (metal archives dork elitists would use the word "mallcore" but I won't go that far). As for the guy who thought that Gus G sounded nu metal, or that it sounded like "Trans Siberian Orchestra", ahem, thats what alot of metal is SUPPOSED to sound like.
Necrophagist is an example of the evolution of metal, and guys like Sucimez and Michael Romeo could play circles around Herman Li.
Btw- Dragonforce is a watered down novelty injected reiteration of a lot of the NINETIES power metal- bands such as Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian, latter day Helloween etc. Those guys should know THEIR roots.
Anyone who pays attention should know that I listen to bands from all eras of metal, but I just have a special disdain for some of the overreach of trends in the nineties metal. That doesn't mean neo classical scales in metal sounds 80S at all though..just GOOD, how about that?

The only reason Ozzy's new albums sold at all was due to the credibility Zakk instilled.
With him gone, sure , this album might do OK (please see the dip in record sales when they last excluded Zakk - "Down to earth") but the long term credibility is now GONE.
I still can't believe the attitude towards a legend like Zakk, you fucking people make me sick, sure Zakk drinks, so do I , so do you ...half of you are drunk now!!!!

Ozzy may be the king, but his treatment of the whole Zakk Wylde thing is pussy-flavored at best. Bitch move. Plus, Ozzy writes nothing. He's nothing without his guitarists, beyond a Madonna-esque posterboy for metal. Show some fuckin respect, Ozzy. I love you but come on.

The main difference in the posts to this site seems to be where the post come from. Most Americans want Zakk Wylde and most Europeans want Gus G. Just noticing a trend.
Ozzy's solo work guitarists have been American in the past. I think change can be good. I think Americans want to hear a different Ozzy sound than Europeans.
Also, my post above states that the Randall comment made had been deleted and Randall will not comment on the issue until next week. May have been submitted ahead of time but has since been pulled.

Thank god Sakk is out. Ozzy hasn't had a good Metal guitarist to record with since Jake E. Lee.
No more boring riffs with continuous pinch Harmonics.

Gus G is a solid player with no stage presence. He sounds like he feel off the Trans Siberian Orchestra train. Maybe Oz is going to pull a christmas album out of his Depends diaper. (Fuck you $haron!) Zakk has a solid stage presence and can shred. This Blizz con is going to be a yawner to watch. Might sound good?
Good luck Gus G, you will need it dealing with that snake in the grass bitch $haron.
I am happy for Zakk, sorry they treated you this way. But you got your own gig now and it is blowing up all over the world. Briliant idea of a society fan base. I see more BLS shirts and gear all the time. I have seen BLS live 9 or 10 times. Coolest bunch of people (fans) you could ever hope to hang out with.
Long live the Society! SDMF!

Mike Bordin is a great drummer but with Gus G The Oz Man needs someone with outstanding Double Bass skills! i.e. Gene Hoglen, Tommy Aldridge again would be awsome, or Pual Bastoff. Thats my opinion and thats all that Matters!

The old people complaining about Gus G is hilarious. Yes I know his power metal stuff can borderline on extremely cheesy, but I highly doubt that will be what, if anything, him and Ozzy create as an album. I recommend checking out the first 2 Nightrage cds. If you old farts can handle Tomas Lindbergs amazing screaming, it is some of the best melodic death metal to come out in the 2000s.
Oh and Zakk Wylde CANNOT play everything on guitar. to say that shows the lack of guitar playing knowledge that people have. His picking technique, while being good for his style, limits his precision if he chose to do some of the things that Gus G can do (advanced string skipping, 4+ string sweeping. Zakk can do runs probably as good as Gus, but little else. His rhythm playing is also total shit compared to guys like James Hetfield and Scott Ian)

it will be a fresh "new Guitar tone" for the ozzy band now! something the band has needed since wicked days! Gus G might be/not be but the new guitar tone is welcome.

im european i dont care of the guiarist is american or european just that he's good and has great stage presence. and Zakk can play most styles but he doesnt play them with his bands like many great guitarists do, Petrucci could write anything but he chooses to use the talent he has and write more complex stuff. Slash also is many times better then he shows, but still he's great too, but he's just more of a blues player. and saying Zakk is worse rythm guitarist then hetfield and Ian is just stupid i think, they cant play solos very good and i bet if Zakk would suddenly be a rythm guitarist in a band he would be just as good or many times better just like many other great lead guitarists. and Ozzy's sales have been getting lower mostly because he's getting older just like with anyone else, it happens to anyone, no matter how good their new stuff is, there will always be some younger bands coming around and taking over the limelight, no matter if they are better or worse then the bands before, usually worse at least in the last 5-10 years the bands in the charst have been getting worse and worse and mostly because they are bunch none talented money crapping bitches.
and saying something bad about Zakk because he drinks is just stupid, they great bands used to do lots of drugs and drinking and did music mostly for music sakes, but no the big companys are to afraid to sign bands like that anymore but we have many smaller companys with many great bands that maybe would have gonna big 10-20 years ago, that are many times better then the crap on the charts, but theres always a few execptions.
i just hope the next Ozzy album will be good and i also hope the next BLS album will be good too.

I DONT CARE EITHER. I LIKE OZZY, SAW HIM AND ROB ZOMBIE BACK IN 01'. GOOD SHOW. BUT, I AM MORE OF A ZAKK FAN. BLACK LABEL OWNS. ZAKK WILL BE JUST FINE WITHOUT OZZY.
PISS... 'OZZMOSIS' WAS A PRETTY GOOD ALBUM. TO EVERYONE SAYING OZZY HAS NOT PUT OUT A GOOD ALBUM IN 20 YEARS.

that Gus lacks passion and personality in his playing while Zakk plays with some feeling. That being said I think it was time for a change also. Ozzy and Zakk have grown style together and Ozzy needs a new guitar sound.

newsflash : bands that do something new are not legion but they exist and I support them.
-- and no one is taking that away from you because i also support them... no argument there.
I am aware that everyone takes inspiration from older stuff, but there's a difference between being inspired and being a rip off. You've got to add a little (or a big) something to what's been done before, otherwise you belong in a garage or a pub cover band.
-- nice... and? ... because i agree with you here as well.
I guess bands like Dragonforce, Bonded by Blood or Firewind belong in the latter category.
-- clearly, it only shows your bias against other types of metal other than what you're into. and for the record, i do not listen to happy power metal bands but to each his own.

Any BLS or Ozzy riff ive heard hasnt been as rhythmically technical as say Blackened or almost any track off of Among the Living. Now I havent heard every single BLS track, and I know theres a chance that Zakk can do it and maybe just chooses not to, but based on what ive heard, his rhythm guitar playing is average at best. For that style, his rhythm playing isnt really that important anyway because, as people have said earlier, he plays a more groove style of metal.

Herman Li and Dragonforce are a total joke. They play their music half as fast live and twice as sloppy. If you cant perform your music live, what are you really worth as a guitarist and live musician? Necrophagist, on the other hand, plays their material just as fast, if not faster, and in the 3 times ive seen them ive been able to hear maybe 5 mistakes in total from Muhammad. Like his music or not, you have to respect his technically superiority.
