M.A.N Claims To Be First Metal Band Ever To Incorporate 'Full Scale Quarter Tone System'
- Aug. 28, 2009
|
|
M.A.N — the group formed out of the ashes of Sweden's TRANSPORT LEAGUE (featuring former MNEMIC frontman Tony Jelencovich) — has tapped Ulrich Wild ( WHITE ZOMBIE, STAIND, STATIC-X, DEFTONES, PANTERA, LIMP BIZKIT) to mix the band's third album, "Massive, Audio, Nerve". The band will enter Grand Recordings in Gothenburg, Sweden on September 18 with engineer Svein Jensen to begin laying down 14 songs for the CD, which will be produced by Jensen and M.A.N. Commented the group: "From past to present time, different kinds of expressions within the 'music worlds' have evolved and been combined with each other. This has given us exciting musical transformations in classic music, art music, folk music, popular music etc, as well as development of the 'tools' of making music; music instruments, tone systems, tuning systems, composition techniques etc. "One issue that is continuing to be 'separated' in a distinguished way, is the ideology and practice of using quarter/microtone semi tones, and how it is used in a traditional way, which appears to be very different from say like; Middle Eastern 'raj'/popular music , Indian music, compared to folk music from Sweden, Norway, Macedonia, Bulgaria, etc. "However, in western music cultures there has been some experimentation with alternative tone systems; in classical/ modernism music, for example, Charles Ives and Miklos Maros. Even in rock/art rock music, there has been occasions of achievement towards this, Steve Vai and Jeff Beck, for example, although in these cases it should be considered as a momentary and solistic element in their music creativity as a whole... It should also be mentioned that bands like LED ZEPPELIN and THE BEATLES only used the sound of 'exotic' instruments in their songs, not the practice of alternative tone systems in itself. "Summary: regarding western popular music [pop, rock, punk, metal, hard rock, electronica, goth etc] no stringent and consistent use of quarter semi tones has been used by any artist or band so far. "...Until now!!!!!! " M.A.N is very proud to declare to be the very first metal band ever to have incorporated what we call the 'Full Scale Quarter Tone System' into our music — and metal music genre on the whole, resulting in the upcoming album 'Massive, Audio, Nerve' by M.A.N. 'Full Scale Quarter Tone Systems' [our own term] means that there are 24 quarter semi tones, instead of 12 'ordinary' semi tones, within reach of an octave [1200 cent]. This has led to new kinds of expressions and possibilities that have never been heard before, especially when this concept — cultivated and formed by M.A.N — is featured by more than just a solistic issue in order of solo instrumentalist matter or a solo part, but covered by the string instrument section in whole songs, with state of equilibrium with the ordinary semi tone system." Tentative songtitles set to appear on "Massive, Audio, Nerve" are as follows: * Dead Set* Don't Wake Up* Logocide* Last Light Drains* Vivid Heart* Identical Abuse* Song # 3 "The Redemption"* False Memory Syndrome Pt. 1 & 2* Slave Program* Mock at my Motion* Loveless* Zero Status Zero* NothingAn audio file containing snippets of pre-production versions of some of the band's new songs can be streamed using the audio player below. "Blood Vanish", the latest video from M.A.N, can be viewed below. The song comes off M.A.N's sophomore album, "Peacenemy", which was released in Europe in March 2008 (April in North America) via Tief Druck Musik. The CD was recorded at Grand Recordings in Gothenburg, Sweden with producer/engineer Svein Jensen and was mastered by Göran Finnberg at Mastering Room. It features a guest appearance by Burton C. Bell of FEAR FACTORY and ACENSION OF THE WATCHERS on the track "My Own Sickness". For audio samples, visit www.myspace.com/manmusic.

The chromatic scale is problematic for the guitar, and pretty much everything has already been done with it in music. A new tuning system could open a new world, since people's ears are used to things sounding a bit "weird". Do remember that the first Black Sabbath albums sounded satanic because they used the tritonus, which nowadays doesn't really bother people at all.
That said, this band is the same crap as the rest of them, there is nothing that this new tuning brought into their music. This unmelodic "attitude" crap could have been done with normal guitars.
Still, maybe someone will take the idea an actually make music with it, instead of just slamming a few chords and screaming.

thats all good but it sounds like ASS. Sounds like a weak execution of Meshuggah style metal. Plus, the incoportation of these extra notes makes a lot of the music sound out of tune, which means any tone def persom could really just playing that stuff, which also makes it hard to sing over. I think the middle or end bit sound ok. Cut down the rest of the song's new age 24 scale crap and you're good.

I dont know how well it'll take off ....didn't really like the way they made use of the quarter notes tbh ,doesnt seem to be very catchy at all . Quarter note bends on the other hand have a more melodic quality without sounding so random and pointless.

In a metal context, these semitones are relatively undone, but a microtonal scale (43 notes per octave) was the basis of the work of Harry Partch since the 1940s - Look over the huge catalog of his output at www.Corporeal.com, a site dedicated to his work. A rather mad genius, he chose to be homeless for many years.
The fact is, while this band is *capable* of using semitones, this tune is written very much with typical western-scale patterning - And sounds like a thousand other nu-metal meatheads, despite the semitones. It's nice to hear the semitones here and there however.
In other news, that fruity-lookin dude needs a haircut. Stay outta Halford's closet, feller.

its truly amazing the lack of musical knowledge that is displayed on this website. First off, if you dont know what this means, go back to listening to nu metal or some other shit form of music. Its one thing of you arent into the type of music they play, but its a totally different, as asshole move, to rip on these guys lack of musicianship and creativity. It may sound like Meshuggah is a very important influence, but Meshuggah really is a whole different sub genre of metal, and this sounds like a logical evolution of that style. If you dont like Meshuggah then you probably dont like this so gtfo of this thread assface. You have to give these guys some credit for trying to take tech metal one step further than any other band has tried with this quarter tone system, and kudos to them for the dedication to their art

When i read the article, i was like "wow".
then listen to a couple songs and all i heard was conventionnal rock songwritting, conventionnal melodies, conventionnal 4/4 time signatures and monotonous, generic, chromatic and power chord-ish metal riffing. Meshuggah are FAR more complex than this for the matter.
I do hear quarter tones used on one song, but you could do that with a fretless guitar, or even a tremolo bar because it's very limited and gimmickish.
all in all this is pure pedantic bullshit and already regret the time wasted at listening to this crap.

I like what I've heard on the snippet. I think what launched the attack is pretty much the pretentious claims the band is promoting. If it ends up being so unique, people will figure it out and the tag will get attached to the band naturally. But now they try to self-proclaim themselves with some technical bullshit.

And Then There Were None hit it right on the head. if this is such crazy exotic music, why does it sound like the same ol same ol?
the thing is this: if your sound is truly unique, people shouldnt have to know youre doing microtonals or whatever.
sabbath had a unique sound cause of the tritone, but people who have no fucking idea what a tritone is still knew sabbath had a unique sound.

The same Soil, drowning pool, machine head crap ass non-talented musicians that fail at playing music so they have to drudge up an advertising scheme like this to draw attention to themselves. I "HATE" Nu metal. It was, is, and always will be lame.
The guitar has 22-24 frets. You can tune it any way you choose. Now learn some scales and buy yourself a better haircut.
