DIMMU BORGIR Splits With Keyboardist MUSTIS, Bassist/Vocalist VORTEX - Aug. 30, 2009
Mustis (keyboards; real name: Øyvind Mustaparta) and ICS Vortex (clean vocals, bass; real name: Simen Hestnæs) are no longer members of the Norwegian symphonic black metal band DIMMU BORGIR, according to a posting on Mustis' MySpace page. Both Mustis and Vortex were apparently either fired or had no other choice than to leave the group after years of disagreements. No further details are currently available, but it should be rather telling that Mustis has set the "mood indicator" on his MySpace page to "betrayed." (NOTE: Since this story was first published, Mustis has changed his "mood indicator" setting to "creative.")

An official statement on the matter from DIMMU BORGIR is expected to be released shortly.

Last year's "Blackest Of The Black" tour with DANZIG helped support DIMMU's latest DVD titled "The Invaluable Darkness", which debuted at No. 5 on the Top Music Videos chart in mid-October. It was also the band's last North American tour promoting their eighth studio album, "In Sorte Diaboli", which debuted on Billboard's Top Independent Albums chart at No. 2, and on The Billboard 200 chart at No. 43.

damn .. usually a band builds around the singer or guitar player, in this case Mustis and Vortex (specially the first) were essential to understand and enjoy DB, I cant see them getting musicians of that level, not that I´m a big fan of DB but they are talented musicians

Hestanes should beg his way back into Borknagar. Let Vintersorg keep singing lead but put Hestanes on bass / backup vocals. I bet the two of them singing choruses together and trading lines would be insanely good.

At least don't do anymore of this Ozzfest shiny-pants black metal horseshit.

Having to replace two members is going to be pretty tough, especially when one of them did the backing clean vocals. Maybe Shagrath will have Nicholas Cage's son trying to get in the band somehow now...

THANK YOU!

To be quite honest, Simen was limited in Dimmu and he was the only reason i could stomach them.

Please, for the love of Odin, either -

A. Reform Arcturus.
B. Continue playing with Lamented Souls as a main band.
C. Join Borknagar again.
D. Front your own band.

This is actually good news as we'll be able to see Simen concentrate on something better artistically. The guy was restricted in Dimmu Borgir. He could outdo the whole band on his own!

Now we need more Lamented Souls or maybe a new project?

Dimmu is over as NOBODY can recreate Simen's vocal parts and the material he's featured on is their best known.

I'm gonna hold back on judging this. I remember when Martin Powell left MDB: I thought they were in trouble. The album that followed was one of their best. As many have suggested, these guys can lend their talents to many other places. Dimmu was also getting pretty stagnant, IMO; so this might not be bad.

This is the worst news I could read! Vortexs' vocals cannot be re created! Mustis has an awesome career as a movie soundtrack composer though. I hope they come back with an album like the re-make of Stormblast. That one's my favorite and there are no clean vocals on it at all. This still sucks bad.

I am seriously bummed about this news as it clearly is the beginning of the end for these guys in all likelihood, and I think they have an incredibly unique sound - unlike anyone I've heard in this genre. Reading the comments from others, it's also clear that I'm in the minority. Would those of you who are among DB's critics, tell me who you think fills their shoes better? I'd like another band of this calibre/style/genre to check out. Thanks.

from the dimmu site:

On Aug. 30 2009, Mustis and Vortex were fired from Dimmu Borgir by Shagrath and Silenoz. Mustis received a text message, Vortex - an email. Here is Mustis's official statement that he and his girlfriend Jasmin asked me to publish on the Dimmu Borgir forum:

"Attention to all the worldwide fans of my work with Dimmu Borgir, I feel that I must begin my note to you all by saying that your dedication and interest in my musical work with Dimmu Borgir has been greatly appreciated by me for many, many years and you all have motivated me to continue to push the creative envelope farther each and every day. You might be able to see where this note is heading and if you are thinking correctly you will know that I am informing you all that I am no longer associated with the band and have left the ranks of Dimmu Borgir effective immediately.

My departure was not entirely of my own accord and while I had felt this change was something imminent for my future, my time had been spent addressing the fact that many songs written by me had not been registered properly under my name in their credits. Without naming every single track, let us just say that a good majority of albums like "Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia" and " In Sorte Diaobli" would have been vastly different had I not composed and created as much as I actually did. Sadly, based on terrible gaps in the communication process and a failure to find logical rationale for why this had been done this way found me hitting wall after wall as opposed to finding a professional and reasonable solution to the problem. My inquiries and investigation into the issues which I wished to resolve and move on from would in the end find me being fired from the group. No discussions about it, just "goodbye" (via text message).

I can say to you that this was not a new dispute and is something that has been going on for some years and since these are my individual creative rights and work that are being denied of me, we shall now let the resolution come from the lawyers instead of dealing with more dishonesty and lies on a one on one personal level. On this I cannot say anymore because we will be walking into sticky legal territory.

I mentioned earlier that my fans have motivated me to create great music again and again and they should know that I will continue to do this and shall return to them in the not too distant future with material that I hope will keep their Metal needs fed. In advance I will say that I thank you for notes and texts of support and ask that you please understand that there is not much more I can say on this, nor will be able to answer every single message that I get. I ask you to please keep tabs on my official MySpace page (links are below). I will do my best to post what I am legally allowed to share with you so you remain informed

stormblast and enthrone were their most tolerable albums. although puritanical is enjoyable here and there. shagrath's vocals have turned to shit. too many effects and very little effort on his part.

back to the beginning of my statement... this may be a good thing as their 2 best releases were before these two joined the band. i never cared for the this new key guy and simon himself never cared much for this band... i overheard him claim dimmu borgir "pays the bills" when they were shooting their last video here in LA (terrible video by the way). he's been involved in many projects and will easily find his way into something more enjoyable im sure.

now... how about an arcturus reunion!!! im sure sverd's got a shit load of material he would love to put together.

Vortex leaving is a bummer, especially since hes a big reason why their songs, on the albums hes on, are good. But those songs are that satisfying to me...as im not really a symphonic BM fan. So him leaving, unless hes replaced with someone similar and very good, probably wont be worth listening to. My favorite Dimmu albums are 'For All Tid' and 'Stormblast' (the original, of course) and hopefully, one day, they will return to their roots. Itd be cool if they did that *with* Vortex in the band as itd be a very interesting combination. But its not to be.

Mustis was the mastermind behind almost all compositions and all the symphonic aspect of DB sound. As for Vortex, he had this angelic voice, giving chills, especially on the best record they ever did, "puritanical.." now that both are gone, I don't see them recover. Shagrath does not have a great voice, at best he's a good Abbath-gimmicker. Those guys can't seem to be able to keep a drummer, and now they split with their best elements.

As lokislair said, Mustis was behind most of the symphonic part of their sound, so we can almost be sure their next album will be quite different. I liked him, but what the hell are they doing firing Simen "The Giant" Hestnaes?! He was the most talented and unique guy in the band!

Well, I hope that means he can reform Arcturus now.
