Former DIMMU BORGIR Keyboardist Claims He Was Fired Via Text Message - Aug. 30, 2009
Mustis (real name: Øyvind Mustaparta), the former keyboardist for the Norwegian symphonic black metal band DIMMU BORGIR, has released the following statement:

"Attention to all the worldwide fans of my work with DIMMU BORGIR: I feel that I must begin my note to you all by saying that your dedication and interest in my musical work with DIMMU BORGIR has been greatly appreciated by me for many, many years and you all have motivated me to continue to push the creative envelope farther each and every day.

"You might be able to see where this note is heading and if you are thinking correctly you will know that I am informing you all that I am no longer associated with the band and have left the ranks of DIMMU BORGIR effective immediately.

"My departure was not entirely of my own accord and while I had felt this change was something imminent for my future, my time had been spent addressing the fact that many songs written by me had not been registered properly under my name in their credits. Without naming every single track, let us just say that a good majority of albums like 'Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia' and 'In Sorte Diaobli' would have been vastly different had I not composed and created as much as I actually did. Sadly, based on terrible gaps in the communication process and a failure to find logical rationale for why this had been done this way found me hitting wall after wall as opposed to finding a professional and reasonable solution to the problem. My inquiries and investigation into the issues which I wished to resolve and move on from would in the end find me being fired from the group. No discussions about it, just 'goodbye' (via text message).

"I can say to you that this was not a new dispute and is something that has been going on for some years and since these are my individual creative rights and work that are being denied of me, we shall now let the resolution come from the lawyers instead of dealing with more dishonesty and lies on a one-on-one personal level. On this I cannot say anymore because we will be walking into sticky legal territory.

"I mentioned earlier that my fans have motivated me to create great music again and again and they should know that I will continue to do this and shall return to them in the not-too-distant future with material that I hope will keep their metal needs fed.

"In advance, I will say that I thank you for notes and texts of support and ask that you please understand that there is not much more I can say on this, nor will be able to answer every single message that I get. I ask you to please keep tabs on my official MySpace page. I will do my best to post what I am legally allowed to share with you so you remain informed."

As previously reported, Mustis indicated on his MySpace page that ICS Vortex (clean vocals, bass; real name: Simen Hestnæs) has also been dismissed from DIMMU BORGIR, but this has not yet been confirmed by Vortex or anyone else associated with the group.

An official statement on the matter from DIMMU BORGIR is expected to be released shortly.

Last year's "Blackest Of The Black" tour with DANZIG helped support DIMMU's latest DVD titled "The Invaluable Darkness", which debuted at No. 5 on the Top Music Videos chart in mid-October. It was also the band's last North American tour promoting their eighth studio album, "In Sorte Diaboli", which debuted on Billboard's Top Independent Albums chart at No. 2, and on The Billboard 200 chart at No. 43.

I agree.

While I enjoy Dimmu from time to time, and what he's done on the keys.... if he's so concerned with getting 'credit' for his music, why doesn't he form his own god damned band?

Quit crying, write/play music because you enjoy it... not because it makes you rich/famous.

It's too bad that Mustis couldn't work it out with the band (or vice versa). It's kind of scummy to fire someone through a text message. If it's that both ICS and Mustis are fired, I don't think that Galder will be enough to carry this band.

I wouldn't mind seeing a collaboration of ICS and Mustis or something like that. I thought Death Cult Armageddon was an amazing album.

None Balder than Galder.

He should start a new band called.... (I'm sorry, I just couldn't help it.)

BALDERS GATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To the metal head gamers looking for something to complain about ...I KNOW it's (game) spelled with a "U".
That could be his loophole.

I guess I still have Mayhem, Darkthrone, and Immortal.

It doesn't matter the spelling, considering back in the day it was just 'baldr' haha.

I've seen it written as Balder in some mythology, so that could work. He could call it 'Galder's Gate', that'd be kult.

Are you serious? I don't think this is about the money, I'd say it's more about the recognition. I'm sure as an artist, he wants to get credit for the work he's done (as well as get paid). Hell, I hate it when others get credit for the work I do at my meaningless job or when others get credit for someone else's work. It's more about principle than anything. I'm sure if he wrote most of those albums, he'll be in another band soon or his own.

Mustis appeared to be a great musician. It's a shame that it seems like he has gotten a big head. Songs should just be credited as "by Dimmu Borgir" not by a certain member.

I wouldn't really want people to know that I wrote most of In Sorte Diaboli if I did it anyway.

Considering how often Hollywood productions use parts of "Progenies of the Great Apocalypse" and other orchestral passages from Death Cult Aramageddon I'd be pretty pissed as well. Just like everyone else the guy has to make a living and if he doesn't get any money from the compositions I feel sorry for him.

That, and with Vortex leaving they're dead to me.

In an ideal world, yeh, it would just say "songs by the band," but the Music Bidness ain't an ideal world. In most bands, the writing is NOT equal. And how to credit songwriting is up to the band.

If this guy was so concerned about his writing credit, he should have stayed on top of the business end. Especially seeing as that "band" is known for fucking over any members who actually, ya know, wanna get properly compensated.

Corpse paint is who they are, Mustis by the way had the best design. It gave them a special identity. After all those years of dedication to Dimmu , to be fired by text message is a cowards way. I hope that you have alot of success with what is rightfully yours. You deserve to have the credit when you have done the work. We cant wait to hear the next chapter of your great inspiring music. Good luck Mustis and all HAIL SATAN.

He should just continue by himself with the Dimmu Borgir name. Until he win in court, then force the former Dimmu to change their name to BadSeed until Shagrath finally admit that he's gay and that he's leaving for the mountain with a puffy-coat brüno. This all sound like Déjà-vu in the Black Metal Universe...

Or maybe they should just sort this shit out with Swords and Inverted crosses.

I THINK FIRING THEM WAS A GOOD IDEA, I MEAN I AGREE THAT IT SHOULD BE ABOUT THE MUSIC THAT THE FANS CAN APPRECIATE AND NOT ABOUT STUFFING YOUR OWN POCKETS. PERSONNALY I THINK THE CHANGE WILL LET DIMMU MAKE BETTER MUSIC THAN BEFORE, SINCE THEY DONT HAVE TO DRAG THOSE LAZY ASSES AROUND ANYMORE THEY CAN PUT MORE EFFORT INTO MAKING AND CREATING BETTER MUSIC.
