METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH And ANTHRAX To Tour Together? - Sep. 3, 2009
SLAYER guitarist Kerry King has told U.K.'s Metal Hammer magazine that he has heard through the grapevine that METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich is plotting a tour that would include METALLICA, MEGADETH, SLAYER and ANTHRAX.

Should this tour materialize, this would be the first time that the so-called "Big Four" of thrash have toured together as part of the same bill. MEGADETH, SLAYER and ANTHRAX were joined by opening act ALICE IN CHAINS for the U.S. Clash Of The Titans tour in 1991, while METALLICA and MEGADETH last shared a U.K. stage at Milton Keynes Bowl in 1993.

In an interview conducted yesterday (Wednesday, September 2) in London, Metal Hammer asked Kerry if there had been a temptation to bring the co-headline tour that SLAYER are about to embark on with MEGADETH in Australia and Canada to U.K. shores.

"I think it would be cool but I knew we had this planned before all of this MEGADETH stuff started happening," said King. "They're going to Australia with us, they're going to Canada again with us. I think it would be cool for the European fans to bring that over here because, shit, we didn't even consider playing with those guys since 1990."

So could it be possible that we could get a tour that includes the "Big Four?"

"I've heard people referencing Lars," said King. "I don't know Lars that well and I haven't heard it from Lars, but apparently he's talking to somebody about it. Maybe us, METALLICA, MEGADETH (and), I think he even threw in ANTHRAX and I said in this day and age, I know we had that time together, but how do you leave out MACHINE HEAD? There's better options than ANTHRAX and that's nothing against ANTHRAX, but they've just been in pieces for quite some time and that doesn't make as much sense to me."

Better to have a reformed Suicidal Tendencies, Prong, or Exodus.

How does Machine head fit in better than Anthrax on the bill? They're just random when you throw em in with the other bands. Come on Kerry, it obviously makes sense to throw Anthrax in. But you already fucked this idea over because your last comment will probably piss off $cott Ian.

I knew this rumor wasn't even close to credible before I even opened it. Anthrax is currently without a singer and Dave Mustaine just had a bunch of press releases all with little shots at Metallica within.

Who knows, if Lars IS seriously thinking about this. Maybe he could actually convince Anthrax to get back Joey Belladonna. If they show up to a Big Four thrash tour with John Bush, I'd be really dissapointed.

Also, the lineup is really simple to figure out, and is why it just wont happen.

Anthrax
Megadeth
Slayer
Metallica

Dave would not only be second to Metallica, but I believe Slayer is much more popular nowadays too.

Why do those people need to be a part of it? All the bands will sound the same without them. Belladonna as the vocalist has a completely different style of vocals that are like the polar opposite of John Bush. HIS voice is associated with the big four, not Bush era. Seeing John Bush and the boys play Something gay like Safe Home at a Big Four tour would be retarded. Whereas it doesnt matter if any body you listed rejoins, since instrumentally all the musicians that have replaced them can play all the songs without any difference.

My point here is that if you closed your eyes you woulcnt be able to tell if Newsted, or Trujillo was playing. But you could DEFININTELY tell if John Bush or Joey Belladonna was singing.

No more MH please, they tour enough as it is, and it would ruin it not to have the big 4. Anthrax should be the opener, then Megadeth/Slayer have equal slot times, and they can alternate who goes on first, with Metallica to close as they are the biggest band out of the 4. There's no need for any other 80's thrash bands.

This tour would have been super awesome 20 years ago, seems like a novel idea today. I love Anthrax but agree with King, they are in shambles now. Metallica sucks live, Hetfields voice makes me cringe every time I hear him sing. As for Megadeth and Slayer nothing against their live show, but it hardly ever changes (esp Megadeth), I've seen both of these bands so many times in the last 20 years their sets are borderline boring now

I dont know where this thing as big four comes from. God knows I've been into thrash since early 80's, and as far as I know Megadeth came some time latter on, after Mustaine leaving Metallica.
Up untill then there was the big four: Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Exodus.
And I was always wondering why the hell everyone forgets the big legends - Overkill. There should be something called the big Five.

Put the tour with the big six:
Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Exodus, Overkill, Megadeth

Man... that would be the killer tour.

people want exodus as well, and i, in my opinion, think they are the sole godfathers of the thrash movement, but...no rick hunolt, and souza (baloff r.i.p.)...bottom line here my thrash brothers and sisters...what im trying to get at is...i would have rather seen the "big 4" in there prime, with there core members still there instead of seeing these newcomers trying to play the classics! i would still go see this tour, dont get me wrong! but it just wouldnt be the same!

Gotta say this would be a killer tour, but not w/Anthrax. It really needs to be Exodus on the bill. I've seen Anthrax w/Bush and they sound god awful, horrible. Seen 'thrax w/Joey and they rule w/Belladona. Those were the yrs from Spreading the Disease-Persistence of Time, for Anthrax. They have screwed w/Belladona by not recording w/him after the reunion and they need to pack it in now. Exodus on the other hand is actually the best band out of all these bands, in terms of songwriting. Since Tempo of the Damned Gary Holt has been a songwriting maniac who has made some of the best thrash albums as of late. Shovel Headed.. and Atrocity... are all freakin brutal and catchy. I have seen all these bands numerous times and next to Slayer Exodus are the best live act. I actually enjoy Exodus a little more, since I think the last 3 Exodus albums are better than all these other bands last 3 outputs. It is a shame that they are still overlooked and cannot get on a huge tour. I'm a n old school metal head, but love all the new brutal bands as well, but Exodus deserves alot more respect. The only reason Kerry mentions Machine Head is because he's friends w/Rob and the band. I also know it's about ticket sales and Machine Head sells a ton of records, not Exodus, but it does not make Exodus a lesser band. Exodus on this band would give everyone else a run for their money, because their music is heavy and they put on a great show.

on paper it sounds good. I like Metallica and all but because of them it would have to be at a larger arena and Metallica would play the majority of the time. Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer are best seen at smaller venues (5000 capacity).

Just my opinion. Also, what about Motorhead or Venom. Exodus or Testament makes the most sense though. Since Anthrax is still in limbo, they should get their original singer and just play off the Fistful of Metal album.

I can't believe how many Testament fans there are on here. Is that because compared to "the big four" their cd sales are absolute shit? Testament sucks. Sorry. Just because they've undersold "the big four" doesn't make them better. Alex Scolnick is a god on guitar but to be quite honest, I liked "Low" & "Demonic". "Practice What You Preach" and "Souls Of Black" are wastes of time. "The Legacy" was great and by the time they started covering Aerosmith on "The New Order", they were done. Testament doesn't belong on the same stage as any of the "big four". And all of you make fun of Kerry King's fatness? Holy shit man, Chuck Billy looks like he's either going to spontaneously combust or flat out have a heart attack and Alex Scolnick is way to technically advanced to be playing in a band like Testacle.

Now....Venom? Exodus? All of you are saying that it's not Anthrax unless it's Joey. I'm sorry. Have all of you not realized that Exodus and Venom HAVE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT LINEUPS NOW?!?!?!?!?!?!!?. I still dig Exodus and Venom. I was just making a point.

I'd love to see a tour that consisted of Destruction, Kreator, Exodus, Venom and oh. what the hell, Celtic Frost(again) but I think the Metallica guys are thinking of putting bands on the stage that actually sell records in America and beyond. This would be a great thing for the thrash metal community. And how about for a change, lars gets a slight pat on the back for attempting to be this ambitious? If every thrash band on earth toured together, Metallica still crushes them as far as attendance and cd sales goes. Metallica doesn't have to do a tour with anyone other than themselves. And I think Metallica's recent stuff is shit.

Lastly, 1 person.......1 fucking person mentioned Overkill. Ask any of "the big four" why they ended up playing thrash and they'll tell you that other than punk influences, it was because of Overkill's "Power In Black" demo. They sold some albums and have been together, playing thrash metal since 1980.

This tour would be huge. Come on thrash metal heads, embrace this. It's a once in a lifetime thing.

Screw metallica, you'd just get a bunch of poser-types + it would become too big considering metallica can sell out stadiums by themselves + mustaine/king/ian/hetfield/ulrich would just kick up so much shit and would fall through very soon. Althougg I would love it to happen especially to revitalise Anthrax as a serious thrashing band. They've always had better singers (IMO) and much more melodic giving a bit of variety to the bill. In terms of order it should be:

Anthrax
Megadeth
Metallica
Slayer (you cant top slayer live)

Having said that trade Metallica and Antrax for Kreator and Testament/Exodus and you've got the ultimate bill. Id much rather have original Sepultura than Machine Head.

Anthrax is a part of the big four! DEAL WITH IT! NOT TESTAMENT, NOT EXODUS, AND DEFINITELY NOT FUCKING MACHINE HEAD! The whole point of this tour would be to bring together the big four of thrash. And that would be amazing. I would sell my fucking life to see that show.

As for Anthrax's singer controversy, I'm sure all of their singers will jump at this opportunity if it comes into fruition, Anthrax will just be able to pick the one they want and go with it. Though for such a particular tour, I would reccomend Belladonna, since Bush wasnt there for the thrash days, and this is meant to be a thrash show.

Everyone saying this would be cool in the 80's but not now. NO! Its an even bigger deal now. Each day that goes by that this tour hasnt happened makes it a bigger deal. These bands werent world famous in the 80's but the 80's is what MADE them famous, if you have an intelligence level exceeding 2nd grade you will understand what I mean.

Lastly, I know all these bands have big egos. But I'm pretty sure its unviersally agreed Metallica would be headlining. The numbers dont lie, and not Dave, Tom, or $cott can change that.

Not to be nitpicky... but, back in 1990, Friedman and Menza were both noobies... I remember VIVIDLY... they took their share of shit too. what does everyone have against megadeths new line up, they kickass. the only people i would welcome back would be marty and chris. the rest are a waste of time, maybe junior. i don't care if the tickets cost 250 a pop, if that is what it is going to take to bring them together so be it.

This would never go ahead though.

The egos would get in the way. Who would be last on the bill? I can't see Dave, Kerry or Lars giving in on this one...

Not going to happen.

Yeah, because James sure does go on ego trips nowadays. Maybe from the black album up to St. Anger, yeah. But after rehab, I think he has really changed and is thankful for his success. Dave on the other hand....

It would be cool to see just how far each of these bands has fallen all in one night so you could really compare and contrast the depth of their selling out, being past their prime, etc.

That being said, I'm there. And Anthrax should definitely be involved. And it will never happen

Big 4 had

Metallica - Best Rhythm (Jaymz)
Megadeth - Best Leads (Poland, Friedman, sometimes Dave)
Slayer - Best Drummer (the only actual TALENT in the band)
Anthrax - Best Vocals (seriously, both Bush and Joey have amazing vocal range)

James, Dave, other Dave and Joey should start a supergroup

Exciter and/or Beehler
Diamond Head in England. That way us in the U.S can be deprived again.
And one day

yes

ONE DAY it will happen, but when?

Metallica will be joined with Mustaine - probably on stage - maybe at Ozzfest 2112. Could they ever record something together again?
Laugh if you will, but Lemmy and Fast Eddy reunited at Reading Fest 82. Plus Dio rejoined Iommi etc.

Would be a historic, memorable tour but i would replace Anthrax with Testament or, hell, with Cavalera (while they play an all-Sepultura set). Not because Anthrax is any less famous then them but because itd make for a better show ;).

Bassinyerface- They're playing the same god damn songs, They are playing THE SAME FUCKING THING! Sure one finger picks while Newsted plays with a pick. But you are playing the same song it doesnt make that much of a difference, esspecially when you're listening to Metallica and nobody really cares whose playing bass ever since Cliff anyway.

www.thenextslayer.com - You are correct. But you ultimately failed to state your point. And I'm still waiting.

Slayerbabe - "Thrash was a U.S. westcoast phenomenon that the media felt a need to add Anthrax to bring the eastcoast to the party." Are you high??? Thrash wasn't a phenomenon. It was an underground movement, and Anthrax was around during its infancy.

Anthrax IS part of the big four. Their status today changes NOTHING. For those of you idiots that dont know the first thing about thrash, I will now once again, LIST the big four of thrash

Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax. They were called the big four because their popularity was vastly superior to that of their peers. Exodus nor Testament were as popular as Anthrax, therefore, they are not members of the big four. Its that simple.

And really, Sepultura, in their prime, was almost as popular as Anthrax was in their prime. And Cavalera (w/Max and Igor), if they play an all or nearly all Sep. set, would basically be the same thing as Sepultura. In fact theyd be the real Sepultura, in my opinion! Due to who the members are.

The only way Anthrax would even deserve to be on that tour is if Joey and Danny came back...again. If they didn't I would LOVE to see Exodus, especially with Zetro back. Enough with the Testament yammerin. Exodus destroys Testament.

Now it is the hair club for men and remember when we use to play this.

The only ones that have really gotten better in the past few years is Megadeth and I would like to see Testament on there...Anthrax...who cares...maybe if Joey were back.....or maybe John could sing a song with Metallica and we could have seen what that train wreck would have sounded like.....uh if only it were 1990

It's sad that it would most likely turn out to be Clash of the Egos tour though.

I totally agree...how can you have this without Testament. I think the line-up is perfect, but just needs another band added in and that would be Testament!!!!! With Testament in there that is the most perfect line-up of old-school 80's thrash...what a killer show that would be if it goes through. Lets all somehow figure out some way to get Testament on the bill for that one.

I think that seeing the big four all in one show would be quite epic, actually. They were a big part of why I got into metal in the first place, although they are all pretty much sell outs by now. I would absolutely love to see them all together though. I think if it goes through it will be a big success. And I’ve have to agree, Machine Head does NOT deserve a place amongst these metal titans.
