SLAYER Frontman: MUSTAINE Talks A Lot Of Sh*t, Apologizes For It, Then Continues Talking Sh*t - Sep. 3, 2009
Mark Eglinton of The Quietus conducted an interview with SLAYER vocalist/bassist Tom Araya on Tuesday, September 1. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

The Quietus: Isn't it difficult being a responsible father while singing about some of that challenging subject matter?

Araya: No, my kids are fans of the band — they've seen the band live. Our album covers, they've seen all that and know all that, and, you know, they're two separate worlds. It's like you when you've got your daytime job and you do your work, then you go home and you're with the kids. It's no different for me. Even when I'm out on the road, they come with me; it's no different. They know that the minute I'm on stage I'm in SLAYER and I'm playing and singing. But I come off the stage and I'm Dad. They kind of have a grasp of what's going on or the extent of the popularity of the band but they know me as Dad and don't know me as anything else.

The Quietus: How did the tour with MEGADETH go? And was there any evidence of a rift between SLAYER and Dave Mustaine?

Araya: You know, I ran into him on two occasions, but when you see someone, and if you're a human being, you respect them and treat them as human beings — they're another living person. Other than that, the only thing we shared was that we did those four shows together. You know what I mean?! Nothing's really changed for me about him; I'm just waiting for him to open his mouth. [Laughs]

The Quietus: What is the burning issue between MEGADETH and SLAYER?

Araya: There isn't really a burning issue. The thing is he talks a lot of shit — then he apologizes for it, then he continues [talking shit]. Did you see [METALLICA's documentary] "Some Kind of Monster" [which features Mustaine in a scene with METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich and "performance enhancement coach" Phil Towle]? That should give you some kind of idea how he is!

The Quietus: In hindsight, would you have ever radically compromised your style for commercial gain? It must have been discussed?

Araya: We've never discussed it and it's something we'd never do. And we haven't. Let's put it this way: when we did "Divine Intervention", this was the last conference we ever had with a record label where they sat us down and sold us the idea of how they wanted to do "Divine", and how they were going to do this with the cover... and all these different ideas for the album. Then one guy looked at us and said, "But we need a hit song." And we said, "But you've got eleven songs, and if you can't find a hit in one of them than you're shit out of luck because that's what we're giving you." So we're like saying to them, "Right, you write the fucking hit song and we'll record it." That shut the guy up and that was the last time we had any kind of meetings like that! [Laughs]

The Quietus: So monetary success is not a driving force?

Araya: No, it's not really. Well, it would be nice to have monetary success, but we're not going to go out of our way to try to achieve that — we're going to be SLAYER and you're going to like us for what we do. We're going to make you buy a million records!
The Quietus: Is the controversy spotlight off SLAYER nowadays given some bands have taken things somewhat further and appear to mean it, too?

Araya: I don't really think about it and I don't really care. Even if we were getting the attention and now we're not, it doesn't really matter. If we've got protesters, I don't care. Someone says they don't like it, I don't care. No one has to like us and they're more than welcome to hate us.

The Quietus: How do you replace the huge adrenaline that SLAYER must give you when you're at home and away from the band?

Araya: Home's a sanctuary. Peace and quiet is what I want there. You know it doesn't take much to get the adrenaline going— we're in SLAYER! You start playing the music and you get a rush so there's no shortage of adrenaline. You recharge the batteries and I enjoy that kind of tranquility. I don't realize how much noise goes on around me until I get home and sit outside listening to the trees. Silence... just quiet.

Tom always comes across as a reasonable, down to earth, and intelligent guy. Dave usually comes across as a raging egomaniac with 'issues'.

And to rockstar 2832, if ever slayer had a 'hit single' it is probably 'raining blood'. it is a simple song with a catchy riff, a song to appeal to the kind of casual fan who only knows slayer from guitar hero. the fact that you list it as a highlight shows just how deep your appreciation of slayer is. personally i find the song hugely boring and wish they would never play it again, when they have so many better songs. furthermore change your user name you tosser.

All you school-age kids saying "Oh, Tom is talking shit". No he's not. He answering a question honestly with facts, rather than opinion (which is predominantly what Dave does added with emblelishments). It's a well-known fact that we all know about Dave. That's why Tom referenced the "Some Kind of Monster" scene where Dave was all whiney and sad and "Oh, Metallica please remember, forgive and love me" and then afterward he starts crying and bitching because of how weak (and truthfully) it portrayed him to the public. He had to sign off on them including that in the movie, and then later he tries to backpedal after the fact and tries to save face. Too late, Ginger. Love your music, but you're a Grade A douche.

Tom Araya, btw, is one of the most down-to-earth and true metal dudes around.

interesting how people chose sides based on their musical tastes. This isn't a Slayer sucks or Megadeth sucks arguement. The facts are Dave does talk shit , apologizes, then continues to talk shit...rinse lather repeat. Kerry on the other hand is as blunt as a hammer to the skull with his opinions and typically doesn't apologize for them and is typically reactionary in his comments. There's a big difference there...Dave w/ the media and a certain segment of the fanbase's help have been beating a dead horse for decades that combined with Dave's own self righteousness and subsequent commentary on "satanic bands" then the weird shit about Lars being fired roping in Scott Ian into the mix...makes you ask who's the fucking asshole in the room the majority of the time. As far as this particular faction of bands is concerned Mustaine is the fuckhead of the lot...he runs his mouth more than any of them combined and always comes off like a smug prick in love with the sound of his own voice...watch the interviews and you can see that smirk of his everytime as he talks more shit

Come on bro, "hugely boring"? "Raining Blood"? Maybe because they play it all the time but the song per se isn't boring at all imo. As you said, it's fast and catchy, and that doesn't make it boring at all, at least not to me, those are qualities not flaws. But yeah, I love it when they play "Seasons" (WITH the opening arpeggios, I hate it when they cut that part) "South" and their longest, more atmospheric more "progressive" (so to speak, I hate that word) songs. Doesn't mean I don't like the fast raging ones though, they're a fundamental part of Slayer's approach to music, wouldn't you say?

The way I read his interview, Araya's just adding to the fire. An earlier poster said that Araya was just answering a question with facts, bullshit! It's a dig on Dave. It's antagonistic. And he's just as guilty as everyone else involved.

If someone like Tom Araya really wanted to be the "down to earth" guy everyone claims he is, he would've said something like, "Hey, it was a great tour with Megadeth. I'm looking forward to upcoming dates and it's good to be playing together again." Period. Keep it about the music. Avoid questions that get personal and, for the love of God, don't reference a movie clip to sum up Dave Mustaine as a person. That's beyond insulting.

I don't have any more or less respect for Araya based on this interview. But down to earth and humble do NOT accurately describe his insult-laced responses.

Slayer kills live. Megadeth and Metallica should go out in the audience and see them play to re-learn how to do it. Metallica and Megadeth lost it. Slayer has always stayed true to themselves and always bring it live.

Tom Araya is the fuckin' man. Too bad his guitar player sucks so bad and is such an asshole.

Mustaine is an asshole too, but he's a genius.

Nuff said. Mustaine's a great musician but cares mostly about himself and his big ego. Much respect to Tom or Kerry King for actually being "down to earth" and straight-up individuals...which is the way to go if you wanna be respected as a human being...period.

Well, I have just listened ENDGAME album...

and...

It really sucks I mean... there´s no songs on it... it´s a fucking non stoppable riffing - soloing - grudging :S and sorry... I don´t want to start the typical shit... but that sucks... Mustaine Obviously since The world needs a Hero hasn´t written a proper SONG... and that´s shit... Megadeth should call it quits...

Slayer and Megadeth don´t share quite the same style... but I find Slayer more cohesive structurewise and lirycally speaking for THEIR music they write good stuff... Dave should retire guys... a lot of bashing 827398273 people, bashing metallica, bashing slayer, bashing the coffee, bashing the thrashing (?) and he comes out with a lame record? c´mon...

I will say it, Death Magnetic KICKS THIS SHITTY ALBUM´S ASS by far.

I mean you listen some tracks and you see this guy can´t make a progression of tempos when creating a song, he just makes a mute or stops playing to go faster instead of making something progressive :S

This guy should AT LEAST listen to Master of Puppets to learn some stuff about Thrash, I get that a lot of you enjoy heavy speed riffing but when the riff it´s all by itself and no song in there... it´s just that... a riff. Even St Anger was more cohesive although it was full of fucking filler and terrible sound :S

I'm not sure that comparing Slayer's and Megadeth's music is the point here, and doing so won't ever reach a conclusion that everyone agrees with. Having heard both albums; Megadeth's is an improvement on recent records without being stunning, and Slayer's has, like most of their post R.I.B material, three or four very good songs and several ordinary ones. The bands aren't comparable either really, apart from being part of the 'Big 4' .Oh, and don't start the Big 4 debate saying who should and shouldn't be in it...we're 30 years too late for that...

that the only band in the Big 4 that aren't talking trash, and haven't for quite a while is Metallica?

Seems kind of strange to say, but the guys in Metallica seem to be the only ones that have grown up and have any class!

The rest of the bunch are behaving like guys in their mid to late forties going through their 2nd childhood!

Totally agreed. Mustaine can never decide whether he wants to be an elder statesman of metal or an immature 12 year old kid. I bet my bottom dollar if the Big 4 Tour does come about, Mustaine is gonna do an about-face and do some serious sucking up to Metallica and Slayer.

I don't care if you are a good player (Mustaine), if you are still a dick then shit like this will always go down.
