MASTODON Confirms 'Jonah Hex' Involvement
- Sep. 5, 2009
|
|
Atlanta progressive metallers MASTODON have confirmed that they are working with composer John Powell and director Jimmy Hayward on the score to "Jonah Hex", the comic-book Western/horror film starring Josh Brolin in the lead role, with support from John Malkovich, Megan Fox, Will Arnett, Michael Fassbender and Michael Shannon. The movie is based on the DC comic series about a horribly scarred antihero who is "a rough-and-tumble gunslinger and part-time bounty hunter whose adventures always ended in blood." MASTODON guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds makes a cameo appearance in the film, which is being directed by former Pixar animator Jimmy Hayward for a June 18, 2010 release. In a May 2009 interview with Billboard.com, MASTODON drummer Brann Dailor revealed that a film adaptation of the band's latest album, "Crack the Skye", is well within the realm of possibility — albeit not in production yet. Dailor told Billboard.com that the quartet sat down with a film director, whom he declined to name, and "wrote out a screenplay that reads from song to song. We didn't storyboard it, but we wrote a screenplay." Three different directors, he added, have expressed interest in taking on the project. "That'd be killer if it actually happens," Dailor said. "That's something that's cool about making concept records, that opportunity for more to be done, artistically. If you just had an album with a bunch of songs that didn't have anything to do with each other and there was no common thread, that aspect of the art wouldn't be there. But with ( 'Crack the Skye'), we have that possibility." "Crack the Skye"'s seven songs, produced by Brendan O'Brien, weave together a conceptual story involving a quadriplegic, astral travel, Stephen Hawking's theories on wormholes and the philosophies of Russian mystic Grigori Rasputin. "I think it's definitely the closest we've come to a fully cohesive story from start to finish," Dailor said.

I still can't believe they're making a jonah hex movie. He's such an obscure character, to make a movie about him before flash or green arrow, it's weird. They must think they can get a franchise out of it. I'll see this opening night.

I agree with you to an extent because Leviathan is also my favorite, but I think "down hill" is a relative term when they're making albums that blow away 99% of the bands in modern music.

...needs to go the fuck away. I'm so sick of seeing her strut and be blatantly and tritely hot for all the boys to jerk off to. It's so cookie cutter that it makes me sick. Kate Winslet showed more skin than Fox, but is still somehow much more classy than her. It's called integrity.

wonder if someone is jealous??? When you look as good as Ms. Fox, you can blatantly and tritely strut and make people forget what the actual thread is about... oh yeah, Jonah Hex... yes, a strange choice for a movie, then again Marvel hit it big with Ghost Rider. Hope it's better than The Watchmen, I was all gung ho for that one and it was a downer. Visuals were great, but it was slow and strung out.

Mastodon rules, the movie has some potential to be awesome, Josh Brolin kicks ass, Megan Fox is hot, but when it comes to acting she makes lindsay lohan look like fucking Meyrl Streep.
my worthless opinion in a nut shell.

You do realize that a movie that is essentially a western is going to go over a lot easier with the general public than a superhero movie featuring DC's cheesier characters like the Flash, Green Lantern and such (although they are moving forward on GL with Ryan Reynolds). There's a reason a street level, more realistic character like Batman is an easier sell. So no surprise that the Flash, no matter how popular with us comic geeks, isn't getting easily greenlit.

Still, for them, they've been moving down hill since Leviathan. I agree that they're "better" than most bands that are 10 years old and younger. But that's also relative because about 99% of those bands suck pretty hard. The point though is that Mastodon peaked two albums ago. I liked Leviathan, but I've lost all interest in them at this point. BTW, I saw them live with Neurosis and thought Neurosis made them look downright silly, as well as derivative.

Just because they "oh my god" progessed into a more mature band with less screaming and more structure they still haven't gone downhill at all... if anything they are at the top of the hill and have stayed there. I suppose you wish they had made "Leviathan" over and over again instead of following the natural progression they have always been on? Bands change it is a simple fact they are still at the top of their game and are playing music from their hearts which most bands do not do anymore.
Conquer-all = complete idiot who doesn't have a clue about Mastodon or their fans... Yeah I know a lot of those people you are describing who like Mastodon... NOT! Those guys don't even know who the fuck Mastodon is. To say they are not "metal" means you have no real fucking clue what metal even is so why don't you do us all a favor and get off the board idiot.

Since you assumed so much about my post, let me spell out a few points. I believe that Leviathan is better than its successors because Leviathan is more creative, vibrant and memorable. I do not, however, wish that Mastodon recorded Leviathan more than once. Of course, bands change. But I challenge your rhetoric that they've matured, progressed and remained at the "top." Bands themselves love to lean on such rhetoric whenever it serves them. Of course, they're not going to admit that Leviathan was their peak. That would be a bad business move. Again, all bands (that become popular) minimize their most creative work for the sake of promoting subsequent records. They sort of have to if they want to "succeed" commercially and financially. Leviathan was their peak.

You make a lot of good points, but i honestly believe it's a matter of opinion when and if Mastodon peaked. I personally find myself listening to Remission and Crack the Skye more than Leviathan, but i thoroughly enjoy all of Mastodon's work and i'm sure i'll buy their next album.

to Leviathan much it pales in comparison to Crack the Skye. Open the ears and be willing to change. Musicians do this. Its great that they have an opportunity to make some money and if there are hot babes in the movie all the better. Who gives a damn if Megan Fox can act as long as her a.. looks good on a wide screen.

you wouldn't have had a CLUE about that from actually reading the god-awful lyrics. Mastodon were better off stealing bits of Herman Melville and using those, that was cool as hell. and the new album was utterly incohesive and pretty junky. Leviathan was fantastic though and I keep going back to it.

No when you start trying to claim something as fact and it is pure opinion that is when I make the comments I did. You assume Mastodon peaked with "Leviathan" but I DISAGREE and so do others. The world is not based on your opinion and neither is the career of Mastodon. I may have mistook you for some bitter old fan who is pissed off they don't scream and play 100 miles an hour as often anymore but I was calling it like I read it. As a fan of the band since "Remission" came out and getting into them on the Contamination tour forever ago I can say I feel they haven't peaked and keep creating amazing and bround breaking metal albums period. Oh and for the record... you can go fuck yourself.

Also your feeble and pathetic attempt to summarize bands and the music industry makes me realize I was talking with a moron here all along. Yeah man Mastodon is SOOO commercial they are just selling millions of albums and on the radio every second. You have got the be fucking kidding me with your statements there is nothing commercial about any of their albums and they still create progressive music. You think you are so smart and you know it all but instead you sound like a complete and utter idiot. Congradulations on that!

it also seems no one on the board has a fucking clue what progressive rock/metal is... I can't believe someone just said "Crack The Skye" sounded like a pop album. What the hell is the world coming to. I understand if you don't like the album but saying it is pop is fucking retarded. It IS a metal album people. I know you young people have the idea that metal is nothing but screaming, blast beats, and 200 mile an hour songs but there was a time when METAL was not this way... There are still bands out there that are not this way and they are still 100% metal. Mastodon is metal... period. I swear as the years go by on here people are getting dumber and dumber.

crack the skye is a simply unbelievable album. period. i don't even think you can compare it to leviathan or blood mountain b/c it is a COMPLETELY different album. it still so metal in so many ways but its an evolution, a testament to how much they can stretch themselves and break boundaries as a band. i hate this idea that metal is black and white. i love bands like mastodon, baroness, rosetta, isis, pelican, russian circles, red sparrowes, and, as the guy who is saying mastodon peaked should recognize after saying he likes this band so much, the mighty neurosis. to say neurosis peaked with through silver in blood is an isult to the band, its growth, and its evolution, just as to say mastodon peaked with leviathan does the same thing. all the power to creativity and breaking of boundaries. my 2 cents. but what noone has talked about, surprising since its the subject of this article, mastodon scoring a movie? they sounds beyond amazing. i can't fucking wait.

Crack The Skye sounds like bad Queensryche. I would prefer to hear Operation: Mindcrime if I'm going to listen to this type of shit.
Going to see these guys in November just to see High On Fire open, but I'm going to give them a beer's worth of my time to see if they can win me over.
