Original ANGEL Bassist MICKIE JONES Loses Battle With Cancer
- Sep. 6, 2009
|
|
Mickie Jones, original bassist and founding member of the '70s rock band ANGEL, passed away yesterday (Saturday, September 5) in San Dimas, California after a long battle with liver cancer. His family said he died "peacefully and beautifully." Mickie performed on four ANGEL albums — "Angel" (1975), "Helluva Band" (1976), "On Earth As It Is In Heaven" (1977) and "An Anthology" (1992; compilation). He toured extensively with ANGEL in the United States for several years and took part in the band's infamous Japanese tour. Before ANGEL, he played in the rock group BUX, which included guitarist Punky Meadows ( ANGEL) and singer Ralph Morman ( JOE PERRY PROJECT, SAVOY BROWN). BUX released one album on Capitol Records, "We Come To Play", in 1976. Both Jones and Meadows were asked to join the NEW YORK DOLLS but declined. After leaving ANGEL, Jones formed the L.A. band EMPIRE (which also included L.A. GUNS drummer Steve Riley), in which he handled lead vocals. Over the years, Mickie became interested in film production and later worked in the film industry. Condolences may be sent to mickiejonesrip@aol.com. Services have not been made at this time. That must take out a lot of rock musicians long before their average lifespan. This guy must have been in his 50s. No health insurance for them, so they can't afford treatment. Sucks, but that's what they sign up for when they choose this lifestyle.
That guy does look the same in the pictures, but thirty years apart and he dies two years later? I think someone needs to check the real date of that first picture.
Second picture -- platform boots. Okay, I don't know Angel except by name, must have been a glam band, a change our sound to fit in with the current scene and once the scene changes we're done band. You know, like '80's hair bands, '90's grunge bands, '00's nu metal. Kinda sad, but I guess they had a couple good years. More than most of you basement dwellers can say, eh?

I was just reading through the post and the shot of Mickie with the platforms was the 70's and the first shot was more recent and had been posted elsewhere the past few years...... myspace and a few other places.
I was reading this comment above "That must take out a lot of rock musicians long before their average lifespan. This guy must have been in his 50s. No health insurance for them, so they can't afford treatment. Sucks, but that's what they sign up for when they choose this lifestyle."
People with great job's that have spent great deals of $$$ on health insurance still die as well....no amount of money is going to save them in certain cases.. and from sources closer to Mickie, Mickie has been in treatment & care for the past year..... and fighting to get better but preferred to keep the info low key although most of the hardcore fans knew.....
Not sure if you would call Angel a Glam band.....more rock---rock/pop.....and sure like many bands back then managagement and others had them headed in different musical directions and looking for a pop radio hit perhaps.
I enjoyed the heavier stuff more, I never got to see their full stage show and effects such as their holograms since they were the opening band and most headliners would not allow the effects and some went as far as to say no guitar or drum solo's as Punky Meadows meantioned to me on one tour....
Anyways rest in peace Mickie...........

Angel was one of those underrated but great bands that just A. Came out at the wrong time, and B. By happenstance, just didn't get the push they needed, their first two albums are incredible (including the 'Angel' design and logo).
Had they maybe come out in 1980ish rather than 1975, they might have done better especially with the upcoming MTV. Their legendary keyboardist found lukewarm success with Giuffria and later House of Lords
The first s/t album I recommend to anybody....
RIP man...

I saw Angel on the "On Earth" tour, and it was awesome. It started with the original logo (with the face in it) descending from the ceiling, and it had a hologram of the face --talking! As I recall, almost everybody attending that show was heavily "medicated" and just about fell out of their seats. Then, for their second magic trick, all the members of Angel appeared out of nowhere on stage. The rest of the show was great too--lot's of lights and smoke. Their sound was much harder live, and they rocked. I'd like to have a concert video from that tour.

Angel appeared in the 1980 Jodie Foster movie "Foxes" (although that was after Mickie Jones' departure from the band).
Like KISS, Angel were signed to Casablanca Records. It was a very similar approach (stage show, platform boots, etc.) but while KISS wore black, the members of Angel were dressed in white..
I actually worked with Mickie's replacement, Felix Robinson, for several years in the 1990s at an A/V company in New York..
Anyway, R.I.P. Mickie.

Underated band. Great bassist. First three are great. Hellava band is my favorite. (It's wierd, i got drunk the other night and blasted the CD. ) They started to get a little too "poppy" for me after "on earth"... probably the record companys idea, but like i said, the first three are great and some bands don't even have that.

this sucks! i'd seen angel in '79, but mickey had left the band 2 years earlier. they were great, but they were opening for ted nugent at the time,so they didn't play long. i preferred the 1st 3 records they made with mickey, compared to the ones they made afterwards. i did meet angel at a club 5 years ago and had asked one of the original members about mickey, but he hadn't seen him in a long time. i didn't even know he was that sick. that really sucks as i'd have liked to have seen an original angel reunion. from what i'd asked of frank domino, he said none of the other original guys wanted to go on the road.

ANGEL is a well missed band. This is so sad to hear about Mickey. I had no idea he was fighting cancer. He had the look of a total rocker and fit right in with the band. I got to see ANGEL in concert and it was probably the hottest show EVER! I've been to many rock shows but boy were ANGEL just incredible!
PS- The remark by the guy BTK Experience (tshawn7377@yahoo.com) was totally uncalled for!

I WOULD LIKE TO EXPRESS MY SADNESS OVER THE DEATH OF MICKY JONES, MICKY JONES WAS LIVING WITH ME FOR A BREIF PERIOD OF TIME. I HAVE JUST DISCOVERED ON THIS SITE THE NEWS OF WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO MICKY. I WANT THE FANS OF MICKY JONES TO KNOW WHAT MICKY BATTLED, WAS EXTREMELY HARD ON HIM, HE HAD GREAT IDEAS, AND WAS ALWAYS WITH A POSITIVE ATTITUDE. HE DID NOT FEAR DEATH, HE FEARED THE PROLONGED SUFFERING OF IT. I PERSONALLY GOT TO KNOW MICKY. AND HE WAS A CHARACTER. HE ALSO HAD BEEN TO THE TOP, WITH JETS, AND HOMES, FANCY CARS. THE ROCK STAR LIFE. HE ALSO MADE IT CLEAR TO ME WHAT CAN HAPPEN TO A ROCK STAR WHO IS SITTING ON TOP OF THE WORLD. HOW QUICKLY IT CAN BE GONE. ALL THE MONEY, ALL THE GLORY, EXCEPT WHAT REMAINS. MICKY MADE HIS MARK WITH ANGEL. I WANT HIS FANS OUT THERE TO KNOW HOW MUCH THEY MEANT TO HIM. HE WAS PROUD TO KNOW THAT THEY REMEMBERED HIM. I DEALT WITH MICKYS SICKNESS. I WATCHED AS HE SUFFERED. AND I TRYED TO HELP HIM, KEEP HIM OFF ALCHOHOL, I DID SOMEWHAT A GOOD JOB OF IT WHILE HE WAS HERE WITH ME. I HAVE LEARNED ALOT OF LESSONS FROM THIS. WHEN YOU ARE UP THERE, AND THEN YOU HAVE LOST IT ALL! HE KEPT A LOW PROFILE, BECAUSE HE DIDN'T WANT HIS FANS OR HIS RELATIONSHIPS HE HAD MADE IN THE INDUSTRY KNOW ABOUT HIS CONDICTION. HE MADE LIKE NOTHING WAS WRONG. HE HAD A GOOD FRIEND HERE, AND I AM SADDENED THAT THIS HAD TO TURN OUT LIKE THIS, I HOPE THAT EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU , WHO ASPIRE TO BE AT THE TOP WILL LEARN A LESSON FROM THIS TOO! REMEMBER MICKY JONES.

My name Wilson Alexandre.
I'm a brazilian rock Dj since 1971 and I was the first man to play a Angel album for brazilian rock fans in my country in 70's.
Today, the brazilian rockers fans know the Angel music because me and my friends Djs team showed the Angel musical works for them.
I can say that Angel is one of the best bands of Rock.
And Mickey Jones was the great bass man of the world of course!
I remember that when I bought the Helluva album everybody ask me "Who´s that guys" - "This rock sound is so beautiful".
Everybody was delighted for the Angel Music in my country.
The Fortune is the angel's music most important for the brazilian fans.
This angel track was the music that me and my team played on and on several years in my Rock Club.
What I mean, The Angel is the great rock band, all angel members are great musicans too.
Punk Meadows is still one of the best guitarrists I have listened. Frank Dimino is the most beautiful voices of rock Barry Brandt is the best drummer of the world too. Greg Giuffria is the complete keyboard man, he know everything about music. Felix Robinson replaced magnificent the Mickey's place.
The Mickey's death is a great and sad losses for us.
In fact we brazilian fans still had hopes to see the Angel together again, but it is a dream away.
Rest in peace Mickey everywhere you are!
Now you are an angel of course!
Missing you!
