New OZZY OSBOURNE Guitarist GUS G.: It's An 'Honor' To Step Into ZAKK WYLDE's Shoes - Sep. 8, 2009
This month's issue of the Greek edition of Metal Hammer magazine features an exclusive interview with FIREWIND guitarist Gus G. about his current stint as the lead axeman in OZZY OSBOURNE's solo band. Gus explains how he came to be considered for the position, discusses his first audition with the Prince Of Darkness and expresses his admiration for Zakk Wylde, whom he replaced in Ozzy's group. Read on for some of Gus G.'s quotes from the interview. (Original Greek-language quotes translated for BLABBERMOUTH.NET by Hakos Pervanidis.)

On how the whole thing came about:

Gus: "I got a message on my MySpace page from Rob 'Blasko', Ozzy's bass player, asking me what was doing, if was living in America or not and saying that he wanted to talk to me. I never thought he'd want me for something like that [playing with Ozzy]. I initially thought that maybe he wanted to talk to me about doing a project or something and then he told me that one of Ozzfest's managers was looking for me. The manager said that they wanted me to fly out to Los Angeles immediately for a show that Ozzy was about to do in Anaheim, California."

On his first audition in Los Angeles:

Gus: "I went to the studio and they asked me to start playing right away. I met Ozzy's band first — the bass player and the drummer — and we jammed for quite some time, just to 'feel' each other's playing. While we were playing, Ozzy showed up and started to sing the songs, thus giving a huge boost to the whole thing. When it ended, everybody else came into the room and shut the door behind them — Ozzy, Sharon [Osbourne, Ozzy's wife/manager], the band, the managers… You can imagine how anxious I was feeling at this time! Then they came out and said that I got the job and that we're gonna play that BlizzCon show together."

His thoughts on Zakk Wylde:

Gus: "Zakk is a tremendous guitar player, just like all the guys that have played with Ozzy. In fact, Zakk is my favorite Ozzy guitar player ever and my biggest influence of them all! It's quite an honor for me to step into his shoes."

On the treatment he's going to give to all the Ozzy classics:

Gus: "Ozzy has had all those great guitar players in his band over the years and each one of them had a different approach to playing the songs, whether it was Tony Iommi, Randy Rhoads, Jake E. Lee or Zakk Wylde. I studied all those approaches quite thoroughly. You have to respect those songs and play them the way people want to hear them. Should I turn 'Crazy Train' into a power metal song? No way, man!"

On the future of FIREWIND, Gus G.'s own band:

Gus: "People shouldn't worry about the future of FIREWIND at all. We'll enter the studio in the autumn and we'll hopefully release a new album early next year. My co-operation with Ozzy doesn't take anything away from FIREWIND; on the contrary, it will gives it a whole new boost."

Read the full interview in this month's issue of the Greek Metal Hammer magazine and find out the reason Gus G. thinks he was chosen to play with Osbourne, his feelings about Ozzy as a person, his impression of the BlizzCon show, his opinion about the other guitar players Ozzy has played with over the years and the material for Ozzy's upcoming studio album.

To order a copy of the magazine, write to cyclo@hammer.gr.

Ozzy issued a statement on August 21 confirming reports that longtime Osbourne musicians Wylde and Mike Bordin (drums) would not be joining him for the BlizzCon performance due to their current touring commitments with BLACK LABEL SOCIETY and FAITH NO MORE, respectively.

In addition to his current axe-slinging duties with FIREWIND, Gus (real name: Kostas Karamitroudis) has played in MYSTIC PROPHECY, NIGHTRAGE, ARCH ENEMY and DREAM EVIL.

Gus is already mentioning how great it is to join the ranks of other well known Ozzy guitarists. The problem is that they all sounded a little different from each other, recorded well known tunes with Ozzy and spent years with him as well. Don't draw comparisons after one gig!

Though Firewind are reasonable at best, Gus G is an incredible guitar player. Live he is even better than on CD. The guy has so much feel and has a lot of depth to his playing.

You are not stepping into Zakk Wylde's shoes. He took them with him back to BLS land. You must prove your own path. Good luck with that--Sharon's in charge now. Zakk's shoes would just give you the clots anyway. Get well Zakk you crazy fuck. Resume with the shredding ASAP.

Enough already from ZW. He'd better go with his BLS, liftting weights and still getting swollen all over the place trying to be the viking he dreams of, although I wish him well with his clot problem (nothing to do with his "Thor-like" attitude and musicianship).
The new guy shouldn't be thinking in filling somebody's shoes. You, Gus, must think in playing the old songs with the respect they deserve, that's it, and for the new ones you got to express yourself musically as ong you're allowed to do that (remembering you're playing for Ozzy Osbourne, not your band or anything). If you feel comfortable playing the songs as ZW that's your choice, also you could think in giving them your touch, and for me R. Roads was a way better guitarrist that ZW (he is very good, but not a prodigy). Just my opinion.

I won't hate on Gus. Can't blame him for taking a gig and making a paycheck. Besides, it isn't like Ozzy will be changing the setlist on him.

He'll play the same old songs Ozzy has been doing for years, and get a nice chunk of change doing it. Sort of like being in an Ozzy cover band, but making good money doing it.

Personally, I won't ever see them live. I'd rather keep my memories of the great Ozzy tours of the past unblemished.

Zakk is a kick ass guitarist but the vibrato thing he does on every other note gets on my nerves. The new guy seems to do it alot too but not nearly as much. Maybe Ozzy is coaching these guys or something. Or it could be the GUS G is trying to not fuck with the sound of Ozzy's band too much.

pinch harmonics are ok if they are done properly, not every two notes like Zakk.

Zakk is so overrated, I mean, he's so messy live. Gus G. is way cleaner. He probably is giving Zakk his respect here, but honestly Gus seems to be more influenced by Rhoads. His playing is very classy, just like Randy's.

I hope Zakk's doing well though.

kingnothing 23. Zakk has been greatly way overrated. Why does no one mention Jake E. Lee. Now that guy can bury both of these guitarists. But.. he will not come out of 'retirement' or what the hell ever he calls it to play. C'mon Jake!!!! As for Gus, it will be a refreshing change to hear him play with OZZ. I have never liked Zakk as a guitarist, personally, but that is my opinion. He does the same solo over and over since 1988, and he even does that with BLS. Saw them live one time, never again. It was like watching one big goddamn guitar solo for the whole show!!

Getting a new guitar player has nothing to do with live performances and everything to do with trying to make a better studio album. It's a gamble for sure, but everyone knows Ozzy's management didn't appreciate Zakk's ability to contribute to the recent studio albums.

Dio-Sabbath sure sounded great in Boston last week - and the new material is VERY strong. I will be happy if the new Ozzy album is even half as good as The Devil You Know.

This guitar job was offered to John 5, Jake E. Lee (again), and George Lynch. All of whom passed. Know why? The money wasn't enough to deal with Sharon and fact that Ozzy is now over the hill. He did kick some serious ass in the 70's, 80's, and early 90's though, so kudos for that Ozzy. Retirement is at hand though. Please go out gracefully.

and i saw Ozzy live 3 years ago and he was great and much better then Metallica was the same year and at least Ozzy has done some good albums in the last 20 years unlike Metallica.
But of course its an honor for him to replace Zakk just as it would be for anyone else who was joining Ozzy. and of course Ozzy isnt great everynight, he's fucking 60, but still he's better then many of new bands around and much better singer then the guys that are to small on the inside to actually sing.

I love Zakk and am grateful to him since he's the main dude that got me back into heavier music after a layoff in the late 90's. I also got to meet him once at Ozzfest and you couldn't ask for a cooler guy. That being said though, his stuff is getting repetitive and I agree with a poster above, pinch harmonics are okay when not done to death as Zakk seems to prefer.

I always thought John Christ of Danzig used pinch harmonics well...only when they fit.

You guys REALLY think that was all Gus's choice.... You think he showed up and said 'I'm wanna look, act and sound just like Zakk'?

Honestly, the music business is way more complicated than a lot of you think... Every concert detail is scrutinized from the word go..including wardrobe. They (management) wanted Gus to look and act the part. That's part of what he's getting paid to do.

Zakk has been with Ozzy since the 80's folks, so like it or not he was a large part of Ozzy's career. Shame Ozzy didnt think of that when he screwed yet another friend over. Soon he will be suing Zakk like he does to all those he has worked with.

Let's give Zakk a little bit of credit here. During the shitty 90's, himself, Dime, and John Petrucci were shredding like motherfuckers keeping the scene alive. The guy is just boozed senseless and isn't half the player he was (see Michael Shenker).
His style has become stale I must admit, but he was loyal to Ozzy when Ozz called him in to finish 3 albums. Ozzy and Steve Vai couldn't write together for Ozzmosis, Ozzy and Holmes for Down To Earth, and when Ozzy failed to get John 5 for Black Rain. He tried to get away several times to do his own thing (Guns N Roses, Pride and Glory, BLS) but Ozzy kept calling him in to save his ass. Now Ozzy complains he sounds like Zakk's bands? What a douche bag. Zakk stepped up and answered the call despite recording his own material (7 or 8 discs plus Ozzy's 3 studio and Live At Budokan.

Give the guy a fucking break. He did a lot for metal and guitar soloing when it wasn't supposedly fucking cool anymore. The first 3 BLS albums were fucking sick but he is clearly burned out.

I came to this post way too late... but after reading so much idiotic blabbering I just had to comment. First of all, I am a big Firewind fan... even before I knew anything about Gus joining with Ozzy. And... as an experienced guitar player of 18 plus years let me just set the record straight as far as Gus G's skill level. The fact is that Gus can do things on the guitar that Zack could only dream about, and that goes for all of Ozzy's other players too. Don't get me wrong, all those guys are and were very good. But Gus G. is one of THE MOST amazing metal guitarists I have ever heard... and that is saying something. If you don't play guitar and don't know what the hell you're talking about then don't presume to give an opinion on who is the "best." The reason Ozzy and company chose Gus is precisely because he can play WHATEVER the hell he wants to on guitar, and... he does have a style all his own... and, knows how to play with feeling. That's why he has played in so many bands. And the fact is that metal music is still not the mainstream, and Gus and his bandmates in Firewind are out there plugging away, hitting the road and paying thier dues amid a market that is very hard to survive in as a metal band. They are the real deal and I admire their tenacity. To criticize them for not selling as many albums as Ozzy is simply ridiculous... as the market is TOTALLY different from what it was in the 80's when Ozzy made a name for himself. The fact is that Firewind's music is better than anything Ozzy has done in the past 20 years... and personally I prefer their music to anything Ozzy has EVER done. Anyway, just had to set the record straight for all you morons out there... can't believe how many of you their are...
