ANTHRAX Guitarist Is 'Excited' About Rumored Tour With METALLICA, SLAYER And MEGADETH
- Sep. 8, 2009
|
|
MetalMachine.net conducted an interview with ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian this past weekend. The chat, which focuses primarily on Ian's upcoming two-issue Lobo comic for DC, Lobo: Highway To Hell, that is being drawn by artist Sam Kieth for release this November, can be viewed at this location. Regarding ANTHRAX's current status, Ian said, "We're playing the Loud Park festival in Tokyo [Japan] on October 17 with John Bush singing, and that's what's going on with ANTHRAX right now. There's really nothing else to say. John [who sang for ANTHRAX from 1992 until 2005] came back and did the Sonisphere show in England, and there was like 60 or 70 thousand people there losing their minds. [It was] our first time back on stage together in four years, and I would have to say, probably the best show I've ever played in the history of this band. There was so much emotion and so much energy and such an unbelievable wave of positive feeling from that audience at that show. Everything clicked, it was completely seamless, and it was like we had played with him the day before. It was just so amazing to have my partner back. And now John is committed to doing the show in Tokyo on October 17. And we're just taking things as they come at this point. I look at it this way: If it means that eventually we're back and this is the lineup again — from 'We've Come For You All' — then I'm a very happy person." Ian also commented on the rumor that stemmed from a recent interview SLAYER guitarist Kerry King gave to U.K.'s Metal Hammer magazine in which King stated has heard through the grapevine that METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich is plotting a tour that would include METALLICA, MEGADETH, SLAYER and ANTHRAX. Scott said, "There's this big rumor that we're gonna do METALLICA, ANTHRAX, SLAYER and MEGADETH next summer in Europe, and this is supposedly coming from the METALLICA camp. So whether it's true or not, I'm really excited about it, and I'll say right now that we will absolutely do it. So we're in. [laughs]" Professionally filmed video footage of ANTHRAX performing the song "Safe Home" with John Bush at U.K.'s Sonisphere festival on August 1, 2009 can be viewed below. ANTHRAX parted ways with singer Dan Nelson in July due to what has been described as "personal differences." As a result, the band canceled 10 European shows and pulled out of a U.S. tour with SLIPKNOT which was scheduled to take place in August and September. ANTHRAX's manager, Izvor Zivkovic of Split Media, told BLABBERMOUTH.NET on July 21 that the band's new album, "Worship Music", which was previously due in Europe on October 23 via Nuclear Blast Records, will now be "pushed back to a later date." According to Ian, Dan Nelson's tracks will most likely be erased from the CD, which was recently mixed at a New Orleans studio by Dave Fortman (a former member of UGLY KID JOE who has also worked with artists such as MUDVAYNE, EVANESCENCE). Scott Ian talking to MetalMachine.net about what's next for ANTHRAX: ANTHRAX at U.K.'s Sonisphere:

Seems as though Kerry doesn't even want him on the tour. I also love how he said:
"There's this big rumor that we're gonna do METALLICA, ANTHRAX, SLAYER and MEGADETH next summer in Europe"
I think he means Metallica, Megadeth/Slayer and Anthrax.

as much as I would like to see this happen, it won't. 3/4 of these bands are too big to play with each other. you think they will be nice and rotate headlining positions? haha Mustaine and King constantly talk shit, about each other or the band bigger then all 3 of these bands put together. you think all of a sudden they will play nice with each other? no matter how much money is involved. Metallica is the only band that has grown up and shows respect where it is due, good luck to the other pricks.

i must agree with you on that one. IF it actually happens i think Kerry queens gonna have to shut the fuck up and swallow some pride especially with all the shit he's talked over the years i'm surprised that a rumor that came from Lars includes Slayer. Personally i don't much care for them but i'd go see'm if they were with Metallica and Megadeth. Anthrax looks to put on a good show.
i really hope that goes through ok and reaches the US. ====================================================

Why does Kerry King have to swallow any pride? I really don’t think those grown men are as petty as the fans are. So King has an opinion of Mustaine (one that many agree with), and Mustaine has an opinon on, well, pretty much everyone and everything and doesn’t mind sharing it with anyone. Outside of shit talking, what harm has really been done? If this were 20 years ago, sure, but guys in their 40s aren’t going to let petty shit talking get in the way of sound business decisions.
Besides, incase you’re not aware, Slayer and Megadeth recently toured Canada, and they’re about to get together to tour Australia this fall. Kerry and Dave don’t even have to associate with each other. This isn’t about socializing and pleasure, this is about the business of performing music for thousands and making thousands of dollars doing so. They could give a shit less about the “he said” bullshit. Otherwise they would have all shot the idea down on the spot. None of them are stupid enough to do that.
It’s all about the love of and the business of music. To 40-something men, all that other shit is just extras and it’s all easily tossed aside. This tour happening in Europe is very likely. The U.S., that’s trickier. Perhaps a few festivals at best, but who knows. It will be the end of Metallica’s touring cycle sometime next summer or fall, so we’ll see.

I wonder if Dave would really want to tour with Metallica? He seems to have issues with Kerry King of Slayer. And what about Dave saying that Scott Ian told him Metallica were going to fire Lars back in 86. These are not major issues I just wonder if they could all work together through a world tour for a year. I really hope they can.

Throw in enough money and they'll dance together on stage. On the other hand, they could bring Maiden for this tour, so at least the other bands wouldn't have to fight for the headlining slot.

Mustaine would DEFINITELY take Metallica up on the offer if he was officially invited. However, he will NOT do it if Megadeth doesn't go on right before Metallica. Either way, this would be the biggest metal show in history. They need to call it Big 4 Fest or Clash of the Titans again. This tour would make ALL of the bands millions of dollars. It would fill stadiums.

Any one of these bands could easily be replaced by other thrash acts of the day IF
They don't want to do the tour at all OR they can't hack it.
Testament,Overkill,Exodus,Sacred Reich are all out there waiving the thrash flag around. I'd go top see the 4 I just jotted down in small clubs.

MAN, all this talk and thought of classic thrash metal are awesome. Those were the days. I don't know how many of you were "of age" to really appreciate those bands back in the day but it was a great time.
NOTHING from that period will ever be replicated. These bands can try but it just won't happen. However they can still bring that music to us live. I saw Testament again a little while back in a small club and they tore the place down. They, still got it and I know first hand that Overkill does too.

Dude, I was most definitely around during that time. I was 15 when I went to my first concert, which was Metallica in 1988 (w/ Queensryche opening). The years 89 and 90 were truly the climax years in my opinion because I was the perfect age for that stuff and there were so many of them putting out great music. Hell, in 89-90 you had so many seminal albums: Rust in Peace, Seasons in the Abyss, Persistence of Time, Handle With Care, The Years of Decay, Act III, Practice What You Preach (won't mention Souls of Black), Cowboys from Hell....the list goes on.
Good times, man. Good times.

anthrax sucked even before metallica did, they'd be lucky to be on any tour let alone one with slayer. they developed rock-star attitudes early on and after years of mediocrity and line up changes it's just one big shit sandwich. fuck anthrax.
and fuck metallica too. don't get me wrong, I saw them many times, even with cliff burton. they had their day but that day has been over for a long time. lars ulrich is the weak link.
testament, after 22 years, is at the top of their game.. the latest tour was as good as the new order tour, they waste metallica and anthrax. not sure about megadeth as I haven't seen them in years, but they were hit or miss in the past.
as an old school thrash metalhead, I liked music from bands who didn't have a pot to piss in, not comfortable rock stars with their own fashion and coffee brands.
best new old-school metal: hades rise by aura noir.

I agree with your post 100% bro.
The scene was great and it peaked for sure in the late 80's early 90's. There where a ton of GREAT thrash metal albums in the span of 2-3 years and then it fizzled and Metallica went rock and grunge was the new fashion. But most of those thrash acts stayed around and continued to pump out good music. I also liked the "Death" metal from that era too.
Good times indeed!!! :)

Sounds too good to be true, but it would be a great tour. My biggest question is why would Metallica do this? They can sell out any arena or stadium in the world with a local cover band opening. Other than the historical nature of it, it really doesn't benefit them financially at all? For the other bands it would be huge, to play in front of Metallica sized crowds. We'll see, but I will be surprised if it were to happen...

The best part about the 4 that are mentioned is that they are classic thrash bands from a certain time period. MH doesn't fit that bill. Testament,Overkill,Exodus all do. Fuck Machine Head anyway. Just sayin'.
I'd rather see Suicidal Tendencies on this than Machine Head.

If this tour ACTUALLY HAPPENS, it better take place in the US. I am sick of Europe getting spoiled as far as the metal scene goes. Yes, I know that the metal scene is thriving in Europe whereas most people in the US are too busy worshipping pop singers.
But there is that wide net of metal fans in the US (like me) who would love to see something like this. And if for whatever reason, this took place in Europe only, I'd be highly pissed. Bring money issues or general interest or whatever into it as a logical explanation, and I still won't care. I just want to see a tour like this before they all retire.
As one of my friends says: Europe gets Wacken, Download, and Rock am Ring. The US gets Mayhem, Ozzfest, and Warped Tour. Now, where would YOU rather live?

I would like Sodom added to the bill please. Maybe Kreator & Exodus also - you could make it a day-long festival. Could you imagine that shit? Fuck that would be great.
I would like to see Mustaine join Metallica on stage for the four horsemen or mechanix... like that would happen.

How can you get "excited" about a rumored tour that is never actually going to happen? I just don't know what to say anymore, Scott, but could you PLEASE SHUT YOUR FUCKING MOUTH!?!?!!?!?!
The day that Cliff Burton comes back from the dead to rejoin Metallica is the day this tour happens.

Yep. First thrash show for me was Slayer and Overkill in Seattle on Halloween night, 1986. Metallica w/ Metal Church, two months later. Damn, those were awesome shows. Saw Anthrax w/ Metal Church but I kind of thought Anthrax was joke, what with Belladona's Indian headdress and Ian carrying around a big sign that said "NOT" (still don't know what the fuck that was supposed to mean, but they seemed to like it a lot). Never cared much for Megadeth, mainly because of Dave's voice. But for the fans, that would be a killer tour.
I don't think it will happen, though.

not only should Testament be on the bill... they should headline.
None of these bands have released anything relevant in the last 10-15 years. Anthrax?!? Yawn.
At least glam nostalgia has hot chicks at the shows.

john bush was asked to be metallica's lead singer, said no, result was hetfield. the reason that Anthrax will be on the bill has nothing to do with the balance of the band...the boys in metallica love Bush and want him to be there. Which begs the question...why not drop anthrax and bring on Armored Saint?

@ guys calling Machine "overrated" Head. give yourselves a punch in the nose,MH has nothing to do with classic thrash metal. their place is supporting bands like Limp Bizkit.

Anthrax only deserves to be on that bill if Joey and Danny come back...again. I would love to see Exodus over Anthrax if not. With Souza it would be insane. Oh well.

Yeah, man, believe me I thought about all those bands too (especially a reunited Seputura), but I had to just draw the line at "American Thrash". Now, if we want to take a page from Europe (those fuckers are spoiled) and make it like a 2 or 3 day fest, then we could get really ridiculous with the list of bands!
But...gotta get back to reality...for now.

i know about slayer and megadeth but i was talking about kerry and lars. i thought those too didn't get along. i know grown men are less likely to do petty shit like you said its just that i know Kerry doesn't like lars and i know he doesn't like Metallica, he probably respects them. I hope your right i really wanna see this show if they all tour together, its just that i can see something stupid breaking it all up quick like deciding who opens for who ya know.
This tour could get alot of cash for everyone involved so anyone who wouldn't be able or even try to put up with the other one would be stupid.

It's a possibility, but it won't tour the States. It's financially far more viable for it to tour Europe, UK and even South America, but the US is difficult to successfully tour and by that I mean, make a profit.
Those four bands won't be playing without major $$ coming their way, so if it's a choice between 20,000 kids in Tuscon or 80,000 in Berlin, [who will have also paid an obscene amount of money for their ticket, compared to a US priced one], it begins to look fairly simple... It won't play the US or MAYBE it will play the coasts, like LA and NYC and that's it.
If it did go ahead, it would be something like six or so dates in major European cities and maybe one or two in England.
Man, if scientists could somehow bottle the ego and testosterone emanating from that tour, they could probably solve the energy crisis.
