MUSTAINE: '10 Million People' Think I Should Have Been Inducted Into ROCK HALL With METALLICA - Sep. 10, 2009
MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine was recently interviewed by Cindy Scull of the Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas radio station 97.1 The Eagle Rocks. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

On MEGADETH's new album, "Endgame":

Dave Mustaine: "'Endgame' was a record that we started... Some of the riffs I've had for years, and a lot of the stuff that connected all these riffs were written recently. In fact, even the song 'Headcrusher', that was the last song we wrote on this record. Shawn Drover [MEGADETH's current drummer] had co-wrote it with me and he'd had some stuff that he'd written and he sent it to me and I listened to it and I go, 'I don't like it.' And I was thinking, 'Why don't I like this?' So I picked up the guitar one day and I tried to figure out what he wrote. And the reason I didn't like it was because I had already written it before — he had the beginning of [the MEGADETH track] 'Take No Prisoners' [from the 1990 album 'Rust In Peace'] in his song. I was like, 'Shawn, you can't do that.' So when I was able to listen to the song and get past that first riff, I found a couple of really great segments in the song. But it was weird; when you're hearing something that you can't quite put your finger on, and then you realize it's your stuff. [laughs] It was actually flattering. When I got to the next part in the song, it ended up [being] inspiring enough to help me wanna do a song with him. 'Cause I've been doing this a really long time; it's a little bit easier for me to understand how to put a song together than for most guys. Shawn is such a great bandmember. When Junior [former MEGADETH bassist David Ellefson] and I parted ways, I thought, well, even though I don't care for this guy anymore after suing me, I certainly know it's gonna be some big shoes to fill. And when Shawn came in, I had no idea that the ambassador role that Junior filled that Shawn was gonna take over, but he did, and he does it great. And when James Lomenzo [current MEGADETH bassist] came in... I was comparing James MacDonough [Ellefson's initial replacement in MEGADETH] to Junior a lot, and it wasn't working. But when Lomenzo came in, he plays as good as Junior does, and he sings better, because Junior couldn't sing. James was part of that WHITE LION thing way back in the '80s, and he can sing, man — he can sing really good."

On why he didn't attend METALLICA's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in Cleveland, Ohio in April 2009:

Dave Mustaine: "Well, I'm not gonna sit in the audience and watch the band I started with these two guys get inducted and me not be a part of it."

On whether METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich was "being a dick" to him when Lars called him to invite him to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony:

Dave Mustaine: "I'm not gonna comment on that, but you can read through the lines. Anybody who heard anything that went down there, if they know Lars, they know that's how he is. I think he did the best that he could with trying to talk to me, because I know that I don't make him comfortable. And I'm sad about that, because I've tried really hard to bury the hatchet with this cat."

On some people's assertion that Mustaine should have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with METALLICA:

Dave Mustaine: "There's ten million people that agree [I should have been inducted]. . . You know what [Lars] said to me?! He said, [imitating Lars' Danish accent] 'Only the people that are on the fucking record can be at the Hall of Fame, man.' And I was like, 'Well, Hooked On Phonics worked for me; I can read my name; it's all over [the first METALLICA album]. [laughs] But you know what?! It's OK, 'cause if I'm gonna get into the Hall of Fame, there's nothing he can do to stop me."

During the interview, Mustaine also confirmed that he is once again single, having split up with his wife of 18 years, Pamela Mustaine.

Cindy Scull's entire 16-minute chat with Dave Mustaine is now available for streaming in two parts below.

Part 1:

Part 2:

Dave and his wife previously filed for divorce twice, according to San Diego Superior Court records — in February 2008 and May 2006 — only to apparently change their minds and withdraw the petitions.

Dave Mustaine married Pamela Anne Casselberry in 1991. They have one son, Justis, born in 1992, and a daughter, Electra, born in 1998. The family has lived in Arizona, but is believed to currently reside in Fallbrook, California.

If you really wanna show up James and Lars, why not re-record your own versions of Metallica songs that you wrote? Given the choice of Mechanix and Four Horsemen, I'd take the later any time of day.

I agree, with the slim number of inductees every year and the huge number of well known bands that aren't in yet there's no way Megadeth gets in anytime soon, and maybe never. Black Sabbath, Metallica, Van Halen, these are all bands that even people who despise heavy metal recognize were instrumental in its evolution. There's absolutely zero chance Megadeth will get in before Iron Maiden and Judas Priest (the latter of which has been eligible for well over a decade with no HOF love in sight), and they probably won't make it in before Slayer either.

I personally believe Dave needs to get over it. Sure he wrote a lot of stuff for Metallica - including some he never got credit for. But he didn't play on any records.

That said, I don't mean to imply that Dave should be inducted for his songwriting prowess.

I don't really agree with the HOF as an institution, but to whatever extent it exists and other people take it seriously I pretty much agree with their decision to let the bands decide how to deal with former members. It would have been a cool gesture for Metallica to allow him to be inducted with them but I don't think that it's his birthright.

Metallica didn't get inducted for just their first couple albums, they were inducted for their career as a whole and Mustaine was only there for a minute -admittedly seminal, but minute nonetheless - sliver of that history.

He really needs to let go of Metallica. he was in for eleven months. He wrote some great tunes, but some of Megadeth's stuff is even better than some of those. I like Metallica more than Megadeth, but I still love Megadeth.

Dave didn't write anything from Master of Puppets. He claims he wrote the riff of "Lepper Messiah", but everyone else denies it. He probably had something to do with it, but not all of it.

We all know Metallica would of never dominated those early REAL thrash days without Mustaine, his influence and material that was a factor in Metallica's first THREE albums. Some guy on here said "Kill Em All through Master." YEP, and those were the three albums that defined Metallica as great. Not Load, Reload and St. Anger, or Black Album, Garage Days Revised and Death Magnetic. Fricking KILL/RIDE/MASTER! And Justice was amazing but nothing like the first three, and Black and everything after has been complete crap minus a few songs here and there. I own the first four albums, and Garage revised only because I love a few of the remakes, but the rest I could care less about. Black was the actual album that turned Metallica in MTV filth, if it was not for this one horrible fact I might credit that album a little more, but to me Black represented the end of the Metallica I knew. Ask someone what their 5 favorite songs from Metallica are, if one of those 5 is Enter Sandman, slap them across the face and say "Wrong!" (terminator voice) Enter Sandman is the very song that brought the new Metallica into the shiny happy people world. F them! DAVE FOR PRESIDENT! And where the hell is Shawn Starr?

You have a point that he's answering the questions put in front of him, but at the same time the journalists are asking these questions in the first place because they know they can expect an inflammatory answer out of him. The dude just cannot resist an opportunity to take a dig at his former bandmates. Even Lars, asspipe that he is, usually takes the high road when questions about Mustaine came up, even if it's only because he's in a position that being dismissive of Mustaine is the most hurtful blow he can inflict.

Which is what it all comes down to. Mustaine's ego just won't allow him to admit that Metallica have long since moved on and he doesn't factor into their world at all. I'm not really convinced myself that he actually wants a reconciliation, I think he just wants to get under their skin enough that Lars and James lose the same kind of sleep at night that he does. I'm not a Dave basher, but even his staunchest defenders have to admit that he has major, major issues that Jesus can't fix for him.

Has anyone realised, Mustaine became the people he hates? I mean seriously, look how many people HE has fired! Do you hear any of them having a sook the way he does about Metallica? And he sits there and says 'poor me, poor everything that happened to me', yet he happily has band members come and go, flames them himself and just rants on about it.

What does he want? A medal of honour from the guys? GET OVER IT MATE! YOU GOT SACKED...25 YEARS AGO TOO!!! He sounds like a chick who can't let go of her highschool crush or something. He clearly is delusional. Or has a problem in the brain.

Dear Dave,
My respect for you is now officially over.
That is all.
Bye

For fuck's sake, you both are raving idiots. You cannot be taken seriously. Are you kidding me? If Dave supposedly has riffs in Leper Messiah and was not credited for them, then there would have been a lawsuit. 23 fucking years ago, and no lawsuit? That fact renders his baseless claim to be bullshit.

A lot of you dumbasses are saying "he wrote some of Metallica's songs" when the reality is he has a handful of riffs in 6...SIX songs!. The 4 songs on Kill'em All (Horsemen, JITF, PL, & MM)only have an average of 4 riffs. If James, Lars and Dave credited as co-writers, how in the hell is it possible for the guy to be solely responsible for any of them.

Then you get to the to songs on Ride the Lightning (title track & 'Tulu), where Cliff Burton also has writing credits. Well, shit, Cliff was the guy who taugh all those guys about melody and harmony (too bad Dave missed out on that), and he had a HUGE hand in how the material turned out. So I would imagine that Dave's presense on RTL is even more marginal in the two songs that have his name on them. It's all about riffs. Anyone can write riffs, but the arranging and selection of those riffs into actual SONGS has always been primarily James and Lars, with a big assit from Cliff for the three and a half years he was in the band.

I swear, when you un-educated fuckers blab on here you bring down the collective IQ of the entire human race. Shut the fuck up and stop trying to peddle your opinions and speculations as fact when all it is is complete and utter liess and misinformation.

Lars didn't make up the fucking rules about induction you idiot, the hall of fame does. Lars was simply stating the facts, that you have to have performed on the album, not co-write it. At least he had the decency to fucking ask Dave, do you honestly think Dave would do the same if he was in the same position? I doubt it.

Artjunkie is spot on. Riffs are important, but so too are all the other aspects of music: the vocals, the lyrics, the arrangements, composition, etc. Mustaine wrote some riffs for early Metallica. Whup-de-fuckin'-do. Why can't the idiot just let it go? In a career of hundreds of songs he writes BITS of about HALF A DOZEN. He's a small footnote in the history of the band, but still he desperately clings to them. There are countless other bands who had members for brief periods in their early history, but I've never seen anything like this level of bitching. They MOVE ON.

You called it well. Hell, Testament had a guy named Derek Ramirez in the band (Eric Peterson's cousin) prior to getting Alex Skolnick as 2nd guitarist (back when they were called The Legacy). Testament's first album, "The Legacy" has all the songs from their formation to then. That means that former members' material will be included because they were contributors. And thus credited as such. I haven't heard one peep out of Derek Ramirez about the riffs of his that got included in those early song. If you're properly credited for your contribution AND you receive the publishing royalties, you have nothing to bitch about.

Bands are a business and as a lowly little ignorant fan like you, you have no idea what their expenses and percentages are so all you’re doing is talking shit as is typical of jealous whiners like you.

And, as if making money in your career with obvious hard work is a bad thing. You’re obviously 12 years old and never worked a day in your pathetic life. And such a hypocrite, acting like you wouldn’t take every penny offered to you.

For the millionth time, Dave did not PLAY on any Metallica records. Playing in clubs with them before they were famous and co-writing a few songs does not get you in the Hall Of Fame.

Did anyone see Rick Dufay and Jimmy Crespo at Aerosmith's induction?

Did Billy Preston go in with the Beatles?

NO! And they all PLAYED on recordings!

How about Ian Stewart? He was part of the Rolling Stones, but because of his look, was made "just the piano player" yet he was on all those records and tours for years.

Dave your big mouth has made sure you will always be known as "the guy who was in Metallica before they made it" instead of anything you've accomplished since.

Regardless of whether you like / love these two songs, Metallica performed "Master of Puppets" and "Enter Sandman" at their induction because those two songs are the most widely known and best representation of all phases of their career (if you had to pick two songs, which they did, those are the ones). Dave Mustaine, regardless of his enormous contribution to the songwriting in the early days which the band milked for years after he left, was not a part of those two songs. He just wasn't. End of story.

I was with you in your previous post until in your latter post you add this “which the band milked for years” comment. Milked? There are 6 (count them, S-I-X) songs that have a combined total of 6-9 riffs by Dave Mustaine integrated into songs CO-WRITTEN by other members in the band called METALLICA. It’s this awesome new invention called a band COLLABORATION. Just because some shithead gets kicked out the band doesn’t mean a band is going to totally dismantle its collaborated songs to omit a part or two and then re-write or re-record it, UNLESS said band has no intention of crediting/paying this former member and does not want that person associated on paper with their legacy. Metallica went on to play songs WRITTEN by METALLICA MEMBERS which included songs -- The Four Horsemen, Jump in the Fire, Phantom Lord, Metal Militia, Ride the Lightning and The Call of Ktulu – all written BY METALLICA when its membership featured one Dave Mustaine.

And for the 1, 786,453th time Dave Mustaine was 1. CREDITED for his contributions; 2. subsequently PAID ROYALTIES for his contribution. That is the end of his entitlement.

he was in the band, even though he did get kicked out before recording he had a part in the first 3 albums. He will eventually get inducted with megadeth but whats right is right, hey he could have sued not to use any of his stuff in metallica and his name is mentioned in the albums so he should be getting some royalty unless he signed eveything to metallica.

For one Mustaine was talking shit about Lars and the rest of metallica like 2 months ago. And yet he says he's been "trying" to bury the hatchet for a long time?

Would honesty kill these guys? Complete lies every single interview. Show the fans a bit more respect, they are not complete idiots.

Secondly, Lars has a point. Dave contributed to early metallica big time, but metallica was inducted into the hall of fame based on their careers not just one or two albums. Dave was there for a brief period, then got booted for being a drug addict. Now sorry but if Mustaine get's in, it should be for Megadeth, not metallica.

I wish everyone would just stop talking.. and just play. I like megadeth, but I like them less everytime Dave opens his mouth. And the persona should not effect how I view the band. But this guy is just so fucking annoying.

Is so adamant that he deserves to have been inducted into the RRHoF with Metallica simply because he co-wrote some songs with them, but never himself appeared on a Metallica album, I'm wondering if Megadeth ever gets inducted, will he invite Bud Praeger (his old manager/producer/whatever) get inducted with him also? I mean, hooked on phonics worked for me and Praeger's name is all over that craptastic "Risk" album, since Mustaine thought it was a good idea to let him co-write songs on that album.
