KILLSWITCH ENGAGE Bassist: KERRY KING 'Doesn't Get It' That You Can Smile On Stage

KILLSWITCH ENGAGE bassist Mike D'Antonio has responded to Kerry King's recent comment that the SLAYER guitarist is "offended by the silliness" of KILLSWITCH's live performance. KILLSWITCH ENGAGE and SLAYER toured together as part of this summer's Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, also featuring BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE, among others. In a July 2009 interview with MusicRadar.com, King was asked about the reports that SLAYER once threw KILLSWITCH ENGAGE off one of its tours. "We actually didn't get able to," Kerry replied. "I tried. Because I'd never seen 'em live, and then I saw them live at some, I don't know, maybe at Kerrang! Awards over in Europe. And I'm just offended by the silliness that goes on on stage [on the part of] the guitar player [ Adam Dutkiewicz]. He puts his foot in his mouth all the time and he says stupid shit, and I just didn't think that side show should be on my stage. So I pulled the plug on the spot, but on that particular Jägermeister tour, we didn't have any product and they did, so Jäger kind of insisted, and I went... They're all friends of mine, so I said, 'OK, I'll deal with it.' [But I] still don't like it." Way Too Loud! recently asked D'Antonio how he felt about Kerry King's remarks. "I heard a little too much about it," he said. "We just did the Mayhem tour [with SLAYER], and it was uncomfortable. They don't get it, and probably never will, that you can actually be in a metal band and have fun, and smile. You can do things differently than other metal bands have ever done. We just like to have a good time. We just a party band, and I think that comes from punk-rock roots where anything goes. A lot of the old guys think it has to be straight-forward or nothing, and that's their loss, I guess." Kerry's comments regarding KILLSWITCH ENGAGE's live show were not the first time a veteran heavy metal musician has slammed the Massachusetts band for its unconventional stage presentation. In the February 2008 issue of Sweden's Close-Up magazine, SOULFLY/ex- SEPULTURA frontman Max Cavalera described the experience of seeing a KILLSWITCH ENGAGE live show. "I went to see LAMB OF GOD in that States and they were alright, but KILLSWITCH ENGAGE opened and it was the gayest show I've ever seen," he said. "I was like, 'I'm not part of this scene, it's fucking gay.' They were acting like they were U2 and I was like, 'Hmm….' The attitude was so ridiculous. I don't know these guys, they're on my label [ Roadrunner] and all, but it was completely disappointing and gay. Like really lame, such a lame band live, everything about the whole attitude. LAMB OF GOD came out and destroyed them and I don't even like LAMB OF GOD that much, but they were so much better coming after KILLSWITCH ENGAGE. I was like, 'If that's what the scene is about, hey fuck it, it ain't got nothing to do with me.'"

Like KSE or not, he makes a point. Just because you are a metal band does not mean you have to go out there with a snarl look and act angry every second.
KSE's recent album is boring though.
Lamb of God rules, so I disagree with D'Antonia there.
And what is gayer, KSE having some fun on stage, or Slayer playing in Bam Margera's backyard for his birthday party???

I quite enjoy KsE's live show! It's a lot more interesting than Slayer's but whatever- I enjoy both bands. :)

That's in terms of music AND stupidity. Kerry and Max sound like like idiots. Then again, so does anyone who acts like metal has set rules for performing. If they're having fun on stage, why should they give a fuck what every bonehead, neanderthal metalhead has to say? If you think they should change their live show to reflect a certain attitude or your own expectations, you're as 'gay' and 'lame' as Killswitch.

nothing wrong with having fun on stage. The guys in KsE don't have it in their personalities to act all tough and shit so they don't do it. Adam D. has said that he isn't going to act all tough and shit on stage because he's not tough and most people can probably kick his ass anyway so why bother.
Just be yourself on stage, just because you're in a metal band doesn't mean you have to act a certain way. I definitely prefer bands like KsE that can have a little fun and goof off on stage, it makes the show more entertaining and it makes them seem so much more approachable and accessible to the fans.
Oh and Cavalera sounds like a 15 year old kid in this interview.

First of all, I dont care for metalcore at all (the genre itself is kinda gay), but does anybody even expect Kerry King to "get" anything? The guy's a douche, too much jäger killed the sad remains of his brains. Grow the fcku up!
As performers, I think Killswitch Engage do a pretty damn good job, and their fans love them for what they do. Bands like Tankard, Hot Leg, Red Warzsawa etc. also goof around and ocassionally smile - and what the helle is wrong with smiling anyways? It is soo stereotypic, that metal bands has to be angry all the time to be taken seriously. Grow the fcuk up!
Slayer has been a joke for 18 years, producing nothing but generic crap since the early 90s. Yeah they were Gods once...but the glory is long gone (so is the mystery that made the band awesome), and now we all know how dumb Kerry King is, and how sad his guitar-playing is.

The last three Slayer albums and anything Sep. has put out since Chaos A.D is much more cringe inducing than Killswitch's live show. Stereotypical 'tough guy' music with no thought involved.
When Kerry and Max start writing albums like Schizophrenia and Hell Awaits again, then they can talk about integrity.
Such a huge fall in quality is lamer than a couple of guys doing what they want on stage. Every negative thing you could say about KSE's live show is exactly what they're going for, so you're pretty much playing into their expectations.

Im not saying King is the best around by any means.But lets get serious about Adam D being a good guitar player...he isnt,at all.When comparing King to Adam D,there is no comparison.King hasnt put out anything quality IMO in a while.I prefer Jeff Hannenman any day over King.But my favorite guitar players would have to be Dallas and Karl Sanders from Nile,Pat Obrien from CC and Frederik from Opeth.Shredability and soul.Adam has none of the above.

kerry king is full of shit in general. they were more than happy to take Killswitch out on tour with them when Howard first joined the band. I saw them play at upstairs at the Palladium in MA right before that tour and Kerry was standing in the back of the venue watching and headbanging the whole time. That man has so much shit flowing out of his mouth he might as well be a toilet. He likes to bash Megadeth but he played guitar in the band when it first started. etc. etc.

(BTW Slayer is a wicked band, but a wicked group of guys they are not. Tom is the only respectable one of the bunch, because he doesn't take all this shit so seriously. It's fucking music, guys.)

I enjoy listening to Slayer.
I enjoy listening to Killswitch Engage.
I wish I could listen to a KsE live performance as opposed to seeing one. I don't mind heavy metal musicians smiling and having a good time, but Adam's behavior is ridiculous. It's fairly amazing several people haven't beaten his ass yet.

Max your right..no argument there. I still like Lamb of God alot and to be honest I like em more than Soulfly (face it Max Soulfy is weak and lame and will never be better than what you did with Sepultura), but as for what you felt and said about KSE, they are gay as fuck; music,presence,all of it. Kerry King I applaud you for your comments and attempts to get them off the stage so they could perform no further stupidness and give the people bad thoughts about what they might think is metal. So many better bands are out there that would be able to open for Slayer. Maybe these silly ass tour gurus shoudl actually try and find good bands to put on bills rather than filler band scene bitch bullshit bands. HAIL KERRY AND MAX FOR DEFENDING THE THRONE!!!

Slayer has a great history, but as people have pointed out quite rightly they have tarnished it with recently boring guitar work, provocational comments of other bands to highlight their record = very weak, and poor albums.
in fact most of the metal `titans` save Megadeth with endgame which will be spot on, have brought out poor recent records, death magnetic didnt set the world aflame did it? overhyped The Blackening wasn`t as good as previous MFH cds either, although journos loved it and the sheep jump up and down on the hype.
go to a metal club and do they play anything from the recent slayer album? hmm no - raining blood, angel of death, seasons etc. these latest albums are pretty weak efforts compared to raining blood, which is how fukn old? TWENTY PLUS YEARS!
dont get me wrong, some Slayer songs will live forever, but its sad for me to see that they are hyping records by slagging off others just to keep in the press, i hope the new album is mint, but they aren`t gonna be around forever.
Oh, and LOG are the future of metal, like or fkin not.

Regarding what these fluffs in KSE said, I think they should be on the Warped Tour and/or playing with pop-punk bands, instead of metal bands. If these clowns want to have a dance party to celebrate life, let 'em tour with the Gym Class Heroes or Miley Cyrus. Who the hell do they think Slayer are ?

You don´t get the point man, you can have fun onstage and ANYONE can do it: I love some fun bands like Acid Reign (RIP), Municipal Waste, ST, BUT a VERY different thing is that an assclown with a flag or whatever you may call it hanging from his back moves like a duck raising his legs. I don´t care whether he smiles or not because I can hardly see his face, but I can see him performing and moving like that senselessly, THAT is what makes think of this band, WTF????? I saw them in June, and they were disgusting.

I dont make the rules and if some dude wants to wear a fucking dracula cape on stage and do pushups and act like he's 12 then that's on him. I also dont think Kerry or Slayer are too serious either...they're just a straight forward band and want to give the fans what they paid for..a musical performace. My personal feeling is that if you want to have a bunch a wacky shit going on while you're playing then go for it and be GWAR, otherwise it's a distraction...props,costumes,too much in between song banter,pranks,etc. should be secondary to the music always if I want to see a bunch of frat boy horseshit i'll watch Jackass. I think the problem with KsE from a performance standpoint is Adam D is cut from the Jim Carrey mold of always trying to hard to be the funny guy...lose the cape Batman, play your fucking guitar and shut the fuck up.

Man you guys have not even put out any good albums. Slayer puts out awsome albums everytime. Kerry can kick your ass in guitar, lyrics, physically just anything. Hell I would like you to say that to his face next time you see him. I guarantee Mr. King will say something to you if he sees you.
Don't fuck with thrashers bitch especially Kerry or Max you're just a noob in the metal scene. If you went to an Exodus show and Paul Baloff was alive I bet he would point you out as a poser and have your fuckin ass kicked.

This has nothing to do with either band, but who the fuck cares if KSE likes to joke around on stage? They sound the exact same live, and play excellently. Slayer is an awesome band in my book as well but why does everything have to be taken so seriously? A band should be able to have fun and do whatever they want on stage, if it brings the people together who gives a shit. I understand Slayer's legendary stance in the music business but Christ, KK's gotta chill out man.
