I'm assuming the piano version is JLB with Rudess and JP's solo. If it is, it's great. There's a version on youtube.

Portnoy is an amazing drummer. I love DT so much, but mike's voice is ANNOYING. you aren't good. at all. not even your "metal scream" on the newer albums. Stupid.
I understood you wrote Best of Times for your father, and i'm sorry to hear of his passing. But would you want James to do the drumming on the track? no.

This the worst song on the album, but sadly the only one that could be used as a single (other than aRoP)... It was written in the sky that they wrote that song specifically for this purpose...

I like the Piano Version and the JP demo is pretty cool. I agree Mike can't hit the high note like James. The JP demo really surprised me though, he doesn't sound too bad at all.

Portnoy's vocals are definitely hit and miss. But there are many times where he sounds great depending on the note/range in which he is having to sing a certain part in. The parts where he stands out are the ones where you REALLY notice him because he stands out in a bad way. When he's on and blending in, you don't notice him because you shouldn't notice when its done right - because it sounds like its supposed to. Certain things you only notice when they are done wrong or badly unfortunately.

Mike, please, for the sake of my ears and the future likelihood of purchasing another DT album, STOP SINGING!!!!
Having to suffer it live is one thing, as I am sure you never want to resort to canned background vocals. In studio is another matter altogether.
You seriously need to dial down your Napoleon complex and stop micromanaging every damn aspect of the recording process. Your singing is such a trainwreck against James' vocals and will never fit. Likewise, please abandon the whole "blast beat" fixation. I really don't need a progressive version of Slayer.
Thank you. Hugs and kisses.

jesus F'ing christ portnoy WTF DUDE! Your little vocal appearences on the studio albums are tolerable. The way you utterly destroyed "take the time" on the last live album was almost unforgivable. But this?? this blasphemy... omg dude, stay behind the drumkit and keep your fucking mouth shut you suck at singing and have a horrible voice... PLEASE STOP!!!!

Go ahead and download it from itunes, its worth the $4 or whatever it was. It is an interesting listen.
The piano version was as expected, soft, slow, and tender, an interesting diversion from DT's usual stuff. It almost sounds like a coffee house band doing a cover of it, and I don't mean that in a bad way.
JP's vocal demo was surprizing; he can sing a lot better than I thought, he has a cool roughness to his delivery.
As for MP's vocal demo of Best of Times, Mike himself has repeated stated in interviews that James is "the voice of Dream Theater" and that of course James sings BOT much better than he does. Mike just figured that people might want to hear his take. I agree, James gives a better performance in every way, but it was interesting to hear Mike; he was a lot softer and more subdued than I thought it would be.
Don't worry, if Mike had wanted to "ruin" the song he would have made that the album version instead of a novelty EP.

I like some of the Metallica demos from the black album singles, yeah, sure.
Demo's generally suck. ____________________
It's comparable to watching a DVD of someone (building) putting your car together @ a factory - somethin' like that, anyway.
Now, if they gave them away... DT's new LP, seriously is killer and Portnoy can't sing as well as James Hetfield, but he is acceptable, to me on a song or two.
peace, out

Mike is a shitty singer. Period.
And he wants to take over lead singer position in DT. The newer albums suffer greatly from his increasing vocal parts.
