Ex-KORN Guitarist HEAD Allegedly Asks To Come Back To The Band, Gets Denied
- Sep. 14, 2009
|
|
Altitude TV conducted an interview this past Saturday (September 12) with KORN guitarist James "Munky" Shaffer. Watch a two-minute excerpt from the chat below. When asked about KORN's current relationship with former members Brian "Head" Welch (guitar) and David Silveria (drums), Munky said, "It's kind of a strange thing. Brian actually contacted us recently and wanted to come back to the band. And it was not the right time... for us. We're doing well, and it's kind of like... It's kind of like if you divorced your wife and she went on and she stayed successful and her career flourished, and you go back and [say], 'My gosh, she's still hot.' 'Baby, can we get back together?' 'Wait a minute... All the stuff's been divided, and it's like...' I don't see it happening right now. It's not gonna happen right now. As far as David goes, I heard he sold every single drum he owns... or he gave it away. He doesn't even own a drum stick. I mean, it blows me away... Wow, one of the best drummers I've ever played with and I think a lot of people have ever heard. Just to go... 180 [degrees]... go the opposite direction. I don't think he wants anything to do... The music business can be dirty and some people can endure it and some people just don't want anything to do with it once something bad has happened to them." For more than a decade, Welch was lead guitarist for the controversial rock band KORN, but in early 2005 he shocked the international music community when he abruptly quit the band and announced that he had been saved by Jesus Christ. His announcement in front of 10,000 people in Bakersfield, California set off a media frenzy, as people from around the world sought to understand what led this rock star into the light. In a May 2009 interview with Noisecreep, Welch said that he was fully happy with his decision to leave the band and has not considered a return to the group that made him famous. "If I ever felt God lead me back to KORN for some reason, I'd go," he said. Silveria left KORN in late 2006, taking a "temporary hiatus" to spend time with his family and oversee his restaurant business.

LEAD guitarist? What qualifies either guitarist in this band to be the "lead" guitarist? I've never heard a KORN lead in any song before. lol I'll admit I do not own any of their CDs, but I've heard many of their songs over the years. Don't recall any "leads". lol

im glad KoRn turned the offer down..it isnt good timing. why would they want him back just yet? he still preaches. he still says god is telling him what decisions to make. also, out of principal, you cant just fit into a band you left a few years ago, after all thats happened and said?? dont get me wrong..allow him back in time, when he is 100% right. would he be 100% commited to KoRn? would his reasons on coming back be right? this up and coming album will show the doubters/haters that theyre BACK where they belong..this album will be EPIC!
KoRn rules!

Yeah, there's never been a "lead" guitarist in Korn. I don't blame either side, and can understand where both are coming from. It would be cool to see Welch back in the band, though. Silveria too. The dudes they have on stage w/ them play w/ the ferocity of corpses, and wear stupid outfits.
" Also, to the poster above, re: solos... They don't have many solos, but some songs do. The best example is oddly enough the Pink Floyd cover though - many were surprised to see Head do the solos part entirely without much trouble."
Good point. They both played "One" well, too.

i dont believe he asked to be back in the band. i reckon korn is looking for some publicity. why? because head has been the one saying he aint getting back in korn, and all the korn members (up until this interview) have said countless times how they 'want head back' and how they 'wish head would return' etc. so no way would they have turned it down after he asked. plus, head's record is more 'korn' than anything korn has done in forever.

Strange since, they seemed to be all loyal and shit, by not allowing the touring guitarists on stage since they still felt that attachment to him.

But David Silveria is just an awful drummer. He's a bag of garabage. A piece of crap. He can drum for shit, and the world knows it. Congrats on your new drummer though! He's a talented guy.

Laz, I am inclined to believe your post. I have also seen a few interviews where JD wants Head back in the fold. Maybe it's some tomfoolery on both parts before he "may" rejoin? No doubt Head's playing was an integral part of their heyday sound. While Silveria may not be in Lombardo, Benante, or Adler-esque company, he was a solid drummer whose playing befit Korn's style to a tee.

David Silveria had a SIGNATURE STYLE, something that Chris Adler and Jason Bittner are far from achieving. His funk, hip-hop and hard rock fusion helped defined the Korn sound. He also made awesome use of electronics & gong bass drums. And was one of the first to use Hyper sized toms. He is also ONE of ONLY EIGHT esteemed Tama artists to have his own signature snare drum. Why you would compare his style to Virgil or Nicko is beyond me. Try use some logic to back your shitty argument.

I'm with Laz and Wahoos24012 on this one. I strictly remember seeing a recent interview on B-mouth with HEAD and he said he does not want to go back to Korn. And yes, I recall Davis saying all this stuff about how much he misses him and what not, so this definately seems fishy.

I did some digging on Blabbermouth...here's the video interview with HEAD, which happened just last month:
http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=125415
At 2:38-3:24 of the 5 minute interview, he specifically talks about Korn, how they're leaving the door open to him to come back, and how he wants to stick with his decision to part with them, etc.
He did say it is tempting to go back, so maybe he's since second guessed himself...

Korn was much better with Head in the band. I realize that he chose to do his own thing, and leave the band so he could find Jesus, and that's all good and fine, but doesn't anyone else hear the difference? With Head the music was much better. As far as "lead" guitarists in Korn, I agree there never was a "lead" guitarist, but they both did play leads, and they both played their own styles, and each brought something special to the band.

...for Korn!
Head's guitar playing was a staple of Korn's music. They were on the downhill slide already, but after he left, they hit the bottom.
As someone above already said, Head's solo album was more Korn-sounding than anything Korn has done recently.
I can't imagine them turning down the opportunity to have their signature sound return.

Anyhow, KoRn has been dead for sometime now. They just aren't the same. Not even close. I never really liked them anyway.

Silvera was decent drummer lets not heap too much praise on a guy that couldn't keep time live. he was always pushing and pulling. Just becayse he did fiddly ish on the drums with tiny cymbals and bells and incorporated electronic drums doesn't make that his own style. Lots of drummers out there would eat Silveria for lunch. He was a decent drummer, nothing more nothing less.
