OPETH Mainman: New KATATONIA CD Is Greatest 'Heavy' Record I've Heard In The Last 10 Years - Sep. 15, 2009
Guitarist/vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt of Swedish progressive metallers OPETH has issued the following update:

"KATATONIA's [forthcoming album] 'Night Is The New Day' is possibly the greatest 'heavy' record I've heard in the last 10 years.

"Most people know my history with them and also my friendship with the guys. Jonas [P. Renkse, KATATONIA vocalist] and I have been best buddies for the last 18 years or so.

"Every time OPETH or KATATONIA has a new record [coming out], we arrange a small private listening party. Usually with myself, Anders [Nyström, KATATONIA guitarist] and Jonas. For years we've managed to record albums around the same time and had both the new OPETH album and the new KATATONIA album played back on the same session. It's always great fun, however disciplined.

"You can't talk during playback (death penalty), you listen to the album all the way through twice, and then we have the 'comments.' Everything is washed down with beer or wine...there might be snacks on the table.

"Well, two days after the new KATATONIA album is mastered, here we are, holed up in a friend's apartment ready to go through the new masterpiece by KATATONIA. And it truly is a masterpiece! I have not been this taken back by an album for a long time. I almost had tears in my eyes. It's an absolutely stunning piece of music! Easily their most progressive and emotional record, as far as I'm concerned.

"The finale is almost too much to bear. Here we have some guest vocals by ENTER THE HUNT kingpin Krister Linder (Chris Lancelot to some) and it's quite fucking moving, to say the least.

"I've always been a fan of KATATONIA. Ever since I heard their first demo back in 1991 or 1992, and I thought they sounded like OPETH, haha! This record, however, is their crown jewel so far. It's an album that is 'more' than the music that's on there.

"How often do I plug something that's not from 1971? It gives you an indication where I stand on the matter maybe?"

Subscribers to the Peaceville Records mailing list are being given the first opportunity to download a free song from KATATONIA's eighth studio album, "Night Is The New Day". Entitled "Forsaker", the track is now available for streaming in the YouTube clip below.

"Night Is The New Day" is scheduled for release in Europe on November 2 (November 10 in North America) via Peaceville Records.

"Night is the New Day" track listing:

01. Forsaker
02. The Longest Year
03. Idle Blood
04. Onward Into Battle
05. Liberation
06. The Promise Of Deceit
07. Nephilim
08. New Night
09. Inheritance
10. Day & Then The Shade
11. Ashen (*Swedish edition CD and vinyl edition bonus track)
12. Departer

The mini-site for "Night is the New Day" can be accessed at this location It includes audio samples, downloads, album information, interviews, art gallery plus exclusive previously unseen studio diaries from the recording session.

Regarding his vocal performance on the CD, frontman Jonas P. Renkse recently said, "Even though I had done much of the vocal parts/ideas already on the demos, I couldn't imagine the extent of what was about to come. Starting out, I was feeling better than I thought, since I had problems with my throat earlier during the recording. It wasn't a cold as I first expected; I have no idea what it was/is, but it has affected me in some ways.

"More tracks nailed and listening back, I realize that I've never sung this MUCH on an album before. Not that I'm singing ALL THE TIME (don't worry), but the vocals are much more demanding. I hope it is because the singing is better, and not because my throat is worse."

The artwork for "Night Is The New Day" (see below) was once again designed by Travis Smith and closes the visual concept for "The Great Cold Distance" phase.

The new material was previously described by the band as "our most varied, diverse and possibly strongest shit all together on one and the same album."

"The Great Cold Distance" was released in 2006 via Peaceville. The follow-up to 2003's "Viva Emptiness" was recorded at Fascination Street studios in the outskirts of Örebro, Sweden and was mastered at the Cutting Room in Stockholm.

KATATONIA's live performance from 2006's Summer Breeze open-air festival in Germany was released as a double-disc live album/DVD, entitled "Live Consternation".

This band are great i don't really like this sort of music but I used to listen to these years ago and they are a special band, I can't remember the album but they did a great song, about Cocaine or some drug, called My Sweet nurse I think, the whole album with that song on is great, its quite beautiful music in a way.

Great song! I think I'll buy their new album.

But I just can't understand how the hell such a great band can be such a disappointing live band. They are awful on stage. It's like all their emotions are trapped inside them... but I guess this fact is reflected in their songs. Their entire catalogue is really a soundtrack to solipsism.

Ever since their very first album until now they have been one of a kind along with Opeth. They had a couple of so so albums in their transition period going from extreme to clean vocals but now they are exceptional once again!

I guess they have on and off nights... when I saw them they were great live... their first DVD from Poland with the Black Sessions was great... their current DVD "Live Consternation" was great as well. I guess it just depends on the night.

Katatonia means quality; as it is the case with Opeth. It might not be your thing or the heaviest music around but it surely has its own sound, feeling and identity. You can't find a lot of bands with such identity these days.

I'll buy the new album.

It's curious that two of my favourite bands have such a good relationship, I hope someday I can enjoy both live at the same show!

About the album, I'm sure Mike is right: Katatonia have never disappointed me (like Opeth); both bands grew so fast on me that before I noticed, they had become essentials. And IMO, they both reached a top a long time ago but have managed to keep up there since then: something that only three bands have managed to do for me (Opeth, Katatonia and Porcupine Tree). For that reason they're so special.

Katatonia and Opeth always were the best of the "dark metal" bands, especially in the 90s, along with Anathema up through Eternity. If you compare the new Katatonia to all the other stuff out there, its pretty good. But compared to their records up through LFDGD, it lacks the atmosphere those earlier records projected. What happened to all of Anders' melancholic leads? Where did all of the "chugging" come from? There was something about the simplicity and directness of the earlier records. Having said that, it is still better than 98% of all the other stuff that comes out of this genre. After listening to this track and the other tracks on the preview site, i think that this record sounds A LOT like Opeth...but that is far better than it sounding like some metalcore or nu-metal band anyday.

Katatonia I feel like are one of the best kept secrets in music. I played them for my friend who is into Dave Matthews and John Mayer and he was intrigued. From a poster above, I love this quote: "Their entire catalogue is really a soundtrack to solipsism." It's very true. Viva Emptiness, Great Cold Distance, just beautiful music. Porcupine Tree is not a far off comparison either.

Katatonia is one of the standard bearers of modern music, along with Opeth. Neither band can do any wrong in my book. They both present music as an art form, not just a means of cashing in for a quick buck.

I look forward to it. New song is excellent! To the top poster, the album was "Last fair deal gone down". Katatonia is great. They are moving way beyond their paradise lost influenced days. (BTW, anyone know what the "beef" was between those bands? something about katatonia slanging on one of PLs old albums?) I find I am more interested in what they do now then Paradise Lost. PL seems to have gotten in a rut with the last 2 albums. As much as people give em shit I found Icon - Symbol of Life the golden years. Each album was different and made me interested in what would be released next. Self-titled on seem to have stuck to one sounds. Still good songs but eh.

I do listening parties like that with my friends of bands that we both love. We did it with Opeth's watershed.

This is one of many albums I have been drooling with anticipation over. Katatonia are a really cool band with a unique sound. Opeth and Porcupine Tree also have both of those qualities. It is good to be a metalhead right now.

I did read on the the Q&A's on Katatonia's website that one of the band member's worst experience/show was at Milwaukee's MetalFest. Anyone know what happened there?

I've always loved Katatonia's first 2 albums, but i've found it hard to get into the rock albums they've released, not to say that they're bad, but just not my cup of tea. Hopefully this will turn me around - the cover art is some of the best i've seen in a long time, also.

I don't like Katatonia... and not because of the music but because of the people. Because Even though Opeth is a much bigger band, at least Mikael is somewhat down to earth...

I've been to parties with all these people several times. I ran into Mike once, and he'd smile, say hi (even though he doesn't know me), be generally pleasant and respectful of people. Then met Jonas and Anders several times as well, and they're just assholes. At first they don't even acknowledge your presence in the room, then they don't look you in the eye when you talk to them, and just brush you off as if you're some kind of moron when you just say what any normal person would say in the presence of common friends.

Jonas and Anders come off like the two most pretentious guys in all of Sweden, with their "cool" and smooth "we're so much better than you" demeanor. You have to look far and wide for more sleezy disgusting people than the two of them, honestly!

And I just listened to the song as well...

Nothing special. A more boring and less interesting version of what Opeth sounded like 3-4 records ago...
