SMASHING PUMPKINS To Give Away New 44-Song Album
- Sep. 16, 2009
|
|
SMASHING PUMPKINS mainman Billy Corgan has issued the following update: "I'm happy to finally announce the plans for the new SMASHING PUMPKINS album. "Recording began yesterday, September 15th, 2009 on the new record which will be entitled 'Teargarden by Kaleidyscope'. The album will feature 44 songs, four of which are now being recorded. My desire is to release a song at a time beginning around Halloween of this year, with each new release coming shortly after until all 44 are out. Each song will be made available absolutely for free, to anyone anywhere. There will be no strings attached. Free will mean free, which means you won't have to sign up for anything, give an email address, or jump through a hoop. You will be able to go and take the song or songs as you wish, as many times as you wish. "We will however sell highly limited edition EPs (of four songs each times 11), and details of how those EPs will be made available are still being worked out. Because the songs themselves will be free, the EPs will be more like collectors' items for the discerning fan who will want the art itself, along with the highest possible audio quality available. The EPs will be more like mini-box sets rather than your normal CD single. We may also offer other variations for sale, say for example a digital single with a demo version of a song. The commitment that is most important is the one I'm making to you: that the music of 'Teargarden by Kaleidyscope' will be available for free to everyone. All 44 songs: free for ALL. "When the entire album is finished, it will be compiled into a deluxe box set which will also be made available for sale. Those who have bought the EPs need not worry, as the box set will not be a recompilation of the limited edition pieces. "The story of the album is based on 'The Fool's Journey', as signified in the progress of the Tarot. It is my intention to approach this by breaking down the journey of our life here into four phases as made by these different characters; the Child, the Fool, the Skeptic, and the Mystic. "The music of 'Teargarden by Kaleidyscope' harkens back to the original psychedelic roots of the SMASHING PUMPKINS: atmospheric, melodic, heavy, and pretty. "I already have 53 songs written for the record, so I am quite confident that I already have much of the material that I would need to undertake such an extensive project. I am very committed to seeing this album through to its completion and very, very excited about the prospect of delivering new SMASHING PUMPKINS music to you in a unique and exciting way."
(Thanks: rous)

Nine Inch Nails did this first, and they didn't draw it out. But still, can't argue with free music.

It sounds like he is sticking to his guns, you fuckin numb nut. I don't even like Corgan or SPs, but it's pretty clear that he meant he isnt releasing albums in the standard fashion (LPs) anymore.
These aren't LPs.

I will be a first day "buyer", 11 times over....lmoa....Id be a first day "buyer" of almost anything that might be relatively good if its free. pumpkins, like most alt rock bands, tend to have multiple disc albums where you get 12 songs and 15 "experiments" so to speak. This way, youre not wasting money on "experiments" that you will only skip to get to the songs.

Honestly, you guys should applaud him, not complain. I'm not Smashing Pumpkins fan, but its obvious from the reports off the recent shows, and these strange developments in terms of a long concept album, released in a different way, that this is a guy who is willing to buck the trends of the mainstream system...... do something different (at least for the mainstream), and still have the media clout to get it out there to a large public.
This kind of change can only mean good things for us as metal fans. Its just another small step toward opening the eyes of people who have for too long been led to believe that "normal" is the only way......

Say what ya want about Billy, but at least give the man credit for still trying to make music as an art form. Not many bands/musicians go to the lengths that he has,to try and get music out there, in a new and creative way.

Sounds like an interesting concept. I'm not a Pumpkins fan but I like the fact that Corgan is trying something relatively new and innovative; I think NIN and Radiohead are the only other bands to attempt something similar to this. Hopefully the music is closer in style to early Pumpkins than the mid-to-later period material.

it would seem some of you don't even read the articles... Billy is releasing it download format OR 4 song EP's, then one big flippin' box set when all is said and done. but the box set will still differ somehow from the EP formats. hope that sums it up for those who don't want to read. To me, after Melloncollie & the Infinite Sadness, things went down hill. Iha was a key component to the music, as was Chamberlain. "Adore" didn't do it for me, Machina was so-so. Then there was Zwan, which was ok. Nothing they've done captures the energy and emotion that was Siamese Dream.

with some amount of success can attempt such a thing. because they can record it..... a band that has to work to live, can't pull this shit off, plus they 'll over charge for the limited edition CDS....
so if people pirate the thing anyway, just make it more expensive for your loyal fans..... GREAT IDEA !

It sounds like an interesting idea... unfortunately it has come a decade too late for me to even care. Plus, without Jimmy there's no way you can really call this music by the name of Smashing Pumpkins.

Once the bigger names will all help make this approach popular people will go no with the concept of free music. If your music is good and if people like your band they WILL find other ways to support you other than by buying a disc.
A lot of Metal bands, much less known, are already doing this. Encourage them, there's not much to lose, right?

I hope it's some really cool material.
At least by giving it away for free he's not going to be pressured into making music that 'sells'. Instead he can just do what he enjoys.

most appropriate title i've ever heard of! a mid 90's crying ALTERNATIVE has been now releasing multiple samplings of whiny drivel he can't even give away for free. 'atmospheric, melodic, heavy, and pretty.' kinda like sitting in starbucks sipping a venti caramel macchiato typing away on your computer pretending you're important. now playing: frasier season 2 dvd. look at me i'm stuck in the 90's saying i like something because everyone else does!
