the new album and I have mixed feelings abt it... I guess for one thing - no Layne and I never realized how much his voice is missed till now. Don't get me wrong, the album has some solid tunes and Will's voice really fits but still... Seems like Jerry does most of the singing on this which is ok, his voice has come a long way from Facelift so...
Maybe it would've been better if they changed their name.
I still love the band and the music they made in the past but I dunno... Guess I need to give it a few more go's. Not trying to ruin it for anyone, just giving my honest opinion.

Everyone's string shows wehn someone mentions how it's not the same as with Layne and it's NOT. They sound pretty good but you just cannot compare the two regardless of how much Cantrell wrote, Laynes voice made AIC what they are, er, were.
It's like saying the new Camero was the same as the old one. It's not. Sure, it's a camero, people like it and that's ok but to try and say it's BETTER or an exact replica of the classic is not right.

What I've heard from the album is really, really good. I can't wait to be able to sit down and soak it all in. No doubt that Layne is greatly missed though...he had one hell of a voice.
I think that because time has passed and Jerry had a history with Will, it shows a lot of respect and integrity from and for the band and the music.
Terrible analogy with the Camaro though! The original Camaro was nothing but a pretender and a sad copy of the real original pony car - the Mustang. The new Camaro is by far the best Camaro ever made but it is still a thrown together catch-up piece to the real deal.

Yehaaaww. So, you're a redneck dumbass! What roots? What the fuck are you blabbing about you crazy fuck? AIC was always a Seattle grunge band! This is album is close to AIC as it will ever get. Get with the times and stop living in the past! Layne died. They will never again make songs like Them Bones or Man In The Box.
And with the shit you post, you sound like a hater rather than a fan..

I don't give a shit what music Jerry listened to. The music he listened isn't the same music that he makes, dumbass. And AIC were a grunge band! Read some books "Grunge Is Dead" for an example.. maybe you'll learn something.

Definitely missing that tortured, darker edge that Staley brought to previous albums, but still a collection of really good tunes. "Check My Brain", "When the Sun Rose Again", and "Black Gives Way to Blue" are like nothing AIC ever would have written before, but "Private Hell" sounds like it could have slipped right off of Dirt.
I'm actually mighty impressed by how the band simultaneously captures the spirit of AIC past while grinding a new path for themselves. I hope they stay around for awhile.
Folks should give this a chance. Very, very good.

Alice in Chains are doing this for all the right reasons, if you check out their EPK or any interviews it makes sense. Who gives a shit what you think? Why not listen to what Jerry and Sean have to say about it first? This entire album is for Layne and it has some really deep stuff on it. Even without Layne it is mych better than 99.9 % of the shit out there today anyway, so keep it coming.

Ummmmm...... "very little attention in the 90s"???? "Rarely played on MTV back in the day"???
I seem to recall "Dirt" hitting #6 on the Billboard charts. "Jar of Flies" and the self-titled both debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts. The fucking MTV UNPLUGGED debuted at #3. Videos for "Man in the Box", "Would?", "Rooster", "Grind", "Down in a Hole", "We Die Young", "Again", "Angry Chair"..... what am I missing? Ummm... "Heaven Beside You".......

He is right about one thing: AIC was not a grunge band! They were a more straight up hard rock/metal band but the record company "repackaged" them to fit in with the grunge movement. Check out the early video, they were a leather and spandex type deal.
For example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTKwIXUDIGs&feature=related

Is so south and knows so much about what chains really is and where they come from....I bet he thinks that the South won the Civil war too.
However, I do agree that Alice in Chains is not grunge. Your persistence on how true of a fan you are, is quite pathetic. "I was a fan of Metallica when I was the womb..."
Thats awesome man, go back to your 410 shotgun...

I always considered AiC a metal band. They were much more talented the grunge bands beside them. Jerry Cantrell is a hideously underrated guitarist. so he doesn't show off and play a billion notes a second... that's not his style... it's slow, heavy, and it steals your soul... grinds the fucker up and spits it back at you in bloody pieces... AiC has had a huge influence on the metal scene.
Has anyone heard Opeth's cover of Would? not bad at all.
Long live Alice in Chains Old and New.
