GENE SIMMONS On Previous Bandmembers: 'When You Defile KISS, You Should Be Thrown Out'
- Sep. 24, 2009
|
|
Adam Graham of Detroit News recently conducted an interview with KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons. A few excerpts from the chat follow below. On the band's current lineup vs. the original lineup: "(People say) family is the most important thing. Actually, no, it's not. Love, respect and discipline is the most important thing; and if your father is a drunk and abuses the family and makes it dysfunctional, kick (him) out. Blood is thicker than water? No it's not. Self-respect, discipline and honesty is the most important thing. If your mother or father or brother or sister is a drug addict (kind of) loser, toss him out. It's called tough love. "Love yourself and respect yourself enough to have pride in what you do. Love and respect and have pride for the band you're in. When we get up on stage, that's holy ground. This is electric church, and no one on that stage — me or anyone else — wears the makeup and platform heels by some kind of birthright. This ain't Europe; just 'cause your dad was king doesn't make you the king. You've got to earn it. And when you defile KISS, you should be thrown out." On the controversial KISS casket: "They sold out, of course. You can't get another one anywhere. I don't even have one anymore. I sent the last one to the family of (deceased PANTERA guitarist) Dimebag Darrell ( Abbott). The last will and testament of his family is that he be buried in a KISS casket. (I sent) the one I had right here in my museum." On KISS merchandising: "How cool is it to walk in and see KISS Mr. Potato heads, or KISS M&Ms? Come on. We love the STONES and we love U2 and RADIOHEAD, but I don't want to see Thom Yorke's face on an M&M." On KISS' live philosophy: "If you bring your eyes to a concert, we want a visual boom, a visual overload. And you should get that, for (heaven's) sake. You're paying as much for a concert ticket as some down payments on cars. It's nuts." On KISS' tour with AEROSMITH earlier this decade: "When we both decided to go out, (headliners were) going to be flip-flopped every other night, but we immediately stepped up and said, 'Don't worry about ego, we'll go on first every night, not a problem. And we promise you, people will forget you were there.' " On a favorite Detroit memory: "We were backstage getting ready (at Cobo) and we were doing photo sessions, and I was in full makeup, and I had to go to the bathroom before we went out (on stage). And a really pretty girl walked in there, and I said, 'Sorry, miss, you're in the wrong bathroom.' She said, 'No no no, I wanted to give you a present before you get up on stage.' And I'm going, 'I love Detroit.' " On being Gene Simmons: "It's good to be me. People say life is short and all that; still, you can live big, you can live a full life if you get off your (behind) and do something. I believe a lot of people go to their grave and on their headstones it might say, 'I woulda, I coulda, I shoulda.' On my tombstone it's going to say 'Thank you and good night.' I wanna go up in flames. That's KISS." Read more from Detroit News.

I mean, I don't wanna be buried in something like that, if at all, but c'mon . . . if that's what Darrell wanted, I am glad that he got it.
Nobody should ever die like that. We were all robbed of a fantastic musician in the prime of his life. He had so much music left that we will never get. His family is in my prayers.

this is one of the most ridicules, hypocrital, and typical Gene interviews going. he speaks of past members defiling KiSS, yet in the next breath talks about KiSS M&M's. And the quote of Thom Yorke not being on an M&M....I don't think he, or Jimi Hendrix, or John Lennon wanted to be on an M&M. A real musician would scoff at that. Make your $$ on good music, not the whoring of your band's brand...he makes it sound like other musicians who are really creative, working on their music, are fools....isn't it suppossed to be about Music, and performance FIRST!?....and people buy into his crap.
Ace might have been a F Up, maybe not THE best guitarist, but he was at least about the Rock....and what's wrong with a little Sex & Drugs anyhow, as long as their still Sex & drugs, I can do without the rock n roll. (I'm kidding!...I think).

"I don't want to see Thom Yorke's face on an M&M."
When I read this interview early this morning, I figured Bmouth would highlight the quote it did. I really wish interviewers would stop asking Gene and Paul to rehash this stuff, but it is what it is. The bottom line is that the band, Ace and (from what I understand) Peter are all happy and doing well.
Sonic Boom and Anomaly = Pure bliss for this longtime fan.

I think the first paragraph was right on, even though it may not be popular....
There ARE some people who get into Rock n' Roll just for the lifestyle---drugs, booze and women. Most of these people can't keep it under control and they eventually self destruct. They lose all sense of professionalism, lose what skills they have as musicians and can barely function in real life, let alone a stage... I've even been in situations with musicians like this..and quite frankly, nobody wants to be around them, they create a bad vibe and they become the weak link that everyone is always worrying about screwing up or not showing up.... As much as I love some of the previous Kiss line-ups, I can totally see where Gene is coming from.

Read your book Sex, Kiss, And Money and I gotta say I agree with a lot of what you said, but you are delusional on some points like what I, being a guy, would do on a "typical"(WTF IS "typical anyway???) day I care about my hair to use the best shampoo and conditioner on it, and I wouldn't shake my dick at my current woman either before OR after the shower I would, however smile at her if she happens to be in the room with me hoping she would get in the shower with me to "shake my willy" on her own, even if she comes in to wash my back I would be happy and grateful for that. Then I would probably go out for a run and go to school at the local "entertainment university" we have here learning the recording arts, or something worthwhile.
And yeah you're right about people with substance abuse problems but the thing is if you solicit the "services" of a hooker like you are suggeting in your book, there's about a 100% chance that she has a substance abuse problem too and has to resort to selling her body to satisfy it, so guess what buddy??? YOU ARE CONTRIBUTING TO THE PROBLEM!!!
HELLO!!!
Thank You.

The fact that Kiss is actually on M&M's means only one thing: he won. Plain and simple. Gene and Paul worked their asses off to get where they are. If Wal Mart wants to pay them the big bucks to hawk Kiss merch, then they would be morons to do it. There isn't a signed musician on Earth who wouldn't. Tell me why a t-shirt is ok and trading card aren't? What is a greatest hits collection other a cash grab? What is a tour? What is a live DVD? It's capitalism my friend. And Gene is right. Nobody would buy Radiohead M&M's or toothpaste. But they have and will by Kiss. Why? Because they're fucking cartoon characters. Always were. You buy Kiss M&M's for the same reason you buy X-Men fruit snacks. Most of you aren't old enough to remember, but Reggie Jackson had his own candy bar.

On his rationale behind opening for Aerosmith, what a crock. $cab Ki$$ was coming off the Rock the Empty Seats tour, a financial calamity. There's no way Aerosmith would ever agree to opening for a watered down impostering band like $cab Ki$$. They opened for Aerosmith because they HAD to.
Mean Gene is constantly ragging on Ace and Peter, about crap that happened 20 years ago. You would think that whatever Gene has accomplished since then would be at the forefront of his ego. Evidently, he must not have accomplished anything, because he's constantly going back instead of forward.
Ace made Kiss a respectable band. Gene has spent the last 20 years making it a joke. Go buy your Tater Head dolls little girls and boys !!

A scab is generally someone who replaces the original worker, (From wikipedia : a person who works despite strike action or against the will of other employees.
Ace and Peter are not happy other people are using their faces. (They were not to bright when they cashed in.)
I consider Tommy and Eric scabs due to this reasoning. Were they to get their own makeup, different story. Then Eric would be a great drummer, Tommy would still be playing like ace and the CD is still KISS ripping off their own history, as I hear parts of Mr. Speed, Take It Off and a few others.
Pity KISS and Ace don't get along. Mash together the two CDs and ya have one great one.

I think "Haymaker" hit the nail on the head - in typical fashion, Simmons comes off sounding like a fat, bloated idiot!
"How cool is it to walk in and see KISS Mr. Potato heads, or KISS M&Ms?" - To me, this is the essence of how out-of-touch Gene Simmons is with his fans! For the record, Gene, it actually isn't cool at all! Maybe it's great for you because it makes you more money, but most of the KISS fans, even the diehards, think it's pathetic and sad!

is the KING of rationalization. He's overly insecure really, always telling us how great he is, how many BJ's he's received. If he's like this in real life, he must be tough to hang with, a major blow hard...he has one thing to prop him up, he is rich....I'd have more respect for him if he said "look, I'm near 60, KiSS is coming to a halt soon, I'm going to ride this Brand, make my last bit of $$ of this, cuz its going away soon, I'll secure my family's finances for 4 generations."..
.then fine, admit you aren't about the music, but stop throwing a band like Radiohead under the bus cuz they may lack that "Rock Star" charisma...but what they lack their, they make up with at least being true to their fans & music. (My feelings for the band, good or bad is irrelevant)...really, must every band sell M&M, where white makeup & Spit blood. It was fun for Kiss, but pride yourself in that spectacle, but you are what you are.....God Forbid too if KiSS ever strayed from the script live, same notes, night after night.

Where?
I'm stoked Anomaly entered at #27, but Sonic Boom isn't even out yet.
Modern Day Delilah is at #11 on Billboard's Rock National Airplay Chart ... Outer Space never even charted.
Also, the Rock The Nation tour FOLLOWED the tour with Aerosmith ... not the other way around.
Anyway, I don't think Gene's comments are that bad. They're certainly not as critical as Paul's comments today. I just wish all parties would move on ... including interviewers. The subject has been beaten to death already.

I'm not going to take sides.
I was not there to see if it was Ace and Peter who were unreasonable and wanted more compensation for less effort that was fair.
I was not there to see if it was Gene and Paul who were unreasonable and wanted more effort for less compensation that was fair.
This hall of fame situation can go one of two ways -
- Like Van Halen, where the bad blood between band members results in the band and the fans cheated out of what was supposed to be a great night and career highlight for the band.
or
- Like Metallica, where fans were treated to the current band along with Jason who had been in the band for a long time and was a major part of their success.
My opinion - Kiss is what it is today and no-one besides Gene and Paul are going to change that.
Follow the example of the Unplugged gig.
A one off with Ace and Peter sitting in for a couple of songs to celebrate what Gene Paul Ace and Peter DID do together and leave it for another time to bitch at each other if they absolutely can't get on with their lives without slinging shit.
It's one night.
Then go back to their own separate careers the next day.
In a perfect world they would all be happy for each other and want to make the most of it for all concerned, bands and fans alike.

If Gene really meant it as a gesture of good will, he would have donated it anonymously. But he wanted his name attached to Dime's death so he could reap the publicity - that's why he keeps bringing it up, over and over again. THAT DOESN'T MAKE HIM A GOOD PERSON, IT MAKES HIM A VAMPIRE - using someone's death to forward his own name!
You KISS-dorks are so blind in your admiration for KISS that you can't even see when someone is using a tragedy to make a few bucks! Pathetic!!

Respect is a two way street. Maybe if Peter and Ace had been given the respect they deserved and were allowed to be full contributors on Psycho Circus things would be different. On the other hand, I don't understand how Peter and Ace could just throw away being in KISS. I saw them in Saratoga Springs, NY and Ace was so f**king drunk he was staggering around stage and missing chords all over the place. So, in that instance I definetly think Gene is correct, as a fan, you throw down your money expecting to see a quality show, and as a fan you deserve to have a band performing at their best. Not a drunk idiot. Just hit a local bar on a Saturday night, and you can see one of those for free. Well. anyhow enough with the ranting.... Ace says he is clean now, and I hope he is. On the positive side, Anomaly kicks ass, and I can't wait for Sonic Boom, and to see KISS on tour in October. I've always looked at KISS as an evolution, and haven't limited my thinking to the original four members. My favorite lineup, which was the shortest lived was Gene, Paul, Carr, and Frehley. I like Peter, but as a drummer he couldn't hold a candle(or drumstick for that matter) to either of the Eric's.
