MAX CAVALERA: 'I Don't Think SEPULTURA Is Doing All That Good These Days' - Oct. 3, 2009
Max Cavalera (SOULFLY, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, SEPULTURA) was a featured guest on the September 19, 2009 edition of "The Classic Metal Show". The chat is now available for streaming using the audio player below.

When asked if he thinks SEPULTURA's reputation is being tarnished by the band's current lineup — which doesn't include Max or his brother, Igor (drums) — Max said, "Well, it's not really up to me to say that. I think I left it up to the fans to decide, and I think they are showing their feelings, because I don't think SEPULTURA is doing all that good these days. There's no original members [left], and it's just kind of hard to believe in a band like that, because everybody that was in it originally has left. But what can I say?! I'm pleased with what I'm doing. Playing with Igor [in CAVALERA CONSPIRACY] is great, and the way SOULFLY is coming together is great, so I just keep doing my thing."

"The Classic Metal Show" can be heard every Saturday night between 9:00 p.m. EST and 3:00 a.m. EST at www.cmsradio.net.

In a recent interview with Fangoria.com, Max was asked baout the songwriting process for the next SOULFLY album. "[It's coming along] little by little. Right now we're just getting some of the ideas together with some of the songs I composed while on tour over the past two years. We've got bits and pieces, lot's of riffs and things, but we'll begin seriously working on it at the beginning of November when we get off the road. We'll get right into the studio and start recording . . . Recording will be November and December, so [the release] should be the beginning of next year. That's about how long it'll take to get the mixing, mastering, and artwork done. We're recording in California this time, and it will be mixed in England. Once all the parts are in place we'll set a release date. It's still a little bit of time."

Regarding whether there will be a second CAVALERA CONSPIRACY album, Max said, "I don't have any plans right now, but maybe later on. I did some shows with that and they were awesome. We did some shows in Europe and Japan with really great crowd reaction. They were really into the album and they know it a lot more now. The way the CAVALERA operates is that we do some shows here and there — not often but for special occasions. We like to keep it like that, and it's cool to get together with Igor [CAVALERA CONSPIRACY/ex-SEPULTURA drummer] for awhile and then get right back to SOULFLY."

Please no reunion. Andreas Kisser has a HUGE ego and it wouldn't work out.

As Igor said, he doesn't need a reunion. Cavalera Conspiracy is his reunion.

As a matter of fact, Cavalera Conspiracy should re-record the Sepultura classics they play live at shows and release them as bonus tracks for the next CC album.

He was ASKED a QUESTION, which he then ANSWERED. It's not Max's blog, for Christ's sake.

Hopefully this doesn't break out into some stupid debate about the merits of his opinion; there are plenty of reasons to hate Max, but answering arbitrary questions in an interview isn't one of them.

Current Sepultura would be a much more appreciated band if it wasn't for the legacy that was left for them to carry. But I have to agree with Max. Arise, BTR and even Schizo are too high standards and Chaos/Roots, though not so good (imho) are undoubtly better and more creative than the newer ones. Plus they also got that Cavalera feeling on it which anybody can recognize.

This being said, I must now tell you that Sepultura @ Rock in Rio 2004 (no Max) was the most insane fuckin concert I've ever attended to. That shit was unbelievable.

Many people forget that Max also rode nu-metal's coattail with Soulfly for quite some time, only when it became acceptable again did he return to thrash.

With that in mind I still think that Sepultura was only Sepultura with the Cavalera brothers, even though "Roots..." buried that band for me.

Why the decision to get Derrick Green was reached is beyound me. I've never liked what he did in Sepultura and his interpretations of the old songs are also pretty bad. Why they kept him all these years is also beyound me.

I think Max and Igor need to go back to Sepultura with Rizzo in tow and do a proper thrash album as if it were 1988 again!

Sure, if you want to get technical, except Andreas has been in the band for like 20 years now. And Paulo has been there from pretty much the beginning. Hell at this point both of them have been in Sepultura longer than Max was. Max should just stop this silly bullshit and these lies, him and Mustaine are both coming across like clowns. Besides, after the first album Soulfy was shit too.

whoever that piece of shit was that said 'ya think'?, man fuck off you freak. as for max, he can fuck off too. CC was a throwaway piece of thrash with zero melody. 'a-lex' is the best album Sepultura have conjured since Arise in my opinion. forget the concept, the thrash on there blows away two big hacks like megadeth. that's what thrash is supposed to sound like. it's one of the best albums of 2009 and far more inspired than anything max has put out in the last decade. true sepultura might not be selling as many albums but so what? the music is still great so fuck off max.

Well at least Max is more cool about it than Ozzy "I'll sue you for replacing me in the band that I tried to quit several times" Osbourne.

There were no winners in the Sepultura break-up. The bright spots is that Max finally woke up and started "playing" good music again with Dark Ages, Conquer & reuniting with his brother for (the no longer a one off project?) Cavalera Conspiracy.

However, Napalm Death (one of Max's favorite bands) have no original members and they are at the top of their game... album sales be damned. If anything, they have pretty much the same line-up (-Jesse RIP) as when they were at their popularity peak.

Sepultura has always been a painfully mediocre band. The only reason they got big is because they were a novelty act: "Oh look, how cute, a Brazilian metal act! I didn't know they played metal down there in the jungle!" That being said, A-Lex actually is a decent record; not great, but as good as anything they ever did with the Cavalera brothers.

Sepultura is no more. Why try to carry on with the same band. Just rename it and do what you gotta do. I have tried very hard to "like" Sepultura's albums after Max left, but they all are terrible. The vibe is gone, and it's just random musicians trying to make something fit. Just let the past go and start something fresh.

as a matter of fact A-Lex is FAR better than Conquer in my opinion... or even than Dark Ages. Max tends to be a trend slut, he started with the new-metal stuff which was great, then when the wave died he spoiled the band and again hopped on the new trend. that sucks, although the music is good.

are great records. These days Sep really doesn't need Max nor Igor, and I think Igor's happy being out of Sep too isn't he?

Besides, as much as I love Beneath & Arise, they were still a derivative album, not innovative. I think Dante and A-Lex are innovative.

It doesn't matter if Sepultura aren't that good these days because they weren't all that good during the Roots era, which had the original line-up. If the original line up were still together then every album from 1998-2009 would of sounded like Soulfly albums.

Soulfly has kinda sucked since their 3rd album and sep have ducked since nation.

And to the guy hacking on the hootie and the blowfish comment, you're either completley retarded or don't know your soulfly history. It was a line off the first soulfly disc, not that guy saying anything in regards to anyone in these two bands.

One more thing cc was alright, better than soulfly and sep, but I think Joe duplantier had a bit to do with that.
