MEGADETH's MUSTAINE: 'I Look At The Guitar As A Weapon, Not A Paintbrush'
- Oct. 3, 2009
|
|
Scott Kara of NZHerald.co.nz recently conducted an interview with MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below. On whether he has any real regrets about what he has done over the years: "The only thing that is regrettable is when people die and you don't have a chance to say everything you need to say before they pass away. And I'm getting older and people who are in my age group, they're getting older too. That's why I've really been trying to make right with the people I've had differences with over the years because people die." On his guitar playing: "A lot of people play guitar very passively and strum it like Roberta Flack, like [he breaks into mock singing] 'Killing me softly ...'. But me, I just like to punch the guitar in the stomach and if the little bastard gets out of my hands at the end of the day then he's won his freedom. I look at the guitar as a weapon, not a paintbrush. I use my guitar to make a living and like I say, 'Killing is my business.'" On MEGADETH's current lead guitarist, Chris Broderick: "He's really shy. The guy is as big as a horse and he can play guitar circles around anybody. I'm pretty well regarded as a guitar player but I gotta say this guy is better. He's made me a better player. Not only did he pick up my style, but he did it faster and closer to the true style I have than any other guitar player I've worked with." Read the entire interview at NZHerald.co.nz.

Endgame btw is a sick album. I think those that don't like it are either jealous guitar players or people that have always hated Megadeth and Dave's quotes.

"I look at the guitar as a weapon, not a paintbrush. I use my guitar to make a living and like I say, 'Killing is my business.'"
That’s because most people – artists, we’ll say – want to CREATE something with their art…create something beautiful. Looks like in contrast you want to use art as a weapon which says SOOOOOOO much about who you are and confirms who you’ve always been. There’s no beauty inside you, David. And that’s tragically sad. But at this point is anyone really surprised by this?
That’s a rhetorical question, by the way.

I'm starting a petition - sack Dave and get Marty back to play with Chris. Dave can do just vocals and walk round shaking a tambourine the rest of the time.
Who's with me on this one?

and most of you hang off it. Another priceless Dave interview. He creates THRASH with his AXE, why would there be any beauty in that? Dave is a master creator with his weapons. The chemistry is top notch right now and I would hate for Dave to walk away. He's got to get his fire back and end this one more record talk. With the new and HIGHLY improved Megadeth, how can you walk away from that? Chris has the best chance at money with Megadeth. I could think of many more reasons to keep Dave going.

If Dave thinks that, maybe he should listen to a wider variety of music. I'd listen to the latest The Mars Volta album over any Megadeth record, any day of the week. Metal is cool until you realize just how stupidly serious it can be.

I don't expect a non-musician layman like you to understand the beauty of playing the guitar and writing music. Even metal music is beautiful...if you consider part of the definition of the word meaning the ultimate in goodness. How could you not see metal that way?
There are several reasons why that could be, the most obvious of which is that you're just a nobody fan without a real clue about music.
It's okay, though. This board caters to your type. No worries.
What kind of flowers would you like, sir? Tulips, roses or, y'know, they've got a special going on carnations right now...

What a stale and lifeless band Mustaine has accrued for himself.
Anyone who's studied music or been around 'music students' for more than 10 minutes will appreciate the utter mediocrity of Chris Broderick. "Mastering all aspects" of an instrument is something any monkey can do. "Mastering all aspects" is what gets you a session gig. Megadeth is a rockstar gig; for TALENT like Marty Friedman.
... And don't get me started on Shawn Drover. That guy's drumming is terrible.
Hands up who STILL misses the classic 90s lineup...
Endgame is an excellent record though; at least Mustaine is back on his feet after the abominable 'United Abominations'
And artjunkie, You fail. Anyone who knows anything about music knows that Megadeth is a brilliant band that transcends genre limitations through its originality and virtuosity.

You know he just said that line about the guitar being a weapon to impress metalheads, right? Mustaine has written mostly melodic stuff in the last ten years, and is just getting back to all out thrashing. Sure most of it was pretty simple Maiden-esque leads, but he does understand the importance of a melodic line.

It doesn't matter how techinical or how fast you are at the guitar. Most general people listen to the song for what it gives them. If it sounds good to them they like it. Just because you can play 1000 notes a minute or sweep like cinderella doesn't mean that it's going to sound good. Some of the most simple songs are the best ones. That to me is genius. Dimebag played with emotion that's what made his so great

---------------------------------------
wow. did you just talk praise the mars volta for not being "stupidly serious"? are you shitting me? as much as metal takes itself so seriously, nothing is as pretentious as indie prog or whatever the fuck the mars volta plays. seriously if your example of a band that doesnt take itself seriously is the mars volta, then fuck, no one, not even manowar, takes itself seriously at all.

Say what you will, critic boys. "Endgame" is an awesome album and will be remembered as such.
Don't be so upset that someone who is maturing in his adulthood is kicking the asses of your little boy bands! It happens in all spheres of music, art, & even science: somebody who's been in the game longer wipes the floor with the kiddies.
Dave's right, Chris B. is a heckuva guitarist.

I dont get why so many people talk about the 1 million notes a second bashing???
yeah they do that on "this day we fight"...and it is sick...same on a few other songs, but there are a lot of midpaced and well written songs on the cd as well.
its a good mix of hte oldschool and the countdown era.
this is the New era of megadeth...20 something years later and must successs later mustain still delivers
we should be happy that a band in the position so show real metal to the masses actually did!
