PAUL STANLEY Says KISS Is Bigger Than Its Members - Oct. 5, 2009
The Pulse of Radio reports: With a new album in stores, "Sonic Boom", and legions of fans turning out for their current Alive! 35 tour, KISS is flying high. Recently group frontman Paul Stanley addressed the fact that the band is trying to recapture the magic of their 1975 "Alive!" album without the group's original lineup. In particular, Stanley was asked about fans being upset that Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer have been sporting the costumes previously worn by Ace Frehley and Peter Criss.

Stanley explained, "That there are people who take issue with it is all well and good. To say the vast majority don't agree would be an understatement. The fact is, there are four iconic figures that are what KISS is. To change that because someone is no longer in the band cheats me, because I busted my butt for 35 years making this what it is. So why would I let somebody deny me and the majority of the fans what they expect? That's what we owe to people; the representation and embodiment of what KISS has been since the beginning."

Stanley added that if he left the group, he wouldn't be upset if someone took on his persona. He explained, "I would hope it would happen. It would only affirm that the band is bigger than any of us. That the band is about an ideal, about a point of view, about a way to deliver a show, about a philosophy that puts the fans first. I'm not delusional enough to think I couldn't be replaced."

Great bands are about people, flesh & Blood, musicians that make up the band, not a "concept", a philosophy. Replace Paul & its a tribute band. you can't replace paul...its all rationalization for their next step...and others that say "haters buzz off", this isn't a "hater" responce. I think its a logical responce to a silly concept that bands are just brands, or "points of view". Especially in a band like KiSS where each member was widely known. They might have been covered in make up but THEIR personalities came through, on stage & in the music....Ace had charisma, he fit KiSS. Bruce K was a bland fill in, no matter how much better a guitar technician.

Paul knows there is no way anyone would follow Kiss if he left. If he really believed he could be replaced he wouldnt be saying this bullshit.

with you 100%. Kiss is for when you are a kid and Disney world overwhelms you but then you graduate to metal with articulate playing and Kiss becomes kinda corny and embarrassing.

That was a pretty cool response by Paul. Most bands are different--Kiss is all about performance, and I'm sure they'd love to see Kiss in some incarnation long after all the original band members are dead. Gwar said the same thing in a VH1 interview a while back: people could just don the costumes after the originals quit and Gwar will simply live forever, as stated in their cute little mythology thing.

Us peons in the working world bust our butts everyday only to watch other people get the credit (especially our bosses). We're used to people denying us what we expect (a raise most importantly!). So don't give me that crap about how you are for the people!

They haven't done the makeup 35 years. From 73 - 83, with the last 2/3 years NOT the original designs. Then again from 96 - present, with rotating drummers and a different guitarist from 2002.

That makes 23 years with makeup, and 21 or so with the current designs.

Once again, I wait for the day they replace themselves, then Eric and Tommy are replaced again, then there is second third generation Demon and Starchild. And so on, and so on etc.....

I heard a live soundboard recording from a tour stop just days ago.

THEY SOUNDED LIKE SHYT!

Stop trying to pretend it's the original KISS. Take off the makeup, get rid of the 70's costumes and just come out and play.

I'd have a hell of alot more respect if you did. Your new employees are not Peter and Ace. Stop pretending like they are.

anyone is replaceable. it's just that when you 're so prolific and iconic, you could only substitute your self with a total clone. A mime. Bands that have replaced deceased frontmen with simillar sounding ones. ie the doors, thin lizzy were not the real thing but came close at least at sounding like the original bands. (a bit of a sacrilege - but a nice enough tribute) bands that tried to do something with a vocalist that didn't resemble the original. Ie queen getting PR instead of say Valensia, just sounded like a totally different band and failed commercially (when trying to release a new album).

People dig nostalgia. You should dig it too and only revisit the past and soldier on making records if you can add something to your catalog, with grace ie like kiss did. Sonic boom might not have A HUGE HIT, but it's all solid kiss sounding songs !

I loved most of the bands you mentioned, but now, no one cares, because they don't want to see the band with a million different people. There's a reason why Foghat or Molly Hatchet aren't heard of anymore. No one knew the original members for the most part anyhow.
