Report: Record Labels Sue GUNS N' ROSES For Copying Songs - Oct. 5, 2009
Reuters reports: Two independent record labels sued U.S. rock band GUNS N' ROSES for $1 million, claiming the group used portions of two songs by a German musician on their last album "Chinese Democracy".

British label Independiente and the U.S. arm of Domino Recording Company, who own the licensing rights to songs by German electronic musician Ulrich Schnauss, allege that singer Axl Rose and GUNS N' ROSES band members and album producers copied portions of two of Schnauss' songs — "Wherever You Are" and "A Strangely Isolated Place" (hear audio below) — for a song used on the band's last GN'R album called "Riad N' the Bedouins".

After all the money and time that went into that album, they're now being sued for copying someone elses work?

Uh, the GN'R "theft" is about 3 seconds long and it's a preset on the synthesizer they used. That's like the Beatles trying to sue Cannibal Corpse because they used one of the same guitar chords in one of their songs.

there is a 5 second keyboard loop at the beginning of "wherever you are" that is similar to Riad, but sue worthy, I don't think so. Chinese Democracy = Best album of this decade

I can hear some similarities. Such as the embedded drum loop at about 2:30 in the song. From what I understand about musical IP, it seems doubtful to me that it'd hold up in court, though.

I love the older GnR,
but I also think ChiDem is absolutely fantastic.
It has grown on me, and every time I listen, I hear new aspects of the music. To me, that's a big part of the musical experience.

Probably it should be named something other than GnR though. Maybe Axl had legal reasons for using the brand.

I have to admit that I rather like Ulrich's music, and this is my first introduction to it. It's chill. Sometimes chill is good.

Thanks Blabbermouth!

I think the intro to A Strangely Isolated Place sounds very similar to the music in the Forest Temple in Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Maybe that german guy needs to watch his back for the Nintendo-people now!

It will be ok, because Axl's master plan is to sue China if they ever adopt a democratic government............He plans to license Democracy to each individual citizen of China with plans to be renewed in a similar fashion as software licensing.

Axl tried to sue Hinder for saying that their song Homecoming Queen sounded like Sweet Child O Mine (which it kinda does but there are differences)---and now he's getting sue for taking away a 5 second sound clip that could've been 100% coincidental. What the hell? haha.

Domino is quite a big label overseas and made tons of money from Franz Ferdinand, Clinic, and many others.

Ulrich Schnauss was definitely ripped off. This is a big blow to the GNR camp for not getting clearances before putting the shittiest album ever out.
