OZZY OSBOURNE: I Can't Stand The Title 'Heavy Metal'
- Oct. 5, 2009
|
|
Simon Greene of ScotlandOnSunday recently conducted an interview with legendary heavy metal singer Ozzy Osbourne. A few excerpts from the chat follow below. On addiction: Ozzy: "Rehabs are not there to cure you. You'll never get cured from addiction, but they'll tell you what's wrong and suggest how you can arrest the symptoms. It's a terrible affliction and thank God people have recognized it as being an illness." "Some people never stop, like when George Best died, he had fucking liver transplants, the whole nine yards, and he still continued to drink. Alcohol, drugs, tobacco, it's all the same, it's something to fix the way you feel, but it started to turn on me. As time went on my tolerance got bad, I could hardly hold anything, I'd drink and then have to have another drink to get me back up again, so by nine in the morning I was done. "That was when I used to have a sniff of the old powder and get me back on my feet again. At first it was fun to do, but then it became not fun anymore and I had to do that just to get to what I thought was normal. I'm becoming awake again now, you know?" On the wake-up call that made him realize he had a problem: Ozzy: "One time we had a kids' party, one of the kids' birthdays, and Sharon [ Ozzy's wife] said to me, 'You fucking should have seen yourself yesterday,' and I went, 'What's wrong with me, I was all right, playing with the kids, whatever.' And she kept saying, 'Do you want to see yourself?' and she put a video in the machine and I was fucking freaked out. I thought, 'Maybe it's true.'" On being on the receiving end of death threats from both Satanist and Christian groups during the early 1970s heyday of his former band BLACK SABBATH: Ozzy: "I've had numerous threats on my life. They were gonna shoot me one night. I go to this gig and there's this strange vibe going down backstage and all of a sudden this cop walks in and goes, 'We've had it from a very good source that this guy's gonna try and shoot you tonight, what do you want to do?' I went, 'Well, they're in so if I don't go on they're gonna get fucking pissed off. They're not gonna shoot me when I'm onstage, I don't think'. I thought I'd just move around a bit more, use Tony, my assistant, as a shield." On his early solo "Diary Of A Madman" tour in 1982 when he would encourage his audience to fling offal, gore and meat onstage and would conduct the mock hanging of a midget" Ozzy: "It was all in fun. He'd say, 'Where's the fucking toilet, Oz?' and I'd come over and put my hand over the WO and go, 'Look, MEN'. But he couldn't open the door to get out so women would be smacking him around. It's sad because he committed suicide, he overdosed on Prozac." On starting his own annual travelling festival, Ozzfest, which has given then-rising acts such as SYSTEM OF A DOWN, SLIPKNOT and LINKIN PARK a leg-up: Ozzy: "I've often had people go, 'I bet you're happy with the resurgence of heavy metal.' Well, number one, I can't stand the title, heavy metal. If it was heavy rock, it'd be better. But you can't say that the bands now sound anything like the bands in the 1970s. But what I'm happy about, I gave a platform for a lot of these kids to do gigs. The record industry is fucking dying, so what a lot of these kids will do is have a recording thing on the bus and make a record through the night as they're travelling and sell it at the gig." On "The Osbournes" reality-TV show: Ozzy: "It was an experiment. I looked at it being an extended version of 'Cribs', that's basically what it was. Believe me, we could have gone on with it. I didn't want to do it. I haven't really watched any of the shows, I've seen bits of it. I can't stand to see myself on TV. They're very ruthless people, it's a very cut-throat business." On the strangest thing he's snorted: Ozzy: "Snuff in a pub. A quick line of snuff, the next minute I coughed and a big fucking black bubble of shit come out of my mouth. I thought my fucking brain had melted."

I've read on here in a long time. First, who was this midget who had the misfortune of tagging along with him?
Second, is he really talking about using Tony Iommi as a bullet shield?
Third, the "snuff in a pub" quote is absolute gold. I'm saving that one.

He turned his back on METAL fans over two decades ago, why does anyone care about anything this blithering meat puppet has to say? If I want to hear bad wiggery hard rock, then great, I'll reach for some subpar Ozzy album. But no, that will never happen.
Ozzy without Sabbath = 100% irrelevant.

Well i cannot associate with any of these things and the fact that he's an addict doesn't impress me much. He and his family, are lowlife white trash and should not be put on the pedestral and idolized but instead be set as examples for avoidance as their influence demoralizes today's youth !

Ozzy, of all fucking people, can't stand the title "heavy metal"? He and three other guys invented it, and he doesn't like what it's called? There's no other explanation. This is one of the final signs of the apocolypse.

Land of the Lost Horizon...Iommi himself said he never considered Sabbath to be a "heavy metal" band. So take it for what it's worth. As for Ozzy, always was a class act when he's not being blamed for the stunts Sharon pull. People like to blame Oz for shit but he had nothing to do w/ the Maiden debacle and in suing Iommi's camp, he's attempting to keep Sabbath at a quarter share for each original member. His last "great" album was No More Tears but frankly I find it impossible to not love his shit since then regardless.

... was first used to describe Jimmy Hendrix's music by a New York reporter. "It's like Heavy Metal raining from the sky", I belive the excact phrase was. But everybody who's got halv a brain knows it really was developed by bands such as Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple, Motörhead and Van Halen in the 70's. Ozzy might not be what is reguard as Heavy Metal by kids today, by he's definitely what was originally reguarded as Heavy Metal.
Steppenwolf? Give me a break. They was never anything else then a rock n' roll band.

I think you'll find it was William S Burroughs who coined the phrase "Heavy Metal". But it was first used in reference to music by a journalist reviewing an MC5 gig. Almost there though thetoddguetti. ;)

METAL. All true metal fans will tell you that. Doesn't the term "heavy metal" seem kind of outdated and antiquated, kind of a term that is used by people who don't "get it"? Of course the term "heavy metal" was still acceptable over twenty years ago by metal bands, but now we as true metal fans have simplified the term and gotten to the point: METAL. No qualifying words, no adjectives, just five simple letters that say it all--METAL.
The "Heavy metal" these days is like what people who didn't "get it" used to call it--"acid rock", "hard rock", or "heavy rock". It's like something from the 70's. Well, Ozzy's brain is still stuck in the 70's, so that's no surpise. Kind of a telling testimony of a man who cannot properly honor the great genre of music he helped co-found with Black Sabbath. Ozzy is now pop. He wants to do duets with Paul McCartney.
Ozzy sold out long ago. He is NOT metal.

In what universe do you people live in where Ozzy isn't heavy metal? Ozzy is almost the definition of heavy metal. That's like saying Judas Priest isn't heavy metal? I don't care if he did put out 2 or 3 bad cd's lately, this is the man that helped invent the sound. Show some respect you maggots.

HEAVEN AND HELL IS BLACK SABBATH.
UP THE IRONS.
Maiden and H&H are still putting out vibrant, relevant music while poor Oz is being led around by his handler...er..."wife" on a leash and reading his way off a teleprompter for the 1,000,000 time through Paranoid and Crazy Train while trying to sue his former "friends" and bandmates.
His contribution as a forefather of metal is undeniable, but any other case you're trying to make is weak.

i wanted to take offense on what he said, except that i don't see any. at least, not in the way he said it. besides, i heard him say this many times back in the 90's, so it's old news and nothing to get riled about. it's not like the time when glenn danzig said something about judas priest not being heavy metal back in the 90's. that was the most idiotic anti metal statement yet.

Ozzy is a douchebag. First off, addiction is not an illness. How does that even add up? If u make a choice to juice up you are solely responsible for your actions aswell as the results. To call it an illness is a slap in the face to all ppl who have a "real" illness. Its´not like you wake up one day and feel strange, go to the doc and they say "oh hey u have an illness called addiction to smack". Jesus fucking christ this is a retarded comment form Oz.

you should all be ashamed of yourself.
you cannot call yourself a metal fan and not like Ozzy, if you do then you have no taste and should go listen to some more death core metal from bands that have less fans and supporters then Ozzy has brain cells left.

No one has nailed the "Heavy Metal" origin properly yet. Other than the chemistry term that's been used for hundreds of years, the first time it was used to describe a band was in a Rolling Stone review of Electric Flag in 1968.
And as far as Ozzy goes, he's been virtually useless since 1975 so I refuse to pay attention to his interviews. His solo career would be a joke without Randy Rhoads and Jake E. Lee so he doesn't really deserve recognition past the first 5 Sabbath albums... not like he was a very important element of their band anyways, considering he's the weakest aspect of their sound.

Am I the only one who saw the genius in the idea of recording on the tour bus/van while on tour and selling it at concerts? I don't know if he thought of that, or if he is passing on an idea he heard, but that's brilliant. It adds incentive to going to shows, as well as could get the bands some money at the merch booth. One of the better ideas I've heard to help working musicians. I also like the idea of recording the show and selling the "bootleg" after.

No one is saying that Ozzy has never been metal. He is not metal NOW. He is a celebrity, he is overrated and has wayyyy too much appeal to people who have no real interest in metal. TV has somehow "validated" him in the eyes of non-metal fans. We loved him in his days with Black Sabbath and through the 80's with Randy Rhoads, Jake E. Lee, and Zakk Wylde, and had the total rock and roll and metal persona, but he has lost it ever since he started his reality sitcoms.
Case in point: Two years ago, when Ozzy was about to start his world tour in Seattle, I heard some kids on the bus ask each other, "Are you going to see The Osbournes?"
