KISS' 'Sonic Boom' To Top Next Week's U.S. Album Chart
- Oct. 7, 2009
|
|
According to Hits Daily Double, the companion web site of music industry tip sheet HITS, KISS' new album, "Sonic Boom", is on track to sell between 150,000 and 175,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release, giving the masked rockers a beeline on their first chart-topping release ever. KISS' new album, "Sonic Boom", was released in Europe on October 5 via Loud & Proud/ Roadrunner Records. The CD is being made available in the U.S. and Canada on October 6 exclusively via Wal-Mart, Walmart.com and Sam's Club retail locations. "Sonic Boom", produced by guitarist/vocalist Paul Stanley in Los Angeles, is the centerpiece of a three-disc set that also features a completely re-recorded greatest hits CD (previously available in Japan) as well as a live DVD shot in Argentina during the band's recent, record-breaking KISS Alive 35 South American tour. The CD set is retailing for $12. The "Sonic Boom" cover art was created by Michael Doret, who also designed the band's classic "Rock And Roll Over" album cover.

There's a couple decent tracks with Modern Day Deliah leading the pack but Out in the Cold just plain sucks ass. What's up with the lyrics If it's too Loud You're too Old... That has cheese jizz all over it.
I do have to give them mad props for the 5.00 black T's of the Destroyer and Sonic Boom covers at Walmart. The shirts are of good solid quality...

I got the CD and wacked it in, and it is a good KISS CD. Not all the songs sound like 70's KISS as the band said it would, but they all sound like good KISS songs!

...as KISS certainly deserve to have a Number #1 album to their credit. Especially after rolling up their sleeves and delivering the quality album they have.
HOWEVER ... there's still a chance they chart lower than that.
Michael Buble (whose last studio album topped Billboard) has a new cd coming out Friday. With his appearance on Oprah this week, he has the best shot at keeping KISS from Number #1.
Regardless of chart entry, I'm floored the cd is moving those kind of numbers.

#1) The re-records don't do anything for me. Black Diamond is probably the best of the bunch ... mainly because it had the novelty of Singer's lead vocals going for it. I'll take it for free as a bonus disc, but it won't be getting much of a workout.
#2) I agree that I wish KISS earned their number one spot with one of their 70's classics. 'Love Gun' came closest.
... again, despite the headline above, KISS may still enter below the top spot. Not that there's anything wrong with a #2 showing, but man, KISS should have at least one number one album in their amazing career.

i'll be the first KISS fan to throw cold water on this. i know there is illegal downloading, piracy etcthat all artists suffer from. But 170,000 is weak still. i hope this doesn't include downloaded legal copies of the album. hell, when Tools new album came out, it sold 600,000 in the first week. I like this album and i'm as big a KISS fan as it gets, but these numbers are disapointing to me...

Even if you don't like Kiss, nobody should complain about this success. It can mean only good things for all of us as hard rock and metal fans. Success breeds success. Things like this just open the door for other like minded musicians to get some much deserved exposure.
Has anybody noticed that there seems to be a lot more rock and metal on network TV recently? Its the snowball effect. The simple truth is that metal fans buy albums and concert tickets.... 12 year old pop fans do not. Right now that makes us important to the industry.

Did Blabbermouth suddenly become Yo MTV Raps or something?
OF COURSE this album is selling well, who else is putting out 3 disks for $12? The industry should have been doing this all along, I hope they see the sales numbers and act accordingly. And for that, I give this bullshit scab band a huge thumb's up.
But nope, I don't like 80's-style hair "metal" so I'll pass.

If each unit didn't count as THREE and it wasn't sold at a drastically reduced price to the People of Wal-Mart, this album would have barely cracked the top ten.
Divide the total by three if you'd like to get a more accurate representation of how many individuals actually bought the album.
Then wait to see sales PLUMMET next week and there after.

You are incorrect. KISS is not getting 3 units credited for each one sold. Only the Sonic Boom CD is counting towards the total. The DVD not counting is obvious(except to you) as it is a DVD, not a CD. The rerecords don't count because in order to get credit for 2 CD's, they have to total 100 minutes and the rerecords come up short. So only Sonic Boom is counting. Try again hater. Hell, Psycho Circus with the orginal members and all the fanfare only sold 109k in its first week. And that was before downloading. 150-175k is very good for this environment.

... the weekly billboard charts are tallied by how many units are SCANNED at retailers registers, so if Sonic Boom's sales are 200,000, then they sold 200, 000 copies of Sonic Boom. On the flip side, the RIAA who awards gold and platinum awards, goes by how many discs were SHIPPED... so your theory is accurate here, but I think it would be mulitplied by 2, not 3 (I'm not so sure the DVD counts in this case). So, if Sonic Boom shipped 250,000 copies to retailers, then it would be at least gold (meaning 500,000 shipped). Someone correct me if I'm wrong too, please.

Good, I'm happy they may get to #1, but Walmart can't be too happy with this.
Last year AC/DC sold 784,000 in the first week with there Walmart special.
In 2007, The Eagles sold 711,000 in the first week with there walmart deal
If Kiss struck a similar deal (you know they probably did) then Walmart is not happy.

just for the record only sonic boom counts in sales because the re recorded disk and dvd are extras not part of " sonic boom " its self..with alive one 2 disk's were counted because both disk's were part of the release, in this case these are just freebies that come with the new album if for some reason it doesnt debut #1 this week, sales of this album will stay steady and this will go #1 in many countires !!!

Some funny rationalizations going on from the non KISS fans...
#1) The Sonic Boom package is counted as a single unit for Soundscan. Thus ... 150,000 copies to 175,000 copies sold means just that.
#2) There is NO secret deal where Wal-Mart guaranteed to report a certain number of units sold for the first week.
#3) "Sonic Boom is a failure even if it goes to number one because AC/DC sold more in its first week"
LOL ... this is one of my favorites. Look Einstein, AC/DC moves more units than KISS ... and probably everybody else's favorite band who's posting here. Here's the reality ... if the band sells the amount of units as predicted above, it will be the group's best sales week since the SoundScan era began back in 1991. Fact.
#4) The cd will drop off the charts next week.
Sonic Boom WILL drop in next weeks chart. Hard to predict how far, but that doesn't detract from the cd entering at the Top Spot (or at #2).
A drop off in the 2nd week usually happens with new releases ... especially from veteran hard rock acts.
The one exception I can think of is the Chickenfoot release ... but that was because it came out on a Friday and only had through Sunday evening to be counted for its first week sales. So it actually went up the chart in its second week, due to having a full week of sales.
#5) "Psycho Circus did the same thing and is now panned. Same thing will happen with Sonic Boom"
Except that critics, and more importantly FANS, were underwhelmed by Psycho Circus from the get go. That's a far cry from the critical and fan reaction to this release.
I do find it funny that the usual suspects will come up with a conspiracy theory to calm themselves over the band doing well. Some of you are pavlovian in your mania.
Oh ... for the record, 'Love Gun' peaked at #4

I heard Sonic Boom at work yesterday and, upon first listen, it was pretty boring in my opinion. I will give it a few more tries but nothing stood out to me as anything above mediocre. I heard Anomaly too last week and thought that was pretty horrible. My money will go to Slayer next month.

Are these physical store purchases or b^ll sh^t number of Wal Mart store orders like the ac/dc disc. Walmart stores are flooded with AcDc cd's, but they still count as bogus "sales" since Wal Mart ended up ordering them. I'm also curious to see what the itunes numbers are like, because that's the only chart that really matters these days. On a positive note, the couple of songs I heard sound pretty good for a change.

"they still count as bogus "sales" since Wal Mart ended up ordering them"
No, they Wal-Mart order simply equates to the amount SHIPPED, not actually SOLD. That's where Soundscan comes in. KISS is literally SELLING the amount of units mentioned above.
The cd WILL remain overstocked like 'Black Ice" though. Good lord, did they order a massive amount of both.

Yeah, they had to order over a miilion CD's because that was part of the plan For Black Ice and for Wal-Mart to get the Exclusive rights to sell..It basically guarantees that the CD goes Double Platinum without a purchase ever being made.Kind of misleading and weak.

Keep in mind there are two CDs in Sonic Boom, so each sale counts as two, so the numbers being reported are actually twice the number of copies of Sonic Boom that have really sold.

For the umpteenth time if this thread, the entire Sonic Boom package is being counted by Soundscan as ONE unit.
Obviously, there's still a big misunderstanding about how multi-set albums are counted for the Billboard charts.
One album sold counts as one album sold, whether the CD is a single set, a double-CD, a triple-CD, or whatever.
The "double-CD counting as two CDs" is the policy of the RIAA!!! You know, the agency that determines gold and platinum certifications.
So ... ONE MORE TIME so that the slower ones can grasp this:
SOUNDSCAN counts one CD sold as one CD sold, even if that CD is a double or triple set.
Everyone get that now? Good.
Sheeeeesh....

But you didn't have to be a dick about it. I didn't read all of the 80+ posts to see that this had already been addressed.

...and you're welcome for the clarification.
The tone in my post relates to the number of times we've addressed this already, which yes ... I had assumed you had read.
My apologies...

SOLA:
NO. You are wrong. Wal-Mart may have promised KISS a certain amount of albums sold, which KISS is paid for as part of the deal. So Wal-mart PURCHASES a million uniits..however, Soundscan does not track PURCHASES by suppliers. It tracks SALES of albums. So whenever a cashier rings through Sonic Boom at your local wal-mart, Soundscan will receive a report, telling them Sonic Boom just sold 1 copy.

I'm a huge KISS fan and have been for a long time. The playing on the album is one of their best ever. I still don't think there are any real anthems though. Almost every album, except the Elder and Unmasked has had one. Just the same it's good. I give every song a 7 or 8 out of 10. Every album since Love Gun (forget then she kissed me) has has a few 3 and 4s. I don't understand the whole comparison to Ace though. The guy just doesn't have the work ethic to tour or put out material on a regular basis. A great artist though! But 7 years since his departure and 20 years since his last album before releasing anything. Talk about failing to cease the moment. This alone demonstrates why they needed to move on without him!
