ANAL BLAST Singer Dies At 41 - Oct. 11, 2009
Don Decker, legendary lead singer and songwriter of ANAL BLAST and longtime Midwest promoter, died today (Sunday, October 11) at 2:17 a.m. According to his friends, the passing was "peaceful." He was 41 years old.

The cause of death has not been made public, but Decker reportedly received a liver transplant last year.

Decker will be remembered for his uncompromising adoration of heavy metal, his promotion business in Minnesota, which almost single-handedly jumpstarted the Minnesota metal scene, and his violently obscene lyrics for the group ANAL BLAST — which he said was "the most stupid band in the world."

SwordLord, I was planning on going to that Blind Guardian and Symphony X show, but I got mono and couldn't go.

I never knew Decker personally, but years ago I had an interesting encounter with the man. I wanted to see Skinless play at The Lab, which he owned at the time. I wasn't old enough to get in, as it was an 18+ show. A friend of mine knew Decker, and was nice enough call him and ask him if he would let me in the show. Decker agreed. My friend told me all I had to do was say I knew Decker when I got to the door, and they would let me in. When I arrived at the show, I walked into the venue, only to be asked for ID at the door. I nervously told the man checking IDs that I knew Decker, to which everyone in line burst out laughing. The man, not laughing at all, replied "I'm Decker," and as I started to respond, he put his hand in front of my mouth to stop me from speaking, grabbed the back of my head with his other hand, and pulled me through the door. Needless to say, I felt like a douche, but I got in and the show was awesome. An interesting fact though, Skinless opened for Six Feet Under (sorry), who were filming for a live DVD. You can see me in the DVD multiple times, including when they pan through the bar in the beginning and you can see me sitting there feeling like a douche. I'm pretty much the only one wearing a white shirt instead of black.

Honestly, Decker seemed like quite the asshole, and I've heard multiple stories which seemed to prove that, however, I didn't know him, so I have no idea how he really was. Regardless, I still don't like to see someone die young. RIP

either 93 or 94, incantation/a.c./divine eve/morpheus descends/gutted/ and i forgot who else were all playing a gig in mexico.

i was coming back from walking some girl somwhere when i see these mexican cops hassling some big fat white guy..

they couldnt communicate with one another but apparently the cops were trying to arrest this guy for drinking in public,
(he was watching 2 vans during the last set)

the guy tells me to tell them that he doesnt know what the fuck theyre trying to tell him and he was abit shaken...as were the pigs..there was no way they were both as big as him put together...

so, being bilingual i talk to the cops they ask me to tell him to toss the beer and they'd leave him alone and thats what happened

i start talking to this lardass and he gived me a cassete cover for this band he claims to have recently started, he asked me for a mailing address which i gave him and a few weeks later i get a bunch of demos and crap as a show of thanx i suppose... sure enough in the 15 or so year since i got to know fatass and we several drunken times together..

i'm certain there will be hundreds more stories like this from people all over the place in memory of that fat asshole

Drink and worship thy true nature.....

I remember before Decker opened Nightfall Records when he was just hocking CDs and Tshirts (some official, some Mexian bootlegs) during shows, back when the Mirage was still open. This was before it was easy to order stuff online and extreme metal was really difficult to come by. Once Nightfall opened in 95 or 96, I used to go there and just hang out (and of course buy stuff) and occasionally he would set makeup out, and customers (and Decker) would put on corpsepaint just to be cheesy and freak out people in Minneapolis. Good times.

After Nightfall closed, I didn't see too much of him except for at shows of course. Decker really made the metal scene in the Twin Cities, and I really appreciate his work in bringing quality international and local acts to the area. Without his promotional skills I doubt I would have even heard of a lot of bands, and going to those shows really shaped my taste in extreme metal.

I didn't even know Don was sick (I've been out of the area for years now) but I am sorry to hear that he passed. I am glad to hear that his death was peaceful. My thoughts go out to his friends and family.

Hey dude, way to shit all over this thread. Obviously you lack the intelligence or emotional capacity to understand the word homage or even memoirs. When someone dies, you talk about the good experiences you had with them or how you got to know them, you probably are going to use the word "I" a few times. Sorry that you haven't formed enough solid relationships with anyone that you would understand that.

A sad story. I tore my ACL and broke my leg in 2001. I frequently attended metal shows at The Lab in St. Paul during my recovery. Any time I ran into Don at the shows, he would always ask me how I was doing and how my leg was even long after I was walking around fine.

I was a loyal customer of Don's when he ran Nightfall Records. He's the one who got me into Vintersorg and the one who steered me away from a lot of bad records.

Don Decker was always cool to me anytime I saw him, shopped at his store or talked to him at shows. He will be missed. Rest in peace metal brother.

I attended one of the MetalFest shows in NJ awhile back.

After the first day I went to the horrible motel where I was staying and picked up my room key. I went to the room, opened the door, and looked around shocked.

The place was trashed and had an indescribable smell - it was obvious someone (or something) was staying there and that I had been given the wrong key. The bed was covered in rather obscure Porn magazines and half empty lube tubes - enema bags littered the floor beside the bed - various other unknown (to me) devices, which looked "wet" were strewn around the room.

One pile seemed to be reserved for Anal Blast merchandise, including some US Mail with Don's name & address on it - that's when I realized whose room I had been directed to.

I closed the door, returned to the desk and got the correct key, then washed my hands with surgical thoroughness in my room.

Wherever he is now, it has to be better than that motel room in NJ.

I can't even start to talk about when I first met Decker. It was always if we knew each other.

For all those who hated him, he was really a decent guy, at least in terms of helping bands out. I can't count how many times he called me and said, "Hey who do you know that wants to Open for X band?" That question always led me to an exchange with him... because of him, a lot of bands got to open for their idols. I won't ramble on about the bands my old band played with or the shows I worked with him, because in the end, it's a moot point. It's not the who, it's the how... and he had more knowledge to share than almost anyone I know. All you had to do was take the time.

He used to call me on the road when he was having a panic attack or was bored. His moments of vunerabilty always left such an impression on me... because I got to see the human side of Decker. Something that many didn't get to see.

It's not that we didn't have our moments of arguing, but he respected that I wouldn't buckle under for his yelling and ranting, and I respected him for who he was.

Decker was a wealth of knowledge about metal, and not just in the Minnesota scene, but over all. For what he did, he did it well.

Way back when I lived in Minnesota, I helped him on a couple of shows (doing some roadie/ photo work) and he helped me. He was always cool with me because he knew that I wasn't out to screw him over. I remember getting a call a couple of years ago that he was in a coma...

Last I heard, he was going to hit the road because he wanted it that way.

There was no one in the world like Decker. No one as rude, as mean, as disgusting... but that being said, he will be sadly missed and Minnesota (and the Metal community) lost yet another great metal idol.

Go find Jeske and Earl, Decker. They're up there waiting for ya somewhere to say hello.

So I have to relate this one story...

A few years ago, I was sitting at the bar at the Station 4 (or what ever the hell it is now.) Decker waddles in sees me and then says, "Oh, I have something for you..." turns around and walks back upstairs to his rehersal space.

About 15 minutes later he comes down and slaps a Grimoiremagazine with Peter Steele in it. (Yeah, I'm a dork). He then says, "I saw this and kept it so you could take a look at it seeing as how you're so pussy wet over Peter." I read the article, put the magazine on the bar and say to Decker. "I'm keeping this.."

Toward the end of the night, he starts to leave and I yell, "Decker! You forgot your magazine..." He looks at me and says, "No. You said you're keeping it. Take the damn thing home and buy me a drink."

The first time I met Don was at Paganfest USA, Station 4, on May 2, 2008. I was doing some equipment carrying work for the show (thank you, SwordLord!). He was selling NYDM patches with Mjollnir on them. I liked them, so I asked how much he wanted for one. He replied, "That depends-can ya read it? If you can, it's $6, otherwise it's $10." After a few seconds of looking at the Norse runes, I read, "True Brother of the Hammer and the Sword..." I then explain that I was still learning the runes. But he was cool about it and said, "I'll still give you the discount if you can read that much of it." I pay him, he says "There ya go, laddy!" (in a mock Scottish accent) I thanked him, and carried on for the evening.

On October 12, 2008 (one winter ago today), I attended the Amon Amarth show, also @ Station 4. I was wearing the patch on my dingy old Levi's vest, standing by the stage. He spotted me from up on the side of the stage, top of the stairs (people who know Station 4 know what I' talking about). He says, "Excuse me! Where did you get that patch?" I said, "I think I bought it from you at Paganfest!" He said, "OK, just checking!" Later, during AA's set, he comes down & gives me a smirk with a hearty slug on the shoulder, where my patch is.

I'll never forget the brief interactions I had with Don. I would've loved to hang out with him for some drinks & to talk about metal in general. But, the Fate of Norns awaits us all, to quote the aforementioned band, so to Don Decker, I say thank you, rest in peace, and I will see you on the other side of Bifrost! Hail, hail, HAIL!!!
