BLUE CHEER's DICKIE PETERSON Dead At 61 - Oct. 12, 2009
Dickie Peterson, the bassist/vocalist and founding member of BLUE CHEER, passed away this morning (Monday, October 12) at 5 a.m. in Germany. He was 61 years old. Peterson had reportedly been battling prostate and liver cancer, and according to BLUE CHEER's message board, had developed a fatal infection following a surgical procedure to help alleviate his fight.

BLUE CHEER was an American blues-rock band that initially performed and recorded in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and has been sporadically active since. Based in San Francisco, BLUE CHEER played in a psychedelic blues-rock style, and was also credited for pioneering heavy metal (their cover of "Summertime Blues" is sometimes cited as the first in the genre), punk rock, stoner rock, doom metal and grunge.

Throughout his life, Peterson's relationship to music has been all-consuming. He was quoted as saying, "I've been married twice, I've had numerous girlfriends, and they'll all tell you that if I'm not playing music I am an animal to live with. . . Music is a place where I get to deal with a lot of my emotion and displaced energy. I always only wanted to play music, and that's all I still want to do."

Despite the fact that BLUE CHEER was considered a pioneer in many different genres, Peterson downplayed the band's influence, stating in an interview, "People keep trying to say that we're heavy metal or grunge or punk, or we're this or that. The reality is we're just a power trio and we play ultra-blues, and it's rock 'n' roll. It's really simple what we do."

Peterson spent much of the past two decades based in Germany, performing with BLUE CHEER and with other groups as well. In 1998 and 1999, he played a number of dates in Germany with the HANK DAVISON BAND and as an acoustic duo with Hank Davison under the banner DOS HOMBRES.

I'm speechless. I saw them a few years back and it was so loud it was stripping the paint off the walls. Man, I'm so sad. I thought he had cleaned himself up. I wonder what happened. And Dickie was younger than Lemmy!!!

This is very sudden. I'll have to spin Blue Cheer in his honor tonight.

I don't want to believe he's dead! That's very sad. They were still making great music together. Blue Cheer's first 2 albums are just as heavy as Black Sabbath and they were released before the 1st Black Sabbath album - and a big influence on Sabbath in general. So in many ways, Blue Cheer was the FIRST metal band... Now they are gone.

Wow, this is sad news. I'm a big Blue Cheer fan, never got to see them live. They came through town a couple of years ago and my band had a gig that night so I didn't go. But I discovered them in the early 80s when I was in high school when I was on my first journey to discover proto-metal bands (there is some excellent really heavy stuff out there besides Sabbath from the late 60s and early 70s). Lots of good memories listening to these guys. He will be missed. RIP

Dickie Peterson, pioneer. I've always felt that Blue Cheer were HUGELY underrated. Sure "Vincebus ...." gets cited frequently, but what about "The Original Human Being"? I find merit in all of their releases. These guys should get their due.

Bad news, great band, Dickies bass was SO heavy live, just like on Vincebus.
He said he had Hep, it's what Out of Focus was about, cause he had it before doctors knew what it was, for a guy who had that he lived a long life, I suppose.
RIP

Very sad news. Though he may have downplayed their influences, I would say from my vantage point BLUE CHEER were among the founding fathers of heavy metal. It didn't get much louder or prouder than early BLUE CHEER. Thanks to Dickie, Paul, and Leigh for creating some of the best feedback laden wall of sound heaviness ever created.

MTV used to have a show called "closet classics" where i discovered alot of insane stuff.... The videos they had for Black Sabbath's "paranoid", Crazy World Of Arthur Brown's "Fire", Ziggy Stardust era Bowie doing "Changes", and Blue Cheer's "summertime blues" were ones that stick out

Blue Cheer had just huge distortion and they must have been painfully loud live. They also must have each had 3 feet of hair hanging down from thier heads. They just looked and sounded insane. Some say that they might have been the first Heavy Metal band.I know they must have influenced everything that happened in the 70's in some way as far as hard music goes.

I hate it that guys like this dont seem to live extremely long lives whether it be the original members of bands like the original Alice Cooper band, Blue cheer, Skynyrd, Foghat, Spiders From Mars, and so many others from that era or pretty much any old school punk band...however, thier music will always keep them alive

I send my condolances to Dickies family. He never got what he deserved. He was one of the greats of rock history. I bought the first Blue Cheer album when it came out! I just learned about his passing away and got straight on the internet to look for news about him. I have all of his music and enjoy it on a regular basis. I saw him play live twice here in Belgium and he was a true musician. Dickie will live on in his music. He deserves a monumental retrospective! Dickie you will stay with me untill I die!
