ALICE IN CHAINS Drummer: 'The Music Has Taken On A Life Of Its Own' - Oct. 14, 2009
Ireland's RTÉ.ie recently conducted an interview with ALICE IN CHAINS members William DuVall (vocals) and Sean Kinney (drums). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

RTÉ.ie: A lot of bands get back together and it sounds very after the after the fact. With you, it sounds like unfinished business.

Kinney: We never had a problem making music. We had a problem managing our lives. We had a problem [due to] living really hard. Music was so easy for us. And what's so great for us is that it's the same kind of vibe nowadays. We're all in the same headspace and do this for the same reasons and that's still intact.

We just lived really hard and did some things personally that started to get into the way of doing the one thing that we really loved, so we just stopped showing up. It's been 14 years, that's 5,076 days, since we put out a record. A lot of time has passed and I'm excited and it's great to have something to be excited about [and] that you care so much about.

RTÉ.ie: It must be very draining, though, in interviews for people to focus on the past.

Kinney: Yeah, that's part of it though, y'know? That's part of the game. I don't come in here with some idea that that's not... And the easy way to remedy that is to be in a band that makes albums about 'chicks and cars and partying'. But that's just not how we operate. Everything is pretty much real life kind of topics.

The thing that gets old is that so much [focus] gets put on the drugs. And I can understand that, but that's not a unique story, that's a very common story. All of our songs are not about drugs — maybe about 15% of our music was about that. It's easy to put a label on something and that's what people do.

Hopefully the label they put on this album is about moving on. This is a more universal theme to me. This is about loss that we have all experienced in our lives or will experience and getting out of that place and moving forward into a better way. That's all you can ask for, that's all you can do.

RTÉ.ie: There will always be fans who love the old records that you're not going to reach.

DuVall: And that's OK. This is an invitation and you don't have to take it. But it's an invitation that's coming from a really, really truthful and very, very profound place. I think the people that take it and the people that show up to the party are going to really be rewarded. And they have been rewarded, and they're digging it.

Kinney: Seeing Will just give his all every night and going at it and turning people around who have a closed mind [as to] why we're doing this is amazing. I understand [fans have] a little bit of fear and that people connected to the records we've done so strongly and I honor that completely. But it's a little rude for people who listen to those records and bond with them to try to pass judgment on us and say we don't have the right to do something.

The truth is that all of these things that they care about so much didn't happen to them: it actually happened to us. It was actually our real life. My friend's dead and I live with that every day. We've all lost people and everybody will in life. And just because you loved our record so much doesn't mean you can't move on. If we can find a way to move on and they can't then I just kind of feel sorry for people at that point. This happened to us and we can move on with our heads up and are doing it in the most honorable and genuine fashion. And you can't because you just listened to a record? That's a little sad.

RTÉ.ie: One thing I've always been struck by during the years you were away is the amount of goodwill rock fans have towards ALICE IN CHAINS.

Kinney: That's been one of the amazing things. The music lived on. We didn't serve it. We weren't out there trying to sell it, work it or anything. The music on its own merit and what we had done when we started this thing took on a life of its own and you can't make that happen. A record company can't make that happen. They can put their whole machine behind a song that you may not like that gets it on the radio and they play it all day long. But will that song still be played 10 or 20 years down the road on its own?

I think it's the greatest reward that the music has taken on a life of its own and been passed onto another generation. So now when we do these shows a lot of these people weren't even born when our first record came out and it means something to them.

RTÉ.ie: That's very special.

Kinney: There was no reason why we had to do this. It was for real, genuine belief and caring. For me part of the reason [in making the album] is showing that horrible stuff happens everybody in their life and that you need to get up and you need to move on. And how do you do that respectfully and truthfully?

And another thing is to take what Jerry [Cantrell, guitarist], Layne [Staley, late singer], Mike Starr [former bassist] and I created when we were teenagers and bring that thing that has taken on a life of its own — and we're not all here to be part of it — to these people. That's important to me. They connected with it and the whole thing gets to move forward. It's not like we shut the door on that part of our life. That's forever a huge part of our life. That door always remains open.

DuVall: And new friendships come into play and new bonding takes place. That comes out of the same honest place that all their previous music came out of. It's no different. Cantrell and I go back 10 years. We were friends first and that friendship evolved finally to a point where it's led to us sitting here talking about a new ALICE IN CHAINS record — because of that three years of touring that we did starting in '06. That's where Mike Inez [bassist], Sean, myself and Cantrell all fused together as a unit and became a hell of band in our own right. That journey is what you're hearing as well on this album. It's as much about the present and the future as it is about honoring the past. And it is about people's memories as regards to music: it becomes the soundtrack to people's lives. That's stuff you can't plan that becomes an incredible reward.

I've been a fan since Facelift and I gotta say that I LOVE Black gives way to Blue. Hopefully this will be Alice's Back in Black. The music is there and so is Layne's spirit. The last thing Layne would want is for his boys to quit playing music. I for one am so glad Alice is back and the other guys have dealt with their demons. Hopefully there is more to come!

Great interview. Kinney is bang on: They were the ones that experienced the loss of Layne the most. If they are able to move on and create great music, then the fans should be able to too. Love the new record.

but the new AIC is pretty fuckin' good. I went back and listened to Dirt and Facelift. You forget how good they were. Jar of Flies too. I remember I bought Jar of Flies and Soungarden's Superunknown on the same day. Both were great albums.

I wanted to like the new album, but unfortunately, I don't think there's even one great song on it. And they're all soooooo slooooow. What the hell--do they think they're a doom band? It's not a horrible album, and people are obviously really desperate for good new music, but I'm gonna stick with Facelift, Dirt, and Degradation Trip.

It really doesnt matter if it's a reunion, if 3/4 of a band got replaced, if style changes. It all comes down to the music. Does it sound good or not?

In Alice in Chains' case: it's great. beyond any expectations.

BGWtB: Album of the Year. ...of the decade ... of the millennium.

No way to put it into words... this album is perfect and has it all: GREAT songwriting, great musicianship, enough emotion to fill a solar system, atmosphere, mood, soaring choruses, trademarked AiC harmonized vox, stellar production, amazing tones, perfect mix...

I really could go on. This is everything I was hoping for times twelve. I've never had such high hopes for an album, and my hopes have never been so incredibly small compared to the end result.

This is magical, and we're living in the light of this album RIGHT NOW.

I got to see them a few weeks ago on my birthday in SF, and it was easily one of my favorite shows, and I think I've seen many kick ass bands. Their live sound was perfect. I'm already ready for another CD. Bring it Chains!

it's modern classic rock.. it can stand on its own for new fans not familiar with past albums, yet I think it's undeniably alice in chains for old fans.

good evolution and a good restart, but I think the next album will be a monster comeback.

I'm having a really hard time understanding why anybody would not thing this album is good, the one comment was there was not even one good song on it. Are you freaking kidding me? I'm an old guy (mid 40s) and an AIC fan since Facelift. When Layne died, it hit me hard for some reason -- didn't expect that. I was a little skeptical when they hooked up with William, but I was familiar with Come With The Fall and knew he was a super talented guy. After seeing them in 2006 on the first reunion tour, I had no doubt they could move on and had the right guy to help with that. Dirt is in my top 5 albums of all time and I have to tell you, BGWTB is right up there and actually more consistent. It may end up being in my top five. It is an amazing record front to back. I've listened to nothing else since it came out -- harmonies are amazing, Jerry's playing is superb (as always and he is one of my top influences as a guitar player), songs are fantastic, and it is both beautiful and dark -- just like AIC should be. The acoustic numbers, amazing. And Williams is fantastic -- one the song When the Sun Rose Again almost sounds like Layne is singing in the harmony parts. It did take a few listens for the record to REALLY sink in, I encourage people to listen to it no less than three times before making a decision. I've found through the years that the best music almost always takes some time to get aquainted with (Tool, Electric Wizard, Sleep and Kyuss fall into the same category).

And AIC as a doom band? Well, being I am pretty much a doom fan (I play in a stoner doom band), I have always categorized AIC as a great heavy rock band that has doom tendencies. They are at their best when they are slower, heavier, and going for that really off sounding melody or riff. They are also amazing when they go acoustic, something most bands can't do. AIC does it better than just about anybody.

So, first off, I should not have used the term "doom" pejoratively, because I am a big fan of the genre. It was a sarcastic comment, attempting to point out that their new sound is quite dissimilar from their old sound. Secondly, for the nitpickers: no, Degradation Trip Was not a particularly fast album--but it did have way better riffs and a lot more lead guitar--in all, a far more intense album than the new AiC. Thirdly, even IF some of the songs matched their best slow songs from the past, which they don't, the lack of any tempo changes or energy bursts is a major drag on the new album.

Bottom line: you guys are drinkin' some bad-ass Kool-Aid if you really think this album can stand with Facelift and Dirt.

But I love the new AIC. I was also dubious going in, expected to like a few tunes and then check out them live. I was absolutely stunned how much I enjoy this CD. I think it stands up there with their previous work, and what about SAP, no one mentions that lil' gem..... Rando, I really like Degradation Trip too, but do not see that as better riffs and lead (but I am not some guitar slayer, so u could be technically right), and the the new AIC is heavier, but that is just my opinion, does not make me right. Some like vanilla some like chocolate, some like both.

But I think new AIC kicks ass, and am happy for them. Good luck guys

It is a little on the lighter side for an AIC disc - no doubt. But it's still a damn fine record. It sounds great. The beauty of Dirt, to me, was that there were songs that grabbed your attention immediately, like Rooster, Would?, Damn that River. But then, later on for me, I think I fell in love with Dirt, Junkhead, and Angry Chair much more. While I don't know if that will happen here, the more I listen, the more I like it. Personally, I'm just thankful that one of my favorite bands has gotten to putting out new music. Now, I just cannot friggin wait for a new Armored Saint record due out in spring!!!! I ain't getting any younger.

It's been too long, and this new album is a really strong piece of work. It's a grower, you have to listen to it a few times, but that's often the mark of a great album that will stand the test of time.

Best of luck to them, they deserve the renewed success this album will bring.

BGWTB is definitely a different album, but each of their albums has a unique sound to it. (You can't deny that.) As far as the new release goes, there were some songs that I loved right off the bat, and there were others that have taken some time to grow on me. (Of course, I've been listening to BGWTB non-stop for the past month.) This album simply sounds like it should: a PHENOMENAL band coming back after losing their somewhat-iconic frontman and taking a 14-year hiatus. They are obviously older and wiser, and the music certainly reflects that.

The hipster douchebags who reviewed BGWTB for Rolling Stone and Spin should NOT be getting paid for what they do.

Absolutely ATROCIOUS reviews; I highly doubt that either one of them actually listened to the album in its entirety.
