METALLICA's KIRK HAMMETT Says 'Big Four' Tour Won't Happen - Oct. 15, 2009
Shaffee and El Jefe of the WKLS Project 9-6-1 96.1 FM radio station conducted an interview with METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett prior to the band's October 4, 2009 concert at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. Watch the chat in two parts below.

When asked about the rumors that METALLICA was assembling a tour that would feature the "Big Four" of the 1980s underground thrash metal scene — itself, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAXKirk replied, "That tour is not gonna happen. I've been hearing that, we've all been hearing that for awhile. I get asked [about] it regularly. And as far as a tour going on, it's not gonna happen. Conflicting schedules, conflicting personalities, [a lot of] conflicting things. It's a good idea, though. And personally, I can see the significance of playing a tour like that, but... it's not gonna happen."

(Listen to Kirk talking about the "Big Four" tour rumors by clicking on the audio player below.)

In a September 29, 2009 interview with Cindy Scull of the Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas radio station 97.1 The Eagle Rocks, METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich stated about the "Big Four" tour rumors, "As far as I know, we haven't talked to anybody about it; we've talked about it amongst ourselves. And, obviously, because you get sort of caught up in the rumor of the whole thing, so I get asked about it four times a day in interviews.

"It certainly could be fun, if everybody would be up for it; certainly we would be up for it. But it's not something that's imminent; it's not something that's being discussed for January. Everybody's got their own schedules and everybody's doing their thing, but at some point, of course, in the right situation, I think it could be super-fun.

"Listen, the guys in METALLICA certainly are all about nostalgia, all about lineage, all about making the fans understand how things, sort of, came to be, and connect the dots and all that type of stuff, so I would definitely be up for that. But I haven't made any phone calls yet. [Laughs] But we'll see what happens. I'm sure it definitely could happen one day."

METALLICA guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield also commented on the "Big Four" tour rumors in a September 28, 2009 interview with Cindy Scull. "Sounds like a good idea, huh?" he said. "Well, it's really up to everybody [to make it happen]. We don't know. It's one of these nostalgic ideas that pops up. . . We don't know; we haven't really taken it any steps further. . . You know what?! Music transcends all kinds of B.S., so if it's something that feels right, then hopefully it could happen."

It's funny, Kirk sounds as if his opinion actually meant anything. If Lars and James says "Kirk - DO IT!" Kirk will shrivel up and follow orders, as he's done his whole Metallica career.

The guy may be rich...but he has no balls. Hell, I can't really blame him, I'd sell off my balls for million$!

Mustaine is too mentally unstable for this tour to happen.

Plus I don't think the guys in Slayer have much respect for Metallica these days.

Actually Mustaine and King have talked so much shit about everybody else in the past decade that clearing the air would require Phil Towle to come out of retirement.

Hahaha. That'd be great...a "Big Four" group therapy session hosted by Metallica's old therapist.

Could you just imagine the look on Kerry's face?

Hell, why not bring Jason Newsted back just to make it a total clusterfuck.

Appreciate the honesty, but it sounds like he's trying to kill the idea of the tour, while James sort of brushed it off. He seems like a guy who wants to be calm and at peace and doesn't want to be around guys who "conflict" with him.

Metallica doesn't want to be lumped in with former peers anyway. They sold out in a way that the other bands haven't. Anthrax desperately needs a tour like this, but Slayer and Megadeth are fine without it.

We all knew this thing wouldn't happen. Too many conflicting egos and too much bullshit... And if it did, of course Metallica would have to close out every night. They're the biggest name on the bill, and the best, no matter how much Kerry King blasts them. Slayer second to last, Megadeth third to last and Anthrax would have to open each night. That's just how it would fall. But, like Kirk said, WAY too many egos and conflicting schedules and whatnot...

Hell, I think Metallica should just bring Anthrax on tour with them. That bill would be just fine.

YOURE A FUCKING JEALOUS DOUCHE TALKING OUT OF YOUR ASS. Stuff you dont know at all. By what kirk is saying and what everbody know about metallica one can surely conclude that METALLICA is the one that doesnt want to do it because they want to headline the entire tour is what you're saying right?? you fucking moron.... And kirk just said the obvious, that there are too many conflicts, mainly egos, on the bill...which would make the tour impossible to begin with. From this we can all know by fact that metallica isn't the band that has been talking bullshit about other bands all these years. In fact Metallica wouldnt be the band preventing this tour from happening, but Megadeth, mainly Mustaine, and Slayer, mainly Old kerry King. But King has been very matured lately, not been talking too many shit of other bands and musicians in the last few years.

Besides, if Metallica decides NOT to headline the entire tour.....dont you think that the promoters, even the bands, and most of the fans, wouldnt agree that actually metallica should headline?? 80% of the fans attending this tour wouldnt even know who Anthrax or Megadeth are. But hell, let them deserve watching a headliner they havent even heard about. right?

Money talks. At a certain point the cost vs ticket price will be too much for the fans to want to go.

Metallica + Megadeth are very big bands and the guarantee to get out of bed for them is staggering. We all know who's bigger.

Slayer is big but not as big as the other 2. Truthfully though they aren't the band people would be going to see in the line up. They're an added benefit.

Anthrax plays small fucking bars on their own "headlining" tours unless they coat tail riding. This would be huge for them. Then again they just fucked the Slipknot tour so that would've been great exposure for them.

Testament has been mentioned, great band and would be awesome on this BUT they're second wave bay area. If its the origins tour then no go. Exodus however is one of the founders so...

So now we have 5 bands, Who plays when, for how long? How much do they get paid? Way to many egos for this to function well.

It doesnt shock me. Conflicting schedules, I think, is actually not a real reason. Unless Kirk is just specifically talking about the year 2010 and perhaps 2011 (if bands plan their whole year that far ahead). But he was basically saying 'never gonna happen'. So, I think its about other things. One being 'conflicting personalities'. As in, Dave and Lars/James dont get along. Dave and Kerry have co-existed on their Canadian/Australian tours so i doubt theyd let any issues get in the way of a Big 4 tour. Money might be an issue as well as set-times and set schedules. I dont know...maybe scheduling IS an issue but only if it involved set-times. Lets face it, with this kind of tour, the start time will most probably have to be before 6 pm. And itd be hard to have a tour like that in fall, spring or winter. Because of school. Kind of ironic that a 'thrash nostalgia' tour could get vetoed down, in part, because of high school and college kids not being able to attend. But theyre a huge part of at least the Metallica and Slayer fan base. Im sure Megadeth's too. Sure, they could do this thing in summer, technically, but the summer is European festival season. And unless its something like Ozzfest (which has been passe for a long time now) then they may not want to sacrifice those gigs. The Euro festival circuit is already ALOT different than during Ozzfest's heyday. As there are so many who bring in so many fans. And, in turn, make the headlining bands ALOT of money.

And, really, i think itd be more wise (even financially) to just make it a Big 3 tour. Including Anthrax will do nothing to help ticket sales and fan interest (as Anthrax, with all due respect to them, are not a big player anymore by any means) but do ALOT to hurt set times and income distribution. Also the show could start later with just 3 bands on the bill.

And, lets face it, Metallica (James and Lars, at least and probably Kirk, too) DOESNT NEED the money. Itd be a nice chunk of change...but given that its a star-studded bill they probably wont make any more on this tour than they would on a regular Metallica tour. In fact possibly less.

james will not allow it. i think lars brought up the idea and james veto'd it after giving it some thought. i don't think james can tolerate being on tour with mustaine. it's good that kirk spilled the beans on this one instead of giving politically correct answers like james or lars did. kirk is like the adolescent kid in the band, not as smart as the others guys but also more honest and innocent.

He knows if he follows Chris Broderick, he'll get booed off the stage.

Seriously, who wants to hear the same "90 MPH with a wah pedal" Hammett solo over and over again. Megadeth has easily passed Metallica as king of the metal roost.

Well as you know the fact of the matter is that Metallica sucks balls and they have for a very long time. While all 3 of the other bands have had consistent selling albums in the last ten years, Metallica's album sales have dropped way over 50% from the 4 million seller Reload to barely cracking 1 million with Death Magnetic. Ya'll are real loyalists in Metalli-camp aren't you? The only reason this tour won't happen is if Kirk pussies out cries and starts puking out of nervousness because Dave might beat his sorry ass.
---------------------------------
Barely cracking 1 million? Death Magnetic went platinum a month after release and has sold about 1.8 million copies in the US and over 4 million copies worldwide. Not that sales matter or anything but at least get your facts right.

For me personally, Metallica and Slayer would be great. Don't care for the other two.
