MEGADETH's DAVE MUSTAINE Threatens To Send Journalist To Hospital

MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine has commented on the interview he gave to Norway's Lydverket blog on August 7, 2009 at the Langham Hotel in London, England in which he spoke at length about his brief tenure as the guitarist in METALLICA. A video report (see below) containing excerpts from the chat was posted on the Lydverket web site on Wednesday (October 14) and was published on BLABBERMOUTH.NET yesterday. In a post on MEGADETH's official forum from early this morning (Friday, October 16), Mustaine writes regarding the Lydverket interview, "These people are scum. Don't listen to their interviews, don't buy their shit magazine, don't go to their pathetic garbage website. And stand by, because as soon as I see that interviewer again, I am going to put him in a hospital. [Note: The Lydverket interview was actually conducted by a female reporter, Kristin Winsents, who is said to be one of the most experienced music journalists in Norway. — Ed.] That is a promise. I will find him too. "Again, [the interview was] set up by Roadrunner [ MEGADETH's record company] and left hanging by the label. "Too bad the promo person was not there like I asked so this shit wouldn't happen. "Thanks for nothing, [ Roadrunner]." In a separate posting on the MEGADETH forum, Mustaine reveals his disdain for the U.S. branch of Roadrunner Records for allegedly dropping the ball in regards to the promotion of the band's new album, "Endgame". He writes, "I don't know what to say. How a record company could be presented with a worldwide critically acclaimed record, and that they can let it plummet down the charts in just four weeks into the hundreds, is inexplicable. "I knew I shouldn't have done this. Why didn't I trust myself? "I regret a lot of things in my life, but this is the most regrettable." "Endgame" has sold around 72,000 copies in the United States since its release four weeks ago. The CD has registered the following U.S. weekly sales, according to Nielsen SoundScan: Week 1: 44,696 Week 2: 12,833 Week 3: 8,640 Week 4: 5,583 "Endgame" currently sits at position No. 105 on The Billboard 200 chart.

When this story first got posted the headline was longer,said something like "claims label f***d up promotion" or whatever. And there might have been an extra sentence in the article that got edited out, I'm not sure.

Hey Dave, if you hate this so much why don't you handle everything by yourself? I guess you're the only person who could actually interview yourself and like it. WHy don't you push the promotion higher? Maybe you could also by a few thousand more records yourself so you feel better about your sales.

Record labels are obsolete in the digital age. There's no money in music anymore, (see Type O Negative story about keyboardist going to paramedic school). What's the point of labels spending money to promote albums that people will just download for free? Endgame is a great record, and Megadeth will have to promote it themselves with a huge tour.

I've often defended Dave Mustaine but this beyond the pale.
He's the one doing the talking here - nobody has set him up. He needs to start taking responsibility for his words and actions.
He' knows how the game works - does he expect a journalist not to publish these things? It's what they do - he could say ' no comment' but he chooses not to. He doesn't even use 'off the record' to save himself from seeing this stuff published several weeks down the line.
He's indefensible on this issue.

"They have recently released a new album called Endgame, but Dave didn't want to talk about this, instead he wanted to talk about his former band Metallica and how he got kicked out"
and later
"only time will tell if Dave will ever let it go and enjoy his success with his band Megadeth"
Dave is a lot off things, but he isn't a liar. He's always told it like it is, even way back when he was in Metallica. James didn't talk into the mike, it was Dave the entire time! So this story is bullshit, served in an ice cream cone.

It's well past time that the younger generation took the bit to the teeth and forged a "new" trend in music sales.
Internet music = death of music as we know it.
Business' don't last long when people are taking their product for free. Would you buy gas/petrol/beer/food if you could get it free...risk free?
Endgame album sales and their rapid decline over 4 weeks show this. Labels aren't going to waste money promoting an album that is free to download.
You, yes all of YOU, must promote the need to spend a few dollars and keep this album alive. The days of record sales ( and thus record deals) are lost unless you young fans pick up a torch and hold it high.
The old farts are still spending money on their favorite albums
Go without a few burgers and support your band!!

Like I said, Dave has always spoke his mind. The problem is, EVERYONE ASK HIM ABOUT METALLICA. And that's all that they want to hear. So they provoke him, (and provoking Dave is not good for anyone) ... Blabbermouth is provoking him right now. Of course he could say no comment, but that's not his style. Not to mention that saying no comment makes him seem like a prick (whether or not you believed that before hand).
it is the journalists and fans who keep this going. I mean look at how fast and wide-spread the big four tour rumor happened! But I decided to read this one...all I see is the headlines of some new drama everyday with Dave...and I knew it as soon as I read this, I regretted opening it up....it seems to me that Dave has been mentally scarred by the Metallica thing, and now hes in his late 40's he has become a bitter, twisted, mentally damaged individual.
Like someone above me said, he will end up in the nuthouse, sooner or later, unless he really gets some professional help. Hes very talented and has achieved so much with Megadeth, but it seems hes never satisfied and remains bitter.....sad really.

Bands have to worry about lack of promotion because everyone steals albums now. It's no more complex than that.
Record companies don't invest money in promoting something when they know its going to be stolen. It's like buying a set of $10,000 rims, parking it in Compton and expecting them still to be there when you get back.
In the end it just creates a vicious cycle. The band doesn't get promoted, so they don't sell albums, the band gets dropped from their label. Actually, its not even a cycle, because the band gets F'd in the end.

I respect Dave as a straight talker too but that defence simply doesn't hold up - because it's chicken and egg. They ask because he responds in opinionated detail. Journalists want sensationalism - and he gives it to them. He shouldn't and he only has himself to blame. His bitterness is biting him in the ass yet again.
Remember him going on record a few weeks ago stating that he would walk out of interviews if Metallica was brought up? Well why doesn't he start doing it if he is the victim every time? He hasn't done it once.
He's been in the business long enough to know that what he says on taped and filmed record will be published. The morality of journalism isn't an issue here - don't feed the lions.

He's always been surrounded by controversy - and pretty much, it's been self inflicted, but we all know that these 'news' sites spin stuff just to generate interest. Guaranteed, Dave stories get the most replies on this site.
I think he's great - just as messed up as the next guy - I'm sure if I trawl through here and (mis)quote people's posts most of us would look like bitter twisted individuals. So, Dave, he's a great guy, just speaks his mind and people read or spin whatever they want out of what he says.
Endgame is a great album... and the stuff about Roadrunner is nothing new - they messed up in the US and Dave has said that all along.
Megadeth will be signed to a new label and the next album will have a cool song with Dave spitting bile about Roadrunner... (remember songs like Liar or Hook in Mouth) - I think he should call it 'Tools of the Trade' (dedicated to RR)

This is all really pretty clear if you've been paying attention. Prior to the release of Endgame in the USA, the rumors started about inferior promotion. Release day came, and there were numerous reports of retailers not having product to sell. Rumors continued about lack of ongoing promotion from Roadrunner. Mustaine expresses his disappointment on his band's forum.
Blabbermouth, which is owned by Roadrunner, has been posting the most damning headlines possible based on out-of-context snippets of pretty average promotional interviews, some of which are months old. Blabbermouth sycophants lap it up like mother's milk. End result? Make Mustaine look like a bitchy, out-of-touch middle aged man and distract attention from Roadrunner's failures. Simple question---how many other metal news sites have the same tone and volume to their Megadeth coverage? Nope.

A year later he tours with Slayer because obviously money can compromise christian values. The headlines to Dave's interviews are getting crazier and crazier, I don't even bother reading them anymore. Is he actually crazy or just trying to sell albums? How come he just hasn't put an unofficial 'don't ask about Metallica' clause in his interviews--like 20 years ago? That would weed out all these shitty hack interviewers and the credible interviewers wouldn't feel obligated to get into the Metallica thing. Its old, its played out. Jesus Christ fuck shit fuck I can't believe this shit still gets stirred up. I didn't even bother picking up the new Megadeth because all of this bullshit.

I do think that all xtians are the same in at least one respect: They are all fucking delusional about their Sky-Daddy and his "son" Jeebus.
Having said that, I do agree with you about it being meaningless as far as him being pissed off. Whether I think he is a big baby, or a total fool about "hexing" people, it doesn't necessarily say anything about his religion.
But in a broader philosophical sense, it does make him look like a run of the mill xtian hypocritic, since xtians profess forgiveness and turning the other cheek as core tenets of their beliefs. Wanting to put someone in the hospital for merely interviewing him, well, that doesn't seem too "xtian" to me.

It doesn't matter the reason that they dropped promotion on it, the fact is that they did it because the head of Roadrunner threatened to sue their management if they didn't resign with the label. As you can clearly see Dave isn't intimidated by anyone, Dave would have beaten Nathan Gales sorry ass.
Whether or not anyone likes the album or the band or otherwise, the fact of the matter is that Roadrunner dropped the ball by not doing their job. Do any of you stop working because you lose respect for the company that you work for? These days I doubt anyone would. The reason they can get away with it is because that kind of thing is difficult to prove in court.
The saddest thing is that you've all become puppets for Blabbermouth, believeing absolutely everything that they tell you.

I think it reveals more about the record label 'Roadrunner' than it does about Dave. I cannot comprehend how some people actually defend this corporate corruption, they take peoples talent & then they slowly try to diminish someones chracter, to the point were they cause emotional retorts, as specifically in this case, they know Dave wears his heart on his sleeve & they will be guaranteed a reaction.
Dave doesn't need this label, infact no one needs this label.

If I am not mistaken, this was the same interview where the journalist was told beforehand that Metallica questions were off limits, but it was Dave himself who brought them up and started talking about them. As much as I like Megadeth, I just ignore what Dave says, because I don't want it to tarnish what the music is for me. Am I the only one that cann discern the difference between Metallica and Megadeth? Is it impossible to love both bands as much as the other and let the music speak for itself.?

Although 72,000 is pretty damn good, especially for this type of band at this day and age. Kiss hit 108,000 and that was hyped much more and getting radio play. Neither will be getting my money, it is going to Slayer next month.

Funny how he's getting at Roadrunner for the albums sales. If anything, RR probably improved the sales. I think he needs to understand that he could release the album of his career but it would still only shift a few hundred thousand copies. It's not the early 90's anymore.

Roadrunner used to be a label for underground music. It used to be respected for being bold in signing such bands as Obituary, Sepultura, Fear Factory, Suffocation and Deicide. But they have long since screwed over those bands and dove into the mainstream, as everyone knows or should know, the music industry is all about making money, and mostly that money is being made by the people running it and not the artists themselves. This label did an about-face and now has some of the gayest crap of any label. Dave is right, he should not have trusted himself on this one.

And dissing Roadrunner? He can go to hell. This whole Blabbermouth thing has been free promotion for Endgame for the past 6 months. What else did he want Roadrunner to do? Make a commercial? Take out a :30 minute block on NBC? There has been all kinds of radio and web promotion for Endgame. Even a really good music video. The fans bought it. It charted quite well. Roadrunner is using Dave to get hits on blabbermouth. Its a hell of a lot cheaper than continuing to promote Endgame. Blabbermouth may not reflect the views of RR but I'd damn sure bet some cash gets kicked upstairs. Why do you think there is a comments section? People will hit a story 5 times instead of just once. Isn't Roadrunner the same label that dropped Machine Head and then touted their album as the Master of Puppets of this generation? Then they went ahead and repacked that album, along with lots of other bands albums. I'm pretty sure that their main promotional and advertising work is only done on here and maybe a random magazine or two.
Roadrunner was cool before they were bought out by Warner Bros.

Megadeth has it's loyal fan base. Record the albums yourself and sell it direct to the droogies via Megadeth.com or on tour. Hire people you can trust to handle everything. It's gotten to the point where I refuse to spend another penny on Megadeth, regardless of how good the album is (won't even download it for free, streamed it on their myspace and that was it). If he didn't alienate people he would be doing a lot better.
And I bet that Roadrunner will be looking to drop Megadeth soon if they can or they'll invest less time/money on Megadeth's future releases thanks to this statement.

Looks like Dave is finally at a breaking point. In my opinion the album fell down the charts because IT SUX!!!! "Critically Aclaimed"? This guys has such an overactive imagination its scary. I love Megadeth so dont get me wrong but just like everything else I decided not to buy this album because it sucks (the first MEGADETH album I have not ran out to buy the minute it came out). The album is so horrible that I will not run out to see them live. Its my personal choice an no one elses. Everyone out there can make their opinions in regards to this album but my advice would have to be borrow it and give it a listen before you go buy it. I have a better idea.....BUY THE NEW ALICE IN CHAINS......PASS ON ENDGAME!!!!

Instead of putting him in the hospital he could make the guy listen to Risk end to end. I worked in a record store at the time and we HAD to play Risk as part of some label promotion. I usually like Megadeth but that was a horrible experience. I remember at the time there was in interview and he said "It's a departure from our usual material but if the fans don't like it they know where the door is." There was no door, I had to work an 8 hour shift with that crap over and over. Eventually the manager broke contract and took it off because it sucked so bad and there were complaints from customers.
Fuck it Endgame is awesome and very excited about seeing them next month in Toronto.

endage sounds good, production, sound and playing wise however it's not THAT good, from a song writing point of view.
I 'd dare say, let me handle the complete creation, promotion, every aspect of an album from a big band.
I 'd push them to create a classic and i would market it realistically. It's sad how huge companies, with lots of muscle cannot really get things right.
