LACUNA COIL's SCABBIA: 'As An Artist, You Try To Create And Evolve All The Time' - Oct. 17, 2009
Scott Iwasaki of Deseret News recently conducted an interview with LACUNA COIL singer Cristina Scabbia. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.

On the band's new album, "Shallow Life":

"The main thing is playing live and making good records. Of course we entered the studio knowing we were going for a change. You never know where a change is going to take you. It's always a risk. You can write the same thing over and over just to please the fans. But that wouldn't be fair. As an artist, you try to create and evolve all the time."

"We entered the studio with a new energy because we knew that some of the songs were going to be completely different. And we knew that we have gained a lot of new fans, but we also knew that a lot of people that have followed us since the very first record will be kind of confused because it's not like a gothic metal album or something like that. It's definitely more rock than in the past."

On working with producer Don Gilmore (LINKIN PARK, TRAPT, AVRIL LAVIGNE, GOOD CHARLOTTE, THE VERONICAS, PEARL JAM, TRUST COMPANY, DURAN DURAN):

"He came to Milano (the band's homebase) and we played some of the songs for him. We basically worked a little bit more on polishing the songs because some parts were too long. And we worked a lot with him on the lyrics. He really taught us good lyrics are important because you have to be clear on what you are saying. And this doesn't only mean good lyrics, but also the pronunciation of the words."

On "Shallow Life" being the highest-debuting CD of LACUNA COIL's career (the disc entered the Billboard 200 at No. 16):

"We were hoping to get a result like that. We didn't really know what was going to happen, especially right now since (CD) sales are so down compared to the past. We were absolutely pleased, being a band from Italy."

She's hot. Her band is terrible.

End of story.

are always a few steps behind the mainstream they so desperately want to break into. Just as nu-metal was fallling by the wayside commercially, they decide to heavily downtune for 'Karmacode'. Then when Linkin Park go out of style, they enlist the production services and Don Gilmore to create an album that sounds very 2004-2005.

Decent band, but they are kind of clueless at the same time.

Someone made a good call about them being about 4 years behind the current rock "trend".

That said, Cristina Scabbia is an amazingly talented vocalist who really brings it live; I saw them open for Type O Negative in...2002 maybe? And I can say that without a doubt, there's no backtracking on her vocals or any garbage. She's the real thing.

Yeah she's hot, but what does that have to do with her talent? Metal is music for ugly, socially maladjusted people anyhow. Myself included.

So anyhow, my bet is that their next album features the more power-metalish style of their first record, since Dragonforce is the current hip thing in metal.

I would like to see Lacuna Coil move on and have her become the main and only voice of the band. I think it's time. I have seen them live multiple times and the only excitement is when she sings. Nothing against the other vocalist.

it is a bit dated. Hope the next one is better.

The success of Evanescence will never be duplicated not even by Ben himself.

Btw...Evanescence is the ONLY band on this site to be able to put up a news story that we can't comment on.

I think you guys peed in Amy's butt once too many times.

I think some of you need girlfriends...

As for the album it does suck except for one or two songs. Hopefully, their next album is better and includes some of their older sound.

"...he really taught us good lyrics are important..."

lyrics to I Like It:
I'm not going to be in your parade, cause I don't like it.
You think I'm a dirty little game, you think I like it.
You made up this fantasy with me, but I don't like it.
I want you to get away from me, that's how I like it.
How do you like it?

WOW, some real wordsmith lyrical geniuses in that bunch.
