TONY IOMMI Undergoing Stem Cell Treatment For Damaged Hand - Oct. 22, 2009
Legendary heavy metal guitarist Tony Iommi (HEAVEN & HELL, BLACK SABBATH) was a guest on the October 20, 2009 edition of BBC Radio 2's "The Radcliffe And Maconie Show". The program is now available or streaming at this location. (Note: The Iommi interview begins around the one-hour, 10-minute mark.)

Regarding recent reports that he was due to undergo surgery on his hand, Iommi said, "I've had this problem with my hand and I've had this stem cell treatment on it. [I have to wear a guard on my hand] to stop me from banging it. But it's coming on good. The cartilage [was worn out between] the joints, and the joints [were] rubbing on the joints. It was bone to bone and it was getting a bit painful. And I've done it for quite awhile — 18 months — and I've been taking anti-inflammatories and painkillers. But I just wanted to stop doing it, 'cause it upsets your stomach, and get it done. This is the latest thing, so we'll see if it works."

According to ArmyTimes, stem cells are cells found in all multicellular organisms that can renew themselves through division and morph into a diverse range of other specialized cell types.

A stem cell is a sort of "beginner cell" that has not yet assumed a specific function or form such as bone, blood or nerve. The younger a person is, the more stem cells are present; they start to diminish around age 20, when most people finish growing.

As previously reported, Iommi will be IRON MAIDEN frontman Bruce Dickinson's guest on Friday, October 23 during Bruce's weekly BBC 6 Music radio program, dubbed "The Bruce Dickinson Friday Rock Show". Listen to the broadcast live via the Internet between 9:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. (midnight) U.K. time at BBC.co.uk.

The management for HEAVEN & HELL vocalist Ronnie James Dio released a statement to BLABBERMOUTH.NET on August 27 in an attempt to "quash any rumors that [the group] have broken up." The statement read in part, "Tony Iommi has to have surgery on his hand and [needs] some down time for recovery. Therefore DIO [the band] will be performing some dates in the U.K. and Europe in November/December during this time off. HEAVEN & HELL are already making plans for dates next year."

It goes without saying that Tony Iommi is a legend, and his influence on music is incalculable. Sabbath will always be the godfathers of metal. All my best hopes and wishes for a speedy recovery and for the continued entertainment of the metal world through the incredible music of Heaven & Hell. Seen them live 3 times so far. Every time has blown me away and melted my mind. Life long fan of Sabbth/Dio, ever since I was a teen in the 80's. My all time favorite band, Sabbath fronted by DIO. I hope they put out another album soon. "The Devil You Know" was doomy and intense. Some people did not get it or understand it. But as soon as I saw them live at the LA Forum playing the new song "The Devil Cried" from the Sabbath Dio years compilation, I understood. It opened up my head to the direction they were heading in. I love it, makes all the sense in the world to me.

That forum Heaven & Hell show was one of the most intense shows I've ever seen. The band and the crowd was really fucking intense. I saw gods play that night. Saw them later at Irvine and then later at the Greek. All three shows each had their own vibe. The Forum show was when they had first showed up as Heaven & Hell and people went fucking nuts! It was great.

The guy's jaded and full of himself. He's over 60 and still carries some sort of chip on his shoulder, just like Oz said. Not gracious or charismatic. It's a miracle someone like Dio can stomach the guy. I've always been a supporter, but after seeing him a few months ago, I'm not much of one. He's a great guitarist, but doesn't think things through.

From the many people who have met him and said the exact opposite of what your saying over many years, I'm inclined to take your experience as an isolated incident (with no details provided). I'm sorry you had a bad experience. Everyone has their bad days, even metal legends. But I would not make up my mind so completely due to one encounter of someone like this. Who knows really. And, honestly, as long as he gives us great music, his attitude, etc., is not a big concern of mine. Its always great when a music legend can say all the right things and be gracious. But some days I'm sure some just don't give a shit, just like anyone else. They may be gods on stage per-se, but off stage, what's the difference really except the mileage?

This guy is a fucking legend, anyone refuting this fact is a trisomic moron or an uneducated 15 years old who will eventually see reality when he grows up.

I have the same point of view regarding a "bad day", but it was worse than that.

Anyone who has an attitude or even gets confrontational with strangers has a problem. It explains his problems with Oz, getting divorced over and over (4 times I believe), and having Dio leave him twice, in the past.

He seems so jaded, it's ridiculous. Totally lacking joy unless he's pandered to. Typical rock star bs along with the fact that he's probably not all there after doing so many drugs over the course of his life.

Again, I don't hate the guy, but I'm let down by the lack of care he has, when most of us would kill to be so fortunate.

I wonder what he would say about what YOU were doing during that incident? I think I have an idea--don't bother to protest with some nonsense about your being just a doting fan.
