CHRIS CORNELL's 'Never Far Away' Track Reworked Without TIMBALAND - Oct. 27, 2009
According to FMQB.com, Explore Music's Alan Cross has revealed that some Canadian music types have been reworking the tracks from former AUDIOSLAVE/SOUNDGARDEN singer Chris Cornell's latest solo album, "Scream", into rock songs.

Michael Friedman, who works in Los Angeles in music licensing and placement, told Cross, "I heard some 'Black Hole Sun' greatness deep within some of the songs. I also got to know Chris as a friend. I ended up calling Jordan Zadorozny [of the Canadian indie band BLINKER THE STAR, who co-wrote for HOLE's 'Celebrity Skin' album and more]. I flew him down to L.A. and had him listen to some of the tracks in hopes that he could remix them somehow."

Friedman received permission from Cornell to pass Zadorozny's re-done version of the song "Never Far Away" along to Cross, which you can hear below. Friedman says the track is "a total re-recording, not a remix."

Cornell recorded "Scream" with R&B/hip-hop hitmaker Timbaland. Critical and fan response to the disc has been less than enthusiastic, with Rolling Stone magazine calling it "a strange mutation."

"Never Far Away" reworked "rock" version:

On one hand I want to like the reworked version, but to me the music sounds like something that Daughtry would sing to, not Chris Cornell. Then again, the original version sounds like something Jay-Z would rap over more than Cornell.

In other words, they are both awful.

Not a fan of either, but I think it's cool that you can interpret the song in different ways.

As much as Audioslave differed from Soundgarden this is a departure from both. I like it...it's original. PS Cornell was doing some rap? Really? Glad I missed that!

Still not a great song but better than it was I guess. The vocals are still too auto-tuned and thus hard on the ears.

Fuck the haters! I have so much respect for Cornell for doing an album like that, it shows true artistic integrity. Just like Bowie, he continues to put out albums and expand and improve as a musician. Not all will be great, bu that's art man.

I really love old Soundgarden, nothing compares but Chris' voice lends itself to any genre, who cares if he worked with an r & b producer. and who the fuck cares what Rolling Stone has to say. I like all music =Black metal and all metal for that matter (not nu-metal) grunge-punk-noise etc... It's cool he's so versatile.

Too bad it always comes down to Rock vs everything else...

I guess you can't win when you have broader. more eclectic tastes than your audience....

Just scream over distorted guitars for the rest of you career Chris...

I get that he wants to try new things and all, but everything after 'Euphoria Morning' has sucked big, sweaty balls. Hell, 'Euphoria Morning' was radically different from anything he did with Soundgarden, but it had some amazingly well-written songs and his performance on "When I'm Down" may be one of his finest hours as a singer.

It's not about style so much as quality, or more importantly the lack thereof. Come on, Chris... you can do WAY better!

the original was different. the new one sounds like rock. they both work, but the original had an edge because it was unfamiliar. of course on a metal site, the new one is going to be applauded more, but i can appreciate the old one for the fact that it has a unique or at least more unique sound - regardless of what that is. and someone mentioned above that cornell has a versatile voice and i agree he does.

however, all of that being said, i don't really like any of the music he has ever put out much, except a couple of songs here and there.

I will never buy anything with Chris Cornell's name on it until he puts out something new with Soundgarden. He's a sell out and has disrespected his fans...you know, US!!! You guys should check out his brother Peter Cornell's band BLACK MARKET RADIO. He's still a rocker.

it's interesting to hear it redone, but it's still just a schlock radio song. totally beneath Cornell's calibur.

and the idea that Scream was some kind of experimental art is so ridiculous. teaming up with Timbaland and making a Justin Timberlake pop album has to be the LEAST experimental, LEAST dangerous, LEAST unique thing ever. Now, if Cornell decided to do a non-rock album, with electronics and such? Fantastic! Work with Trent Reznor, or Brian Eno, or some other actual experimental guy with integrity and do something TRULY adventurous. Not just top 10 pop songs. Don't sugar coat the fact that he attempted a massive sell out.

I still love the guy, and his voice right now is better than it's been since Euphoria Morning (one of the best albums you could ever get btw).

It's time for more Soundgarden type stuff though. Pick up a guitar, tune it weird, and get crackin'. Soundgarden could do whatever they wanted, it was much more diverse than "Scream."

Sounds decent. I actually like the original version, its something different from Cornell's usual territory, but the rock version is cool too. I wouldn't mind seeing more rock versions of those tracks, but I wouldn't take them as replacements, just reinterpretations.

And no Soundgarden reunion please, I don't want to hear the same old songs with Cornell straining to keep up with his former self. I like him exploring different territory. He said the Scream album was pretty much an experiment, which has been the case with his solo career anyway, so I'm psyched to see whats in store for the next record.

Chris Cornell is a fucking knob jockey. I was a fan of Soundgarden but got rid of everything I possessed when he start hanging out with gobshites like Timbaland. Its a fuckin disgrace to music and to be honest, a Soundgarden "reunion" would be disasterous to say the least.
