ZEPPELIN Bassist On Why PLANT-Less Tour Failed To Materialize: We Couldn't Agree On Singers
- Oct. 28, 2009
|
|
Bassist John Paul Jones has told BBC News that there were plans in 2008 for the original LED ZEPPELIN members to hit the road without frontman Robert Plant — under a different name — which were later abandoned. Now, John Paul Jones who is currently playing with THEM CROOKED VULTURES, also featuring FOO FIGHTERS' Dave Grohl and Josh Homme from QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE — said things have worked out for the best. " Jimmy [ Page] and I rehearsed a bit with Jason Bonham and we couldn't really agree on singers and that fell by the wayside," he said. "Then this came along and to be honest, I'm really happy." THEM CROOKED VULTURES made their first official single, called "New Fang", available to radio stations on Monday (October 26). The track is also streaming at the trio's web site and is taken from the band's self-titled debut album, which is due for release on November 17. Meanwhile, following their first North American tour of mostly East Coast cities earlier this month, the group will next head west for four gigs in November. The band will perform on November 17 at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles, November 19 at the Fox Theater in Oakland, November 21 at the Paramount Theater in Seattle, and November 22 at the Roseland Theater in Portland, Oregon. Tickets go on sale this weekend for all four shows. THEM CROOKED VULTURES will head to the U.K. and Europe in December, followed by Australia and New Zealand in January.

...well, deciding not to tour without Plant. That poseur from Alter Bridge was a worse idea than Coverdale/Page. I'm still on the fence with this new group. It sounds too much like QOTSA.

It would be nice to see these three and maybe Dave Coverdale, Steve Tyler or the like out on tour one day but maybe as a new group, not a Zeppelin rehash. Unfortunately John Bonham is deceased but Plant isn't, it just seems silly in this situation to have a reunion or a tour without him.

what's cool for Jonesy is that he has a current release, released to the public and it's something that's being given a massive push by the record company as well.
This new stuff is a bit too much like QOTSA though.
I guess, Josh is one of those guys that writes a certain way(vocals, guitar riffs). I must gather though that they all are writing in this band.

thinks this will be fine album but why are everyone so happy when Dave Grohl does something? the first 2 Foo Fighters albums are good and the rest is just ok and gotten worse. and there are many better drummers out there then him. and of course Plant wont be screaming like he's 20 and so what? he still has better voice then most of the guys thats been on the charts the last few years or so. at least he can sing or tries to sing.most metal singers today are to afraid to sing and the hard rock singers all sound the same. but i agree Myles Kennedy is a fine singer and Alter Bridge is much bettter then Creed ever was.

...but I was hoping for something more. Maybe they're just playing it safe with that first single. I'll check out the rest of the record for sure. Blackthorned, Myles Kennedy is not that great. Poseur was a bit harsh of me to say, but I just have a strong dislike of anything Creed-related. I listened to some of their music and it's just generic crap in my book.

If youve heard/seen any of the led zep reunion then youd see that plant has definitely still got it.
on TCV - seem a bit too qotsa it terms of sound but rhythm section is wicked. i woulda liked to see Dave do some vocals aswell but I spose its hard behind the drums.

I wanted it to happen after the big gig the other year but it's obvious to me that a Zep tour just shouldn't happen. The only reason I would even want to go would be for the nostalgia factor.
Crooked Vultures sounds ok from what I've heard. I'm a huge QOTSA fan but this might fall a little flat. I guess we'll see.

Myles Kennedy is the most down to earth guy in the rock business. And his voice is simply stellar. Just listen to his vocal range on songs like Summergirl or 12/31 (with his former band The Mayfield Four).

like it is a bad thing? I saw TCV in concert and most of their stuff does sound like QOTSA but I love that - I will take that over Foo Fighters sounding any day.
I agree, leave the Zeppelin legacy intact until somebody really needs the money and then do it with Plant only.

WTF y'all? QOTSA was more than Songs for the Deaf. Just cuz Homme and Grohl is involved doesn't make this QOTSA spin off. To me, all three members' quality bleeds and blends very nicely. I love QOTSA but you can't say the same about QOTSA.

Myles is the real deal. Check out Alter Bridge jamming on Kashmir on youtube and you'll know why they considered him. He's the best singer in rock right now and a hell of a cool guy.

Lets see, band quits playing when their drummer dies, the least noticeable member of most bands. Granted, a spectacular drummer, but still could have easily went on. Now they want to replace the MOST noticeable member. Duh. Walk away.

Myles Kennedy is a cool guy. Very humble for a dude that has accomplished what he has musically. He would have sung Led Zep with the greatest respect. But you know it's ok that Led Zeppelin is gone. I am quite sick of these nostalgia tours. Unless a band can put out a high quality album (HEAVEN & HELL: The Devil You Know) and tour to support it. Just stay retired, don't embarass yourselves and let us put on the older albums and be blown away by their artistic GREATNESS!

Seriously? Have you never listened to Zeppelin or do you talk out of your ass for shits and giggles? Bonham was as vital a part of the signature Zeppelin sound as Plant and Page. Dude had a fucking massive drum sound that nobody has matched. His versatility remains unparalleled. You think Zeppelin could have pulled off the eclectic sound that they had without a drummer who could switch styles at the drop of a hat and INNOVATE not just EMULATE? Plus, you know, maybe the other three members of the band were bummed out about losing a friend? Oh yeah I forgot, musicians are robots and not human beings. I'm not trying to rant, but the stupidity or outright audacity of some people on this site defies logic.
