EARTH CRISIS Frontman Talks Straight Edge - Oct. 28, 2009
Hart Seely of Syracuse.com recently conducted an interview with Karl Buechner, lead singer for seminal straight edge band EARTH CRISIS. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Syracuse.com: What turned you on to straight edge?

Karl: I was involved with sports and music. I saw kids from an early age, whom I grew up skateboarding with, get into drugs and alcohol. They started skating less and being less enthusiastic about the things they had been passionate about. It was terrifying to watch people I cared about become drug addicts or alcoholics. ... In essence, I was scared straight.

Syracuse.com: People have called EARTH CRISIS the most famous band from Syracuse that Syracuse doesn't know about. You buy that?

Karl: Well, we've got a lot of loyal fans here. We've played a show at the Lost Horizon this summer. It was incredible. People flew in from different parts of the country to support it. ... It was a really powerful experience for us.

Syracuse.com: This year, straight edge turns 28. Getting old?

Karl: It's incredible for us to see how much it's grown. So far this year, Earth Crisis has toured the states, Canada, 12 countries in Europe, three countries in South America, and we're on our way to Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Japan in January. It's worldwide. And I think, unfortunately, there are more people out there whose lives have been adversely affected by substance addictions, and they are gravitating to straight edge.

Syracuse.com: How did Syracuse affect the movement?

Karl: What happened here defined it for the future.

Syracuse.com: What do you mean?

Karl: When it came to the aggression of the music, and the seriousness of the way that things were taken — a lot of that came right from here.

Syracuse.com: Did people locally understand what was going on?

Karl: No. In fact, we didn't know it could have the influence outside of here that it has had.

Syracuse.com: Did they oppose you?

Karl: Well, we weren't necessarily welcomed into clubs, that's for sure. I mean, the clubs would rather have a metal band, which was going to draw a crowd that's going to drink. They'd make more money. So we were definitely not welcomed in, and we were not welcomed by any major labels, either. I mean, straight edge is still essentially a grassroots movement. Yet we're out there, touring the world. I feel as though we've been locked out, in some ways, but you know what? That's fine. We'll do it ourselves. We always have.

(verse 1)

A-rockin' on rock n' a-fartin...
fartin' outta my butt...
Fartin in my pants n' a rockin'
Smellin' my own fart...

Drinkin' the juice that comes outta my farts
Eatin' some stupid crap
Sniffin' the air that smells of farts
I love to rock n' roll

(chorus)
Rock a fart
Fart a fart
Rockin' n' fartin
Heavy Metal Farts o' rock
yeah...

On the back of a garbage truck
Fartin' in the wind
Smellin' that fart n listenin to SlipKnot
Fart'a, fart'a, fart-fart-fart

Gotta take a dump but I'd rather fart
Rockin' while I'm takin a dump
I love the smell of your rock n' roll
The smell of Dio's fart...

(chorus)
Rock a fart
Fart a fart
Rockin' n' fartin
Heavy Metal Farts o' rock
yeah...

I love the heavy metal...
I love the heavy metal...
I love the heavy metal...
I love the heavy metal...

but just blanketing every single person that does drugs or drinks as wrong is highly misguided. There are many people in society that can smoke weed and be a successful adult. Just like there are plenty of alcoholic businessmen out there. Everyone handles these kinds of things differently, and who's to say a straight-edgers life is better and more enjoyable than anyone elses? But I guess if they feel strongly about a topic, who am I to say they should stand for anything else? There are a lot of people out there that suck at doing drugs

I do like the music video though. Its more about the retardation of our court system and the corruption in law enforcement.

and i think 'straight edge lifestyle' better suit 'weak' minded people that are prone to vice.

The rest of us can enjoy drink/drugs in moderation.

I say "fuck all" to hard street drugs and prescription drugs. Weed is fine. I don't smoke anymore because of testing at work, but there are plenty of gifted, talented and influential people that have partaken of the herb, from Bob Marley to Michael Phelps. I'm not saying that weed is what made any of those people great, but it certainly didn't impede their success. Yeah, Phelps did get suspended for a hot minute and he lost a couple of endorsements, but he's stanky rich and in great health all the same. It's not recommended for working class schmucks such as myself to push that same envelope.

As far as alcohol is concerned, I crack open a frosty cold 40-ounce a couple of times a week to help me unwind. Nothing wrong with that in my estimation.

If you don't wanna drink or take drugs then that's all well and good. When you go labelling yourself as sXe however it's clear that it's all about the image. I don't eat liquorish but I don't feel the need to stick a fucking label on it.

Also, every sXe person I've ever spoken to bangs on about how they 'don't need drugs to have fun'. It would be more convincing if I ever saw a single one of them fucking smile.

Living a straight edge lifestyle is a respectable way to live, however the problem I see with the straight edge lifestyle is that it became too trendy.

I live a straight edge lifestyle now but in the past I definitely enjoyed the alcohol. I was never one for weed though but alcohol was my vice. I was not addicted but I did enjoy it.

When I was a drinker I used to make fun of straight edge kids. I even bought a shirt from one of my favorite hardcore bands that had Straight Edge on it and wore it as my official drinking shirt.

I'll never claim to be straight edge because to me it would be hypocritical to make fun of it and then later live by it. So I wont ever claim edge but I do live the lifestyle. I hate the people that feel the need to advertise it. I don't think the movement should be advertised and I don't think we should be aggressors pushing it on others. Theres a lot of idiots in the movement just like there are a lot of idiots with all other walks of life as well.

"I was involved with sports and music."

20 years ago when people still cared about this garbage the whole straight-edge/hardcore scene was just a bunch of boneheads who got cut from the varsity football team and needed to vent their rage by bumming out music fans.

Hardcore was absolutely brilliant in its day, but since the nineties has largely been generic, unlistenable, preachy, macho-posing garbage. There is nothing more boring and played out.

Hey that's cool if you don't drink or do drugs. Not many people can do that and I totally respect that choice. Bragging about it or using it as a soapbox to preach, lessens your respectability.

If you smoke weed, do drugs, well...I hope it doesn't cost you your job, kids, family, respect, freedom, or your health. I wouldn't ever do drugs but I also won't be preaching how better I am than you. We all fight the same battles.

proudlikeagod has it right, but in my "professional opinion" sXe kids are pussies, period. pleanty of people live a sober lifestyle and they don't need a group of people validating their "struggle". Weed is great, and if you like to drink, so be it. and again, for my friend ThrAshatastic, you're a pussy.
