NIRVANA 2002: Full-Length Track Available For Free Download - Oct. 29, 2009
Relapse Records will release a collection of recordings from the Swedish death metal outfit NIRVANA 2002. The highly underrated yet influential band only released a series of demos and splits during their existence through the late '80s and early '90s. This collection, "Recordings 89-91", will compile almost all of the band's recorded works onto one disc, including previously unreleased songs and a brand new remix of their legendary demo "Disembodied Spirits".

To download an MP3 of the song "Mourning", a brutal flayer-of-minds cut that originally appeared on the ultra-cult C.B.R. Records compilation "Projections of a Stained Mind", go to DecibelMagazine.com. The track can also be streamed using the audio player below.

NIRVANA 2002's vocalist/guitarist Orvar Säfström (who later joined ENTOMBED) commented on "Recordings 89-91": "It's been 20 years since the first recordings on this CD were made. Last summer three middle aged guys sneaked into an old rehearsal space in Edsbyn, Sweden. They shared a quart of rum and played old school death metal all night. That night I felt it all coming back to me. The excitement and the all-out exhilarating fury of playing in a death metal band. I felt alive. I felt like a kid again."

"Recordings 89-91" features extensive liner notes from Säfström in addition to an introduction from Tomas Lindberg (AT THE GATES, DISFEAR). This collection will be available on CD and a limited run of LPs.

"Recordings 89-91" is set for a November 10 North American release, November 16 internationally, and is available for pre-order at this location.

NIRVANA 2002 audio samples can be heard online now via the band's MySpace page.

Nice. I've been waiting for a proper release of these demos, I have them all on cassette.

THRASHMONGER - do you not appreciate early Entombed, Grave, Carnage, Dismember, etc.? These guys ended up forming some of those bands and were a major player in development of the Swedish Death Metal sound. You don't have to like them, but they are worthy of respect.

No one seems to understand this band had to add the 2002 to their name as there was a new Nirvana poping out on a much bigger label, back then.

Nirvana 2002 is awesome.

This band started out in the 80's and were part of the first wave of Swedish death metal. They set the standard together with Nihilist, Grotesque and others. They quit about the same time "Nevermind" came out. When they're (finally!) releasing a compilation of all their old material, why the hell would they wanna make up a new name now, almost 20 years after the fact?!

So face it. This is Nirvana 2002. They had a weird name and kicked more ass than most current metal bands COMBINED. Learn your metal history or shut the hell up.

You know the piece of shit hair metal band called Slaughter that MTV just to play all the time?

Well, one of the true classic death metal bands were Slaughter from Canada. They were one of the bands that created the genre together with Possessed, Death and Repulsion.

Now tell me all you complainers.... does all this mean that Slaughter from Canada were crap, just because som sissy band used the same name?

Grow up suckers.

is mentally challenged. Nirvana was formed before Nirvana 2002, but only by one year. To act like they took their name from the Seattle outfit is incredibly stupid. I doubt very much a band from Sweden knew about a recently formed band from the US that didn't even release anything until a year after forming.

Yeah Barry, you're right about CannibalHolocaust. Talk about outing yourself as a full blown moron. That guy just showed the world he knows squat about metal.

Speaking of bands sharing names. There were two Slayer back in the day. They both started around the same time but one of them backed down and added S.A. to the name (they were from San Antonio) just like Nirvana added 2002.

An example of not doing things right was British thrash band Sabbath. Everyone uses that name as a short for Black Sabbath, and it's not like they'd never heard of BS.

that was pretty harsh of me. I still don't like it, I'm not a fan of that Swedish death sound, but no one deserves to be compared to that "other" band.

Carry on.

CannibalHolocaust:
Just shut up. Pretty please. No one cares what you have to say. Ever. OK?

Rollerboy69:
Nirvana 2002 not only started in the 87 but folded a looong time ago. You would need a time machine to change the name. If they were playing now, I'm quite sure they'd call themselves something different. But I fail to see how they (or you) could possibly change the fact that they used this name 20 years ago? Do you really think a compilation of demos from a band that quit that long ago should be released under a new name?
That's like saying all Led Zeppelin albums should be called something else.

Oh and by the way. Nihilist (pre-Entombed) changed their name because a US band were also called Nihilist. That didn't stop them from using Nihilist on their demo collection last year.

This is my last post in this thread. Some metal hating poser morons will keep nagging. The rest of us will buy this CD.
