SLAYER Frontman On Retirement Rumors: Being Away From Family So Much Doesn't Get Any Easier - Oct. 29, 2009
Rob Fitzpatrick of U.K.'s The Guardian recently conducted an interview with SLAYER members Tom Araya (bass, vocals) and Kerry King (guitar). A few excerpts from the chat follow below.

The Guardian: Do you ever do rubbish shows?

Araya: "Oh yeah. The first one's usually rubbish. You come off and look at each other and say, 'You know what, I sucked!' We have to start straight off at 150% and go straight to 200%. If we start at even 148%, we're fucked. If we're not all together from the off then half of us will never catch up."

The Guardian: You must sound bloody awful if you're not together.

Araya: "We do, yeah! That's exactly how we sound. We have a new song called 'Psychopathy Red' which is pretty intense, the first verse was great, but then I lost the intro to the second verse and I couldn't catch up at all. I had to lose that whole verse and just wait for the third. To be honest, it wasn't long to wait and no one will notice anyway."

On whether there is any truth to the rumors that SLAYER is planning on retiring soon:

Araya: "We don't know yet. I know this much: being away from your family so much doesn't get any easier. I've been married for 15 years. I have a 13-year-old daughter and a 10-year-old son and I want to make up for the all the time I wasn't there. I have nieces and nephews I've barely seen. This life demands so much of you, personally and physically. I honestly don't know how I did the first 15 years of SLAYER. How did I get so fucking wasted then play every fucking night? Then, immediately after playing, do it all over again. How the fuck did we all do that?"

The Guardian: Are you as fearless as you were at 20? Do you want it all as much?

Araya: [pauses for a long time] "Er …" [pauses again] "Wow!" [takes another 10 seconds] "It's not so much 'Do you still want it?' as much as a question of 'How much more are you willing to take?' There's so much shit that goes on behind the scenes, not just the bureaucratic bullshit that goes on with the label or with touring, but the other, bigger stuff. It's the four different personalities in the band trying to get along. Sometimes we clash, that's normal. But after 28 years you do wonder if you've grown together or apart."

On what he thinks is the greatest record ever made:

King: "That's a real sit-down-and-a-cognac question, isn't it? VAN HALEN's first record is amazing. Sure, it's rock'n'roll, but it introduced the world to what the electric guitar could do. SABBATH's 'Sabotage' is very, very heavy. AC/DC's 'Powerage', JUDAS PRIEST's 'Stained Class', some MAIDEN too …"

On what he has learnt about human nature after nearly 30 years on the road:

King: "I've learnt what not to say. Why set someone off? Some bands can't get over something someone said 15 years ago and split up, but when we go home, we just scatter. I don't need to call them. After all, what am I going to say?"

I think retirement is the best option if all we can expect from Slayer is half assed demo grade songs.

Hahaha, funny comments here...

Btw, If WPB is the new standard in metal production, I guess we're fucked...

Andy Sneap, Tue Madsen, Machine, Jens Bogren, Fredrik Nordström and many other masters in metal mixing better quit when two of the most influential bands in the genre prefer lo-fi demolike quality sound.

What the fuck is going on ?!?

Is crap/flat/clippy sound becoming the new hype ?

Anyone that actually believes in a Satan - is a deluded moron of the highest caliber. I know Slayer don't - but some of their fans are pretty impressive in the retard department.

Hate to tell you this, but Slayer were never about Satan's work...they admitted well over 20 years ago that the lyrics were just lyrics and not based on any conscious ideology.

I think they are on the way out. They are playing the biggest venues possible doing CO headlineing tours in only the major markets and marketing almost everything.

I would rather see them retire at 50 with dignity then 75 way past their prime.

is satisfy your recording contract like Metallica did, then just keep making music whenever you want, put it out whenever you want your own way and play shows whenever you want. There's not need to use a record company anymore, too much $$$ to fuck with that way, just use the best technology to record as inexpensive as possible (because the technology does exists, I use it myself) and then cut out the middle man and deliver your music directly to your fans whenever, wherever and however you want.

Dudes in the 40s should do that instead of spending unnecessary time away from their families on the road for 2 years. That shit's insane if you're no long in your 20s or early 30s.

They should have retired after Divine Intervention. They haven't been doing anything besides staining their legacy ever since.

Mainstream metal is just in a piss-poor state. Old men hanging on long after their prime, and the vacuum being filled by garbage metalcore.

why does slayer need to retire? Their last album was their highest debuting album in their career - at number 2 on the charts. World Painted Blood is slayer's best album since seasons (it might even be better) The band is more successful then they have ever been - and they are still making albums comparable to their old ones - why do they need to retire?

The guy's just hanging on at this point--Lombardo and Kerry seem ready for more, Jeff's just sort of there, but poor Tom's just squeezing out the last bits of energy he's got left. Plus I think he's getting more wary of Kerry, whom he's described as the only member in the band who is into being a 'rock star.' I think that's where the 'growing apart' comment's coming from.

To anyone who thinks Slayer's music has ANYTHING to do with satanism,I would advise reading The Satanic Bible. It is an extremely simple and non-sensical look at this black-sheep religion. It clearly defines what a satanist is and is not. What he or she believes and doesn't. You get the picture. One of the most insightful reads I have ever come across and I am sure you will not be disappointed. The satanic imagery you see with Slayer,Morbid Angel,Deicide, etc. is nothing more than a device to make $. Those artists worship the all-mighty dollar not some cloven-hoofed soul stealing figure in black.
