SLIPKNOT Frontman Confirms He Tried Out For VELVET REVOLVER
- Oct. 30, 2009
|
|
SLIPKNOT frontman Corey Taylor has confirmed that he was being considered for the singer slot in VELVET REVOLVER following the departure of Scott Weiland. Speaking to Altitude TV (see video below), Taylor said, "I had a meeting with those guys, we did some demos together, and it just didn't work — for whatever reason." He added, "It was just really cool. It was one of those things where it's like I could have got to jam with legends, man, in my opinion. But, you know, it was cool, and I still know those guys, I still hang out with them, and I still have nothing but respect." VELVET REVOLVER/ex- GUNS N' ROSES guitarist Slash was asked a few months ago by the webmaster of his official fan site if there was any truth to the rumor that Taylor was going to be the next VELVET REVOLVER singer. According to a posting on the site, Slash "said it looked like it for a minute, but they had decided against it." In his SeattleWeekly.com column, VELVET REVOLVER/ex- GUNS N' ROSES bassist Duff McKagan wrote about playing with Corey's solo band at a couple of festival shows this past summer. "You may know Corey as the lead singer from SLIPKNOT and STONE SOUR, but I know him as a guy who just likes to rock and have fun doing it," Duff said. "His band out-Loaded LOADED [ Duff's other group] as they came on stage to the 'Magnum P.I.' theme song doing a choreographed dance, and then proceeded to play 'Let's Go Crazy' by PRINCE. "They crushed it! The heavy-metal crowd was further bewildered when they saw their SLIPKNOT hero go from the theme song from 'Cheers' into 'Pig' by NINE INCH NAILS. It was absolutely superb. "To me, when you can flat-out rock and also take the piss out of yourself... then you are doing something right." Corey Taylor talking about almost joining VELVET REVOLVER:

I'm surprised they didn't jump at the opportunity to snatch up a big name. By the way how is the vocalist search coming along? It's only been two years since Weiland bailed, right?

I know his name has gotten thrown around over the years to be the new singer for Velvet revolver. He Would of been a hell of a choice for VR. They would sell tons of records and sell out shows. But i don't think that he could cope with the rest of the guys. But who knows? Bach/Slash/Duff/Sorum would make for a kick a** rock band right there.

"just like he ruined slipknot"
So anyone knew who Slipknot was before Corey Taylor joined? Or even for a good while after he was in the band? I'm not defending Slipknot or anything, I don't care for them much, but that's just a strange statement. I know they had a different vocalist for what was it, a demo or something, then he comes along and just totally lames up the awesome thing they had going. Don't think so.

They can't replace Weiland. This shouldn't even be a story but Slash will tell you - it is a story. 2 years later he remains on queer street without a condom. I say try out riotact666 - if you can get him out of his basement

I really like corey taylor as a person and as a singer but he's not for VR. I rather see him fill in for Soundgarden or Anthrax or something than VR, just cuz he doesn't have much sexiness in his vocal performance.

I don't know if three bands would have been easy to deal with for corey.
yeah slipknot and stone sour are manageable, but velvet revolver... that's a big name.
it would have been interesting to see, but i think with three bigger bands... corey would have run into trouble. it's one of those things that you see band members leave to focus on solo or side project, none of those three are really to be considered side projects, they're just too big.

1. Myles Kennedy- Although it would mean the end of Alter Bridge and a full on Creed reunion. Strike that. Alter Bridge needs to come back huge next year.
2. Chester Bennington- The guy can flat out sing, and if this means the death of Linkin Park? Hells yeah.
3. Corey Glover- I stole this one from an earlier post. One of THE most underrated rock singers ever. Too bad that they hit when they did, and the media made LC's race a novelty. Living Colour's first two records are must haves.
4. Chris Daughtry- The second record is getting no play and if he wants to remain relevant, he needs VR. Another great voice who can write great songs? Don't believe me? Check out the old Absent Element demos that came out before Idol. I saw his band several times back in the day. He's a great singer and a good guy.
5. Whatshis name from Fuel. This Riders on The Storm crap is a waste of his talent.
6. Mark Lanegan- He's the old singer for the Screaming Trees. Awesome voice, great live and can write really well.
7. Jason Ross- Singer from Seven Mary Three. Since they can't get arrested these days, I think he'd be up for it.
8. Kevin Martin- Candlebox's singer. This guy can fucking wail and the reunion isn't going great either.
9. Chris Jericho- You all will laugh, but he's as good a singer as he is a wrestler, and his ego isn't out of control. He would probably retire from active wrestling if he got the gig.
10. Or, in the same vein as number 9, VR should just go ahead and change their name to Tenacious D and be the backing band for the mighty Jack Black!!!!!!!!

Why even do it anymore? Move on... Next thing you know "VR just tried out 62 year old Elton John on vocals... He's also gonna add some gay ass piano riffs to Slash's boring rock riffs..." Let this shit go. Boring and so not Metal.

Miles Kenndy is probably your best idea on here. Alter Bridge is through with Creed back on the scene.
Bach would be the best fit. So the band would sound like Skid Roses....good, that's what we want to buy.
Whitfield Crane of Ugly Kid Joe and more recently Another Animal would also be a good fit, vocally.
I actually like the Chris Daughtry idea. I think he should have went with Fuel from the start. He needs to escape his name to some degree and the negative slant many hard rock and metqal fans put on him from Idol. It would give him that opportunity and would give Revolver a big name who actually has range.
Jack Scallion, the former Fuel singer has started a new band called Refueled with another ex-fuel member and are ready to tour.
In the end, I think it will be one of the singers from Slash's solo album, whoever they might be. I think one of the songs will be looked at like a demo for the new band. Whoever it is, they must be relatively known and they must be really able to wail. No more of this boring monotone Scotty junk. We need a guy who can sing with the like of Cornell, Bach, or Brent Smith. A no name will likely fail and spell strike three for Slash and company.

I wouldn't be surprised if Slash just said "fuckit" for the band thing, with all the ego crap going on on the inside. We're no doubt, going to see him as a sideman jamming with other bands and people now.

So if this is the case, we would have to add:
1. Andrew Stockdale- I don't like this for a couple of reasons. First, the kid has a Travis Meeks-like attitude. A little bit of buzz and it goes to his end and he ends up firing his band. Plus, his songwriting is way too mystical for a band that is in essance, a sleaze rock band. I think the album would come off like Dio era Rainbow. It would be good, but it wouldn't appeal to the mainstream. Remember, Rainbow had to make the move to Graham Bonnet to acheive real success.
2. M Shadows- Great vocalist, but I'm not sure if he would be willing to leave A7X or put them on the back burner.
3. Adam Levine- No. God No.
4. Koshi Inaba- Would make for an interesting song on a Slash solo album, but I don't think I could take a whole record that would end up sounding like a bad anime sountrack.

Could have been cool. Corey sounds pretty good on the Steel Panther tracks he's on and it's hard to sound good with lyrics like "death to papa roach, blink 182....all those fucking pussies sound like doggy-doo."
I hope VR doesn't pull a Slash and decide to have many singers, like Fergie and Nicole Scherzinger and Ozzy. Schmoe lineup. Chris Cornell could be good. Slash should have used Corey on his solo album.
