W.A.S.P.'s BLACKIE LAWLESS: I Will Never Play 'Animal (F**k Like A Beast)' Again - Oct. 30, 2009
Norway's FVN.no conducted an interview we did with W.A.S.P. mainman Blackie Lawless before the band's October 29, 2009 performance in Kristiansand. Blackie talks about his faith, why he doesnt "do the blood" anymore and why he will never perform the song "Animal (Fuck Like A Beast)" again. Watch the chat below (Windows Media). A couple of excerpts follow.

On having a pretty basic live show nowadays:

Blackie: "What you're saying is: Are you doing the blood anymore? No, I'm not doing it. I don't need that anymore, because when you're trying to get a message across to people, the image of that early show spoke so loudly, people were listening with their eyes and not their ears. We did what we thought was abstract art and we were trying to make social comment within that, and no one was getting the social comment; they thought, 'Oh, it's a shock-rock band.' We've never considered ourselves a shock-rock band, and to be honest, even to this day, I resent that; I don't like being considered that. But I understand that the eyes are the dominant sense, and so if you're going to try and get your message across, sometimes you have to simplify it to be able to do that."

On not playing "Animal (Fuck Like A Beast)" live anymore:

Blackie: "We haven't done that song for several years. And it's totally because of my religious faith, and it's something that I don't want to do anymore, and I will never play that song again.

"What can I do to be a positive influence? So I'm looking at what I'm doing and I'm trying to create the best example that I can. I don't want 13-year-olds going around singing that song. If that's something they wanna do later in their life, that's their business. But, like I said, it's a question of faith and the religious conviction that I have."

On whether it means that he's not so proud of all the things he's done in his past:

Blackie: "Well, that would be one of them, but... You have to understand that I believe that I've been put here on this Earth to do a very specific thing. This album, 'Babylon', that we're doing now really talks about what's going on with the Book Of Revelation and the bible.

"Someone asked me the other day. They said, 'Are you a rock and roll preacher now?' I said, 'No. But I am a messenger.' And that's what my job is. So everything I did up to this point has led me to where I am now."

"Babylon", the new album from W.A.S.P., entered the U.K. "Rock Albums" chart at position No. 15.

"Babylon" was released on October 12 through Global Music (via Demolition Records). The CD is themed around biblical visions of "The Four Horseman of the Apocalypse," and is described in a press release as "a metal masterpiece that will make fans both old and new craving for more."

The track listing for the album is as follows:

01. Crazy
02. Live To Die Another Day
03. Babylon's Burning
04. Burn
05. Into The Fire
06. Thunder Red
07. Seas Of Fire
08. Godless Run
09. Promised Land

Audio samples of all the tracks that appear on "Babylon" are available at Amazon.co.uk.

"Crazy" was made available for download via various digital service providers from September 28.

Lawless commented on the track: "Although like it may sound like a man talking to a woman, 'Crazy' is about a performer talking to an audience; the dangers of idol worship and elevating musicians and politicians to a level that's dangerous!"

No need to worry about fanatical fans idol-worshipping you, Blackie. Your five minutes were up a LONG time ago.

lundtheconqueror: You'd be shocked at how many shows he's flaked on, just because the stage couldn't take the weight (about a metric ton) of his grotesque mic stand thingy. A 'traditional' mic stand would do just fine and wouldn't be a deal-breaker for anybody else, but not so for Blackie "I USED to be somebody" Lawless.

These people are none the better for their claim of accepting "Christ". In fact, they are almost worse because they are now full-blown hypocrites!

Jesus would be horrified that these converts, and christians in general, are the legacy of his life's work. It makes me sad that the mere fact that they have adopted your worldview makes them champions in your eyes.

Look a little closer at them, dude. You'll ought to be disgusted at what you see.

Guess he won't play I'm Alive anymore then either. Why do over the hill rock stars feel the need to start believing in an imaginary friend?

Ref the mic stand thing, the story according to Metal Sludge, who love to bash Blackie, is that he won't play without his mic stand because 50% of his 'live' show is on tape and his mic stand has all the triggers for the vocals etc. and so he can't actually pull off his show without it.

Regardless of all the above, WASP were great in the 80's.

I really don't care much what Blackie believes as long as he keeps making good music. I don't care much that Halford is gay, etc., etc. What I care about is the music. Blackie does not want to preform some old song from the past anymore? Who cares. He has written plenty of other songs that are better. As an ex-Christian myself (though I'm not an atheist, nor agnostic), I don't prefer to see anyone fall prey to delusions, especially someone who was so much an image that seemingly stood against such things. But the fact is, the world is a complex place. Blackie was raised in a Christian family. For one reason or another, some people return to what they know when they get older. NOT EVERYONE HAS THE TIME or the strength to do the necessary study to escape all the delusions that life has to offer. It took me a long time to get out of the religious mess I put myself into.

Personally though, I'm glad to see that Blackie wants to move on to more serious subject matter than 13 year old lust and fucking like a beast, blah blah, same old same old. I thought Babylon was a decent album, though I think I prefer the previous album "Dominator" more at this point. As long as he keeps his beliefs pretty much off the albums, I'm going to continue looking forward to what he does next. AT LESAT HE DOESN'T SPEW ENDLESS MOANING ABOUT THE BAND THAT FUCKED HIM OVER WHEN HE WAS FIRST STARTING OUT like a certain someone does. But you know what? Don't care about that either as long as Megadeth keeps giving me great albums. Baby, I just don't care.

Who doesn't complain about governments? Show me a government that doesn't have something worth complaining about. Granted, he gets more attention because he is in the public eye, but I think most people bitch about governments (people on blabb certainly are no strangers to bitching about stuff). I don't really care too much what he says as long as he gives me good music. If bitching about the government helps fuel some fire in him and helps him give me a decent album, great. I just think it interesting here at Blabb how people seem to think musicians are not normal people. That they are not subjected to the same stupid mistakes that everyone else makes. How they are somehow above it or something. Musicians take a shit just like everyone else. What do I care? As long as they entertain me with cool music, I'm happy at the end of the day. If being perfect or keeping ones mouth shut or whatever was necessary to be make good music, the world would NEVER get any.

Jesus was based on an old Egyptian God named Horus who was the sun. He also healed the sick, helped the blind to see, had 12 brothers and was born of a virgin. He also died for three days and was resurrected..Since Horus there have been over two-hundred gods and dieties with all the same attributes. Jesus only happened to be the latest of these. You people really need to get edjucated on religion.. All of the old religions were based on the zodiac. So was the bible.. Stop following a lie..
And Blackie, I loved you in the eighties. I was 13 and those first four albums were the shit. I loved them. I can't believe that you have become what you most hated. A fucking hypocrite.. You suck and since you won't play "Animal" anymore, then I won't buy your shit anymore. 2nd: Blackie is now a religious man, which means he should shut the fuck up and "give to Ceasar what is Ceasar's, and give to God what is God's". Stop whining about Obama this and Obama that. His Bible clearly states that "the political system of things belongs to the Devil".

3rd: No point cutting out "Fuck like a beast" from your set if you're not going to go the whole mile... like changing his name for a start, which essentially represents a man who does things his way, not the authorities or "Christ's way".

>>> It's easy to denounce something that had a profound professional, auditory and visual artistic value 25 years later saying "We've never considered ourselves a shock-rock band" while that's exactly what they were. If there was this "social message" then what was it? Singing songs like Animal FUCK LIKE A BEAST, On Your Knees, L.O.V.E. Machine etc. with a show of chains, skulls, fire and blood heralded the liberty of executing personal desires to the fullest extent, without guilt. Art, even abstract art, is not just art that's there to be seen or heard, it's made to awaken senses within. Abstract art...Blackie is basically still feeling guilty for what he did 25 years ago and for many years after that and now he's trying his best to look totally different than what he was. That's fine with me, everyone changes throughout the years - more or less - but this kind of serious self-stigmatization afterwards is very strange to me. If Blackie doesn't like to do the guts-and-gore anymore, then he could just say "That was me before, now I want to be more concise and to-the-point" or something like that.

On not playing "Animal (Fuck Like A Beast)" live anymore:

Blackie: "We haven't done that song for several years. And it's totally because of my religious faith, and it's something that I don't want to do anymore, and I will never play that song again.

>>> That's too bad, what a great song, a true crowd-pleaser and surge of sexual adrenaline. I respect Blackie's faith and conviction, I'm a religious man myself but I definitely hold that particular song as something exciting and life-affirming. I remember WASP performed the song as late as in 2006 here in Finland. At least on both 2004 shows they did it!

I wonder why it's so cool to bash someone who finds the true Lord. And btw, EVERYONE who lives or ever has lived is at some point a hypocrite...because we're ALL sinners!

You know, I'm great friends with many people who hate God (some of the most extreme Satanic people), yet I am a Christian. At the very least, you can say you don't agree with Blackie, but if you really like his music, why bash him so badly? Is it really him you hate, or is it that mention of the Lord convicts the soul? And why is it that people are so passionate against Jesus, when in general they're just apathetic towards other "gods?" It's definitely something to think about.

Anyway, back to metal discussion.......

But I respect anyone bold enough to go out and say hey listen, I'm a christian or I want to set a good example or whatever. Besides, its not 1986 and everyone changes over time, everyone.

So the real hypocrites are in this forum. Get over it. Its not your life, its Blackie's, Daves, Heads, or what have you. 10 foot tall and bulletproof when behind a laptop, right? I guess there are a bunch of tough guys in this place.

They will never play 'Animal (F**k like a beast)' again? Fair enough. I will never pay to see another W.A.S.P. concert again. Thei debut material was their best and now they stop playing it. There is no reason for me to see them anymore.

I wondered why, but beacause he´s become religious??? I didn´t know that. Damn thats sad!!!! I´m very very disappointed..
But beside from that, is was a great show, and he looks and sounds good. And the 2 new songs are really really good too, check them out!

I see what you mean but I think WASP was probably one of the best if not the best bands from the 80's. It's just disappointing to see it morph into the opposite. I mean I am a hardcore Stryper fan as well but I don't want them to start having satanic lyrics you know what I am sayin?

Blackie, go spew you sanctimonious bullshit elsewhere, you're defecating all over your past for no reason other than guilt, the only thing religion is ever going to give you. Except for a complete and utter mindfuck, that is. So now you found God, and suddenly you're a messenger with a need to distance yourself from your sordid past? I can't believe you don't see how much of a hypocrite you have become. Or maybe (my guess) you just wager most people are stupid enought to swallow your inane drivel unquestioned? Take a hike, you washed-out bigot, I used to admire you for your outspokenness. No longer. Read above statements from BM-readers, and take them to heart. Some of them REALLY ought to make you think twice. Always heard you were a total douchebag, guess you have become so much more than that. Now kiss your career goodbye!

And to 'markb3767', who regurgitates upon us this little paragraph of spoon-fed nonsense to give us a piece of his beloved 'truth':

QUOTE

The bible tells us there will be mockers of Christ in
the last days so...please keep it up. More proof that
the Bible is true. Bible quote "the fool says in his
heart there is no God".

END QUOTE

You speak of proof like it is a concept you are familiar with. Don't flatter yourself, you have NO clue! And, of course: don't you just LOVE to quote the good old collection of greatest lies ever told? Blackie is NOT Christ, Mark! Were you home-schooled by demented baboons? There is no hard physical evidence Christ as a person actually ever existed! I challenge you to prove otherwise, using reputable sources and employing the scientific method! Chances are, you don't even know what the FUCK (oops) I am talking about. Also, trusting the contents of a book just because it is a book, renders you a gullible fuck (oops, AGAIN?) not worthy of breathing the same air as the rest of us. Mocking the ridiculous idea of Christ/God/The Holy Spirit/whatever (however fun and invigorating it sure is) does NOT prove the Bible is true, can you get that into your tiny little brain? Does it work AT ALL? The REAL fool is the person who claims that there is an invisible omnipresent, omnipotent, omniscient being that created everything (including itself), but who demands no evidence for it, and accepts this on faith alone. Add to this the unashamed tenacity to expect and demand others to do the same, and to have them accept his or her delusions to be real.

I hope you both expire in the shortest time possible from this reality for the crime of poisoning the minds of the more easily led out there. The world does NOT need your vile kind, we have enough problems as it is.

Here ya go bro. Historical evidence? Check out Roman Tacitus,
Flavius Josephus,Julius Africanus,Lucian of Samosata to start
with. They are all historians who mention Jesus. By the way
where is the PROOF that Jesus didn't exist? The best I can figure
we both have a 50% chance of being right. I'll put my money
on the facts for Christ. I may not be a scholar like yourself but I
do think the evidence (prophecies that have come to pass)
speak for itself.

As for hoping I and Blackie expire shortly-I have no fear of death. I hope you live a very long life and discover that God
truly loves you and he takes away the hate you have for
those who only desire for you to know HIM.

People change; apparently this is how Blackie wants to live his life and run his career. Who are we to judge? If it works for him, great. If you don't like it, don't go to the shows, don't buy the CD. I think it takes a big sack to stand by your convictions/beliefs, and to admit that maybe things in your past were mistakes or things you're not so proud of anymore.

BTW, who cares about Animal? yes, I loved it when I was 15 too, but I'd rather hear anything off The Headless Children.

His been through alot...the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and now! so think about where he is coming from. I doubt you all will be hardcore satanists, occultists, yuppies, rebels, feeding off your parents the rest of yours lifes or am I wrong?

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Nowadays everything is negative..the media, people in general toward each other (hell i'm to blame there) Blackie is just trying to get something positive out there amongst all this shit were in now!

More power to him to express what he thinks since he is in that position to do so..

You know, people are entitled to change as they grow and get older....we all at one time or another felt one way about something or another and as we get older and more wise or more mature, we do see things differently. That doesn't make one a hypocrite at all. Good for Blackie for turning his life over to Christ, for realizing that God has a purpose for his life. It's my prayer that those of you who vehemently criticize Blackie will too, find how much God loves you and wants a relationship with you. Blackie sees this. BTW, Christians can rock just as hard as non-Christians....the metal/Christian metal scene is full of rockers who rock for the Lord!

The man who courageously stood up against the PMRC labeled "Public Enemy #1" has finally laid down his artistic expression and has instead adopted the pseudo-values of those who have wished him ill-will. Un-Fucking-Believable.

The man who once could be counted on to both speak his mind honestly and to listen with an open mind, has lowered himself to the status of petty liar by saying things like 'We've never considered ourselves a shock-rock band, and to be honest, even to this day, I resent that.' Give me a break. Drinking blood from a skull while performing rock music on stage could have had no other conceptual motive than to be considered by fans and critics alike an 'over-the-top shock-rock' band, which succeeded in helping spawn a whole generation of theatrical music performances.

Final Score: Tipper Gore - 1; Blackie Lawless - 0

By the way. I'm not into Christianity whatsoever, but I do share Blackie's love for the book of Revelations. I read that book on acid one time because I was dared to do it by an experienced guy who had done it before. It was a truly mind-blowing experience. Whoever wrote the Bible knew how to end that motherfucker with a bang. Though I honestly don't hold any personal stock in the book of Revelations aside from a truly far-out experience, I have to give maximum kudos to the person who wrote it for his uncanny ability to freak people out.
