DAVE MUSTAINE: 'I Have No Desire To Answer Any Questions, At All, About METALLICA' - Oct. 31, 2009
MetalInsider.net recently conducted an interview with MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

MetalInsider.net: So I'm going to start with the elephant in the room that I'm sure you're getting asked at every single interview lately. The "Big Four" tour with MEGADETH, SLAYER, METALLICA and ANTHRAX — any truth to that rumor?

Mustaine: You know, there's no way to answer any questions about METALLICA for me. If I answer them politely, I get reamed. If I answer them funny, I get reamed. If I say something like when I said I believed my record was better than theirs, and even in that comment I said that they've got plenty of records that are better than anything that I've done, except this one… And for once it's nice to be on the opposite side. That was taken apart. "I think my record's better than theirs." Well, you didnt finish the sentence, you twat. I have no desire to answer any questions, at all, about METALLICA. If something comes up, you'll know, but as far as I'm concerned, I can't say anything about those guys, and I won't.

MetalInsider.net: Fair enough, I'm definitely not trying to draw you into controversy.

Mustaine: It's not you my friend, it's the readers and the listeners. And then it's the tabloid-rag-sensationalism writers that don't really deserve a place in the metal community because one of the things that was really great about the metal community is we weren't these back-biting bottom-feeders that we've become right now. In the beginning, it was all about a sense of community. The writers and the bands were friends of one another. They had the right and they had the respect of the bands even to give their opinion about the music. While you might not have gotten a great review, it wasn't one of these reviews where you walk away feeling like youre subhuman, and "God, what a dumbass I am to have written such a stupid record." When you walk away feeling like that and you're the artist and they're not, it just makes you feel kind of dirty. There's some magazines that I can't even read anymore. Magazines in the beginning that were the only credible source of heavy metal, and now they don't even cover heavy metal, now it's like alternative music and stuff. How can you cover alternative music if you were built on metal?

MetalInsider.net: I told a co-worker that I was interviewing you, and he said, "Does he have any idea how 'Holy Wars…The Punishment Due' holds up today stronger than it even has?" Do you think about that, or is it just another song from your body of work that happens to line up with current events?

Mustaine: I think it would be absolutely disrespectful to say that "Holy Wars" was just another song. It would be disrespectful to myself to even say that. It's an anthem. It's a song that speaks the truth of every man that is walking the face of the earth right now. We don't know why we kill one another, but we do it. We go and we blindly follow our leaders and we don't even know what were doing. I just did an interview with [syndicated radio host] Alex Jones the other day and it is so frightening what is going on in politics right now with Obama becoming the president of the UN and the president to the U.S. He is the single most powerful man in the world right now. You can hear the bells of the new world order ringing itself into power.

MetalInsider.net: What do you think of the current regime?

Mustaine: He's my president. I'm a patriot. All I'm talking about is events and stuff like this. As far as taking any credibility shots at our president, I would never do that. I think that looking back when they're out of office, you can look at an administration's work and you can certainly have your opinion, but for me, I really try to not be disrespectful to our incumbent president. It's real easy to make fun of Bush, because he was just such a clod and he couldn't help it for himself. I wouldn't have the song "Endgame" if it werent for him. And thank god for Lou Dobbs, because if it wasn't for him, he would have never brought to the light this whole thing with NAFTA and with New World Order. George H. W. Bush said from the podium in the House of Representatives (that) he welcomed in the New World Order. You don't say stuff like that. "New world" and "order" in a sentence being uttered by a president with no words or pauses in between, that's scary. The other thing, too, is that when you look at one currency, well, we have the euro that's already established in Europe and they're trying to develop the amero right now, and once that's done, you've got world currencies narrowed down now to two huge territories that use a single currency for each one. That stuff is frightening. Now do I believe that Jesus was an alien? Do I believe in Hanger 18? Do I believe that Obama shook hands with a Martian? No, but do I believe that there's higher life forms than us? It's funny when you think about dudes that sit around and eat LSD and they just trip out on the world. When you really think about what that is, your mind is just being opened up to the splendor of the universe and things are so magnificently made. When you get to a point in your life where you get grateful, you really start to appreciate stuff. Sometimes you wonder how come people, when they get older, get kind of mellow in their old age. Well, I dont know that it's mellow, they kind of stop being a prick because they get grateful and some point. Some people learn really early on to be grateful. I've been grateful my entire career. In my personal life, there's been times where I've been an ingrate, but that's part of learning and growing and I made a huge change in my life back in 2002. And, you know, it's a daily walk every day.

MetalInsider.net: SLAYER obviously isnt too keen on Christianity or religion in general, do you have any qualms about playing with a band like that?

Mustaine: I don't really know where you're getting that from, because we hear conflicting stories. Tom [Araya; SLAYER bassist/vocalist] is supposed to be a Christian or a Catholic, I believe, and I believe Dave Lombardo [SLAYER drummer is] a Christian too, but it's none of my business. I know Kerry's [King, SLAYER guitarist] a good guy deep down inside. People don't really understand him. I remember him back from when he was really young and we were friends back then. Does me praying for Kerry make his butt itch at night? But if he knew what I was praying for, he'd probably smile, because I'm personally praying that we'll be friends again. Praying that we'll have a great tour and that it will be fun for them to be out with us because three of the guys from MEGADETH weren't even in the band when this happened. It's not their fight. What I said was 19 years ago and it was regrettable, but it certainly wasnt unprovoked. We were all just high octane at that time, Mike Muir [SUICIDAL TENDENCIES vocalist] was out on that tour too, and Muir wanted to fight me, if you remember. I had to go up to him and say, "Look, dude, if we're going to fight, let's fight after the tour like gentleman. Fortunately for me, he respected that because he was a big guy and he probably would have stamped me pretty good. I doubt that I would have lost. I don't know that anybody doesn't lose. When you get in a fight, there's never a winner. And the thing is I totally respect Mike, always have, but we had this difference; it was so bad. The problem was I said something and it was taken out of context again by a journalist.

Have to agre with him. I am pretty sure that he is fed up and sick and tired about getting asked about Metallica and such. He was in the band over 25+ years ago and we all know what happened next. That was then, and this is now. Those People need to Stop living in the past and move on and forward to bigger and better things.

I imagine it has been pretty hard on him over the years having been in a legendary band and being kicked out right before they exploded onto the scene.
He talks about Metallica like an obsessed ex-girlfriend who can't live without their soul mate.
If he really doesn't want to talk about them then I would suggest he stop bringing them up in interviews and the like.

1. Something about some band called Metallica (funny they still call themselves that, shouldn't it be radiofriendlyrockica).

2. Dave is obsessed with conspiracy theories (both political and ones about himself with that above mentioned band).

3. Dave still has a soft spot in his heart for LSD.

4. You have to like this guy, silliness and all.

it's simple Dave whenever someone brings up metallica you stop talking and say next question and if they persist you say something like I am here to talk about my band and that's it.if they keep asking you either sit there and say nothing or say thanks for your time but I gotta go. end of interview with no quotes taken out of context because there were not any.if they are taping it and your are saying that or nothing then you have no problem.but I think you love the attention it brings you and won't be able t do it.it's to bad because you do make good music but because you can't let go that's all people think of when they here the name megadeth.

even the metal fans are divided...i wish things were tight like in the 80's... u guys have to respect this guy for all the good things he've done to thrash metal and metal in general.. he was just explaining why he doesn't want to talk about metallica and that was in response to the journalist asking about the big four tour... how is that a bad thing? what's with the negative comments above??

the guys who are just trying to appear tough bashing mustaine on internet sites should really get a fucking life... if u don't like mustaine DON'T FUCKING READ ARTICLES ABOUT HIM! ur not forced to read about it are u?? there are millions of fans who love him as a guitarist , vocalist, frontman and a soild figure among metal artists...

i bet none of u guys have balls to tell all the shit ur talking about him to his face.. seriously u guys should be ashamed to call ur selves metal heads!

people like me who are from war torn countries would sell a kidney to see a legendary metal band!! and most of u guys from america continue to take shots at artists who are from ur own country.. i don't get that . i mean norwegians are so damn proud of their black metal scene.. and all big 4 in thrash are from america and still being constantly criticized..

u guys should watch the documentary " Global Metal " and see how a chance to see Megadeth mean to metalheads in my part of the world...

i really hope dave would read this... megadeth is a killer thrash band!

You see, in the world of right wing conspiracy nuts, the UN has already taken control of the United States, and the President, who runs both, is conspiring to take all us god fearing Americans and put us in FEMA run death camps. Democratic presidents are always going to roll over for the UN-rule New World Order-the militants said the same thing about Clinton, after all. The fact that none of this has any basis in fact never stops people from talking about it, or Dave Mustaine from writing songs about it and saying Obama is President of the UN. And the hilarious thing is, he doesn't even know his conspiracy theories-the shit he's talking about in "Endgame" isn't because of Bush, it's right wing militant talking points.

Just once I'd like the fucker to get interviewed by someone who knows politics and has the balls to say "Uh, Dave? The UN doesn't work that way."

I am just thrilled Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer have put out killer cd's in the last year. And to me that is the only thing that counts. It is all about the Metal and the nonsense behind the scenes means nothing. Can't wait to see Megadeth at Pops in Sauget, IL Dec 6th.

However, Dave Mustaine in particular is insane. He's talking about how.. he doesn't want to talk about metallica.. ahahah.. this guy is truly nuts.

anyways, the overarching thing people seem to be forgetting is. This dude has said this like 20 billion times. But you should know by now, that in two weeks it will just be another interview where he's taking a jab at metallica.

Cliff burton once said he couldn't listen to megadeth because all the shit Mustaine talked made him biased towards daves music. And at this point I gotta agree. Which pisses me off because I used to love some of the megadeth stuff.

Has nothing to do with actual beliefs of four individual dudes because 1.) four individual dudes are not writing the lyrics; 2.) the lyrics are art, no different than a novel or movie. Ace Frehley saying he doesn't want to talk about KISS, or Dave Mustaine saying he doesn't want to talk about Metallica. It's a part of both of their pasts that neither is going to ever get fully away from, so they might as well just answer the questions asked and quit making public statements about how they don't want to talk about the band that they're making the statement about.

I for one am glad Mustaine and Metallica split ways, it gave us two of the greatest bands of all time, instead of him staying in the band and the possibility of them never having gone anywhere. He should be happy to answer any questions about his time in Metallica or his thoughts on Metallica, just as he should the questions about Megadeth. Metallica and Megadeth will forever be joined at the hip and there isn't anything Mustaine, nor Hetfield can do about it.

Just like he had no desire to continue touring with devil bands.

The question was about the rumoured Big 4 tour and Dave in his reply singled out Metallica only, he didn't have too, he could of spoke about Anthrax or Slayer or just said it's all just talk but no, he once again bought Metallica up himself.

Mustaine: "I have no desire to answer any questions at all about Metallica...And while we're on the subject, let me tell you a thing or two about Metallica..."

"MetalInsider.net: SLAYER obviously isnt too keen on Christianity or religion in general, do you have any qualms about playing with a band like that?"

-------------------------------------------------

How can this guy work for a metal webzine?
Tom Araya stated that he was christian many years ago and that SLAYER was a job for him, so it wasn't hard to sing those lyrics. While I think those declarations took away a lot of credibility from SLAYER, how couldn't the journalist know?

Remember that this is the people we get most of the info from.

It's not a community anymore because Metallica sold out and left everyone else to fend for themselves. During the 90s they were as bad as the grunge and mall core bands, never touring with other metal bands, never supporting the scene (turning their backs on it in fact) raking in millions for shitty albums and quickly becoming the joke band. It's funny how much Metallica tries to get people to think for themselves and yet their fans are the most closed-minded drones that you'll ever meet (just behind scientologists). They'll praise the most worthless Met albums but criticize ANY and EVERY other metal band for not being Metallica (without hearing a note of other band's music.

Metallica divided the scene, and now it's metal fans verses the mainstream (and Metallica is no longer metal, no matter what kind of music that they play).

At least now, he's letting sleeping dogs lie. After 19 years it's time to let bygones be bygones and put on an amazing tour with the big four that have given us some of the most amazing music of all time.

Droogies!

This is not really necessary anymore. It was said a long time ago, I am a different person now, and he may have gotten a lot better by now.

The bottom line is that even if I felt that way, I would have to be really pissed to say something like that (and I was), but since I am feeling such peace and freedom right now, I really don't feel like saying anything to hurt anyone, anymore.

I got a guitar to beat the hell out of and that is good enough for now. :-)

To anyone that this may have hurt or offended, watch it again, hahaha! But seriously, if I have hurt or offended anyone, I apologize. I am not apologizing for 'what' I have said, I am apologizing for 'why' I said it. I felt hurt and I felt offended, and I just wanted Kirk to feel as bad as I did, but thankfully, he was able to sidestep the foray. I know I hurt him, but I have zero reason to keep doing this, and even less desire to hurt him with my words or actions ever again.

Please don't promote the 'Naughty Dave' in this light. He is still around here and still a very big part of me, but I try to keep him bottled up until the show tape starts. Letting 'Naughty Dave' talk without a guitar or a band is very dangerous. It only keeps the feud going, and with these type of decisions to post things like this, THINGS THAT HAVE NO REAL REASON TO BE HERE AT THE SITE, other than to start some controversial actions, you just may have denied us all a chance at seeing the Big Four in action.
