LACUNA COIL Frontwoman: 'I've Always Hated Descriptions Of Music' - Nov. 1, 2009
Steve Wildsmith of The Daily Times recently conducted an interview with LACUNA COIL frontwoman Cristina Scabbia. A a couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

On her image in magazine covers and publicity photos and on the stage:

"Women are beautiful just in general, and no matter what, other guys and humans will always be looking at the sexy part and the feminine part of me. As long as I use that image in a sexy way and not a vulgar way, I'm fine with it. People who know me know that I'm completely different than how you see me in pictures. ...

"They have no idea how I am in real life — I don't wear makeup, and I don't dress the way I do on stage. I smile about that, and I'm pleased and flattered, but I have my own private life."

On the band's new album, "Shallow Life", which moved more toward straight-ahead rock:

"We didn't want to repeat ourselves over and over. It's not like we don't like what we did in the past, but we did it already. For the new album, we didn't want to do 'Karmacode Part 2', so we went with a different producer who would bring something new to the table.

"I think this album is a good rock album. There are still some melancholy parts — call them 'goth parts,' if you want to — but at the same time, I think we added a lot more to the table. The songs are tight, and the lyrics are more direct than ever. There's a lot more power coming out of the album, in my opinion."

"I've always hated descriptions of music — people say, 'I like this band because they're really metal,' or, 'I like this band because they're really rock.' To me, I don't care. If I listen to the music and it gives me chills, then I like it. I can like classical music to relax, and I can like rock music to get some energy. Why get stuck on just one kind of music?

"Honestly — on my iPod, you will find everything from Beethoven to LAMB OF GOD. I have no problem listening to different styles, because at the same time, I can never listen to the same style over and over and over. Music is so different nowadays and can be confusing, but if you take that in terms of, 'I like this band and the music they make,' then it's fine.

"Who cares about names? If I like the band, that's it. That's all that matters."

Every poster on this site needs to read this and really think about their metal elitism mentality.

The new album is ok, there are going the way of Evanescene with their new sound. They need to be metal again.

I've never been much into their music. But it is impressive to hear how open minded she is about other forms of music.

When it comes to close minded tastes, it's generally younger people anyway. As they get older they will get into different things. Sadly the more "hardcore" people are generally the ones who end up being embarrassed of what they listened to back in the day.

It's cool that they want to evolve but Comalies was their best CD and they've gone down-hill in the "gives me chills" factor.

Not too big a fan of their last couple releases, but still, I have an immense amount of respect for this band. All around talented, cool people, just playing heavy music and having a great time doing it.

i dislike elitism of any kind, especailly metalhead elitist.

the kind that go to a concert, and when the main act appears and its not their style walks away and says
"i`ll let you kiddies to the front to enjoy your show now"

i think most metalheads like different styles of music anyway not just one.

i like a bit of jazz, house, classical all depends on your taste.

I liked watching them live with Disturbed earlier this year. They were really good. My gf bought me the new CD and there are some good tracks, but I don't spin it too much. The song "I Like It" stood out as sucky though, I remember that.

You're more than just a body, kid and so's everyone else. I dislike labels and assumptions as well especially when you KNOW you're capable of more than just "one style"and "one thing". But most people walk around with blinders on, see what what they want to see and disregard the rest, to borrow from an old Simon and Garfunkle tune.

I'm glad I'm the change I want to see despite all the blockheaded blindness.

Thank You.

the new album is great. I thought they were done after the boredom called Karmacode but this one really pulled it all back together.

And without "descriptors" or labels, how would you explain musical stylings? Labels matter. you can't just call everything "rock". Are you describing Tom Petty or Cannibal Corpse? I'm sorry but simply saying "rock" just doesn't cut it.

These are serpent words!

She is trying to justify selling out... The bands new music has no purely musical merit but is an attempt to be more 'unit friendly'.

Commercialism is only justified when the music you make in good faith is wanted by many.

Keep the Faith or fall on your swords.

I am surprised that I didn't find the usual "No one cares about this band" or whatever someone else happens to say to be a dick.
It's pretty nice.

While I don't like the new direction of their latest album, I can't blame any artist who wants to experiment but I think they are ways to be experimental while keeping your "sound". Comalies was a good album and a good example.

now that you mention it, how come it's difficult to ever seen any sexy "backside" shots of her? I've seen glimpses and I think a picture or two. She dresses with a mixture of classy sometimes and straight up hot and sexy sometimes, a thong or some hot picture of her ass would rule.
