KING'S X Is Contemplating Performing 'Gretchen Goes To Nebraska' Album In Its Entirety
- Nov. 3, 2009
|
|
KING'S X frontman Doug Pinnick was recently interviewed by Brian Heaton of The Breakdown Room. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below. On the possibility of the band performing the 1989 album "Gretchen Goes to Nebraska" in its entirety: "We've been throwing around the idea of doing all of 'Gretchen' in key cities with a lot of special effects. A lot of the songs we don't play live much, so it's going to take some work." On the band's next studio album: "We've been trying to write a couple of hit songs so we can sell some records. Next time we want to do a real record again — 'Gretchen', 'Dogman', something people can sink their teeth into. We've been writing songs and want to get back to ground zero and touch someone emotionally. . . We want to do it in Los Angeles somewhere, get in a room and hash it out, take our time and have some fun." On KING'S X's recent dates with progressive rockers PORCUPINE TREE: "The tour was great and so were the guys in PORCUPINE TREE. There were a ton of sold-out shows and we really won the crowd and had them all singing. They gave us a lot of respect and it was very successful." On whether he gets tired of performing some of the KING'S X classics in a live situation: "Truthfully, I'm pretty sick of 'Dogman', 'Black Flag' and 'We Were Born to Be Loved', but I understand it's a part of it. When I'm a fan of a band, I don't want to hear stuff I don't know. I want to hear my favorite songs and I get mad if I don't." On whether the fact that KING'S X hasn't had that big break bothers him: "We live week-to-week and it's only frustrating on the days where I can't pay my bills and something as simple like buying tires screws up the whole month. I don't feel like a loser or want to give up, but sometimes you feel that way. If KING'S X isn't as successful, it's not the people's fault. Life is what you make it. I'm a musician but I'm not a rich rock star. I just do what I like to do." Read the entire interview from The Breakdown Room.

Playing Gretchen is a great idea.
The problem with recent KX albums was that the band members saved some of their best material for their solo albums, especially Ty Tabor.

Gretchen Goes to Nebraska is a masterpiece. I would go see that.
The money thing is sad. I hope their biggest commercial success is right around the corner.

I would LOVE to see the band play Gretchen front to back.
Personally, my favorite King's X record is still the epic debut 'Out of the Silent Planet' ... but I love 'em all.

years ago people told me that King`s X is great as AC/DC or Guns`N`Roses and I went and got Dogman. But I didn`t get it. It sounded good but average to me then.. But then I had the chance to see them at the Horseshoe in Toronto. From the first note they blew me away (it was the manic moonlight tour, to me one of the most underrated records ever!!!!) They sounded like 7 people playing. Until now the best concert I ever saw. They don`t need to play the old stuff. I saw them again this year in Aschaffenburg and people were yelling for Rocketship, a song from XV even. Unfortunately they had to stop after the first encore.. Jerry`s Solo is beautyful!

I`ve been a fan since '88 and I agree with the first post. A criminally overlooked band. True musicians through and through. Amazing vocal harmonies and song structures without sounding over-indulgent. Every release of theirs is a journey. Very influential band. A mystery as to how they haven`t been more successful. Sounds strange to hear Doug say they live week to week. But they`ve kept at it after all these years, thank God!

I've always wondered why in the hell Dopey dave mustaine never got Kings X on gigantour. One of the best bands around, and they could use the press. Granted KX isn't thrash, but neither are the radio fodder bands he's got lined up this time around.

Porcupine Tree were recently in my home town of Oslo, Norway. I didn't go but I believe they had Katatonia open for them. If I somehow should have missed King's X because they opened for somebody else I would have gone mad. I haven't seen King's X in 8 years! They should come to Europe more often, I'm sure people here would like to see them.

I saw King's X twice this year in NYC...amazing shows. I also own most of their albums. It is a huge shame they haven't had the success they deserve. The problem is with the internet and downloading it's gets tougher for a great band like KX. Somebody huge needs to take these guys out on tour and quick.

RebelRobot, they just toured here in the US with PT, that's why you didn't hear about them playing together in your neck of the woods.
King's X is great and underrated, as already stated and has been said for ages, but I think maybe this band has been more of a musicians band than a band for the masses. They do have the ability to appeal to many, but somehow have not managed to catch on enough. They have been on stages with some pretty huge bands, and been on some big tours, like opening for AC/DC in Europe somewhere around the time when the self titled release came out. So many big name musicians have said they love this band, but not that many have bothered to take them out on tour, Pearl Jam is the one that comes to mind first. Now don't get me wrong, I've been a fan to some degree or another for many years also and I'd love to see them be huge, but at this stage it seems hard to see. Major kudos to them for keeping at it for this long and I'd hate to see them go away, but it sounds a bit tough, from what Dug says.

"When I'm a fan of a band, I don't want to hear stuff I don't know. I want to hear my favorite songs and I get mad if I don't."
When I saw you guys at Birch Hill during the "Ear Candy" tour, you refused to play any of the hits, specifically from the first two albums. You teased the fuck out of "Goldilox," playing the opening notes and then went up to the microphone and announced you weren't playing that. Instead you threw out shit like a cover of Grand Funk Railroad's "You're My Captain" at us. That was the last time I ever spent money on this group. The first two albums are pure magic and I'll enjoy for a lifetime, but they pissed off the entire crowd that night and probably lost a ton of fans.

You're an idiot, I WAS AT THAT SHOW...the crowd was not pissed.....
The crowd ate the band up.
I am a forever fan of this band. The very first time I heard them driving, I was drving my '78 Camaro across Rutgers campus, listening to WSOU, and out of nowhere I hear this song called, "Goldilox", I couldn't believe my ears.
I have seen them at least 15 times live since, amd many tours in the last 8 years I have gone to see them twice a year. I recently saw them at the stone pony in July, pure magic!!!
