SLAYER's KERRY KING Has No Interest In 'Jesus Metal' - Nov. 3, 2009
Nymag.com's Vulture blog recently conducted an interview with SLAYER's Tom Araya and Kerry King. An excerpt from the chat follows below.

Nymag.com: There are rumors that "World Painted Blood" is one of the last SLAYER albums.

King: That's nothing that any of us have talked about collectively. These things come out when we do press. I'm like, "Don't worry about it! We'll be done when we're done." When we have our farewell tour it's not gonna be like KISS, it's gonna be the last fuckin' one.

Araya: The fact is, this is our tenth album with Rick Rubin [producer and American Recordings head honcho] — our last album with him. What we do after this, I don't know, because we'd have to decide new details and do a new contract. How people do records and how people create has changed so drastically. After this, we gotta sit down and talk.

Nymag.com: SLAYER is approaching its 30th year. If you could go back in time and give yourselves some advice, what would it be?

King: Pay more attention to the mix in [1994 album] "Divine Intervention".

Araya: Don't forget the video camera! It would have been great to have documented this crazy ride.

Nymag.com: What's popular in metal right now that you wish would die?

King: There seems to be a plentiful amount of metal bands that are like, religious, so to speak. Personally, for me, it's an odd thing … bands that are doing metal, but they're singing, like, Jesus metal. And I don't mean STRYPER. When I hear them I'm like, "Oh they're one of them Jesus bands." It's enough of a distaste to me that I don't even want to hear it.

Araya: I don't watch anything that tells me what's going on today in the world as far as music goes. I don't care. I'm in SLAYER. I like SLAYER. And that's about it. SLAYER.

Stryper is the only 'christain rock' band I can take. Metal is starting to become too religious. It's already taken over Punk, now it's starting to seek it's teeth into the metal scene. The music doesn't suck, it's just that this type of music shouldn't be associated with these types of acts. Church is allowed to have it's own music, and metalheads are allowed to have their own.

Mainstream religion has absolutely no place in metal. Its weird to see this happening in metal when religious belief seems to be on the decline in general in America and Europe. Maybe that has something to do with it

That's probably one of the most retarded things I have ever heard coming from a guy who is in a band that entirely focuses on religion. If you believe in God, Jesus, Angels and all the rest of it, then you also believe in Satan, Demons, Hell etc. That's what religion is, it's a belief and following.

And ah, last time I checked, Kerry, Tom and the rest of Slayer have spent their entire careers singing about religion and Satan and all that and even put Jesus on the front of their albums, and crosses and all the rest of it.

I'm not saying Christian stuff is any good or any better, but if he has the nuts to say that no one should be singing about God, then maybe Slayer should also stop singing about Satan and get a new topic.

Kerry, stop worrying about religion, a LYRICAL theme and think about the music itself.

Screamo, crabcore, pretty much ANY subgenre ending in -core, they all suck. Bands like TDWP and Attack Attack are pretty much misguiding the new generation into listening to horrible watered down extreme music.

In response to these quotes:

"Mainstream religion has absolutely no place in metal."

&

"Metal is starting to become too religious. It's already taken over Punk, now it's starting to seek it's teeth into the metal scene. The music doesn't suck, it's just that this type of music shouldn't be associated with these types of acts."

Why the hell not??? You're forgetting FREE SPEECH. If you or Kerry King or Gahl or anyone else can sing about the devil/satan/etc. etc. etc., then anyone else has the exact same right to sing about Christ/Allah/Xenu, whatever/whoever. All of this fucking crap about "Well that kind of religious stuff doesn't belong in my metal..." is just that, fucking crap. If you don't like it- believe it or not, you posses the ability to turn your attention elsewhere. How about this too: maybe instead of trying to stamp out anything that even remotely is associated with a religion you don't like, how about just saying "fuck it" and leaving it alone? Or just getting along with it? Shit, I'm Christian and I put up with your satanic shit in metal. Why? Because I know that for whatever reason, you like it and in some way, it gives you a feeling of significance and fulfillment in your life - and given the fact that I'm one of your fellow humans, I support your happiness. So why shouldn't I, or Peter Steel, or Tom Araya or Brian Welch or Dave Mustaine or anyone else who is happy about their religion, be able to express it through music, just like you? There really isn't any reason why not. Nobody owns or governs metal. Life is too short to waste your energy hating something that you'll never truly see an end to- and that includes Christianity, some political stance, some form of art, etc. Just be cool. Why the fuck not?

How can anyone play Metal music using the darker sounding cords and scales and glorify jesus at the same time?
I can understand a song such as Metallica's Creeping Death, a wicked tune about the extreme level of violence in a tale from the christian bible. The same way Milton's Paradise Lost provides dark imagery and is the basis for much of Heavy Metal music.
Jesus rock is mainstream Metal with all the redeeming qualities of a white bread sandwhich.

It's about music and musical taste. If I'm a Christian and I want to play metal coz I love metal and I decide to sing about God, what's that got to do with the chords I use? I'm writing a metal song, should I use harps and bells instead of drums and guitars?

I don't like religion either, but As I Lay Dying is still worlds better than Slayer, aka the most overrated metal band EVER. I know I'm in the minority here, and I certainly appreciate their influence (many of the bands I love wouldn't exist without them), but I'm just not drooling over them like all of my metalhead friends do.

Now, a lot of Christian metal bands do in fact irk me (ie Demon Hunter because of their lyrics), but for King to imply that these bands are less worthy of respect from the metal community because of their beliefs is just plain closed-minded. Plus, he's definitely in the minority in thinking that, judging from the crowd's reception of AILD at the LoG concert I went to in April, the place went nuts when they went on, including me, a hardcore agnostic.

Metal is supposed to be defined by a close-knit, welcoming/accepting fan base, but King is apparently doing his best to change that.

If every christian was like you, I'd still probably believe in Jesus. I won't lie, christian metal can sound pretty ridiculous and cheesy at times, but so can satanic black metal played by guys in makeup who run around forest striking ridiculous poses. Metal should be the one way anyone can express themselves, regardless of creed or political stance. Saying that christian metal isn't metal shows the same level of narrow-mindedness that many metalheads bash religion for in the first place.

Anyway, the Christian metal bands suck because none of the new, young ones are singing....they all scream & growl like the rest of sucky modern metal. And their lyrics don't distinguish them much from secular metal.

....mediocre intro.....growled vocals & numetal beat.....growled chorus with screaming......breakdown......mediocre repetition

Can you praise jesus with dark sounding music? I thought the jesus thing was about glory and praising the lord. Maybe its really about burning all the non christians in a ball of fire. Isn't that supposed to be all fun and joy to the world? Sure music can be "fun" sounding, because of the scales and chords, add some gospel lyrics and call it Metal 'cause it's played with some distortion but you'll never see it on Jimmy Swaggert or Jack Van Impe or played at the vatican.
Slayer may not be the greatest band in the world but if they did gospel lyrics that would be truly ridiculous.

As for the article, I agree even though his comment also makes him look like a hypocrite. It's pretty lame to pussy up metal to spread the word or christ, but you shouldn't bash when you pretty much spread a certain word about satan. I just music is music, and it's just a dmn expression of yourself. If you want to sing about the lord and savior, go right the fuck on. You have the right and apparently have the fans. Music is music, there is just a certain taste people have. I wouldn't go off and deliberatly shove my finger in their chest and tell them what I think but when my opinion is asked, I would be glad to answer. Did anyone see Pete Steele's latest interview on here?It seems that certain segments of the metal community give Type O Negative a pass on at least Peter's christianity, because they like the music. But if it's shit music, then they'll rip on the "christian band".
"Dead Again" has plenty of religious references and it's a fucking awesome album, best one they've done I think. But does that make them a "Christian Band"? I don't really care either way... if they are then christian music fucking rules!

Here's the thing: There's a huge difference between a guy in a metal band who's a Christian (Araya) and a Christian metal band (Stryper). I have no problem whatsoever supporting a band I like if the members are religious, but as soon as there is pro-monotheism in their lyrics, I'm done. I'm fine with lyrics about Satan, paganism (but not stupid, trendy Wicca), or classical mythology, because, even though I know they're not true, those topics at least have interest to me and are "metal". Judeo-Christian-Muslim religions are harmful garbage, and I avoid their supporters in much the same way, and for the same reason (moral objection), that I avoid NAMBLA. Incidentally, if a black metal band TRULY wants to be "anti-human, anti-life", they should adopt a Christian or Muslim fundamentalist ideology. Quality metal bands can keep on singing about Satan, war, serial killers, Conan, and zombies. That last statement is not "ironic"; I genuinely like songs about those topics. Also, "World Painted Blood" is excellent.
