SLIPKNOT Frontman Is 'Blown Away' By New SLAYER Album
- Nov. 3, 2009
|
|
SLIPKNOT/ STONE SOUR frontman Corey Taylor was the guest co-host on this week's "Taco Tuesday", ShockHound's weekly record review show. Watch the program below. On the topic of SLAYER's new album, "World Painted Blood", Taylor said, "I was pulled aside on the [ Rockstar Energy Drink] Mayhem [ Festival] tour by a certain gentleman named Kerry King, who proceeded to sit me down and played it track for track — even the bonus stuff. And, dude, I was blown away. I love this album, and I love it for three reasons: It's got the ferocity of the older stuff, it's got the growth of the newer stuff, and it's razor-sharp; the production on it is really good, the performances are smokin', it's probably some of Tom's [ Araya] best lyrics yet, and... I just couldn't stop listening to it, and it was fantastic top to bottom; I was really stoked. When you grow up a SLAYER fan, you expect certain things from a SLAYER album and this album had it all and I was really stoked about it. . . [The production's] almost got that old-school feel to it — nothing is wet, like the '80s. Everything is just reefed in the mix and raw. It's a great album. . . It's not just a collection of songs put under the heading of an album. You can listen to the songs and they're good, but then you listen to the album as a whole, and it's amazing. And I think it's just a lost art in this day and age, and this is like a true, true album, and I'm really stoked that it's SLAYER doing it." Corey admitted in a new interview with Attitude TV that he tried out as lead singer for VELVET REVOLVER. Taylor said, "I had a meeting with those guys, we did some demos together, and it just didn't work — for whatever reason." He added, "It was just really cool. It was one of those things where it's like I could have got to jam with legends, man, in my opinion. But, you know, it was cool, and I still know those guys, I still hang out with them, and I still have nothing but respect." VELVET REVOLVER has been searching for a new lead singer for more than 18 months since dismissing Scott Weiland in April 2008. When Slash was asked about Taylor joining the group a few months ago at his official fan site, he reportedly said that "it looked like it for a minute, but (the band) had decided against it." Taylor, who also sings in STONE SOUR, was reportedly thinking of taking the frontman spot in veteran thrash act ANTHRAX a couple of years ago. SLIPKNOT just wrapped up a North American tour on Las Vegas on Halloween (Saturday, October 31) with a headlining gig at the Trinity Of Terrors horror convention. Taylor next plans to work on the third STONE SOUR record, with sources telling The Pulse of Radio that the band has been meeting with producers in Los Angeles.

I still wonder why Kerry threw a pissy little fit over Killswitch and Adam's antics, but praises everything these 9 clowns do on stage.
Corey, you aren't a bad vocalist. You're just a sellout.

Corey Taylor KNOWS metal. His 1st record he bought was Somewhere In Time from Iron Maiden. He has praised the efforts of Machine Head, Unearth, Every Time I Die, The Red Chord, Anthrax, Deicide, Obituary, and of course SLAYER and tons more. Been listenin to the knot since 99 and been listenin to SLAYER for too too long and i agree World Painted Blood is amazing. Hopefully when Slipknot get back together for a 5th album them and SLAYER do a tour in the US

Stop right there! The album is indeed great, but it clips worse than Metallica's last record! I can turn up my volume knob if I want it louder.

I forgot to mention, if you REALLY want to hear a well-produced album, check out "The Way of All Flesh" by Gojira. Joe Duplantier is a mix master.

decent album, didn't make it all the way through yet, have other things to tend to. however, what i've heard sounds pretty killer, especially lombardo. to me, it sounds like a mix of everything they've been doing their entire career. tom sounds pretty good too. need to finish it all, but the ones i've heard thus far are great. and corey, dude, keep the mask on.

best Slayer album since "Divine Intervention" production is not so great but nowhere near what "Death Magnetic" was... the songs are solid and Jeff wrote some amazing tunes this time around and it is not all Kerry. I thought I would hate it but I like it a lot. I just do not know what people want out of a new Slayer album if you do not like this then what Slayer were you listened to back in the day? The production is super raw and almost "Reign In Blood" like but overcompressed and a bit thin other than that kick ass.

if it actually had some guitars on it. With the exception of Psychopathy Red (which actually sounds like it has some semi-distorted guitars on it, and just plain sounds like it was produced by someone else) it's pretty meh. I had to laugh at Lombardo's wannabe "blast beat" in track 6. Jeez, where are the damn guitars???

Seeing that Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax and some would say Exodus helped to create the musical genre known as Thrash Metal I find it funny how many wannnabe metal heads have the need to make negative comments against these bands.
Trust me none of the so-called current metal bands that the little mall rat kiddies like will be around for 20 years from now.

I just listened to the whole album. I can't STAND the "undisputed attitude" raw garbage production. "Wet" is a good adjective to describe an album's sound, not bad.
Some songs have that classic Slayer riffing like "Snuff" "public display of dismemberment" and "worldwide hate" which is great, but a lot of the album is too punky and basic....and yes I know that is what they grew up on, so fuckin what! you don't hear crap punk influence in their first 5 albums, only Venom, thrash, and NWOBHM. That's why they were so good.
I'm sure it will grow on me. but for now it's ranked just under Divine Intervention

Whats with the shitty production these days? with fucking pro tools and whatnot music should be sounding incredible in the production area. Hell, No Life Till Leather sounds better production wise than a lot of the crap that has been produced lately. Either way, WPB is badass.

Just because a band is legendary doesn't mean every album they release is automatically gold...If people don't like the album, they'll post negative comments. Nothing wrong with that

I am a 36 yr old LONG TIME fan of SLAYER. I like WPB a lot, but I wish the guitar sound was a bit thicker. It is too thin overall. The vocals sound good and natural, the drums sound awesome, and fuck, you hear the BASS for once! But I was surprised by the thin guitars.

Bought it yesterday.
Half-way through the first song, I wasn't super into it. It just didn't really seem that brutal or Slayer-y to me.
But as the song progressed, and then the next song came on, then the third, and so fourth.
By the time it was over, I found myself clicking back to the last four or five songs because I couldn't believe what I just heard from these "elder statesmen" of heavy metal.
If you don't dig this album, you probably need to give it another shot. I am impressed with it. It's so new though . . . time will tell if I keep going back to it.

I loved Slayer til they did God Hates Us All it was an awful album, its as if they don't try hard anymore ,Reign in Blood was the pinnacle of their careers it's a brilliant album and I don't think they'll ever match that for everything it was, i'm gonna hear the new album and I really hope they've finally got back to their best.
Also people lay off Corey hes a great vocalist i'm sure if it was entirely upto him every Slipknot album would of been like Slipknot, and Iowa, hes a huge Carcass fan I read in an interview with him a few years back that his favorite song is Corporal Jigsore Quandary (which is a masterpiece of a song), hes also a fan of bands like Macabre, Death, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse. Slipknots sound is upto Joey and Shaun really as they do most of the music, i'm quite disappointed with there stuff since the Subliminal verses but they still have some good songs on the albums you just have to ignore the lardyda bollocks like vermillion ,and dead memories.
