EDDIE VAN HALEN, TONY IOMMI Interviewed For GUITAR WORLD's 30th-Anniversary Issue - Nov. 3, 2009
Eddie Van Halen (VAN HALEN) appears with Tony Iommi (BLACK SABBATH, HEAVEN & HELL) on the cover of Guitar World's 30th-anniversary (2010) issue, available at newsstands November 17.

Catch up with two of rock's living legends and most admired musical pioneers inside this special collector's issue as they talk shop about the past and present, music, guitars and life.

Iommi told BBC News that he is making a good recovery after receiving stem-cell treatment on an injured hand.

"It's coming on alright actually," the acclaimed guitarist told the BBC at the Classic Rock Awards on Monday.

"I've already had the stem-cell treatment, so I've just got to wait now. It's been six weeks but it's feeling great."

Iommi had been in pain after problems with his right hand joints.

He told the BBC Radio 2 "Radcliffe and Maconie Show" in October that the cartilage had worn out between the joints.

"It was bone to bone and it was getting a bit painful," he said.

Eddie Van Halen told Rolling Stone that he underwent the hand surgery due to a bone spur, a twisted tendon, and a cyst in the joint of his left thumb. He explained that the hand problems first popped up during VAN HALEN's last tour, saying, "During the last leg of our tour, I started developing pain in my thumb and my pinky. I didn't think much of it at the time. It got progressively worse to the point that about three months ago I wasn't able to play at all. My pinky and my thumb were totally locked up and felt like there was something broken."

He sought help from hand specialists in Dusseldorf, Germany, who at first were treating him for arthritis before further examinations showed the extent of the problem: "They said the only way to fix it was surgery, which of course scared the shit out of me, but I was told it was the only way to fix it. Surgery was a success, now I just have to let it heal. I am totally jazzed that they found the problem, fixed it and in about four months my hand will feel like I am 18 again. Thank God."

If those two haven't already collaborated in some form, they should remedy that shit now. The thought of EVH ripping over Tony Iommi's immortal riffs makes my dick bend just a little to the left.

You might be the biggest idiotic piece of shit I've ever seen on this website. Read all the things you said back...You're too dumb to form a sentence let alone make a point someone could take seriously. I'm pretty sure you spelled your own name wrong.

You're a fuckin donkey. Go back to Mrs. McNeillys english class and learn how form a thought. You know nothing about music and you think that if you type in all capital letters people will take you seriously.

If you don't like Eddie Van Halen or Tony Iommi then obviously you know nothing about guitar and you shouldn't bother posting your ignorant opinions. I'd love to hear the brilliant bands you listen to. I bet that's worth a laugh.

Bigey - that includes you and your broken English homophobic insults that have nothing to do with music.

The only other two guitar players that could be considered with these two (in my opinion) are Jimmy Page or Ritchie Blackmore and I have lost a lot of respect for Ritchie with this whole Blackmore's Night medieval crap he is doing now.

Call me RiotAct but I will be getting this magazine also.

I wonder if they talk about Van Halen opening for Black Sabbath on their first tour and blowing them off the stage!

I saw that tour in Chicago--Van Halen were great, but Sabbath were as good as they ever were--Ozzy in particular was wild, and they opened with a bashing version of Symptom of the Universe. Altogether, I did not think Van Halen were better--just different, and a lot of fun to see, since they played their first album and a couple of other songs I can't recall now.

I do seem to recall that Iommi had a sit-down with Eddie about too much copying on that tour, but I think that was in Valerie Bertinelli's book. Didn't notice much copying myself from the show, and believe me, I was glued to it. I think Sabbath were just demoralized by the attention the young band was getting from the record company. After all, Sab's album was not good, whereas the first VH record was a damned good debut.

Nice cover. Personally I would've liked 5 different covers featuring 6 of the greatest guitar players from the last 30 years but this one is ok
