SLAYER's 'World Painted Blood' Projected To Sell 35K-40K First Week

According to Hits Daily Double, the companion web site of music industry tip sheet HITS, SLAYER's new album, "World Painted Blood", is on track to sell between 35,000 and 40,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release. SLAYER's last CD, "Christ Illusion", opened with more than 62,000 units to debut at position No. 5 on The Billboard 200 chart. This was the highest position ever on the chart for SLAYER, who previously reached No. 8 with their 1994 release "Divine Intervention" after moving 93,000 copies of that album in its first week. SLAYER's 2001 album, "God Hates Us All", registered a first-week tally of 51,000 to land at No. 28, while 1998's "Diabolus In Musica" opened with 46,000 units, debuting at No. 31. "God Hates Us All" and its predecessor, "Diabolus In Musica", have each sold more than 300,000 copies so far. Several of the earlier SLAYER albums have been certified gold for sales in excess of 500,000 copies in the United States, including "Divine Intervention".

I'm quite surprised that HITS have put their estimate for the new album's first week sales that low. I wasn't expecting to do as much as the last one but I'd figured they would have predicted 50-55k for its opening week. If it does 40k, that will be less than what Megadeth did back in September (45k). HITS do tend to underestimate metal bands in regards to sales. Lamb Of God's latest album was predicted to sell 50-55k and it ended up doing 68k so HITS can be way off the mark with the actual numbers. Hopefully, that will be the case when the actual numbers are revealed next Wednesday.
What that news post fails to point is that prediction (and all the others in HITS' forecast) were based on first day numbers from ONE branch of Best Buy in Illinois. I hardly think that's going to offer a fair representation of actual sales for any of the albums in their forecast. They will be posting revised predictions on Friday so we'll see if Slayer's predicted numbers change for the better.
On another note, it's good to see that Diabolus In Musica has now surpassed the 300k mark in the US. It was still a few thousand away from it two years ago. I know that God Hates Us All sold more than Diabolus. It would be interesting to know exactly how much more it has sold. Bori, would you consider posting the latest numbers for both Diabolus In Musica and God Hates Us All in the article announcing World Painted Blood's Soundscan numbers that you'll be running next weej. You did this for Christ Illusion's release and it would be nice to see such a comparison again (and could throw in the latest figures for Christ Illusion as well, please?).

have Slayer released an album that doesn't sound the exact same as the last since the early 90's?? Megadeth deserved to sell more. I'm really surprised with the projection. I was expecting more like a maximum of 30K. Slayer fans like the classics....they're not getting any new fans that's for sure.

Name a song from both Metallica and Slayer in which a riff is as close as is the case here.
World Painted Blood (the song - beginning at 0:57) and All Nightmare Long (beginning at 0:37) share an almost identical riff.
Hey, don't get me wrong - I like Slayer's latest record...a lot. And I very much enjoy most of Death Magnetic (the Moderus version II).

This album is fucking awesome!! Slayer album's all have their own personality's listen to Reign In Blood, then listen to Diabolus In Musica, then listen to South of Heaven three completely different Slayer CDs. Beauty Before Order is fucking awesome and Snuff is amazing very smart just read the lyrics. Almost every song reflects whats going on today. "World painted blood no sanctuary".

and some better riffs than some last albums
also some stuff that a little unique to slayer
AT LEAST, they always stay heavy and brutal
I like the quick BLASTBEAT stuff as well
some of lombardo's fills are CRAZY on this as well

Sounds nothing alike musically, at any point. A much better example is how the main riff and vocals of 'Last of My Kind' from new Alice in Chains sounds ALOT like 'Dragula' off Rob Zombie's Hellbilly Deluxe...just saying. Love every band mentioned by the way.

God Hates Us All didn't sell as much as DIM, at least not in America anyway. I don't have the figures on me, but last i checked GHUA barely cracked 200,000. Every Slayer album since Seasons has sold less than the previous release.

I can't believe any true Slayer fan wouldn't like this album. I've read a few posts now that bash Human Strain and Americon. Those songs are incredible and make the album a lot more diverse, totally changing up the pace. They are also catchy while staying heavy as fuck. I thought Christ Illusion was the best since SITA, but I believe this one is better. Thank Satan for Slayer.

The sales numbers don't reflet the popularity of Slayer at all but more the increase in high speed internet connections since all of those albums were released. If record sales indicated their popularity, the fact that Slayer continues to play and sell out bigger venues with each album wouldn't make any sense.
With the exception of Clash of the Titans I've always seen Slayer in various sized clubs then theatres until GHUA when they headlined summer sheds after touring with Priest.

slayer, megadeth and metallica are not even american bands... metallica is 3/4 american and 1/4 dannish, megadeth is currently 3/4 american and 1/4 canadian (I guess nick menza isn't american either and marty friedman is japanese or israeli?) and slayer is 3/4 american and 1/4 mexican or chilean or whatever tom araguaya is... 3 of the big 4 are not really american bands, metal in america is a fraud, that's why it doesn't sell, that's why metallica quit doing it

I'm afraid that you are incorrect. If you search Blabbermouth for their article on Christ Illusion's first week numbers (dated August 16th, 2006), you will find this:
"God Hates Us All" has sold 304,000 copies in the United States so far, according to Nielsen SoundScan — roughly in line with the number achieved by its predecessor, "Diabolus In Musica", which currently stands at about 290,000.

Why is everyone shitty on this song. It's the most "Seasons-ish" sounding tune on the album. Love the evil relax vibe it has. The only song I don't like is Americon, it just a weak song. My favorites so far are Beauty Before Order, Human Strain and World Painted Blood. Should be getting the album in the mail today.

Instead of berating people for allegedly stealing a CD that might put $0.50 into the band's bank account, how about we all agree to spend $30 on a concert ticket and $25 on a t-shirt and really support a band? I'd rather give my money directly to Slayer than to some major label shareholder. Do you honestly think metal bands are making money on CDs these days? Get real.
World Painted Blood is released by SONY, a company that in the past has installed malicious software on the computers of their paying customers, not to mention they are a member of the RIAA, an organization that sues or extorts poor single mothers and college students for rediculous amounts of money. Sony does not derserve a fucking dime of your money...they'd just use it to promote the hell out of the next Brittany Spears single anyways. Does this company really deserve your hard earned money?
Want to buy records? Great. Support independent artists and labels, don't put money into the hands of a greed driven organization like the RIAA. Do your research, find out what you are buying. And when a band releases a record on a label that associates with the RIAA, write them and tell them you disapprove.

MF, you are right, to a point. If nobody buys the album then the record company won't finance a tour (unless, of course you get someone else to finance it). I think soon bands will be able to skip the middleman altogether. It is already starting to happen.

WPB has some good material. I don't think the production is bad at all. I think the issue is the guitar sound. Maybe Slayer is going for the more clean sound. If I was comparing WPB and Christ Illusion to some of the earlier material, I would say please turn on the distortion pedal. Does anybody disagree?

Miracles will never cease. Pre-ordered and the price dropped. Only $15.49 for the deluxe. This album rules!!! I've been laid off since the 1st of August and I had to donate plasma so my wife would let me order this!!! If you're a true fan, PLEASE buy this. Yeah, the band doesn't get much of the money but the label doesn't promote bands that do not sell records! The bands still have to sell enough to cover the recording and promotion. I KNOW this for a fact. I've been involved in the business for over 20 years.

Go check out the rhythm behind the solos on Unit 731, they totally ripped off the rhythm behind the "do you want to die" section towards the end of Raining Blood... with the exception of one note. But, I guess you are allowed to rip yourself off.

As many as i can get to.
And for the record, i buy lots of CD's too, but none from artists on RIAA associated labels. In fact I'll probably buy this one when i find it at a second hand store. In the meantime Slayer has their share of the $75 i paid for the Canadian Carnage tour, and they'll surely get more from me when i get to the show and buy some merch (whenever the postponed shows get rescheduled).
If Slayer released their next album on Metal Blade for instance, who are not an RIAA label then I would be out buying it first day.

sure they are getting old, everyone gets old. But at least they will leave an amazing catalog and legacy from an extremely long career as a band. I can pull out any Slayer album and listen to it front to back without hitting the FF button. I can't name any other band that I can do that to. They have stayed true to themselves and, in my opinion, have never put out a crap album (sure, some are better than others). That is more than I can say for Metallica, Megadeth and pretty much any band out there.
