JETBOY Bassist Fired During 'Good Clean Fun' Podcast; Audio Available
- Nov. 5, 2009
|
|
JETBOY guitarist Fernie Rod apparently fired the band's bassist, Michael Butler (ex- EXODUS), this past Tuesday (November 3) during one of the podcasts Butler hosts — "Good Clean Fun". This came a day after JETBOY's drummer Doug Hovan reportedly quit the band following an argument over an apparent hierarchy between the founding members and the newer members in which band information and decisions were not shared with newer members. You can listen to the entire "Good Clean Fun" podcast using the audio player below. JETBOY recently completed recording an EP of its first original material in 20 years, and is currently negotiating for its release later this year. In addition, a rock documentary film on the band is in the preliminary stages of being shot by Reality Check TV, which also produced the "mini-doc" included in JETBOY's last CD/DVD release, "The Glam Years", on Cleopatra/ Deadline Records. "The Glam Years" contained a DVD of a 1986 concert at Los Angeles' legendary Whisky a Go-Go (featuring a chock-full of extra interviews and photos) as well as a 21-track CD of the group's greatest hits. Like Fernie says, he should just stick to his little cover band if he just wants to drink and have fun with his buddies. Fernie sounds like an absolute pro - especially when he keeps his composure and is able to clearly and articulately back his story and viewpoint. Meanwhile Butler keeps interrupting and raising his voice with childish name-calling with no substance behind his argument. Its like listening to a child that doesn't know the business try to argue with a fair and reasonable professional adult. Hilarious.

the brutal truth
FERNIE seems to want to have a smooth operation , seems professional as well. This bass guy wants to hide behind the rock n roll moniker i ,e easy going party ... he does not realize all great acts are very disciplined, or at least have some stringent ground rules . the way this bass player spoke with ferine is unacceptable he sounded like more like a teenage rebel than a pro musician. He kept cursing at this Fernie dude meanwhile fernie kept clam and did not curse back so tell me who is more immature or who is lacking class here????

Too bad. The Alice Copper show was great! It was good to see Jetboy playing on a big stage and they absolutely CRUSHED that night. I don't know Fernando Rodriguez except for a few conversations in passing over the years when I would see him at a club, seemed like a decent enough guy but I can completely understand how Mike Butler would feel in this situation. Butler was brought into Jetboy through his association with Billy during the American Heartbreak days (wasn't Lannon in Jetboy for a cup of coffee too?). In Heartbreak Butler was a full member and was responsible for much of that bands creative output and success. It sounds like he was treated as hired gun by Fernando and that Fernando probably got Billy and Mickey to treat him the same. It's a shame because I thought that I was seeing the re-birth of one of the most overlooked bands of the whole "glam" era of the 80's, they were that good that night. I hope Billy and Mike can keep on good terms because you just never know what will happen in the future. As far as Fernando saying that Mike was gloomy and inplying that Mike had issues with alcohol, that's B.S. Mike is a quiet guy and from my dealings with him a complete professional. He's a hell of a bassist and i'm sure he'll do fine, as a matter of fact I'm looking forward to seeing what he does next. Jetboy has had a few bass players and Mike should feel good that he didn't leave the band like Todd Crew did.

"I rocked out man" - hahaha!!!!
"The destructive force" of drugs and alcohol - the best albums Aerosmith recorded were on drugs. I guess times have changed - you gotta be sober to rock out :)
Strange thing is that all these guys look like junkies but they actually are sober?
Firing both these guys. They needed to be let go.
Neither one of these losers would take constructive criticism.
The bassist had no arguments and won't let Fernie finish his arguments and respond in normal fashion.
Fernie sounds like a serious businessman, unlike the new guys.

Michael Butler is bitter because he's a failed musician,
He's never been in a successful band, never got his music off the ground,
and now he makes his money doing a podcast which he can't get celebrity guests to do because he annoys and acts like a fanboy when doing them, and has digs at em before and after he does them...
Guys in his 40s but he sounds and acts like his 14.

I listened to the podcast wanting to root for the bass player (maybe just because of the Exodus connection), but after a few minutes of his immature, childish bullshit, I found it damn near impossible to.
Grow the fuck up, Michael. Get your shit together. The ideal amount of dropout for your bass signal is ZERO seconds, not three. If you REALLY need to get liquored up at every band practice, perhaps you've got more pressing issues. Either way, the guitarist was totally justified in firing an immature, unprofessional bassist. Anyone in their right mind who gave a shit about their band would have done the same.

Fuck you, Fernie Rod. Nice move, loser. You had SHIT until 2 years ago. You are another washed out Andy McCoy poser, with zero talent at this point and you fucked up Michael from an awesome band because you are an L.A. wannabe still? Jetboy was resurrected by Billy Rowe from the much missed BEST rock band from San Francisco, CA, American Heartbreak! I am sure you were slinging burgers in L.A. when Billy called you to get the band back together. Michael Butler took his AWESOME bass guitar duties for Jetboy, as he was the same COOL bass player for American Heartbreak and a close friend of Billy. You are SHIT.

After reading the posts on here I can only say that none of you know the entire story. You saw a portion of it. A one hour phone call.
First off Michael does not ger "liquored up" at practice. He enjoys a few beers.
Next he was in a successful band and has toured with them as well.
True Michael went off during this interview but it was a long time coming. Fernie is an excellent spin doctor. That's why they had him make the call rather than Billy.
As so many people do when they get sober or find religion. Fernie tried to push his new found beliefs on the band. Kudos for getting clean and sober Fernie...I truly mean that. But you had three other members who are ok and can handle a beer or two during practice.
If they aren't ready to stop drinking then Fern can't make them. And pushing it in the fashion in which he did was uncalled for.
If your not ready to stop doing something having some one preach to you about it won't work.
They continually kept Doug and Butler out of the loop regarding band business. Yes, they are not founding members, but don't you think if you are working FOR FREE and putting your time and energy into something that you should be extended the common courtesy of knowing what's up?!
All the cryptic emails sent back and forth was wrong. If Fern is such a "professional" then why did they conduct band business in emails. Why not face to face in person. Seems a bit cowardly to me.
All the back stabbing in that band seems to have been going on for a while. So yea he went off. Who among us hasn't found themselves in a situation where they might say to themselves "I could have handled that better".
I for one am proud that he finally stood up for himself. He simply wanted to play in a band where he could have fun. Michael is not all about the "party" as someone indicated above. But if you have to practice 2 times a week you wanna at least be having a good time and enjoy being around the people you play with.
Not constantly waiting for the other show to drop!!!
From listening to past podcast Fern has belittled and even poked Butler in the chest telling him he was "nothing". Imagine being trated like that at practice and having to be around that all the time and bite your tounge.
I don't see a big comeback for these guys anyhow. It's unfortunate it had to go down the way it did. And it's unfortunate they were overlooked back then. There is some talent there.
I'm thinking all those involved are probably wishing it had not gone down the way it did. Afterall if you've ever seen a Jetboy show with Butler on bass you know he is one hard working, entertaining son of a bitch. So yea I agree with his statement "I rocked"
Yes Butler you certianly did and still do!
This all happened for a reason. It simply came to a head and became an explosive situation over time and unfolded in the same manner.
Now maybe Butler can go to London and play with Ginger and move on from this long on going frustrating situation.

That one dude who calls Fernie a "blowhard" does it after Fernie gets off the phone with him even after Fernie tries to squash the beef, what a gutless fucking coward....this moron is truly sad. The saddest is that these guys have to resort to elementary school tactics & theyre in their 40's!!!...haha...good luck with your douchie podcasts you fucks.

so many bands working so much harder than them barely holding it together but remaining productive. this argument reveals why their personalities haven't allowed them to excel. far too trivial to be having members depart if the objective is success. shame none of them have learned that at their age.
nice waste of time, work and friendships way to go boys!
