GENE SIMMONS Offers Fans Chance To Own His Signature Axe Bass Guitar - Nov. 5, 2009
Gene Simmons, co-founder of the legendary KISS, has announced fans will be able to get their own licks in with the purchase of a limited and personally signed edition of the Gene Simmons Axe Bass.
Rock Star gallery in Scottsdale Arizona, which specializes in music collectibles and celebrity fine art, will host a meet-and-greet on November 30 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for fans who purchase Gene's Axe Bass. It will be private and refreshment will be served.

Created by a true music visionary, Simmons has invented the ultimate memorabilia in a one-of-a-kind collector's edition instrument that is personally hand numbered and signed by Gene Simmons himself. And every purchase of the Gene Simmons Axe Bass will also include a meet-and-greet with Simmons, at Rock Star gallery 15220 N. Scottsdale Road suite 160 Scottsdale, Az. 85254 in Kierland Commons.

"The Gene Simmons Axe Bass is, by some accounts a piece of art — numbered and signed by myself... but in other ways, is simply my instrument of choice in KISS. The bass that slays them all..." says Simmons.

Fans can reserve and submit an order of the Axe Bass by calling Rock Star gallery, 480-275-4501 or email info@rockstargallery.net. The fans will then be able to attend the private meet-and-greet the evening before the concert on November 30. This meet-and-greet with Simmons will include him personally handing the Axe Bass to the buyer and autographing it for them. There will also be photo opportunities.

The KISS concert in Phoenix on December 1 is part of the 2009 KISS tour, a legendary trek across to America to deliver songs off the critically acclaimed, much-awaited new "Sonic Boom" CD, the first new KISS studio album release in over a decade.

The official Gene Simmons Axe tour bus will shadow the KISS tour covering more than 45 dates across the U.S. and Canada. Gene will arrive at Rock Star gallery in the Axe Tour Bus for the meet-and-greet and it may be featured in the upcoming season of Simmons' hit A&E reality show, "Gene Simmons Family Jewels".

"You could also play this bass on any stage in the world because it's better than anything out there," he says.

The rocker has only this Axe to grind when it comes to this special bass guitar with its unique design and unique, loud sound. The limited edition and numbered silver metallic with a black burst was personally created by Simmons who approved the electronics, the body type, design and even handpicked the wood. The fingerboard is made from Indian Rosewood and each Axe Bass comes with a case that is also designed and hand painted by Simmons.

Simmons owns the trademark to the word "Axe" and has for over 25 years. He also owns the trademark to the distinctive Axe shape of the bass.

"I've used the Axe on stage and literally thousands of people have contacted me to ask, 'Where can I get one? Gene, I need one right now. Can I buy your bass?'

"So, I've made a limited number of the basses, and since this has been announced, the results have been on the tsunami level," Simmons says.

Fans are encouraged to call as soon as possible as there are only a limited number and over 60% are already sold.

Rock Star gallery, located in Scottsdale Arizona, is the perfect venue for this event. Michael Dunn, owner of the gallery, is honored to host Gene Simmons and his fans. "Growing up KISS was THE BAND. The uniqueness of this group is unparallel to any other. Gene Simmons cares about his fans and we will make this a night to remember," Dunn says.

The Rock Star gallery features custom-framed, hand-signed collectibles from KISS, LED ZEPPELIN, THE EAGLES and many more. Celebrity artwork is also featured from Ronnie Wood, Grace Slick, Stephen Holland, Sebastian Kruger and more.

"We help people experience probably the best time in their life with their favorite music and art. Purchasing the Simmons Axe Bass is a rare opportunity for the ultimate guitar and KISS fan," Dunn says.

As KISS fans have known for years, Simmons doesn't just do things in a quiet way. Forget the concept of plunking down a credit card and receiving your Axe Bass from the UPS man. Fans will have a unique experience with the rock icon at the meet-and-greet.

Gene will be doing local radio interviews prior to the meet-and-greet.

Simmons says that the Axe Bass is a gift to his loyal fans.

"I owe the fans everything because they made my life possible," Simmons says. "When I was growing up, I was never able to get a piece of THE BEATLES. They weren't available, but they were still Mt. Olympus to me.

"This Axe Bass is just as special for me and the fans," Simmons says.

"You may not be able to be Gene Simmons," he says. "But you can feel like me, with my Gene Simmons Axe Bass slung over your shoulder."

The reality is what you’re paying for is product endorsed by a celebrity. Everybody has their heroes. I personally have no interest in paying for something endorsed by Gene Simmons alone. In my opinion he is no where near as talented as Paul or even Ace. HOWEVER, his demon gimmic is by far the most popular. I always found him rather comical. When he sings it’s like he’s pretending to be a demon and to me that’s not singing. What’s worse is that when he opens his mouth he says some of the dumbest things, he comments on politics, woman, pop culture and is always dropping Cher’s name.

that punisher you saw in the store may have been a cheap chinese copy..they sell ace frehley signiture guitars here in australia, but they are epiphone. only 1299, and the real one is about 3 thousand...
fender bass's are bloody shit, over priced toys made in china. i played one of genes axe bass's at a NAMM show once...had a cool growl too it, wouldnt be siuted for blues or jazz, but fitted well when u added a lil gain to it like gene does live...
he is very underestamated as a bass player, sure he isnt any billy shehan or fancy like that...but at the same time he isnt a root note player either..he is a huge paul macarntey fan and it shows in his style. very melodic..
try playing a kiss song using just root notes, then play the same thing doing what gene does, and you will see he knows a little more than people think..his mouth shoots off over buisness and stuff like that, but he always keeps a low profile with his playing.. he rarely has too look down at his fret board, even while playing songs like going blind or sure know something..
of all the videos i seen of gene stuffing up lyrics and forgetting words to songs, i never herd or seen footage of gene fucking up a bass line...
plenty of ace and peter moments !!!! those 2 are the kings of fucking up !!!!
he isnt the best bass player in the world, but neither were macartney or sting...doesnt mean he dont write good licks !!

wasnt the black one that was most popular, it was the regular wood finish one. had the gene simmons case, had his autograph on it as well. this was during when the reunion started. I do remember and i still have a tour book when they advertised the punisher, the black one was being sold straight from kiss LTD. for only 1,500. Yes i do know about the ace models, i bought a epi version for 700 dollars long ago. had the pick ups re wired to the skematics that are for the gibson version and added some teaks to it for my own personal liking. I still would like a punisher bass over the axe deal they got going on.

i also enjoyed the line "created by a true music visionary". i thought we were talking about gene $immon$ here!?! maybe a true marketing visionary, but what is $immon$ contribution to music? "god of thunder"? sounds like it was written by a fifth grader!

when you say "anybody", what you mean is yourself. maybe these bass players are famous TO YOU, but i assure you that the rest of the world might argue. gene is not famous for playing bass, but rather for his character. his bass playing is actually very rudimentary.

first of all, who is "john estlewood"?!? do you mean john entwistle of the who? i'll agree with you on that, plus mccartney.

what about bill wyman (stones)? roger waters (pink floyd)? john paul jones (zeppelin)? pete quaife (kinks)? phil lynott (thin lizzy)? john deacon (queen)? even some of today's bass players like flea (red hot chili peppers) and duff mckagan (gnr/velvet revolver) are better know and more accomplished bass players that gene is.

gene played what he played well. but nothing kiss ever recorded was considered cutting edge. but the bass players for the beatles, stones, zeppelin, queen, etc. all made their mark musically. gene made his mark as a marketing genius, not as a bass player.

and to re-state my original point, NONE of these bass players would be caught dead playing the axe bass.

COMMENT | McCartney????

How can anyone compare Gene Simmons to Paul McCartney??

McCartney is not only a talented bass player, but he also plays guitar, drums, piano and a number of other instuments. What's more, McCartney is also an innovative player, meaning that he created new bass styles and sounds throughout his career. McCartney is also one half of the greatest songwriting due in the history of popular music.

Gene Simmons plays bass, probably a bit of guitar. KISS songs are very basic in that there are no complicated bass lines or fills. And the KISS bass sound is certainly nothing original! I give Gene full credit for being an innovative showman and master-merchandiser. But where Paul McCartney is a PHD in bass (and music in general), Gene is a third-grader!

Strangely, Gene would readily admit that he couldn't lick McCartney's boot heals! Even he has respect for a true master and innovator.

Great list of bass gods! I'd have to say my top five all-time would be:

1) Paul McCartney
2) John Entwistle
3) Roger Waters
4) Ron Blair (original bassist for Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers) - really, he's super-talented!
5) John Paul Jones

Honourable mention to Jack Bruce (Cream), Mike Mills (REM) and Adam Clayton (U2).

Gene Simmons? Well, not for PLAYING the bass, but #1 on my list of "Guys dressed up in costumes spewing blood on their bass".

all you have mentioned is what a " critic ' would say
if you listen very carefully to genes bass lines you will here, paul macartney style bass fills..gene was a huge beatles fan and thats were he got his inspiration from...to the ears of a critic some you have mentioned above would be listed..but to the ears of a musician, mainly rock musicians or fans, gene would be up there with legendary bass players...i never said best...i said legendary !!

"what a 'critic' would say" - ???? pretty much anyone who knows anything about popular music would pick many of the same bass players in terms of prowess on their instument.

you actually started this entire line of posts by saying that gene was amoung the "5 most famouse (sic) bass players ever". sure, gene is famous and he's a bass player, but gene is not famous FOR PLAYING the bass.

as a bass player, gene's playing isn't in the same league as any of the ones mentioned above. maybe as an entertainer, or as a marketing guru, but he's not even in the top ten of best rock and roll bass players. but i will agree with you that gene's playing was heavily influenced by mccartney and the beatles. but really, who wasn't?!?
